Calling this restaurant "African food" is like going to a restaurant advertising, "Latin American…read morefood." Super general. Africa is a continent of 53 countries and each with a unique style of cooking and individual flavors (credibility re: I lived in Ghana for a bit). The menu claims a couple of their dishes are "north African." To translate, this means the food is pretty curry-esque & emphasis on the sauce. The service was confused and hurried, but helpful and they ultimately delivered without attitude or complaint. There is one African woman in the kitchen and the others are of different ethnicities. I tend to be suspicious of quality & authenticity when ethnic food is cooked by someone not of the heritage. The kitchen is open so you can see things being prepared - there are no hats or hairnets worn, so that is another risk you take when eating here. It's good that it's a lot of curry so it would all gets boiled out eventually... right? Portions are small, BYO liquor. Comes off as lower-to-mid-priced but because you're basically forced to buy side dishes with the main meal to make it well-rounded, in total it's about $20/person. I recommend eating family style with 1 main dish and 1 side dish for each individual at minimum (carbs like rice, couscous, or flat bread are considered side dishes). While the place is fairly small and they could join tables together, I wouldn't bring a group bigger than 4 people here as anything more would make family-style sharing rather difficult for everyone to taste test everything because the portions are so small. Chicken and lamb are their best, most succulent dishes. Lamb felt like it melted in my mouth before I even started chewing. The fish, on the other hand, was dry and overcooked. Would not order it again. Went well with the African flat bread, however. Wouldn't recommend this spot to anyone, but wouldn't mind going here again if we were in the area and someone was really curious about African food.

There was only one staff waiting tables when we were there. It took a while before we got the menu, also took a while after we ordered before we were told that that one of the dishes would take too long to make and that we should order something else. We ordered a chicken dish, but received a lamb dish instead. Because it took so long for the dish to be served, we didn't say anything and just ate the lamb instead. Also the veggie dishes were served cold and they were served way before the main dish arrived. The food was alright, it was good but I wasn't a fan of the cold veggies; so it wasn't for me.

The key here, is that they do each dish well and there's not just one specific focus or specialty. Mexican tacos Lamb shoulder, refried beans, red cabbage, corn tortilla, mint yogurt and hot sauce. With lime. Can get a bit messy and the plate wasn't wide enough to prevent some liquid leakage. Love the yogurt and hot sauce pairing, which really characterizes the dish because the lamb, while juicy, doesn't carry much flavor on its own. Katoomba fried chicken KFC Marinated thighs, cabbage slaw, wasabi mayo, allspice and lime. Nice big bowl of zesty slaw - the chicken is average, hard fried. Not bone-in. Singapore Laksa Rice noodles, prawns, boiled egg, fish cake, tofu puffs, bean sprouts and coriander. Easily the best of the lot, particularly on a cold and gloomy day. Theres so much action going on here - fresh plump shrimp, diverse textures and flavors as well has a tummy quenching broth. Some takeaways for no bathrooms and you have to bus your own dishes. That's all.

Situated in Surry hills near a number of local shelters, it is situated perfectly for diners to really understand what they're contributing to. It is there to encourage compassion and understanding of others. What is remarkable in this financial driven world is that 100% of the profits are used to enact change. The pay wages, staff and then profits are 50% selected by staff and 50% selected by customers. You place a rubber ball in a jar and the money goes to different charities. On the counter we're some amazing brownies, friands and other cakes. We opted for dining in and sat outside, ordering a granola with yogurt, milk, rhubarb and poached pear. A lovely little dish. We also got the fried haloumi with poached eggs and salad. Accompanied with a cup of brewed tea and a cold brew. Great breakfast options and a lovely environment. Servings may seem a little small, but you can always get a sweet treat to go.
