Not bad but had better. Service is decent and food is ok. Lacks something I cannot put my finger on.

The Wolfhouse - The outside of the wolf house with the beach in the far distance

The Wolfhouse café is part of small 'Wolfhouse' complex of converted outbuildings and wooden cabins also comprising a gift shop, a gallery, and a quirky garden with children's play area. The gallery was shut on our January visit, but everything that was open was in the best possible taste and oozing a relaxed charm. Although only going on one visit, the culinary firepower here seems to be beyond outstanding! Ignore the fact that their website lacks contact details or even an address - this is probably just them being arty! Instead, click through under 'Goods' to 'Savouries' http://wolfhousekitchen.co.uk/goods/savouries/ and 'Pâtisserie' http://wolfhousekitchen.co.uk/goods/patisserie-menu/patisserie-menu-2/ and feast your eyes. Both myself and my friend had different and interesting Pukka herbal tea blends, and a chalkboard advertised that their coffee beans were roasted by a local Lancaster business, with Valrhona hot chocolate, so I think they have the drinks covered. I had goat's cheese, pistachio and prune cake which I think may be this recipe http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/cheese_pistachio_and_85849 from The Little Paris Kitchen series on BBC2. My friend had a salted caramel slice, which I also tried and it was good. But my cake worked for me on a whole lot of levels - the colours, sweet-savoury flavours, the textures - see photo. The cake display was very impressive, with other options spread along the sweet-savoury spectrum. I note that the pâtisserie list on The Wolfhouse website just goes on and on and on, with 20-30 items on the list advertised as being available each day. This quote from their 'Savouries' webpage sums up the cheerfully inventive spirit, "When we run out of one thing, we find something else to cook. Simple! It's just so much more fun that way!" With so much inventive spirit, plus everything so well-sourced and made from scratch, I think we can safely say that this 30-seater café is a better option for the serious foodie than a lot of fine dining places. Plus, it is totally relaxed with great staff, and priced at not much above your average country tearoom. Highly recommended.

Staff are generally welcoming of almost anyone, whether a small family, large family, group of hikers, dog walkers, children. Everyone. What a wonderful little restaurant this is, you absolutely must go if you're in Liverpool and want a nice meal. The interior is sort of a combination of funky and romantic, with dim purple lighting, cushions on which to recline, and a very small dining room. The menu is a hodgepodge of European influences, and it's the sort of menu that sounds like it could be quite average, but every bite absolutely transcends its menu description. Since it was my birthday, they wrote "Happy birthday!" on my placemat before we arrived which was quite cute. I'm very sad to not remember exactly what we got for each course, they had so many specials that aren't on their website! I think to start we had wood pigeon and the scallops, both of which were absolutely outstanding. I preferred the scallops (a special, I think) and my fiancé preferred the wood pigeon which was on the main menu. Each item was cooked perfectly and all the flavors of the dish mingled together beautifully - somebody in the kitchen knows what they are doing. My fiancé had beef and I had lamb for the main courses; both were tender and luscious. Though I've forgotten what we had for dessert, I know it continued to be wonderful as was everything that preceded it. The servers were friendly and informative, and the whole vibe of the restaurant was similar. We struck up a chat with the folks at two tables next to us, our whole side of the restaurant was talking to each other! It was lovely, a warm and intimate place where you feel like you can either enjoy a romantic evening for two or strike up a conversation with a stranger. Puschka is pricey, but for such wonderful, inspired food, I think it's absolutely worth it. A great place for a special occasion, or any time at all!

The decor inside is classy and modern also and you feel as though you are in quality surroundings and as such the food will be of a high standard. The most impressive thing about the restaurant is that they try to use local ingredients which is great to see and the menu is vast ranging from a rump of Lamb to Southport shrimps which incidentally I would recommend despite not being a fan of seafood . There are also great wines and a range of beers to be found also although nothing in Puschka comes cheap. This place is well worth the price and really is a niche within Liverpool's culinary ensemble so I would definitely advise the people of merseyside to try out Puschka.

It was just a matter of time before something on the events night emails from Inox would catch our…read moreeye. The event that caught our eye was 'Game Night'. I actually thought, "Oooo board games and food?!" You can tell I work with students because that was my first reaction. However, it was actually a celebration of game meats, pheasant and venison. I have been to the venue before, as we used it for a training day, but it is very easy to forget that it is at the top of the Students' Union. University car parks are available for free (if there are no barriers) after 6 p.m., so customers coming in for an evening event should be able to find parking close to the S.U. They are not open for dinner each night, just for events at night, but do have a lunch menu and also offer Afternoon Tea. We were a bit early, but were greeted, checked in, and then shown to the bar where we were able to order drinks. What is interesting is the fact that Mr. Snarky's reaction was similar to mine and other reactions I've heard... "It is very corporate." While it is modern, it doesn't quite have that intimate feeling that restaurants of this style typically have. We found a place to perch while having our drinks and waiting to be seated. I have to say that the service is really very good, very friendly... even when we were there for our training day causing problems :). We were seated near the window, although sadly we could not see much because of the bushes and trees in front of the S.U. They also offered a wine flight that provided a wine chosen for each course, so I decided to take part in it. The brought us two rolls and two mini Yorkshire Puds with a bit of gravy in the bottom. It was lovely. My first wine was brought out, it was a white wine that was really refreshing and a bit citrusy. The first course was pheasant done in an Asian style with Pak Choi (Bok Choi for my American friends) and a dumpling made with the leg meat. The pheasant was very nice, but the sauce was too overpowering. Not entirely sure what the sauce was made of, but it seemed like a thick soy sauce that was more bitter than salty. The dumpling, the part I was most excited for, was a good idea in theory, but in practice the outside bit of the dumpling was quite thick and the little bit of leg meat that was inside was a bit dry. However, I will say that the dish and the wine really went well together. For the second course, they brought out a red wine that was lovely because it had this hint of spice, great for a red meat, but there was a bit of sauce on the plate that was so sweet that it kind of ruined the wine. To be honest, I'm not sure what the sauce was because the only sauce it mentioned on the menu was a jus, which was there and lovely, but this was like a fruity puree that was far too sweet. The venison was served medium rare and it was beautiful...very tender. I was a bit skeptical of the Venison Faggot as I've never had Faggot before, but it was really nice, particularly with the jus. It was served with some kale and a fondant potato. By far my favourite course of the night, although again, that fruity puree was unnecessary. And dessert... was a Pear and Apple Crumble with Salted Caramel Ice Cream and Pickled Blackberries. The crumble was missing the actual crumble part... there was a bit of the hazelnut crumble sprinkled around, but there wasn't enough to call it a 'crumble' in my opinion. The apples in the crumble overpowered the pears, but the star of the show was the Salted Caramel Ice Cream. I told Mr. Snarky that if they sold pints of the ice cream, I would buy a few, which he agreed with me on, which is unusual because this is not a flavor of ice cream that he would choose. The one bit that was a bit off was the pickled blackberry... the blackberry was already a bit sour itself, but then to add the pickling on top, it was like eating a Warhead (you know those super sour candies). Overall, we did enjoy our night and while there were highlights, there are also some things that could do with some improvements. Around the time dessert was coming out, the club in the bottom of the S.U. started playing music and it kind of killed the mood and made us think it was time to head home, even though it was only 9 p.m. For the 3-course event it was £32.50 pp, and the wine flight was £19.00, so a bit of an expensive night out, but not bad. A bit of a strange place to have a restaurant like this, but would be happy to come back for another special event.
