I attribute the success of this adventure to my two guides, Charlie and Johnny, and to the proprietor of Off-the-Hook Fly Fishing, Mike. Upon arrival at Putah Creek my memories from more than 55 years ago when I bait cast for natural trout on creeks in the Feather River Canyon were revived. From the smell of dry grasses on the California hills, the sound of babbling water in Putah Creek, and learning again how to fish for trout, I was transported back in time. And most importantly, the knowledge and patience that my guides Charlie and Johnny provided paralleled that from my childhood neighbor who taught me how to catch trout in those creeks. The two days I fly fished on Putah Creek with Charlie and Johnny exceeded my expectations. I was fortunate that Mike had arranged different guides for each of the two days, since Charlie and Johnny had their own style of teaching and guiding, and took me to different locations on the creek. The different fishing spots provided various water and terrain conditions that allowed me the opportunity to learn and use casting and mending techniques. Overall, their superior guidance and expertise gave me the chance to learn, apply, and practice the art and science of fly fishing. At the end of the day I was happy to have learned from the best. I am now confident that I understand the basics, and I am prepared to go off on my own to practice fly fishing techniques and catch some fish. He wanted to take his 3 year old son fishing but without buying/lugging gear around and in a more smaller therefore safer environment. I'm sure we'll take the kid fishing in a more natural lake/river when he gets a bit older but for now this place fit the bill. Between Bodega Bay and Valley Ford, in the hills there's a small ranch with a man-made pond. They turned that pond into a trout fishing hole where they will stock it and maintain the water so trout could live in it. There's a $10 fee to enter whether you fish or not, kids I'm sure get a deal. Then you can rent poles, buy bait then go down to the pond and start fishing. No catch and release, if you happen to catch a trout you'll have to bring it up to the main building where they will clean it and put it on ice for you. Think I saw it was $20 per fish for such a service. In a 4 hour outing we didn't catch anything, fishing in any shape or form is never guaranteed. We did see a few people catch a fish, but I'd say maybe 1 in every 30 people caught something...on that particular day. A lot has to do with weather/conditions and if they stocked the pond recently with newer fish. And since we didn't catch anything, they gave us a voucher for no admission fee on the next round, but you have come within a months time. If we do come back, I'l bring my own pole that time around. But to offer this service, which I didn't even know existed just seemed like a good fit for our current needs. The kid had a blast and I appreciated the quality time spent with fam. To that Hageman's Ranch deserves a shout out.

There's something about this place that makes family bonding feel so natural and meaningful. From the calm surroundings to the shared excitement of fishing, it creates moments that really stay with you. The deluge of responses made it clear: if you're paying to park in Marin County, you're doing something wrong. With only a single exception in memory, I don't think I've paid to hike anywhere in the county and these days all I do is hike. But, if you want to hike the grounds of the Mount Tam Watershed it is true that there's a $8 cost to that. You can get around this by purchasing an annual parking pass or checking a pass out from the Marin County Library system. Bon Tempe Lake is my favorite hike within this area of the Mt. Tam Watershed. With an easy to follow, well-trod, 4.8 mile path around the lake's perimeter, and situated only minutes from downtown Fairfax, Bon Tempe is a quintessential Marin experience. You're in nature, beside a gorgeous, placidly serene lake yet only 10 minutes from a good brunch or latte. There's nothing difficult about the hike around the lake and though it isn't flat, it's elevations are quite gentle. If you need more, add a loop around Lake Lagunitas (the two paths intersect) to increase your hike by another 1.2 miles. Fishing is allowed here (but no swimming) and the parking area - for Bon Tempe in particular - fills up early on weekends. All the more reason to make time for Bon Tempe on a weekday. There's lots of hiking options here in the Watershed but for my money, the half-shaded-half-sunny path around Bon Tempe is the loveliest of them all.

Many hiking trails, rental boats and calm clean water with many birds all over the place. You pay to park and for fishing but that helps for maintenance and for the planting of fish which they do a few times a year. They have a small store which sell bait and the day i came to check it out they had a picture of a 6 year old girl that had caught a 5 pound trout. Past the time we should have gone back, Bob took us into a shallow back bay as the sun dipped down and told me to cast into a side channel. Bam! I caught a healthy sized striper. He had hooked one for my girlfriend earlier. With Bob, it's not just the fishing. He gives tours and he weaves that into the guided trip. His great sense of humor and genuine desire to put his clients on fish really sets him apart from a lot of guides I've had. He took a lot of time to teach my girlfriend how to cast and she truly surprised me on how far she was casting- farther than me at times!
