I've been going to get tomato pie since I was a child with my Mom. For their own good their famous tomato pie has been going downhill. I expressed it to the manager and he says it's that time of the year that the tomato pie rises too fast and that's why he takes this time for vacation. However his family before him ran the place and it never rose like that and they ran it that time of the year for many more days. I explained that the crust was way too thick and was dried up. With his excuse of it being too humid is just that an excuse. My third time in three weeks now has been this way . No I'm sorry or please try us again . Zero people skills. My wife and I were in town and decided to stop by here (and the place "down the street") to do a little Tomato Pie taste-off. I waited in the car with our son while my wife ran into grab some slices. She picked out a "spicy/hot" corner piece for me (yay) and took an inside slice for herself. The slices here are smaller than the other place but are still inexpensive. We took our pizza to the Zoo and ate it there. They were wrapped up in plastic to keep things clean but once unwrapped (which was tough because it stuck to the tomato sauce) it still was a bit messy. But it was good. Their sauce wasn't very sweet and I would say it reminded me of regular tomato sauce. I liked it a lot, and the hit of hot pepper only enhanced the one-note flavor of the sauce. The crust was a bit drier than the other place, but that could just be the slice we got had been sitting around longer. I wish I could have toasted it in my oven at home and sprinkled some more parm on top, but eating it cold at the zoo out of the plastic was still pretty good. As a comparison to the pizza sold next door, I thought this was better than their tomato pie, but when I tried my wife's regular (not "spicy/hot" slice) it wasn't as good as the place next door. I guess I like a little heat. Still, both places make great Tomato Pie. As indicated in my earlier review, there are lots of other great things to purchase here. I am sure I will be back! read more

The tomato pie was good but very messy, luckily the girl at cash offered us napkins when packing my slices. They offered regular and spicy so I opted for a saucy middle and a spicy corner for Ben. The corner piece they picked was small and I probably should've asked for a bigger one. They pizza itself was thicker than Roma's and the sauce was not sweet either. Our last trip to Utica brought us to Napoli's Bakery hoping to get yet another Tomato Pie slice (or two). Our timing hasn't been great since I seem to get there and the last slice has just gone out the door. No problem. I'm game for a sub. Tried to order a small sub to be told there is just one size. ok. no problem. Ordered the large Italian sub. The sub is now my most favorite sub. The sub was on the freshest roll with freshly cut deli meats. The way the counter is you can't watch the staff make your sub so it's a surprise when you open it. I opted for the usual toppings of lettuce, tomato and onion. Asked for the oil and vinegar and the nice lady taking my order suggested mayo as well.....sure, let's give it a try. My first bite was hard to eat since it is so big was hard to shove into my mouth. Only ate the first half for lunch. My five stars comes from eating the second half. Usually after a few hours the bun gets so soggy that it's just not pleasant. No problem here. Thinking that the mayo/oil combo would make the bun mushy I was anticipating the worst. Again, there was no problem. The bun survived, the meats were still delicious just as wonderful a bite as the first half. Only problem I have is that it's out in Utica. Also purchased two containers of the Chicken Riggie's and two containers of the Utica Greens from the freezer. We have gotten to eat both since coming home. I am a big fan of the Chicken Riggie's. While I was told that the peppers are to be spicy, it appears to have used pepperoncini peppers. Left a bit of a tang to the sauce that becomes very addictive. I've tried other Utica Greens and there are usually more greens. That was disappointing. Go for the subs and the chicken riggie's. read more

Can you believe that I lived in upstate NY for about 3/4 of my life and I had never experienced "tomato pie?" I know. Me neither. They keep it super simple: dough (nice subtle crunch), tomato sauce (on the sweeter side) & a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. I ate it cold. and then later had a slice warmed up. Both were great. Crust is my favorite in Utica....( Danielle's is great too. ) A super nice selection of deli meats, cheeses and pasta. The hard crust bread has not changed in many years. A regular stop every Sunday. Published hours are wrong. This place is only open four days a week and closes at 3 PM. I would have loved to try this place. Be sure to call ahead and see if they're open. I suggest trying another bakery that is actually open. Luckily and Utica there are plenty. read more

The tomato pie is the best in the city by far. the spinach-ricotta roll is to die for although I hear the ham and cheese is fantastic (I don't eat meat so I can't say) Quality italian cheese at fair prices. On my quest to find the most prestigious tomato pie that I had once encountered while attending college in 2005 I ventured to Bleeker St. Utica, NY. While on the way to Roma Sausage I saw a catchy sign at an establishment by the name of Napoli's Italian Bakery; "voted best tomato pie". So after I purchased two boxes from Roma (25 boxes ready to purchase, line out the door) I had to judge for myself. So there I am in Napoli's, clean establishment nice service and the I ask for a "voted best tomato pie" tomato pie! The girl say's wait "let me see if we have any". OK, out she comes with a box. $7 paid and gone. Here is where I start to ? the validity of the "voted best tomato pie". The pie had a hard outer and bottom layer and a soggy inner layer. The crust and bottom later nearly chipped my teeth and the sauce was Busch league at best. Needless to say Roma Sausage wins my #1 vote for the best tomato pie ever! read more
