Just got my third tattoo this past weekend, all 3 of which have been done by artists at Name Brand Tattoo, and I can tell you that I have absolutely loved every single tattoo experience here! This 3rd tattoo was definitely my favorite experience though, probably because it might now be my favorite tattoo. John was my tattoo artist and he was so friendly and welcoming from the moment he opened the door. My first two tattoos were done at Name Brand's previous location on Washington Street, so this was my first time in their new Main Street space. I absolutely LOVE the Main Street space and hope they stay here for a while because I'm eager to return. It's a great environment and it's hard to describe, but it just feels exactly like how I wish for a tattoo shop to feel to put you at ease! My friend and I both got tattooed by John. He took us through all the steps, was so organized and helpful, was upfront about the pricing (very solid pricing btw - I got a medium sized tattoo for $140, my friend got 4 small tattoos for $200), was open and talkative with us, sharing his experience, which I really appreciated, and we just really loved all the vibes all around. Good people, good music, STUNNING tattoos! Can't thank Name Brand & John enough! Appointment was so easy to set up and I know this tattoo shop has been going for over two decades, so they seriously know what they're doing and are fully professional while not feeling stuffy or weird. Yo, straight up? This is the greatest establishment I have ever been to in my life. I can not stress this enough. THE GREATEST IN MY LIFE!!!!! Everyone who works here is a fuckin' badass. The polish guy, Tomahs (sp?), is kinda fucked up in a sick way tho. Don't get me wrong, his tattoos are flawless and he is very accommodating. He has this weird thousand yard stare, like he's been through some serious shit and he doesn't give a FUCK about what you've done in your life. He KNOWS you don't know SHIT! He never lets you get a word in edge wise and is constantly harassing you about what you think, but he's nice about it in a "I'm a dickhead" sort of way. What I'm trying to say is, he is the best "tattoo-ist" they got, man. Wow....What an energy... Plus, I'm pretty sure I heard that he's vegan so, I think that means his tattoos are "certified organic". They don't have a piercer at all which is extremely refreshing. Tomek was the artist I worked with, and I can't say enough good things about him. He walked me through my 'first tattoo' nervousness, discussed what I wanted, and triple checked that what he saw was what I saw in the project. He answered all my questions, made sure I knew what I needed to do for aftercare, and kept me talking during the procedure to keep me distracted. Super clean shop, super friendly people that work there. It was nice to walk into a shop with a very clean, minimal esthetic, and with out blaring heavy metal music. Another thing which was nice was that I was able to call and get a same day appointment. Cole did my tattoo, and not only was he really mellow and calming, but I love how my tattoo turned out. He was professional and patient with me during the placement process as well. The only reason I didn't give this shop five stars is because 1) I wish there was more privacy. The shop has an area where three or four guys share an open floor plan type of area, not super private if you're getting a rib/under breastbone tat and have to take off your shirt. To be fair, I didn't ask if there was another private area or some sort of divider to put up. 2) Prices are steep. I am happy to pay for good art and a good experience, but dang, it was a steep hole in my pocket compared to any other shop I'd been to. This is - hands down - the cleanest, friendliest, most professional tattoo shop I have have set foot in. After searching relentlessly for a reputable artist to rework/cover-up a large tattoo on my leg and being turned away by several who claimed they had no interest in working on existing art (in other words, no interest in helping me), I was referred to Jeff Zuck. I am so thankful I didn't get discouraged, made the drive from Ferndale to Ann Arbor and talked to one, final artist. Not only did Jeff agree to help with the cover-up, he gave me exactly what I wanted from the tattoo in the first place. It was far better than I ever expected. I am thrilled that I now have an artist I can trust to deliver top quality work for all tattoos I decide to get in the future. And talk about a clean shop! You get what you pay for. Name Brand may seem a little pricey, but a tattoo is forever, and it pays to go for quality. Name Brand delivers. Nick Z did an outstanding job. I checked out a number of places for my first and only tattoo, both through word of mouth and in person. A good friend suggested Name Brand, so I dropped by to check them out. From start to finish, my experience was positive. The receptionist (not really a receptionist, but she handled the walk-ins who had questions) was polite and relaxed and made me feel comfortable browsing and checking out the artists' books. I told her what I was looking for, and she recommended Nick Z for the job, probably not coincidentally the same artist that I had already chosen based on samples of work. I set up an appointment ($60 deposit) and when I returned, I was very happy to see the competence and confidence that Nick displayed. He was obviously extremely experienced with the instruments of his trade, and set them up quickly and professionally. Attention to detail and hygiene were obvious. We confirmed everything about what I wanted based on an emailed jpg I had sent the store earlier. I doublechecked a couple of details (because you don't want to make a mistake at this point), and Nick confirmed that we were in agreement about what I wanted. Nick soon got into the zone and worked quickly and efficiently. One of his workmates was more inclined to talk with his own client, but Nick was not distracted (which I appreciated), staying fully focused on the job at hand. After the inking was done, Nick bandaged the tattooed area and gave me both written and verbal information on how to care for the tattoo for the next few days. I followed his directions to the letter and it healed perfectly. I was impressed by both the craftsmanship of the tattoo itself and his emphasis on new tattoo care. Nick calculated a reasonable fee based on the time. I tipped about 25% because of the excellence shown throughout the entire process. I have no plans for any more tattoos, but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to go to Name Brand again. Highly recommended. read more

I fleshed out my idea for a tattoo, and he was very friendly and willing to answer the questions I had. I wasn't sure about whether I wanted a tattoo, and waited more than 7 months before finally making an appointment to have it done. After reminding him what I wanted and giving him some more details, he prepared a sketch and asked me for feedback and seemed very willing to make changes. The atmosphere in the shop is pretty relaxed and friendly, and I never felt under pressure or nervous in my decision-making. I think the atmosphere and decor of the studio and Jeff's laid back style really helped me relax despite my never having been tattooed before. My tattoo was completed in a little over an hour (plus about 35 minutes of sketch time), and I really like it a lot. I highly recommend Name Brand Tattoo, and Jeff, the owner of the studio, but based on the artist portfolios on their website, I believe you can get a great tattoo from any of the artists in the studio. read more

Before I chose Name Brand, I did research online about other businesses but ultimately picked their location since it had good reviews across the web. From the beginning, I was in contact with someone via email. The contact was very helpful and quick to respond about all my questions regarding the design that I had created. I had originally inquired about Jeff Zuck doing my tattoo but they directed me to another artist that had more experience with my type of design. The tattoo parlor was clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly and Chad Hunt, the artist I worked with, did a great job. Before going in, I was a bit worried as to whether or not they would be able to get my design to look like it had been painted on to my skin, but he got the gradients just right and I was extremely satisfied. So I paid my 60 dollar retainer the day before and gave them the idea I wanted, I come in the next day and have him draw something simple up. I don't like it tht much and so I tell him I am going with a traditional piece now, something smaller anyways. He tells me "I'm wasting his time and He is not going to re draw me something else up" I PAID HIM 60 dollars for a 15 min drawing & he tells me I am wasting his time bc I didn't like that piece!! I'd rather go with a normal traditional?!! The money I paid him to draw was wasting his time??? I even told him obviously I'm prepared to pay more than just the retainer fee, I got so mad I walked out and figured I'll just give them a bad review. IVE NEVER been talked so down to especially for my business.. I told him earlier I didn't have a price limit & and I am just looking for a quality piece- obviously he wasn't the right person, especially someone who was irritated putting permanent ink on me doesn't seem like a great idea. Anyways tomik kept my 60 dollars after telling me he won't re draw me anything more after I told him I have more money, then proceeded to tell me I wasting his time to draw me a tattoo that I want. I shopped around all over Ann Arbor to find the best place, and just judging by portfolios and professionalism, I have to say that Name Brand is DEFINITELY your best bet. Back in May I got my second tattoo at Name Brand and, again, the experience was perfect. I know I don't look like the typical person who gets tattooed but if it were up to me I'd be covered. Sometimes I think the people who work here hate when someone like me walks in but they do a good job covering it up. My girlfriend wanted to get her second tattoo, a beautiful floral piece, right near her first, a goddess on her thigh. I wanted the solidarity fist on my right inner forearm. Jen M. worked with my girlfriend and I have to say, I was impressed with her absolute unwavering comitment to certain decisions she's made as an artist. I love my friend very, very much but she is a tough cookie and can pretty much change anyone's mind. She wanted her tattoo to have no outline but Jen sat with her and explained that she doesn't do tattoos like that, why, and discussed the aesthetic pieces of it. There's something to be said for an artist having a set of rules and saying, "You can get that but I won't do it," and not because she didn't like the artwork but because her understanding of her style and tattoos in general. She wanted the piece to look the best it could. And it did - she did an amazing job on my friend's new piece. Mine was a much smaller, simpler, black only tattoo. Cole did it for me quickly and easily. There's not much to say about it - other than that I'm pleased with it. Cole was friendly, quick and professional and since this one was in a little more sensitive area than the last, I appreciated that he was a little chatty. I learned a serious lesson from this tattoo that I want to share and please notice my 5-star review (again) which means that I take FULL responsibility for the following but wanted to share it because I think it's important, especially for people new to tattoos: The artists who work at this shop are competent, knowledgeable professionals who excel at what they do. The shop is expensive. You get what you pay for. The processis sometimes long: they spend time making sure you get exactly what you ask for and if you're a walk in you might have to wait or even come back another day. Please make sure that you follow all directions carefully once you leave. My first tattoo was on my upper back so I couldn't really get to it/look at it/show it to people. Because it was my first I followed the shop's and my artist's directions for care to a tee. Yeah, not so much this time. It's right THERE! I can see it. OTHERS can see it. I uncovered it too quickly, my shirts constantly rubbed on it, I was not nearly as mindful or careful as I should have been and ended up with an irritation that got infected. Antibiotics, steroids and significant pain. In the end it was fine but remember, tattoo artists are not just hipsters who can draw - they are incredibly knowledgeable about the whole process and you should listen to and follow their advice thoroughly! read more

I can't say enough about how positive my experience with Jeff Zuck, the owner of Name Brand, was. Being my first tattoo, I was somewhat hesitant to make the very permanent decision of an artist/shop, but something about Jeff's online portfolio spoke to me, and luckily I was able to secure an appointment a week in advance. The shop itself is clean and the decorations stylish, with instrumental post-rock playing. Jeff was extremely personable, and conversational enough to put you at ease while still being tactful. He was also patient enough to re-place a stencil a few times and talk through decisions about placement; I never felt rushed or like he saw me only as just another customer. The work itself was wonderfully done -- the lines are clean, the healing has been minimal, and I feel grateful that he was able to bring my idea to life. Throughout the tattoo, we spoke about the importance of the tradition taking place, and you could tell by his philosophy that he truly believes in his art. The price was not as expensive as other reviewers have made it seem ($150 for a little over an hour of consultation, prep, and work), but then again, I don't think you can really put a price (or should be looking for a bargain) on a quality tattoo. If you're looking for a professional, positive tattoo experience, I highly recommend Jeff and Name Brand. read more

Got my first tattoo here and so did my husband. Kerri was great about answering questions over email and looking at designs and helping answer questions and quotes. Nick M (there's two Nicks) did both of our tattoos. He was nice, laid back, and patient. He says as of now, he's been tattooing for 3 years and has done some schooling in graphics design. He says he was trained by the owner of the store. He was great about letting up on the needle at all the right times when the skin needed a break. I didn't find the experience especially painful. Took about 2 hours for mine. However, there is also a consulting and sketch process. My husband and i together spent s total of 5 hours there. Most importantly, he wanted to make sure we were happy. Sometimes it can be hard for artists to change their aesthetic to please another person, but he was very helpful in suggestions and I think our tastes matched up pretty well. The studio is pretty clean. There are mobile dividers for people getting tattooed in more private areas, but it's not a bunch of different rooms. It was pretty comfortable and we felt at home here. No one was rude as others have mentioned some tattoo places in Ann Arbor are, and they were very chill. Do not be worried by the framed tattoos in the lobby. They are older traditional tattoos to help people think of ideas. They are quite capable of doing more modern works. We were very happy with our experience and Nick's work. read more

When I walked into Name Brand Tattoo, I was expecting to see tables laid out with people getting tattoos done right there in front of the window, loud music, and a bunch of needles. Instead, I was greeted by an air conditioned, beautiful lobby with framed art all around that makes you want 20 more tattoos instead of just the one that you came there for. I only waited about 5 minutes before Tomek came out to talk to me about what I was planning on getting. I had a printed version of the very specific design that I wanted, and since it was an all-black outline about the size of a fist, there wasn't much to talk about. He told me he would have an opening in an hour and could help me. One of the great things about Tomek is that he is very straightforward with you and wants to help you get exactly the tattoo that you want. When I came back an hour later, Tomek was ready for me within 5 minutes and took me into the back where there were very clean facilities and a comfortable atmosphere. Tomek is a little quieter, if you're looking for someone to coddle you through the process, he's not going to do it. Honestly, I love this about him. He's so chill and calm that if you're nervous it calms you down too and he's a really awesome and badass guy in general. I would recommend him because he's very professional with his art and a fantastic artist. He gets your tattoo done quickly and does it exactly how you want it, making sure it's perfect before he even starts with the needle. My tattoo ended up costing about $100 which is a little more expensive, but completely worth it to get it done at a place that was this clean, comfortable, and that recreated my design perfectly. I have had no problems with the healing, they make the upkeep of your tattoo very clear and easy to follow. Bottom-line, this is the place you want to go, and it's the place that I will be coming back to as soon as I can decide what to get next. read more

Went in to get my first ever tattoo, and was greeted with people who knew what they were talking about - I was contemplating a finger tattoo, but I was warned about fading, distortion, and pain. I came back after a week of thought and decided I wanted to get it on my chest instead. I just walked in, no appointment necessary, and immediately got help from Nick. I told him what I generally wanted, and he drew it out and tatted me up within half an hour! I love my tattoo, and Name Brand was very clean, with friendly artists. I got my tattoo on February 6th, about two and a half months ago, and it has healed incredibly well with no problems!
