Okay so.... Imma be honest because cakes are expensive. If your idea of good cake is hostess... you…read moremay like the cakes here. But if you like good cake (like the ones from Central Market or Whole Foods) do yourself a favor and skip this one. The owner, who made sure to mention how in demand she is and filing up fast, sold her tasting delivery as "20 flavors." Now this concerned me. But my previous baker had a family emergency and I needed a cake vendor asap, I was willing to give it a shot. She delivered mini cupcakes topped with frosting that you get on cheap pure sugar kids cupcakes. My heart sank. Cupcakes are not cake. They don't bake the same. And these were clearly frozen and defrosted. And she told me that they would last a few days and still be good. She handed me a sheet of paper with the flavors listed and I brought them in. Well, I have never actually done this before but I did a real life spit take. I took a bite of the first one and spit it out so fast my fiance was shocked. Just to be fair, I nibbled on a chocolate one too. It was dry and gross as well. I gave up. But my fiance has a much high tolerance for bad sweets, and nibbled on several others. Most of the ones that had flavors like champagne and what not tasted the same as the other ones with other 'flavor' labels. The pricing was high for that quality. The place I ended up booking (C. Marie's Sweets) is the same price and is very good with real ingredients and meringue buttercream. Keep looking. The only reason I tried this place is because I accidentally hit "send my request to other vendors" or whatever that function is on Yelp and the vendor was super responsive.

The food was REALLY tasty and my departed uncle would have loved it: sliders (brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken), green chili mac & cheese, loaded potato salad, jalapeño poppers, peach cobbler, banana pudding, and soft drinks. I had to find catering in a hurry, and it was extremely easy to work out a plan with Jonathan. One of his practices is to get the caterers to the venue WELL in advance (2 hours), and this was confirmed to be a good idea because somehow the catering team was given the wrong address and had to scurry to get to us and set up in time. The serving team was great, though, and everything turned out OK. These things happen, in my view. The only criticism I have is that the food was served in small pasteboard baskets rather than on plates. This had the unfortunate effect of making it look as though we were trying to keep the guests from eating much, and it seemed better suited to more casual outdoor events, perhaps ones where people are standing and milling. If offered a choice in advance, I would definitely have picked plates. One more thing to consider: we had a ton of leftovers and no easy way to take them home (except a few bits in those baskets). I hated to waste the food but just couldn't manage a plan at the last minute. Not the caterers' responsibility, of course, but you will want the leftovers!
