Doing my part to keep menus updated.

Place is UBER BUSY on Sunday. They have really good onion rings, but honestly I have not eaten here in a few months. I'm waiting to pick up my lunch as I type this, will try to remember to update this later today. It just drives me nuts when places don't have a menu posted online, so I'm uploading it now. (Edit 2 days later) So the food was great, I had the mushroom burger, and onion rings. The onion rings are still as good as when I had them the first time! And my burger was was big, juicy and tasted awesome! I would guess the meat is well over 1/4 of a pound, so unless your really hungry or a really big boy, the double meat burger they offer might be way too much to eat. My grandmother had the kids meal chicken strips, and they were good quality real strips of chicken breast, not the cheap frozen kind, the batter was light and crispy almost like the onion ring batter. Overall really good food, and will definitely eat here again.

Sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. Couldn't get a picture fast enough before he took a bite.

Just passing through. Checked Yelp, saw all the stars and decided this place was the best place for a quick lunch. So glad we did. Nice little diner with great food.

Review for Lone Star Diner…read more I recently ordered takeout from Lone Star Diner and was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food and the generous portions. I had the Chicken Fried Steak special with a baked potato (butter and sour cream), and it was exceptionally tasty--perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. While my onion rings were unfortunately left out of the order, it turned out to be a minor issue because my grandmother and I shared her side of fried okra, which was served in a large portion. My grandmother, who is 98 and typically eats very little, ordered the small three-piece chicken strip meal but was pleasantly surprised to receive six large strips. These weren't your typical frozen chicken tenders; they were clearly cut from fresh breast meat and appeared to be hand-breaded. The fried okra was also excellent--crispy, flavorful, and abundant. Since this was a takeout order, I can't comment on the dine-in experience, but the pickup process at the drive-thru window was smooth and convenient. Lone Star Diner delivers exactly what you'd hope for in small-town comfort food: great flavors, generous portions, and a sense of hospitality even with takeout. Highly recommend if you're in the area and craving a hearty, homestyle meal!

I passed through winters on the way to Colorado, and stopped at Lone Star for a bite to eat. We were met by the owner, Ms Linda, and a waitress, Whitney. Both of them were so welcoming, and really made us feel at home. We had the daily special, a plate of fried catfish, and a slice of blackberry cobbler for dessert. All of the recipes are Ms Linda's, and they are DELICIOUS. The catfish was perfect, crispy and flavorful, and we had some of her homemade tartar sauce to dip. For the sides we had baked potatoes (BEST baked potato I've ever eaten- seriously) and green beans. The blackberry cobbler was made with blackberries from the owners garden, and homemade. While we were eating, Ms Linda came by and chatted with us about the town, the restaurant, her recipes, and asked us about where we were headed. Eating at this restaurant feels like stopping by your grandmas house for dinner, homey, delicious, and feel-good. Next time I'm passing through Winters, I will definitely be stopping by Lone Star for another piece of cobbler!

The parking spaces in front are limited, but there is street parking. I was by myself and took a seat over to the side. There is one big dining room with tables along the walls and in the center. The kitchen and restrooms are in the back. This is a family style restaurant, with just a few decorations like a mural of a Mexican scene on one wall. Everything appeared clean as far as I could see. My server was pleasant and brought me some chips and salsa. Chips are the typical thin American style. The salsa is medium spicy, tomatoey and zipped in a blender. I ordered the "guiso plate" and was told I could choose between hand made flour or store-bought corn tortillas. I prefer corn, so I was promptly served the carne guisada along with corn tortillas (which were quite good). The carne guisada had more of an American gravy texture and taste than most carne guisada I have had in Mexico. But I slathered the salsa over it and that pepped it up. This is not a trendy place nor super fancy, but you can find good food and pleasant service. As I left I requested some iced tea to go, and they were happy to oblige, and that was nice as I had a long drive ahead of me. I would go back when I have occasion to go through Ballinger.

Ballinger, Texas…read more Stopped at this cute sandwich shop on my way to San Antonio. It's a quarter after noon and we had to wait to get a table. Seems like the hotspot in town. Love the American flag on the brick wall on the interior of the restaurant. The restaurant has high ornate ceilings. There are two booths in the main dining room by the windows and many tables with chairs. This is a very old building with lots of original detail. The bathroom is just one toilet, which all genders share. It is not handicap accessible and very small. The stairs that lead to the top floor are full of dust. I would suggest occasionally cleaning them so that they are not dirty to look at while dining. The napkins are dispensed by a napkin holder on the table. Drinks are served in oversize plastic cups while some people have Styrofoam cups. The cutlery is real with a mixture of glass dishes and red plastic baskets with red and white checkered paper. Multiple sandwich choices with choice of bread. They offer hamburgers, daily specials such as quiche, catfish, and salads. Every plate comes with chips, pickle and a homemade cookie. I ordered the Waldorf chicken sandwich. It is made with chicken breast, grapes, apples, celery, walnuts, and mayonnaise. I also chose the oatmeal raisin cookie. My husband ordered today's special, which is chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll. They aren't sure if it is still available at 12:30 in the afternoon so he ordered a hamburger as a back up. It took quite some time for us to receive our food. From the time that we sat to the time, our food was received was more than 45 minutes. Three tables walked in after us, and they were all served food before us. The waitress came over and told us we were next as she saw we were perplexed. I enjoyed the Waldorf chicken salad with squaw bread. My disappointment was potato chips had a few large ones on top and as soon as I ate, those, the rest were tiny pieces that were broken. My husband was not able to get the special of the day. Being so early in the day, it was odd to see they had run out. So the burger was served. Tasted fine, but again the potato chips were nothing but small pieces underneath the larger few on top. Had to ask for silverware. Never received a refill on my drink. In fact, the waitstaff only came by only two times after we ordered. Once to tell us, our food would be coming up and then when it was delivered. Overall, I was pleased with the way my food tasted. I understand. They were very busy for lunch hour on a Tuesday afternoon however, perhaps more than two people should be waiting the tables for the whole restaurant. This inconvenience to me having to wait for something that I should have taken no more than 15 minutes, cuts severely into my reading. Another frustration is that they charge 4% if you use your credit card to pay. I own a business and the max that one is charged from the credit card 2.8% to 3%. Why did they fail in need to charge more? Overall, I would give this place 4.3 stars. I would come back to this restaurant. However, I would come in earlier in the day so that I could get the special that they offer as well as more timely service.

I had a stuffed avocado with one half of the avocado filled with jalapeño pimento cheese salad and the other filled with tuna salad. He had a pickle and potato chips on the side. A choice of a chocolate chip, outmeal raisin, or snickerdoodle cookie was included with each of our meals. The pies looked delicious, but we were already very satisfied.

We were recently in town visiting family and wanted to eat before we left town to go home. The well-known place we used to eat now closes on Sundays. That's their loss because we've declared the Dun Bar our new Sunday lunch spot when we're in town. Thelma was our server and she was just delightful. This is probably the most hole in the wall place I've ever given full stars. Don't get me wrong, I love a hole in the wall, but sometimes the food in a hole in the wall is a little boring. Like this food, it was so simple, chicken fried steaks, grilled chicken breast, a Thanksgiving lunch on Sundays, side salads, humble sides... but it's all so absolutely ridiculously GOOD. We started with the large plate of onion rings (which is $7.50, btw, you won't find that anywhere else) and my sister lost her mind about them. lol For our entrees we had two chicken fried steak plates (different sides) and a grilled chicken plate. The gravy is served on the side, family style, and it was probably one of the best gravys I've ever had. It's not just flour and water, it tasted more complex like it had broth in it as well. Somehow with the modest price of these very flavorful dishes, they still give you free dessert. Very generous. I typically hate carrot cake, but this cake was moist and really good. It was almost like a spice cake, very well done. Do not sleep on this place. The surroundings are run down, the motel behind it has seen better days, but the food is legit and the kindness can't be beat. If you go on a Sunday, ask for Thelma and tell her the girls from Fort Worth say hi.
