I am a huge fan of Desire's cardio jump board class on Wednesday nights, but I can't always make it, so yesterday, Saturday, I took a 1pm TRX class with Iveta. I had taken the TRX class at moving strength east with Dawn, and it was a great hard class, but moving strength West seems to have a more conducive schedule to my lifestyle. It was a small class of three people and Iveta was very welcoming and asked if we had injuries, which I always like, especially since I have many. She was aware of these throughout the class and as I modified or she suggested modifications we just kept on moving. The class went surprisingly fast considering it was an hour of TRX - that is not always the case. But we moved fast, we mixed it up, from Rows, Low medium and high, to push ups, to mountain climbers to planks to more rows to squats upon squats upon squats. Iveta also had probably the best music mix I have heard in months for any class I've taken it was modern upbeat and loud - maybe that was part of the reason it went fast. Lately I've been taking classes that are silent with no music, and I'm not sure I enjoy it as much. This might've not been the best choice for me, after walking 3 miles over the Queensboro Bridge and having a swollen foot, LOL, but I made it through and I made it through strong. There's some thing about classes that makes me competitive and push through the pain :-). Highly recommend.

Pilates Reformer was certainly much harder than I expected and probably the most mindful class I've taken in terms of muscle control, flexibility and form (and I've taken barre too) UNFORTUNATELY, my foot decided to cramp 3/4 the way in, so I couldn't finish the rest of the class....lol I was so embarrassed but apparently it's a common problem. sigh Anyways, the bathroom is outside in the hallway, accessed by a key and there's no water station here but they sell bottles for $1.

It's in a walk up building like on the 5th floor so just getting there is a workout! The people there are very accomodating with scheduling which was very nice. The classes are 45 minutes and limited to five people. I felt like the 45 minutes wasn't enough since the teachers were racing through to make sure we worked out our core, arms and legs. If I didn't get a deal, the classes are pretty expensive - $40 each, especially for only 45 minutes. Also one of the instructors used to teach downtown at another studio which was much cheaper - like 25 per class which was an hour and an apparatus class. I think the $40 price tag is too high for this place, especially compared to alot of other pilates studios in NYC.

When I had my first session, I didn't really even know what my "core" was, and certainly didn't know how to use it. For each new exercise, I kept saying "I don't think I actually have the muscle you're talking about," and she would show me how to find it, engage it, and strengthen it. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the studio is lovely. New equipment, great views, and very serene environment.

They were some of the hardest classes I've ever taken and I left both inspired and a little defeated. I would only recommend a very hydrated and somewhat experienced person exercise here, it's not for the super newbies unless you take a teacher or class title that really helps beginners. That's my most honest advice because honestly, classes are intense here. The teachers and desk staff are friendly and the facilities were spotless. I feel like I have tried a pretty wide range of classes and teachers (my app says 170, but I have def passed 200), Stephanie, Aura, Marisa, Katie, Sarah, Eric, Auraceli, Tori, and Alexa. My body has personally seen the biggest change since taking Sculpt/Pilates classes consistently. The instructors always brings a fun, positive, welcoming energy. I feel like I get the most out of the class, with how hard I am working, not wasting time, and using the end to fully rest-which rarely happens in the city. I always leave feeling accomplished and well challenged, which I so love. Anyways who knows me, know's how much I love Bode and rave about it. Thanks for creating such an amazing studio space. With her, I learned how to properly breathe, stand, and move my body for the first time. I've since "graduated" from PT but continue to think of her cues whenever I exercise or in my work as a bedside nurse. At 25 years old, I've dealt with chronic pain for at least the last 5 years, and I was lucky to find a provider who listened to me without judgement and gave me tools to manage my pain. I cancelled the rest of my sessions and asked for a refund. Ahmed gave me a refund BUT he insisted on charging me for the session that put me in Lenox Hill Hospital! He's a man of no honor.

It's evident how much everyone cares about both the yoga practice and the entire experience. Plus the recent renovations have made the space even better. It's light, bright, and offers a great view of the Upper East Side out the windows. Another pro of this studio is that it's open to practitioners of all levels. New York Yoga offers various types of yoga, including yin, slow flow, all levels vinyasa, power flow vinyasa, and advanced power flow vinyasa. There's really something for everyone. Also, the heat! It feels fantastic. This is exactly where you want to be in the cooler weather and it actually helps you acclimate to the warmer weather in the summer months. This hot yoga studio is conveniently located by the 86th subway station , right off the 4/5/6 and super close to the Q train on 86th as well. Overall, the teachers, staff, and students are exceptional here. New York Yoga is a very special place and I feel so lucky to be a part of it!

This review is for POC only…read more As I walk down memory lane of revisiting one of my favorite studios in NYC, I land at New York Yoga. Remembering the day Dana Miller aligned me forever with my Triangle Pose (Trikonasana) many years ago (I still practice her method today) and being excited to see an NYC all-time favorite, Victor Cotto, on the schedule, I decided to revisit my past for a quick refresh. However, my visit was initially denied due to perceived racism and bias. Can a Black girl/yoga teacher no longer do yoga at New York Yoga? I buzzed twice with no response as I watched previous European Americans easily enter with ease. Shocked, confused, and feeling deliberately rejected, I had to call to make sure there was a class, during which I felt like I had to ask permission to enter though a reservation had already been made. It was obvious. It is a rarity to experience blatant racism in your face in New York City, but a yoga studio? This is maybe my first. Anger then tears prior to class. But, in short, the class was graceful. This studio is wonderful for any white members in the community. For any Black yogis, please call the studio upon arrival so they can see you in the camera and mention or ask to take a class. If not, Victor is one of the best teachers in the city. Please head down to SUI Yoga in Soho to experience the charm of his flow. Moreover, the experience was so slight, maybe minor, but heavily felt. I will continue my tour of the best yoga studios in NYC again, both new and old, and report to my POC community as the new age New York Yoga customer experience has dampened my original glow, now and forever.
