Nalini Method is consistently one of my favorite classes on Classpass. The MMAC location is also very convenient for me... otherwise it might be a hike for some people getting off at the Columbus Circle subway station. Nalini Method is super friendly and welcoming as a whole, so first-timers need not be scared! Nobody looks like they are going to eat you in this class. It's also a very nice studio, located at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center (MMAC) on 60th St between Amsterdam and West End (10th and 11th aves). Make sure you check the schedule though, because sometimes this class is located on 68th St - I've never gone to that one and don't intend to. Rupa learns your name the first time and almost rarely forgets it... unless you're like me and go very inconsistently. I've been to Nalini Method about 5 times now, all through Classpass. She is also one of the most attentive instructors and will give you feedback on how your form is. She also takes the time to explain each movement and which muscle you are targeting. It's barre, its cardio, and it's stretching... all in one class! It also feels like a work out and is consistently challenging every time. Rupa is super energetic and keeps the class going at a non-stop pace. This class hits abs, arms, thighs, butt... everything! The ankle weights also add a dimension you won't usually find in a barre class. I will say, though, the class format doesn't change all too much in the times I've gone so far. I've done the same things at least 2-3 times by now. Sometimes the order switches up, or we do a major ab-targeting work out at the end. I highly recommend Nalini Method to anyone who is used to a normal barre class, but looking for something more challenging. read more

I love Bar classes. I have done 4 out of 5 of my classes from a special I bought and I have to say I am quite pleased. I have 5 stars but I would say 4.5 but that's because IF I could pick a few things to perfect it, I would BUT not enough to change the rating down to 4. Classes: Pretty solid Barre class but actually quite unique moves. Same general theme as all barre classes but different and I don't know what she's doing next. Some classes you know and dread what's next and these classes totally catch you by surprise. The cardio at the beginning (very short) sucks because I am lazy and don't want to jump and squat but I know at the end of class I'll be glad I did. Different from many bar classes- sometimes I just need to stop during the reps. I think I am in pretty good shape but that burn is killer! All good things. Classes are smooth and well thought out. Some different props than other Barre classes. As we know all barre studios have something different. I don't hate the abs here probably because there is no wall work which I hate because I cannot do it. Music: Great music. Very important when your body is working. My kind of tunes. Instructors: Rupa is adorable. A beautiful woman with a great gift for teaching. She will correct form and pay individual attention and try to learn your name right away. I also had another woman and she was wonderful as well. Space: The space is shared with other dance and arts classes so there are a lot of people around depending on when you take class. No locks- bring your own. Womens and mens rooms within a locker room. Many teenagers in the locker rooms- again depending on time. Actual studio, clean bright, good space. Ambience: Supportive, hard working. Nice people, not cliquey. No egos, no gym-wear fashion show. Front desk people always very pleasant. What would I change? I would make it in its own space with own bathroom etc. Also, socks.....since I have ugly runners feet nobody needs to see that. A wine bar inside. OK now, I know I am pushing it but wouldn't wine and cheese be nice after? I would love to quit my current job and have an exercise studio as a career so I admire Rupa for having a successful business.......Bottom Line: If you like Bar classes or want to try a fun way to tone and get strong, I highly recommend giving this Method a try! read more

First off, there's 2 entrances. One side is the Cafe, the other is for Nalini Method. They all wrap back around so it's all good. I noticed there was chaos. There are kids & mommies everywhere, eating at the cafe. This is the lobby of the apartment building. Now it all makes sense. There are lockers which are shared by the residence of the apt building. I brought my own lock to use. There are also lockers inside the bathroom as well. No need to bring your own yoga mat. They provide everything for you here. Rupa taught our class. She's energetic & calls you out (everyone) when she sees you doing something wrong. It's not in a bad way, she's being helpful. She also praises each person too if they are doing well. We used weights, yoga blocks, balls & the rubber bands. The movements are challenging & she'll make sure your muscles are working. We did floor work, weight work, & barre work. It was a little bit of everything. If there was something I couldn't do (shoulder injury), I would either not do it, or just stretch out for a little bit. Nalini Method is an absolute must-try for NYC fitness enthusiasts! It's intense and unique without being impossible (for context, I'd describe myself as intermediately fit) and Rupa herself (the founder) is a lovely, warm, inspiring and all-around fantastic leader and instructor. My class, taught by Rupa, was on a Wednesday morning, and there were about 8 of us which allowed for a highly personalized experience. Rupa recognized regular clients and gave us newbies tons of attention and guidance through the exercises, which consist of thigh-burning barre work, an ab section where my abs literally gave out, about a million pushups and 3 cumulative minutes of planks, this killer glute exercise where we placed hand weights on our hips and lifted our butts off the mat approximately a million times until my muscles burned like crazy, and arm work with free weights. The class also employs other props like blocks, ankle weights and balls. I never felt burdened, slowed down or confused by how to use any of these things thanks to Rupa's great instruction. Rupa is a joy to be in class with. Energetic and friendly, she compliments students individually when they perform movements well (and writes your name above your spot on the barre, which is a nice touch), and doesn't let you give up even when you think you've passed your physical limit. As a consequence, my legs shook, my abs were killing, my arms felt like they couldn't bend another time, but I surprised myself with what I was able to do and was sore for days afterward. This is exactly what I look for in a workout -- something that motivates me beyond what I'd push myself to do alone working out in a gym, and adds value to my routine. I subtracted one star because the locker room/shower situation was sort of awkward (it's shared with another facility) and not easily intuitive to a newcomer (towels are kept in the studio classroom, which is not attached, and you have to go to the front desk to ask for shower supplies if you don't provide your own). Overall I loved Nalini, and will definitely be back. I look forward to working it into my fitness routine! read more

Although the class was a decent class, for what they offer: very limited scheduling, terribly inconvenient location (MMAC), having to change in a storage closet, having to clean the equipment you used during class, the price ($30/class) is not justified. That means $300/ month if you wanted to work out only 10 times that month. You could join an unlimited luxury gym or take any of higher-end barre classes at this price point and receive additional perks and ambiance that Nalini just doesn't offer. Like I said the workout was good - a mix of barre, weights, short cardio burst, and stretching in between - but it needs to be more affordable for what they are offering. Also, although I took this one class on a Classitivy deal, I saw a pretty affordable, extended deal on Gilt City the next day. I asked if they would extend the offer to me (since it said "new clients only" and I had only took the one class) but flat out refused. For a gym that needs to offer discount coupons and still only fills up about 1/3 of the class, you would think they would be willing to work with people to drive loyalty and turn them into full time customers. BEST WORKOUT IN NEW YORK CITY! The Nalini Method is as good as it gets, possibly the BEST work out in New York City. Rupa, the owner, is a wonderful leader, whose warm, friendly personality keeps you focused and motivated for 60 minutes that fly by. What sets Nalini apart from other gyms and classes is Rupa (did I mention she is amazing?) and her ability to provide you with a personalized workout in a group setting. My personal experience with Nalini has been nothing shy of life-changing; my posture has improved, I'm more limber, stronger (hello holding a plank for 1-minute!) but most importantly, I have definition/tone in my muscles I didn't think was possible (yeah triceps!)! Results came quickly and are still coming thanks to the mix of stretching, weight and resistance training. If you are looking for individualization attention, a clean welcoming work-out space and a challenging but motivating class this is for you. I cannot begin to recommend Nalini high enough, it's improved my life and I owe it all to Rupa! read more

I am a fan - this class was really fun! Pros - extremely upbeat and engaging instructor, lots of personal attention / corrections, quick changes and new exercises to keep you focused, everything I could want from a class. There's the use of ankle weights which I wasn't used to, but liked. Cons - shower facilities are severely lacking, MMAC location a little bit out of the way, but only felt that way because it was cold and snowy. Front desk staff and Rupa are amazing. Both are very friendly and helpful, even when I was being super annoying with needing to go back and forth for shower toiletries and trying to find a hair dryer etc (would've gone home to shower but had plans afterwards and it was below freezing so i really needed to dry it...if you read this, thanks for putting up with me!) and they answered every question I had about the facility and class. Love this place! I was looking for something to help me get back in shape after having a baby and Nalini Method has been great so far. I've been going roughly 3 times a week since May and am definitely seeing results. My arms and legs toned up really fast and I'm feeling much stronger in the core and abs. I was worried that the workout would get boring after a few visits but that hasn't been the case at all. Every instructor has a slightly different set of exercises and no two workouts have been exactly the same yet. The hour-long sessions fly by and I always leave feeling like I challenged myself. Warning - it is an intense workout, especially your first few times. I definitely left with my legs shaking when I first started. read more

I came here through Classtivity because I've never tried a barre class before. After reading reviews and articles, I was scared about the intensity level here, especially since I've been so sore from all my other workout classes from the past week. Luckily, Rupa, the founder and my instructor, emphasized getting the form and posture right even if it means using lighter weights versus incorrectly performing moves with heavier weights. I really appreciate this teaching philosophy as I've had other instructors at different gyms not care about form as much as how heavy your dumb bells are. There is a huge selection of weights starting from 2 lbs and you are encouraged to grab 2 sets of weights (usually 4 lbs and 5 lbs). The emphasis here is more on doing multiple reps within a set with light-medium weights (toning) versus maxing out after a few reps on heavier weights (bulking). Although there's not much of a cardio section (just a few jumping jacks and jump squats to warm up), within 10 minutes, I was reduced to a puddle of sweat. The class highlights certain areas (e.g. legs, arms, butt, abs) to do strength and resistance exercises in and moves on once that section is done. Which means, when you're done with legs, you can sigh hallelujah and feel accomplished that you've completed it and not have to fear repeating those exercises during the second half of the class. Another teaching style I really like at the Nalini Method is the emphasis on correctly stretching as well after each section (e.g. legs, arms, butt, abs) is completed. I feel like too often in exercise classes, stretching is a last-minute afterthought thrown in as something everyone knows you should do but instructors don't really want to "waste" time on. Here, Rupa stresses correct form as well, elevating the importance level to the same as a wall sit or a plank. I feel like stretching is especially important for this class as you can feel the lactic acid building up in every thigh squeeze of the block. As everyone said, this is a very welcoming environment for both regulars and newbies. Rupa immediately commits your name to memory and writes it above your bar position. The crowd isn't cliquey and everyone in my class, for the most part, is fit and in their twenties to early thirties. This was probably one of my favorite Classtivity courses! read more

Good workout that challenges the entire body, but isn't so tough that you'll be totally sore the next day. You usually start out with a basic warmup, followed by arms, legs, and core/abs. The legs portion is especially tough because you work with ankle weights. There's not a lot of cardio, so I like to take this class to supplement a spinning/cardio class. I am IN LOVE with this class!!! As a person who normally hates barre classes (because they are just so boring and repetitive to me; no offense barre-lovers!), I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this class! It is the perfect combination of barre, floor work, weights, and stretching. Rupa is the sugar on top-- she has an amazing energy/approach that is upbeat and motivating. Since I discovered the Nalini Method, I've been hooked. The Nalini Method is a unique workout that incorporates upper-body, arm, leg, and ab work all while keeping a block between your legs. There is also a barre portion that can leave your legs shaking. Each part of the class ends with stretching. The instructor, Rupa, keeps a watchful eye over the class to make sure you are doing each movement correctly. Her positive energy helps keep me moving during the 7am class. While there are some signature parts to class, each week changes are made to the routine to keep things new and interesting. The location on W 68th is very convenient for me and I've never been to the studio at MMAC on W 60th. The Nalini Method must be catching on around the city, because classes have become more full since I first started taking them. read more

I just came back from a workout here and yep, intense as advertised. Gotta say though Rupa was a great teacher and was just the right amount of motivational and helpful and makes sure to call everyone out rather than just me the newbie which was nice for a change. They don't have locker rooms here really, so if you need to change there really only is a bathroom there to change into, which is not the ideal situation. I'd rate the place higher if the $35 a class was really justified. I feel like the simple amenities of having a locker room to change in should be standard for a place that charges this much but maybe that's just me.... read more

I'm officially obsessed with Nalini. I'm terrible at motivating myself to go to the gym, so I didn't want to waste money on a membership. I'm much better about it if I have an appointment and someone to push me, but personal trainers here are wicked expensive. My Yelp search brought me to Nalini. I was hesitant to take the class because the website seemed very new age-y, but I trusted the positive reviews and went for it. This place is amazing. The studio is huge, and very clean. All the equipment is laid out for you when you get to class and everything's in great shape. There are lockers available (you have to bring your own lock) and a locker room with showers, though I've never used them. They also have a small cafe, which seems pretty well stocked. The staff are so so so friendly, and greeted me on my first day right as I walked through the door. I had my first class with Shannon. He introduced himself to me and made sure to learn my name, and didn't forget it. My second class was with Rupa, the founder, and she's an absolute sweetheart. I let them know about my leg injury and they were great about accommodating me whilst making sure I still challenged myself. The class itself is intense. I didn't really know what to expect, but it really is an all-inclusive, full body workout. I'm a big fan of their approach. They do fast paced exercises that target certain muscles in particular, but use weights, yoga blocks, and balls to help you engage the rest of your body. They make sure to stretch you out frequently and they also do excellent barre work. All three Nalini Method classes I've been to have been similar, but the exercises somewhat varied, and if you ask the instructors to focus on a certain body part, they'll totally do it. I also took the stretch class on Saturday morning and it was fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone recovering from a muscular sports injury, like myself. Depending on what time you go, a class may be practically empty or completely full, but the instructors are constantly moving around and making sure to observe each person, correcting form when necessary or calling out a "nice work" to someone by name. I'd been feeling lazy and really wanted to jump-start my fitness routine, and this has definitely been worth it. After four classes I already feel stronger. Some people might consider it pricey, but $35/hour in NYC for an awesome workout is totally worth it, especially when you can save on multiple classes online. Oh, and scheduling is super easy on the website. I may have gone a little overboard with my praise here, but they totally deserve it. read more

Classes are fun, diverse and, perhaps because all the switching up from stretches to high rep low-weight lifting to barre exercises, the time just flies. DAMN. I went in all like "oh I do Bikram yoga so whatever no sweat, oh I ride my bike 15 miles per day, so my legs can take some BS bodyweight work." No. Just no. 10 minutes in and it felt like someone was holding a blow torch to my quads. Another 10 minutes I was shaking like a leaf. Then I'm dripping sweat all over the floor in a plank while squeezing my eyes shut and half-heartedly praying. Then I limp over to the bars and my abs are worked until they are literally failing me. Then, it's over. Everyone breathes a sigh and collapses. And all I can say is I want to go BACK! It was such a great workout and as others have said, the instructor, Rupa, is fantastic. She encourages, pushes, corrects and motivates everyone in the room. It's a little pricey, but it definitely won't disappoint as a workout. For me, if I'm going to drop this kind of money for an exercise class it's going to be here over anywhere else. read more

Better than other barre classes - you really feel it where you're supposed to feel it, and the props help. Every barre class claims to be form-focused but this one really is. Removed a star because they don't really have their own studio - MMAC is kind of a mess. They deserve as nice a studio as Pop Physique, since they give you a better workout. Nalini Method is an excellent workout for barre fans looking for a more intensity. A few points: - Rupa is a fantastic instructor. She's all about the students and is constantly giving corrections, modifications and challenges. She's the best barre instructor in the city, hands down. - Workout has a little more intensity than other barre classes, which I love. Every section is very, very challenging and if you're starting to get used to it, Rupa will give a modification to make it more challenging for you. The hour will completely fly by! - Studio itself is good and set up prior to the start of class. I personally really appreciate when all the equipment is set up ahead of class so that there isn't awkward crowding. - That said, the facilities on 68th st aren't great, especially compared to peers. There's a shower and locker room, but its not like the beautiful spaces at Bar Method or Physique 57 that you might be used to. You'll need to bring all your own toiletries! Four stars for being the absolute best barre class in the city, taking one away for the meh facilities. read more

I cannot recommend Nalini method enough. I've tried pretty much every barre studio in NYC (Exhale, Fly, Pop, Figure 4, Physique 57, BDC, and the list goes on) and Rupa is by far and away the best out there. The class is super hard, but she incorporates a lot of moves and techniques that I've never seen in any other barre class which I've found to be much more interesting. I feel confident that I've gotten a complete full body workout every single time. Her energy in class is infectious - she is equal parts encouraging and demanding, which is the perfect fuel to keep you going during the killer wall sits and arm section (I can hear her saying LOW MEDIUM LOW HIGH in my head as I type this...). I'm a barre fanatic (physique, FlyBarre, Exhale- I've tried them all). Rupa is without a doubt the best instructor I've ever had! She is attentive, full of energy and will have you wobbling out of the class (in a good way!). I usual feel like a klutz when I try a new workout class. But I felt like I was actually able to keep up in this class. They worked out every part of me and then next morning, I really really felt it. In some similar classes, I felt like they tend to work out mostly the legs (barre ones downtown and midtown) which I don't really need since I feel my calves are huge enough as it is. Love it here but wishing they had more classes that worked with my schedule. Or at least a dvd or something where I could suppliment on days I can't make it. read more

My favorite workout so far! I have been coming here regularly for the past two months and I am seeing great results! Each class is somehow different they are always challenging! All of the instructors are great and even if you are taking a class with 15 other people, you feel as if you are taking a private class because of the attention you receive from the instructors. I spent a month trying out lots of different studios around New York and this was my favorite. After each class I had the pleasant "just worked out" feeling in every muscle of my body. Some classes overdo one muscle group or you leave not feeling any changes but Nalini works you hard and all over. I took a few classes. It was ok. Then I took Physique 57 and realized that Rupa's class is just not worth it. For pretty much the same money at Physique, I don't have to wipe mats down with clorox after and they are way more established. I went for my first class and loved it. I've tried a lot of different workouts and found this one to be fun and challenging. The instructor, Meghan, gave a lot of one-on-one attention and was able to motivate me throughout the entire very hard class, but never yelled (which I hate, I don't like boot camp like classes where screaming = motivation). All of the moves are ones that you can do, but the way they are combined and the number of repetitions, make the class very tough. I also like how stretching is incorporated throughout the class, and not just done at the end. read more

Didn't love the venue/space, but class was really tough workout

First I'd like to say that I have had my share of exercise. I have run 75 mile weeks, I have done a year of continuous days, but after my last collegiate race began to explore life beyond running. Since then, I feel like I have pretty much tried it all: Pilates (yeah reformer!); hot yoga, spiritual yoga, flow...even put up the cash for six months with a personal trainer. But nothing, NOTHING, has compared to Nalini Method. All 4'9" of the instructor, Rupa Mehta, is pure energy and motivation. I've never paid for a private with her, but I've never felt like I had to. She gives so much attention to everyone in the class, and recognizes my progress (or when I'm being lazy). After two months of two to three times per week - I feel great, and look pretty good too :) Don't get me wrong, it's hard. It'll burn muscles you didn't know you had, and you'll definitely (definitely) shake, but the results--tight legs and butt and...definition?! (yes, definition), are well worth it. The class is amazing, it's the best of all the barre classes when Rupa is teaching. Unfortunately, for the price, their schedule is very limited. There are no early morning or late evening classes (i.e. 5am or 8pm) and they only offer two classes on the weekend, both before 11am. I bought a package for 2 Nalini Method classes + "Connect to your One" book through a deal on RueLaLa, and took my first class this morning with Rupa. Wow. It was by far the most intense workout I've had in a very long time. Though the studio is very far west, I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful setting. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by Shannon, and everyone remembered my name. It was one of the most welcoming experiences I've had in a while. The studio itself seemed brand new, is very clean, and everything was set up for us prior to class. My class was very small - just 3 of us. It was like having our own small group personal training session. Rupa is energetic and fantastic, always smiling. You feel good and protected in her hands. She constantly corrected form and pushed us. I didn't expect the workout I got... I could barely walk out of there! I can't wait to go back! I 100% recommend the Nalini Method without reservation to anyone, particularly individuals who need motivation and to feel a real emotional support. Without a doubt a workout is mental as well as physical. Rupa successfully makes you believe you can do it. read more

I've tried every type of class in my quest to find the ultimate NYC workout which will make me look strong, lean, and tone that doesn't involve throwing a tractor tire around a gym. My search ended when I found Nalini Method. Rupa is the best teacher I have ever come across. Her class is challenging every time, fast-paced, and creative (she switches it up so that I am never bored). When I came in with a knee injury thinking that I would hide in the back and hope for the best, she modified my work out on the fly while not missing a beat with the other students. In addition to Nalini, I also do a cycle class for cardio; the combo will give you a strong, lean body and amazing confidence. If you get bored easily and need a high energy class with great music, this is the class for you. read more

Rupa Mehta is what makes this class extraordinary. Many of the exercises are similar to those in other barre classes, but Rupa is obsessed with form, personal attention, and making sure your time is used as well as possible. She has a gift for explaining how to do a particular exercise, what to imagine to help you get in the right form, and what something should feel like. She corrects everyone as needed, and encourages everyone - newbies as well as class regulars. The class is super challenging but people of all abilities and ages are there and get a lot out of it. It call comes down to Rupa and how talented she is at leading a class. Rupa could teach anything, and i would love it. read more

I am going to jump on the bandwagon here because I really love Nalini Method. Back when it relocated to the new space in May I visited a few times and really liked it. But it's pricey enough that I wanted to see if I could find comparable workouts for less. I tried Pure Yoga's Figure 4 (which they claim is better than Nalini, but I disagree), I tried Equinox's Barre Burn and neither could compare. I haven't tried FlyBarre yet, but that is next on my list... The only thing I really felt gave me a comparably good workout is working with a personal trainer or in a private pilates session. And when you look at it that way, it's not really all that pricey. Classes are fairly small and you get a good amount of personal attention. Like the previous review said, the teachers focus on form and try to make sure that you get the best workout for your money. If it weren't for the fact that I want to keep my Equinox membership so I can go to spinning and pilates and work out on my own, I would have joined Nalini a long time ago. SERIOUSLY ADDICTIVE! The Nalini Method will really give you a total body workout in a way you probably aren't used to getting. I never write reviews, for after taking Nalini classes for over one year (and even following Rupa and her team when they left Pure Yoga), this technique is seriously legit. I used to be a cardio junkie, and now, if I have to choose between a spin class or a Nalini class, I choose the Nalini class every time. This is a seriously effective workout and you WILL see changes if you stick with it. I used to think my body was never going to change, but because each class is different and because the creative variations in movement are constant, I never plateaued. It's STILL hard (if I'm in the correct form). it's nice to feel your body change. Also, this year the studio is offering a year membership, but you can pay a fee of 250.00 monthly and go to UNLIMITED CLASSES - Cardio, stretch, yogalini, and straight up Nalini. I wasn't able to pay for the year in full (living in NYC seems to accrue many expenses), but having the monthly autopay commitment of 250.00 for the entire year is really an incredible alternative and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CHANGE THEIR BODY. I'm serious - I never thought I'd be able to see the muscles in my abs, but since doing Nalini I have a newfound sense of confidence. I get antsy if I am unable to do it for several days in a row...my body craves it. The instructors are amazing and there is a genuine approach to the Nalini philosophy that I think you will find very unique. I've met so many wonderful people through Nalini - lifelong friends - and I am not the girl who usually meets people through workouts. If you do one thing for yourself this year, join Nalini.
