Updating my review because it's been over two years and Ananya is still my gal. I'm extremely picky and having perfectly manicured nails is literally my trademark. I do not play about my nails, and she has never missed once. The shape, the detail, the consistency... always flawless. I've been going to her for years and won't let anyone else touch my hands. I was recommended by a friend to go to Nail Box to get my nails done for my wedding! There was availability for Ananya in the morning! There's street parking right outside and some residential (if you're lucky). I was greeted by her cute pup! The session took an hour! So quick. I showed Ananya the design I wanted and with a quick glance she memorized what I wanted. I asked for no glitter though. Granted it was a simple design, it's impressive! I'm 3 weeks in of having these gel nails (only one finger is acrylic because it cracked), and no peeling of the gel coming off! I'm super impressed! The reason for -1 is because the UV process did sting my cuticles (I was too shy to ask to lower the strength haha) and I heard Ananya's prices are going up to $100 (previously $95 for a design which ombré is considered a design). I usually don't write reviews, but I felt the need to this time. I usually go to the San Mateo location for Cindy but she is no longer there. The only appointment available at Daly City. I forgot her name but it is an older Asian woman who did my nails, I think her name was "Mikayla". For starters, I was asked to come in 15 mins later because she waa running behind. Then I still sat and waited another 15 minutes. When it's finally my turn she begins to remove my builder gel, by drilling, but it seemed she couldnt get it all off? which she then starts to PULL off the builder with clippers! She kept bending my nails to try to separate the gel from the nail plate?? If I'm not mistaken, this is very damaging. She then proceeded to do my builder but doesn't prep my nails or anything, which the artists usually do. No apex for the builder either. When she is done she starts to buff my nails but kept burning the cuticle with the drill. In the end she charged me $95 for solid color builder, which I asked her the price is $75 why am I being charged $95 which she just said because she had to remove the builder gel, but I had gotten it at nailbox from another artist?? Overall was a terrible experience and definitely won't be going back. read more

08.07.2023 - Soft Gel - An update from my recent review. Appointment at 2:00pm. Arrived 10min earlier. Got a text that my nail technician is 20min behind. Again, in dire need of a fill, I asked to wait at the shop. 2:20 comes and passes, but can't gauge if Natalie will be done soon. 2:40 comes and I ask if she's almost done. After a "I'm almost done" response, I hear - "Hey! Are you on a time crunch?" -_- 40min into my appointment, waiting, and am I on a time crunch? Uhmm...Wow. Just, wow. And the verbiage of "hey!" very rude...Look, I'm not your friend. Finally. 2:44pm I sit down. Natalie is apologetic and tells me it's not realistic for her to finish my soft gel overlay by 3:20pm. I had another appointment at 3:30, but after consulting with her in regards to when she'll be done, she says "about an hour." She reassured me that she won't be charging me for any of my services today for the wait. "That's awfully nice of her," I thought. Anyhow, cool. I call my 3:30 appointment and changed it to 4pm. That gave her an hour and 5-7minutes to take me. I don't know if she's not experienced or she's distracted or she's trying to be detail orientated, I'm still waiting for my second coat at 3:47pm. Even then, she says she needs to apply a 3rd coat and reshape some of the nails, but I tell her "No, I need to be out right now." Did I mention the 2 colors I chose were not available? Natalie had to bring several colors that was "close" to what I wanted. A lot of compromises and "woosahs" that I had to make, which made me feel like this shop offers false advertisements, isn't well-organized, not professional and a hot mess. Finally get to top coat. It's 4pm. I'm late. Even though Natalie said she won't charge me, I was being nice and asked her "how much?" She doesn't charge me to remove the hard gel, but charges me full price for the soft gel: $70. When making an appointment on their website, soft gel is described as "Price varies starting at $50+ 1hr." So I figured, she charged me the most. I've been super patient with her, took her word that she'll be done in an hour and she wouldn't charge me for any of the services because it was her fault for the long wait. I walk out paying her the dues and tipped her $5. Her "thanks" was filled with so much annoyance - as if it's my fault for her horrible time management. I knew I was being generous. Wasted 2hrs 15min of my life and she made me late for my already postponed appointment, YET, I still paid her in full and a little extra. Honestly, I wanted to like this place and be a regular. So far my impression? One likes to cancel. One lies and likes to take forever. Never again. read more

Moved here a few months ago and have been desperate to find a capable nail tech. I was sad to leave my nail tech of 8 years, and was having such a hard time finding people in the San Mateo area who can do a hard gel overlay without ruining your natural nails, let alone do nail art lol. Spent four months bouncing around and my poor nails were struggling. Went from having broken nails only a handful of times in my 8 years seeing the same person, and in those four months almost all of my nails were broken. They were hanging on for dear life I decided to take one last chance after seeing some of Ananya's sets on here. She was great. Not to mention she is fast as hell lol. She did this set in a little over an hour!! Even repaired 3 nails in the process. I'm used to sitting a minimum of 2-3 hours for my nail appts. She was really sweet, and did an awesome job. It's been four weeks. No lifting. No breaks. No chipping. No cracking. And somehow they even still look super glossy. She's honestly a nail wizard! I was looking for a new nail salon since I moved. I was trying to book with their location in San Mateo, but booked Daily City by mistake. Due to the cancellation policy, I couldn't cancel online. Tried to call and left a voicemail, but no one called me back. If you decide to book with them, don't do it on your phone, you cannot see the location, do it on a laptop. My nails were 5 weeks old and I really needed to get them done so I went to my appointment three days later. The shop doesn't have a sign on it so I was originally a minute late, but couldn't find the place and had to call. It's across from the dance studio with only the number on the mailbox to see. Go through the black gates and open the door. I only was told this after I called saying I couldn't find the spot. I had booked a set by Pro for $85 with Anaya as I was willing to pay more to get a good set. The salon feels like they are still setting up. There's a sweet dog named sugar who is happy to say hi. I've never been to a salon that had a dog inside. I love dogs but not everyone does. Normally I get gel x, but Anaya said I should do the soft gel as my real nails were strong. She took off my old set and got to work on shortening my nails and putting the soft gel. She appeared knowledgeable and so I trusted the process of her working. Her next appointment showed up a little early and while I had showed up a little late, I felt that the end was rushed. She was finished in under an hour. I should have double checked each nail before leaving including the length before paying and getting out. Once I got home, I noticed that my right hand's index nail is longer than the rest and the middle is way shorter. One of my nails is lumpy and isn't even like the rest. My thumb is already breaking and I'm only a week and two days after my original appointment. I've never had that happen. While I understand everyone has bad moments or off days, there were a lot of things missed. Especially since I paid for a pro set. I shouldn't have to double check your work before leaving. I've been seeing Ananya for almost a year now and my nails always look amazing! She now has a beautiful nail salon located near Top of the Hill Mission Street. It's near the donut shop on the corner and there's plenty of parking. Right now, the windows have brown paper up + a neon sign of the salon's name, but I'm sure she'll be decorating everything soon! When I first initially saw her, I did Gel X which are gel nail extensions where you're able to grow your nails underneath. It's a better version than acrylic as there's not as much filing to the nails which can damage them long term. Since then, I've been doing hard gel on my natural nails. It's made my nails so much stronger and they last so long. I've done acrylic before and eventually they look so dull over time and they end up lifting. Ananya does an amazing job where she takes her time with her prep work and she's so detailed with her designs. In the Bay Area, it's so difficult to find a nail tech that does amazing nail art. You won't be disappointed with her!! I'd recommend texting her to schedule an appointment or DM her on IG (@sushigar_nails). Her pricing varies depending on what you want and if you want to add a design. To be transparent, my nail sets have ranged between $65-95 depending on how simple or how detailed I want it to be. Really wanted to love my nails and give Ananya the benefit of the doubt but it's disappointing... (see pictures) First, Ananya asked to reschedule my appointment couple times (I booked 3 wks in advance) just to have my appointment time back to original time. Second, I booked the ONE HOUR Set by pro with 30 min add design (which I got Gel X extensions with milky white ombré). But entire appointment was done in about 45mins. This was also a wedding nail trail and I told her when we started the appointment.. Third, (this is my fault for not thoroughly inspecting) the Gel X Extensions application on some nails are THICK with some spacing between my real nails, the glob of glue, and the extension (prone to catch dirt and bacteria in between). I loved the nail look, the ombré was beautiful, which I was so focused on, and effed up on not inspecting the actual application. Overall, I thought she did such a great job on my nail design but my fault on not inspecting on the finer and important details of the application itself which is a big disappointment for a set being done by a pro. Had my appointment for GelX. Personally she seemed really great. But my nails were a mess. I had 1 nail popped off (3 hours from the time I left) and then another nail popped off a couple hours later... and it just looked embarrassing. Paying 60 dollars for nails that didn't last for a full day or even for the weekend event that I wanted them done for. I've done gel X before and it has lasted at least 1.5-2 weeks... I got to my appt. at 12:30 and around 1:30 she had just started to apply the nails... and then her next appt. at 2 had shown up so She really rushed through to paint my my nails. The design she added 2 dots? Ended up clumping together, the under of my nails were not cleaned up so there was uneven chunks of Gel... it looks like I have boogers under my nail. I'm not very difficult to please and rarely do my nails, but it was really disappointing. I hate leaving a bad review but it was expensive and not worth it. They did offer to have me come back the next morning but I did not have any time since my event I was attending started at 11am. I didn't have time to go back to the store to get them fixed and I couldn't removed the other so I had to wear bandaids on my missing fingers... I don't have time during the weekdays either and she only work workdays so I'm stuck with missing nails for the next week or so. I came in at 10:02am today. When I walked in they had 5 technicians and 4 customers. I was asked what I wanted done. I told them I wanted Gel X and a gel pedicure. They said okay, cool. I was sat down and they started working on my nails, removing the previous gel x that I had. The technician removing it asked me multiple times if this was done here. I said "yes". She then asked me multiple times if this was gel x I said "yes". Once she removed the first layer and wrapped my fingers in acetone and aluminum I was asked to move to a chair that way another person can start working on my gel toe nails. The technician working on my hands went to work on with another client, cool. About 45 minutes later she comes back started working on the residue removal of the gel x. She asked me what shape, color, etc. I showed her a picture which I wanted on my 8 finger nails except both of my ring fingers. She said that that was marble. I told her that that was not marble,don't see the marble anywhere in the picture, BUT that on both of my ring fingers I was going to want marble with pink. She said, "whatever you want". She then tells me that it will be $5 to remove my cuticle because I had Gel X, what? At this point I'm like okay maybe they are just trying to make a buck. She tells me the total will be $85 just for my nails, but including my pedi. I said okay. Five minutes later she walks over to another technician which I am going to assume is the owner/manager. She comes back and tells me it will be $100 because I had Gel X on. I tell her okay and she proceeds to finish my cuticle. She finished working on my nails and once she is done she walks over to grab nails and glue. I was confused since that has not been my experience with Gel X. The technician then starts placing the nail on the end of my nail and I tell her. I asked for Gel X not acrylic. She tells me but this is better for your nail. My response that's not what I asked for. She then starts talking in her native language to the boss and the boss then asks me you want Gel X yea that's what I asked for. She continues to tell me that they will do hard gel that it's better for my nails and so on. I tell her that's not what we agreed on when we came in. She finally says if you want gel x you have to come on a Tuesday or Saturday.... Ummmm today is Saturday!! She then says that only her and Tina do Gel X. And I'm here thinking then why didn't you start working on my nails once you ended with the customer instead of sitting with a new after you finished with the one that you just sat down 20 minutes before this entire situation. After 1 hour and 34 minutes I was able to leave with a gel pedi, with a we are not going to charge you for cleaning your nails and feeling frustrated. When charging me the owner apologized and I expressed to her that I was not happy, and that it was unprofessional. I told her that they could have just said it in the beginning that they couldn't for whatever reason. This leaves a sour taste and really makes me wonder why couldn't she then work on my nails. Did she have an appointment that she couldn't help me? Really, what was it that they agreed to a service and couldn't fulfill the service they agreed on when I walked in. It makes me really sad because I really like Tina who has done all three of my previous nails including my previous Gel X. I have been here four times and the first time they don't even offer their stamp/card service to me. I found out about it during my second visit when a customer was offered one. And even that time I was not offered one I requested it. Please note that the lady working on my toe nails did a great job, and Tina had also done a fantastic job on my nails. The staff are exceptionally talented! I get soft gel manicure and pedicure here and the last couple of times I've made an appointment through Yelp and they are accommodating. The entire service takes about an hour and a half depending on if you have any gel to remove. My nails are usually growing out so it does take them long. Recently I was recommended to try hard gel and I liked it, the top coat color was so pretty sorry there's no photo. I promise to upload my next service. Unprofessional customer service and too many last-minute cancellations. I often don't leave reviews but I felt that I had to for this Nail Box. I agree that their artwork on nails is great and the quality is nice. I have tried hard to like Nail Box and tried to be very patient with them. However, the amount of unprofessionalism and lack of proper customer service that I've experienced with a few of the nail techs was too much to let it continue to pass. I experienced too many spontaneous cancellations the day before or day of which is frustrating because it leaves me to be finding last minute alternatives which is not easy at all and inconvenient. Not to mention my skin was cut twice by them which caused bleeding. I always schedule an appointment at least a month in advance. This appointment was with Samanatha and the date was a few days before my birthday. Literally the day before the appointment, Samantha messaged me saying that she will need to cancel with no explanation and no offer to reschedule. I understand that an explanation wasn't given since it could have been personal, but she didn't even bother to ask to reschedule or accommodate me for another convenient time for the both of us. This led me to try to find a last-minute nail appointment at another salon which was difficult to find. I understand that unexpected problems can happen, but she could have been more nice and understanding about it. A few months later, my nail appointment was scheduled with Natalie which I scheduled more than a month out. This was a few days before I would be traveling internationally. On the day that I arrived at the salon for my appointment, Natalie didn't realize she had me scheduled and that there was a mix up with the new scheduling system. She was able to reschedule me 2 days later and offered the service for free. The day before my rescheduled appointment, Natalie messaged me saying that she accidentally rescheduled me the same time as another customer. At this point I am getting annoyed because I leave the next day for my international trip and in dire need of a new nail set. She offers to reschedule me again for the same week, but I tell her that I can't because I will be out of the country. I asked if I could reschedule to next month when I'm back in town and she agreed. Natalie said that I don't need to officially book it online (which I found suspicious) and that I should just message her the date that I wanted. I told her the exact date and time but after that she completely stopped replying without confirming the date. A week before the 2nd rescheduled appointment, I messaged Natalie to confirm the suggested date and time. She didn't reply for an entire day so I followed up with a 2nd follow up message the next day. Again, she didn't reply at all. I realized that she was basically ghosting me at this point. As expected, I never got a response from Natalie even on the actual appointment date that I suggested. I was extremely annoyed and frustrated. I gave up trying to be patient. Very rude, immature, and unprofessional. I will not be returning to Nail box. read more

Before going to Ananya, I never got my nails done consistently because I could not find a nail tech whose work I loved. That has all changed now! I've been going to her consistently every 5~ weeks for the past 8 months. What I am most impressed about are the attention to detail in design and how long my nails last. There is no lift! I went here with high expectations after reading all the great reviews of Ananya and her work. As she was starting on my nails, I made a comment of 'sorry my cuticles are dry' and her response was.. " oh you have eczema".. I said NO. How rude of her to assume that I have a medical condition.. not very nice! Second... My nails started to lift only after three days of getting them done. I wasn't gonna leave a review because I didn't go through my appointment. I tried to cancel it right away but the website told me to either call or send an email. It was rather late at night and it was an impulse decision so I sent out an email to cancel my appointment. I wasn't aware that there was a cancellation policy. Under 72 hours is $40 and same day is $80. I got charged $41.40 and no nails. read more
