This place just isn't my thing, but I can see why it appeals to a certain audience. It will make you sweat a little (not like bootcamp or anything) and you will tone and sculpt, but the exercises are definitely more dance-oriented than workout-oriented. The music is also upbeat teeny-bopper dance jams. When you are doing the cardio portion, I guess you're suppose to gyrate your hips the entire time instead of trying to keep your core strong and in tact. Couldn't really get used to that in one class. The instructor was a young, energetic girl that sounded like she was 15 years old -- like a very bouncy cheerleader. Kinda cute but again, not my thing. She also doesn't really call out what she is doing like in a workout class but more so expects you to just watch and follow, so you don't really have cues on what is happening next. The mat work was actually pretty hard -- lots of small, centralized, repetitive movements. Basically, this place is a middle aged "manly" dad's version of hell on earth. On the last day of my NY trip I was feeling bogged down by all the food, booze and lack of sleep my body was trudging through on account of me telling it it had no choice but to suck it up, so I decided it was time to literally suck it up; especially since I would be sedentary on a plane for most of the rest of the day. Found Body Conceptions through ClassPass and the time of the class and location were the most convenient of my options, not to mention, the Yelp reviews were glowing. I showed up a little before class (as is customary when you're a new student at most places), but no waiver or the like was needed. I introduced myself to Erin, the lovely instructor, and she had two questions for me: Q: Do you have any injuries? A: Nope Q: Do you like to dance? A: Sure do The class was dictated by the music, every song change resulted in a new set of movements. There was some dancing, but I wouldn't call it a dance class. It's more like a jazzercise workout with modern music and authentic energy. Since it was my first time, I spent most of my time watching/following Erin and not necessarily giving the movements my all, but I can see if you went regularly how the workout would be more intense because you'd know what to expect. All parts of the body were tended to, with the ab portion on the sliding discs (for your feet) being especially brutal. Erin called out everyone in the class during the hour multiple times with accolades and encouragement, which I very much appreciate! If you like intense workouts where you walk out sweating, wanting to throw up/gorge on protein right after, and/or can't move the next day, this may not do it for you. But if you want your workout to be fun, a little whimsical but tough, and dance-oriented, you'll have a blast. Bring water and a towel! read more

I absolutely LOVE Body Conceptions by Mahri! These classes are welcoming to everyone, give a fantastic/ challenging workout and are super uplifting! I feel strong and beautiful during AND after class (even with all of that sweat!). The instructors are smart, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and extremely kind! There is such a warm community of women who are ready to welcome newcomers and veterans like myself! I would recommend these classes to anyone! I've taken both the cardio and the toning class, and have remained a consistent fan over the past few years! I'm a diehard HIIT / intense cardio exerciser, but like to mix it up with BoCo. The toning class in particular is focused on resistance / body weight, and targets muscles that just don't get worked even in a high intensity class like Barry's Bootcamp. The instructors are all great, approachable and call you by name. The studio can get a little cramped sometimes during popular times. read more

BoCo Classic is a great class!! Switching between cardio and toning helps time go by fast and gives you a total body workout. Easy to follow along and great for all levels. The instructor, Sarah clearly demonstrated the exercises. She was very friendly and positive, taking extra time to make everyone feel comfortable and part of the group. read more

I'm a huge dance fitness fan and can't stand toning classes. (Like I would give you a lung before I would give you a lateral arm raise.) I figured that since I do classes like 305 Fitness on the regular that I would have no problem with the Boco Blast 45 class. I. Was. Wrong. Nicole's class kicked my butt. She literally has you jumping non-stop for the entire time. Your only respite is the toning section for one or two songs in the middle of class. (I did end up taking it also with another instructor and it was a bit easier, but not much.) There are a lot of dance cardio options in the city and I honestly wouldn't say this one stood out for me any more than others I've taken. It's a pretty standard New York boutique fitness dance cardio class. But that can be a good thing if you live for like AKT in Motion or DanceBody and are looking to change it up a bit. read more

I just got home from my second class...and wow what a workout! I have now taken with Erin and Mahri and both classes were excellent. I love that the class has every component that I'm looking for and it's a great mix of cardio and toning. My abs and thighs are still burning! This is just the class I need to get back in shape! I am a yoga addict and rarely take any other type of class but I have to say, I am a convert after taking class with Erin! She had such fun, motivating energy, the music was great and I got an AWESOME workout. I feel like it worked my entire body and the next day I was sore in all the right places. It was the perfect mix of dance cardio, strength training, and stretching. I also really enjoyed meeting the other women at the class. They were all friendly and we had fun sweating together. Class was held in a bustling pocket of the NYC (easily accessible via subway/bus) inside a charming dance studio with great music and lighting. After an intense warm-up, we progressed with a content-rich series of leg exercises utilizing a small glider under our feet that had me screaming for an Epsom Salt bath. Many great leg exercises were programmed into this class. The hot spots like inner and outer thighs, hamstrings, calves and quads were worked to exhaustion...and absolutely no muscle left behind. The arm section was taught with 2 lb weights aimed at carving our shoulders, biceps, triceps, forearms and everything in between. Lauren added many repetitive exercises to this section that left me feeling like I had just carried a load of heavy groceries up 20 flights of stairs. However, I noticed everyone smiling and engaged throughout the entire class because there were so many unique and wonderful exercises that not a single person appeared bored! This class is consistently taught with varying exercises so the group will never get tired of the same class and our muscles are challenged. We stretched after all major muscle groups and moved at a steady pace with all exercises cued to Lauren's fabulous music playlist. One great highlight was the glute section, an area gaining a lot of attention these days in the media. Well, this is how a toned derriere is achieved...Lauren's program delivered the best glute tightening and toning exercises that will certainly provide you with newfound "assets." Intense ab exercises using gliders and a squishy ball were injected at the halfway mark of class. Water breaks ensued after each rigorous section and so many sequences were expertly taught throughout the tough hour. We were made to feel like superstars getting my beach body training. Several minutes of the program's signature arm moves concluded class before a delicious one song cool-down stretch. Don't let these months slip by...book yourself with Lauren and the rest of the lovely Body Conceptions team. They are experts at toning physiques. Please allow me to preface this review by saying I am NOT a gym bunny. I am much more of a novel exerciser. I always need be doing something new or I get bored. Body Conceptions will never make you bored! The first class I took was with Joanie and I was surprised by how much I really liked it! It was fun, inspiring, and a really great workout. I have since taken numerous classes with my favorite instructor, Erin. She has such wonderful energy. She keeps you going in the best way possible. It is very evident throughout the class that she is passionate about movement and body wellbeing. As a person who is not always a fan of exercise, I find it difficult not to get caught up in wanting to improve myself physically. Most of all, it's just a downright good time! I especially love the freestyle time at the end! I'm sure I look like a massive idiot, but no one is there to judge. Just have fun! read more

As a classpass user I have been trying all different types of exercises all over the city and body conceptions is by far my favorite. I was a workout-class-skeptic, preferring to do my own thing at the gym, but Ashley (previous instructor) and Brittany's (current instructor) 7am power class has converted me. Every week it's a challenging, toning class and I leave exhausted and invigorated. It's great for cardio, coordination, and overall toning. Even for those with no dance experience, it's easy enough to follow along. The class is consistent enough week to week, but each week there are also great new challenges. read more

Took my first Body Conceptions class with Mahri 2 days ago on Friday - I am still feeling great and energized! Yesterday my abs and glutes and calves and triceps were sore in just the right "good sore" way, and I still feel great from the endorphins from all that cardio. It is hard to target those triceps just right, y'all! The polar vortex got nothin' on Mahri - she is a bundle of pure positive energy and passion, which was so uplifting on a cold, wintery day. The class was pretty much a mix of cardio sets alternated with sets of targeted glute, ab, and arm / shoulder toning work. Mahri said she changes up the workout every time (which is especially good for people like me, who like variety). I really liked the balance of the alternating format of cardio and toning / targeted exercises. I feel like alternating between cardio and toning, as opposed to other formats, kept my body and muscles warm and allowed me to get the most effective toning work without letting my muscles get cold. I think that movement and blood flow from the cardio actually let me do the strengthening work more effectively and be less sore the next day! It was a really killer workout and we all know that a really workout like this can make us sleep much more efficiently and give us more energy all week as well - I know it did for me. This class is really a steal for the value. I've taken a lot of different kinds of fitness / cardio / barre classes at gyms and studios around the city, and I think this is a really excellent value compared to the other classes available in NYC. read more

I LOVE these classes! Each one is different in some way, but gets you the results you need. Cardio, sculpting, stretching, arms, legs, butt, EVERYTHING is being worked in an hour. Mahri, who I have been taking most of the classes with, is just phenomenal. The energy she has every time is contagious, and there is never one bad song on her playlists ! (very important if you are not a workout junkie, and you need to have something that makes you get trough class). Either in group or private, this is one class you have to try if you want something different, fun, energetic, with great results, and amazing music and instructors! read more

I am completely uncoordinated and tend to work out sporadically (read every few months), so I was a little nervous going in as I've never done a cardio/dance type class (it's always been a fear of mine). But I unexpectedly had SUCH a blast and I know if I could survive it, anyone can! Mahri and Lauren have such a positive energy -they make their class so un-intimidating and friendly and you really don't have to worry about a thing. The class is split between faster movements and more targeted mat exercises to provide an intense overall workout on parts of the body that definitely don't get targeted from just running or elliptical (my usual routine) - I definitely felt the toning effects after just one class. I've tried every cardio dance and tracy-anderson-inspired protocol out there and I always come back to Body Conceptions. Mahri has developed a class that is fun, unique, challenging and rewarding. The music is amazing - nothing keeps me moving like a good play list - and they don't over complicate the choreography so you get a great dance cardio workout. The body work is definitely challenging but it's doable, especially if you keep going to the classes and work up to it. Every muscle group gets a workout and by the end of the class you will be dripping with sweat, but you will love every minute of it. I hope Mahri is able to get some weekend classes and more evening classes going so that I can get a couple Body Conceptions in each week. read more

The BoCo Classic class is the perfect mix of dance cardio--but choreography you can actually follow--and toning with focus on each body part, almost like a cardio dance party meets barre class, but better!! I was a college athlete and this class is the funnest, most challenging, high energy class I have taken in the city. They call it dance cardio but you do not need dancing skills by any means. There is some choreography but anyone can do it, even first-timers! I have tried all the other "dance cardio" classes in the city and this was hands down the most welcoming and empowering of them all. The regular class starts with 15-20 min of fast-paced dancing, movement really, some jumping, but all with some sass (hello Beyoncé). Then you typically go into "seat" work where the instructor takes you through moves targeting your tush. I was so surprised, the first time I took the class, by how weak my hips were. You know that area that turns to saddlebags once 30-ish hits? All the moves target my problem areas (and I'm sure others can relate) and create long lean muscles, which was welcomed with open arms after all the heaving lifting and bulking up I went through in college. Then you move on to the "core" section which could be anything from variations of planks, sliders, crunches to the beat and so on. The class ends with the lights down low - complete no judgement zone the entire class - doing standing ab work that feels like sassy dancing. I always leave feeling exhausted and uplifted. Every instructor has their own flavor and they all have dance backgrounds. Highly recommend! read more

Body conception classes achieve the important goals of superior fitness classes while managing to avoid the pitfalls we've all experienced. They vary just enough each time to be both different and familiar, are large and small group muscle detail oriented, efficient and challenging yet fun somehow. This is mostly because both Mahri and every instructor in her team of current and retired professional dancers are excellent and know how to set an inclusive tone for newbies and regulars alike. In a city full of type A fitness maniacs opening studios, sporting serious superiority complexes while drooling on any celebrity clientele, Mahri and her team are a breath of fresh air. Likewise, at Body Conceptions I don't feel like a piece of meat in an impersonal exercise factory just moving as many bodies as possible through the doors each day and definitely not giving a shit about little ol me lol. In addition, there are cool cross promotions, events and fitness challenges happening all the time offering outside of class opportunities to get to know people in class and have some fun. read more
