Full disclosure before we start: we went to Nancy's with friends of more than twenty years, and whenever you bring excellent company to a restaurant, the restaurant gets an unfair advantage on the review. That's the case here. Nancy's sits at the halfway point between our respective homes, which is the first thing it has going for it. The second thing is bigger: this is authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza in Southern Illinois, right off I-55, about an hour from St. Louis. Let's get the pizza snob argument out of the way. Giordano's, Pizzeria Uno, Lou Malnati's, Nancy's, everyone in Chicago has a hill they'll die on, and the snobs can have their way. I'm not rating this place on whether it has the best deep dish in the world. I'm rating it on a simpler question: is this a place you'd go out of your way for? Yes. If my appetite is calling for real Chicago deep dish, I'd drive the hour. Would I go twice in one day? Not possible. Two large slices of this pizza and your body files a formal objection to a second visit. The pizza itself is a bouncer. The room has a modern, franchise-feel look to it, clean and comfortable, with a small bar. I had the Cowboy Margarita, which is the first margarita I've ever had rimmed with sugar instead of salt. Tequila and rum together, sweet enough that it's really more of a cotton candy take on a margarita. Cowgirl Margarita might be the more honest name. Not my usual lane, but I finished it, happily. We started with two orders of loaded waffle fries, one with parmesan, ranch and bacon, one with pesto. This is junk-food-forward bar food and it does the trick. Both were solid, neither is the reason you make the drive. Middle of the road for loaded fries. But the pizza holds up. Nice flaky pie crust on the outside, doughy underneath, and a heavy casserole interior of cheese, meats and sauce, which is exactly what some pizza snobs will point at when they tell you Chicago deep dish isn't a pizza at all, it's a casserole with a crust. Fine. Call it what you want. Is it my favorite pizza? Probably not. Does it deliver on exactly what I came for? Absolutely. Service was fine, and I'll leave it there. We were a party of nine, and I couldn't tell from our server's disposition whether we were putting her out or she simply had other places to be. She was a bit particular, and it never felt especially warm. In fairness, we were so wrapped up in our own conversation that a more attentive server might have been a distraction. But you notice when the warmth isn't there, and it wasn't. We'd go back. This is the kind of restaurant you can rely on: it'll be there, it'll be consistent, and it'll deliver the thing it promises. 4.0 out of 5 stars. Genuine warmth from the service, add a solid old fashioned or straight forward classic cocktail to the mix and this place moves closer to a 5. If Nancy's Pizzeria were a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: it's Sam Wilson, The Falcon, in the years before he picked up the shield. Dependable, strong, always shows up when you need him, does the job without much drama. Not the headliner yet, and maybe never needs to be. But you'd never leave him off the team. read more

Although we have eaten there before, it's been a few years and this review focuses on the takeout quality and experience. I like this place enough that we get it 2-3 times a year even though we live about an hour away (driving 2 hours out of your way with no other errands or stops along the route is a lot for pizza). It's clean, just off the highway, and attached to a hotel. Every time we go I think of all of the restaurants attached to hotels that I have had when traveling for work and how few of them were even in the same approximate quality realm as this place. The wait staff have always been pleasant and competent with a couple of stand out great experiences. But the food - the bone in wings are good. They are normal sized, not steroid franken-chicken. There are several sauce options, but we like the traditional buffalo. Salad is good. Like the wings, it is solid. The pizza is why we go. We get the Chicago style although the thin crust is decent, too. The sausage and pepperoni are balanced, the vegetables delicious, the crust and tomatoes very nice, and best of all the cheese is mozzarella and old school. Nothing tastes plasticky and frankenfood. It reminds me of restaurants 25 years ago. Highly recommend, even if it's a long drive. read more

The problem with Chicago style pizza (pan or thin tavern crust) is it really isn't very good outside of Chicago. Many restaurants think pictures of the Chicago Cubs on the walls make them authentic. This wasn't at all the case at Nancy's. They WERE authentic. I'm embarrassed to say my expectations weren't too high-I was just hungry. On the road home I saw Nancy's sign on the road as we were driving. We stopped for a quick pizza and were happy we did. Nancy's pizza was close if not exactly as I remembered it last time I ate at Nancy's in the Chicago area. Just an excellent pizza. We ordered the stuffed pizza which as I said, was excellent. Checking out other tables, the thin looked great as well. I'm convinced that unless you buy your ingredients from the Chicago area, your pizza will not have that Chicago taste-thick or thin. Praise goes to this franchise owner for "sticking to the formula"! I've been disappointed enough that I need to be a bit euphoric when it's great. Caesar salad is great, and so are their pasta dishes (Tuscan rigatoni is the best). Wings are good also. Service is always friendly and quick. We ate at this Nancy's once before right after they opened and it was OK. DH had been in St. Louis, so I called in an order for him to pick up on the way home. I ordered a small deep dish (they also call it Chicago and Stuffed -- confusing! Use the same name all the time!) with ground been and green olives. DH is lactose intolerant, so I ordered the Tuscan Rigatoni pasta for him. The menu says the sauce is tomato cream, so I asked the lady if I could get meat sauce instead. She said that would be no problem. I explained he's lactose intolerant -- no dairy (I always add that since, surprisingly, many don't understand what "lactose intolerant" means) and she said it's made with marinara anyway. I said that would be OK provided there's no cream like the menu says. She said oh, no, just marinara. Also ordered bread sticks, hold the parmesan. Placed the order and let DH know to stop and pick it up. He did -- order was supposedly ready. They tried to give him the wrong order, just a large pizza. He said that's not right, so they had to look more. Found the right order, he paid, and came home. My pizza looked great. He took his pasta out and we immediately knew the sauce was tomato cream, NOT marinara. He opened the bread sticks and they are covered with parmesan cheese!! Do these people actually listen when taking the order and write it down, for heavens sake. Does the kitchen read it???? My pizza was good -- not like what you get in Chicago, but good enough. As for the pasta -- who knows? It went in the trash, so half of a $42 order was wasted. We're 45 minutes away so a waste to take it back. Morale of the story -- check your order before you leave! Stayed next door at Hampton Inn, ordered a large pepperoni, green pepper, onion and mushroom to go. Paired that bad boy with a bottle of cab we packed . The pizza was better than average and far better than anything we get at home. The service was great, the restaurant was pretty busy for a Thursday night at 7 so they must be doing something right. I give them one star for the nice waitress, but you ever leave somewhere and then it makes you think of what just happened, like that didn't seem right. So, I ordered a drink, wings and a small Rocco's Party deep dish. I then saw Yelp offered a 20% coupon off 1st pizza. I asked the waitress about it and she dropped off the bill with the discount. We start eating and she came by once of twice and when she dropped off the pizza, she said "Oh, disregard that receipt, I rang it up wrong." Ummm...okay. Pizza is bland and wings a bit dry. So, afterwards she gives me the new bill. The 1st bill she charged me about $20.xx for the pizza and with the discount, the bill was $36.xx. The 2nd bill, the pizza is $24.85 and total is $39.65. Huh! I paid it, but started to think about it when we left like, hmmmm.....did she jack up the price because of the 20% coupon which would be shady. So, coming home, I see the small deep dish is $13.95 and $1.85 for each ingredient. Which is $13.95 + $7.40 (sausage, mushrooms, onions & green peppers.) = $21.35. Why buy the Rocco's Party if it's cheaper to buy the ingredients alone? I don't know........left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I used to visit Chicago regularly, and Nancy's is as good as most of the shops there. I love that there's an option closer to STL (although we still can't get one IN the city!) for when I get a hankering. The sauce isn't overly sweet, toppings are delicious, and service has always been friendly when I've had a pickup. Be prepared for a wait, but that's just the nature of ha having massive quantities of cheesy goodness baked into a crust that's hefty enough to hold it all together. We have driven by this place so many times and finally decided to try it. Service was good and waitress was friendly but the food was meh. I started with a salad. It was a big salad! Unfortunately they were heavy on the dressing and some of the greens did not look super fresh but it was doable. The dressing itself had a great flavor. My husband got their deep Chicago style pizza and I got the regular pizza. Their crust was so bland. Really did not excite either of us. We were out antiquing and got hungry! Hubby has been wanting to try this place so today was the day! The inside is decorated very nice. We we're seated quickly by a very nice person. Our server showed up almost instantly and took our drink order. She was super friendly and made us feel welcome. I got the Caesar salad and okay...wasn't expecting it to be the best I've ever had! It has different kinds of lettuce, bacon and the most delicious crunchy croutons! For me, Caesar dressing can make or break the salad. This dressing was perfect...Which means I couldn't taste the anchovies. Seriously good salad! We got the thin, crispy pizza. It's the almost cracker like crust that I love. The sauce isn't spicy at all, but a little sweet and they load your pie with tons of cheese! It's cut in squares which I also like; easier to eat! Great experience at Nancy's! I think this would be closer to 3.5 but Yelp doesn't allow you to do 1/2 stars. We ordered the garlic bread with tomatoes as an appetizer. That was okay. I did like the sauce it came with. Then we ordered the deep dish pizza, which they're known for, 1/2 ham 1/2 pepperoni. It was good but it hardly had any pepperoni or ham. At one point we couldn't tell which slice was which and even the server had trouble. You should be able to see and taste the topping not just cheese and sauce. I liked the sauce thou. This is the first time we had visited Nancy's since the pandemic hit and wow! What a decline in quality! I went ahead and gave it a two star because the waitress was exceptional. She was friendly and very service oriented. Great experience with the service. The food quality on the other hand was very poor. Garbage salad came with all the topping separated around the edge of the bowl. We spent ten minutes building and chopping our salad and then the balsamic vinaigrette was not good at all so it ruined the salad for us completely. It used to be a great salad. Then we ordered the Specialty Uncle Tony's pizza. It used to come piled with toppings and we have always loved it. This time they were so skimpy with the toppings that it was almost just a cheese pizza. My husband's first slice had zero meat on it and mine had one piece of Italian sausage and a half a piece of pepperoni. Check out my picture to see what I mean. First, our waitress Karen was great but we were very disappointed overall. We always stop in Litchfield when traveling between Arkansas and Wisconsin and Nancy's has always been favorite stop until tonight. We had the grandkids with us and they wanted pasta so they each got the kids buttered noodles. A half cup (at the most) of spaghetti with butter was $6.80 each and the kids, ages 3 & 7 were still hungry. The manager would not talk to us but through the waitress said there was nothing she could do. Then our pizza came out, a medium (serves 2-3) was $25 (not a deep dish). The toppings only covered 2/3 of the pizza so after giving the kids the middle 4 pieces my wife and I ended up eating mostly crust.
