I am a huge fan of moving strength west, it is a intimate boutique Pilates/TRX/aerial yoga/reformer studio where I've taken multiple classes. I am a huge fan of Desire's cardio jump board class on Wednesday nights, but I can't always make it, so yesterday, Saturday, I took a 1pm TRX class with Iveta. I had taken the TRX class at moving strength east with Dawn, and it was a great hard class, but moving strength West seems to have a more conducive schedule to my lifestyle. It was a small class of three people and Iveta was very welcoming and asked if we had injuries, which I always like, especially since I have many. She was aware of these throughout the class and as I modified or she suggested modifications we just kept on moving. The class went surprisingly fast considering it was an hour of TRX - that is not always the case. But we moved fast, we mixed it up, from Rows, Low medium and high, to push ups, to mountain climbers to planks to more rows to squats upon squats upon squats. Iveta also had probably the best music mix I have heard in months for any class I've taken it was modern upbeat and loud - maybe that was part of the reason it went fast. Lately I've been taking classes that are silent with no music, and I'm not sure I enjoy it as much. This might've not been the best choice for me, after walking 3 miles over the Queensboro Bridge and having a swollen foot, LOL, but I made it through and I made it through strong. There's some thing about classes that makes me competitive and push through the pain :-). Highly recommend. read more

Definitely not the most glamorous studio but the attention and care here was great! I took my first Pilates Reformer class here through ClassPass and it was only me and two other girls, so it was very intimate and focused, which I really appreciated as a first-timer. Pilates Reformer was certainly much harder than I expected and probably the most mindful class I've taken in terms of muscle control, flexibility and form (and I've taken barre too) UNFORTUNATELY, my foot decided to cramp 3/4 the way in, so I couldn't finish the rest of the class....lol I was so embarrassed but apparently it's a common problem. sigh Anyways, the bathroom is outside in the hallway, accessed by a key and there's no water station here but they sell bottles for $1. read more

Loved my TRX/Reformer Pilates class with Rachel! My abs are actually sore today and it's not easy to get them sore, that's one good workout! I have very sporadic work schedule and can't commit to any scheduled workout so I decided to check out this studio via fitreserve. I am always apprehensive when trying a new class or studio and I am so happy I did. Rachel was phenomenal, perfect combination of humor and support. I hate it when instructors get obnoxious and start getting on your case for not trying harder and Rachel was the opposite of that, very supportive. It was only me and another lady. The studio was clean and most importantly very well cooled down. All in all, I highly recommend this class and location and I will definitely come again when I have time. read more

Lovely small studio. Classes of 4 are perfect in this post-Covid world. I've tried to take classes in 2 of the studios with different teachers in order to find my niche. What has most surprised me is the range of teaching/range in difficulty of class: from very easy, slightly boring, no real coaching to a fast-paced and very challenging class. UES teachers seem to be better than UWS, although the UWS studio is nicer. There doesn't seem to be a standard so I took a couple of stars off due to the wide range I have experienced. It's too random for the price of the classes. Would be nice to be able to count on a consistent workout. read more

I love the apparatus classes here. Each instructor has a different flavor. The studio is not glamorous but is a very comfortable and unintimidating place to get started no matter what level you are at. Make sure to bring socks, preferably sticky socks! Class sizes are small (no more than 6 students) and offer individualized attention. read more

I took a Tower/Reformer class here this past weekend and enjoyed it very much even on a Sunday morning. The studio is quite small but feels spacious due to the setup of the machines & class size. My class only had myself and one other student, which was very much appreciated especially since I was unfamiliar with the machines. The workout itself was pretty good. There is a lot of isolation of muscles and ab work, and while at the time it was not as intense as I would have liked, I definitely felt the soreness the next day. I really liked using the tower especially because it's not one that I see in as frequently in other studios. Love the personal aspect to this studio - will be back to try the TRX classes! read more

This is my favorite place for my Pilates fix. I'd never used the Reformer, jump board or Chair before but thanks to my MoveUSA membership, I was able to try out the classes here and they are AMAZING! I've had classes with the owner, Patricia, Carole, Rob and a few more, I think - but these 3 are my favorites. (Completely random observation but Patricia reminds me sooo much of Kristin Chenoweth!) They're knowledgable, attentive and enjoy what they do. What more could you ask for? read more

I was so, so surprised with Moving Strength. When I entered the studio, I was a little taken aback by the size. There's not really a waiting area, and the instructor has to buzz you in, intercom-style while they are teaching the class. There's not a separate receptionist, so it's a tad awkward to stand there waiting awkwardly while the current class finishes up their session. Having said all that, I loved my workout here! I took the circuit class with Arrie and I loved being able to do reformer, tower and chair all in one session. I had never done chair before, so I was very challenged with this workout and really enjoyed learning something new. Arrie isn't your typical Pilates teacher, but she knows her stuff and is also funny and unpretentious to boot. Arrie played Pet Shop Boys and Tears for Fears and I loved listening to cool music during the workout, much better than the Top 40 fare I get at my regular Barre studio. I've taken Pilates classes at studios all around the city and loved how unexpectedly challenging this was. I'm taking a star off because while I attended this class through ClassPass, it costs the same amount per-class as the more upscale boutique studios but lacks the amenities. The bathroom is across the hall (shared office style requiring a separate key) and there's not a water cooler or other amenities you would expect to get for $35 per class. If you are on ClassPass I definitely recommend this studio! read more

I've been going to Moving Strength for months now, and loving every moment of it! I've mostly taken the reformer classes so majority of this review will be geared towards those classes. I've taken classes with Carole, Anna, and Louie. Anna and Louie gave me a marvelous basis for my Pilates practice. For the most part, I am a die-hard Carole fan. She is insanely knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated to correct form. Her classes are challenging and the level of difficulty is tailored to the clients of the class. Her classes are absolutely my favorite reformer classes! I recently took a TRX class with her and almost puked. She had to cut it short for me (I was the only one) and still made me feel like a superstar. The instructors I have had the pleasure of meeting at Moving Strength thus far have been amazing! The space is small and no-frills. The equipment is moved around to accommodate each particular class. But..who cares?! Cozy is King! The location is convenient (multiple train options, buses, crosstown buses to UES). There is a small closet-like bathroom across the hall which is fairly clean. The studio itself is impeccably clean too! I absolutely love this place..so much so that I wish I was rich and jobless so that I can take their classes all day, every day!!! read more

I took a Zumba class here today and was honesty surprised at how small the studio was. It's just one room. The space is really suited more for Pilates and strength classes than Zumba but I didn't have an issue with space. I had my own private class! My instructor was great, she kept me on my toes and had great energy. I will definitely be returning here, for more Zumba and to try out their Pilates! read more

Very solid studio. It is very small and basic. There are no amenities. Come for a good work out. I did a trx boot camp and there were only 2 in the class. The instructor was so great that he was able to pinpoint every thing I did slightly incorrectly and also knew when to tell me to lessen or increase the intensity. Furthermore, this is the only trx class I've taken where I was on the trx system the entire time. Usually, it's a mix of floor and weight exercises along with trx. I was very satisfied with my workout and overall, I say give it a try. I like how small the classes are. I saw they only had a few of each equipment so they wouldn't take that many per class. I definitely recommend this studio. I did my first-ever session of Pilates here and then just kept coming back for more! The teachers are friendly and keep a close eye on you so you won't hurt yourself. The small size of the studio is a huge plus because you get that personalized attention and any modifications you may need due to injuries! I also did TRX as well as aerial classes here and would recommend those, as again, the small size of the class means minimal risk of hyperextending, and maximum opportunity to learn and master the proper form! This place put me through some very solid workouts and has a really good client interface as well, so it just is generally an enjoyable experience. I recently attended a cardio pilates class here and the workout I got was nothing short of absolutely AMAZING. Every muscle in my body was worked without it being too much, and my heart rate went up without too much intensity. I ended up being the only person who showed up (probably because of the snow storm), but Desira was incredible and offered the class anyways. She let me choose exactly what I wanted to work on, and really worked me. She also helped me stretch after every move, which I really needed. I have been taking Pilates and TRX classes for months. They have been wonderful but I didn't know how great they were until I had three unexpected surgeries in three months. I've taken classes with Joanna (barre), Carole (reformer), and Jose (reformer) and every class was great. Their reformers are very good (I've experienced some old and not so good reformers in my day). They don't have a barre (on the West side, I don't know about east), which made me a little apprehensive about taking a barre class there. However, Joanna was able to instruct us to doing the same style workout as on the barre on the floor- and it was great! I really felt the muscle exhaustion and definitely got a good workout! I'm hesitant to write this review for two reasons. First, I've only been to one class--the TRX bootcamp--at this studio, so my experience is limited. The second reason is more selfish: I'd like to keep this place a bit of a secret (which it appears to be based on other reviews), especially because I got in through ClassPass. But first impressions count for something and I strongly believe that great work ought to be rewarded, so here I am. TRX is a suspension training equipment, essentially a long rope with handles on both sides that hangs down from a high bar. The exercises are hard to describe. During the first part of the class, we mostly held the ropes by the handles and did various push and pull exercises. We then moved on to various positions where our feet were in the handles and we did several mat exercises, including some (for me) killer ones in plan position. While it's pretty tough, there's a playful element to it as well, which for me made it a fun experience. The instructor, Patricia, was excellent. Calm, perky but not in an annoying way, great at showing and explaining the exercises, and quick to help us make adjustments when needed. The class had a nice flow. If you have any interest in pilates-type exercises, give this place a try. It's exactly the kind of small business that makes this city such a wonderful place to live in. read more

I love moving strength! The teachers here are wonderful and keep the class exciting. They are very knowledgeable and educated especially about injuries. I have some knee issues and the teachers here always help me modify the exercises based on my comfort and needs. Since starting pilates my knees have actually improved and I have very little pain. I have been coming here for almost a year now and I love it and will continue to come. I high recommend this studio if you are looking for a great pilates class. read more

I really like the times of their classes. I use ClassPass and tend to go at off-peak times and find they have good times for my schedule. I think the instructors could be a bit more inspiring and the studio sleeker but at ClassPass prices, it's a good deal. I love trying new fitness activities and had a lot of fun doing aerial fitness strength training with Lea. She was very patient with my lack of upper body strength and I always felt safe. When you're tangled in the "silks", you're not that high off the ground anyway! I definitely felt the core muscles burning over the weekend. Very effective and lots of fun! read more

Took a class here with the owner Patricia a couple of weeks ago (the Cardio Pilates class) and I was so impressed with her that I was sold within the first 10 minutes of the class. To start with, she is the only instructor (I have been to tons of gyms, studios, etc around the city) who has been able to tell me what my injury is based on my physical limitations (I have a labral tear, as well as a variety of "itis-es") due to her background in PT. The studio is indeed small so you can be sure to get individual attention, and Patricia is more than willing to answer technical questions and she's very knowledgeable. I could go on gushing for a while... The class was definitely challenging and I worked up a sweat and an endorphin rush. Due to my injuries my cardio has definitely suffered and I haven't felt that runner's high in a while. I'm so pleased I found this studio and will definitely continue to attend (have since been going once a week). There isn't really a place to change (except the very clean single-person bathroom) so it's best to come geared up if possible. The machines and equipment are in good shape, and honestly any issues regarding the size of the space don't even matter in light of the quality of the instruction and the workout. read more

The new Pilates Power Plate class is fun and challenging. I've been taking Pilates and TRX classes at West 79th St. for a couple years. Most of the teachers are very good and give you lots of personal attention to improve your form. The Plate class, taught by Patricia, really makes you concentrate on strengthening the core and stretching other muscles. Highly recommended! read more
