Upon stepping in, I can feel a sense of calm and relaxation. I've been here twice and enjoyed my facial both times. I did a Signature Facial with Cat the first time and loved how we started with a breathing exercise with oils to set the ambiance. This second time was with Naomi. I had the Gua Sha Facial. We started with LED lights for the arms and hands which was a first for me. Both times were so relaxing I fell asleep. Unfortunately for the second time it was during the gua sha (haha) so I don't remember most of that part. My face was glowing both times. I like how they include tip in the price. I knocked off a star because they charge a $10 credit card fee but the cost is too high to be carrying cash for it. I have bought a Gua sha tool from them, specifically to help with pressure points and migraines. I also got an attar balm recommended by my aesthetician to help with my dry patches on my cheek. My first visit at Monastery was unforgettable!! I booked with Naomi for the Super Glow Facial. She immediately had a warm & comforting demeanor that made me feel calm. I've never had any facial or massage that made me so relaxed to the point where I could focus on nothing else, but Naomi changed that!! She did such an incredible job that I just couldn't feel distracted by anything else in my life - not even the thought of what I'd eat for lunch. Her technique and procedure was both relaxing and functional, which is a huge indicator of value for me. When the facial was over, I gasped because of how soft my skin felt (I came in with pretty dry skin)! One of the biggest reasons I booked at Monastery is because they make so many of their own products with very natural ingredients. Although I didn't intend to buy products that day, I ended up leaving with the Lapiz body oil and Rose cleansing oil. I am not a skin care person, but these products might be making me look forward to it more. Also of note: Monastery was incredibly clean and quiet. Minimal and elegant. After reading such high ratings and so many good things about their skincare line, I really did have high bars and expectations for this place. I got a Signature facial ($185 not including tip) and honestly, it was underwhelming. The store is relatively very small. The interior is bright white and modern with 2 chairs as the seating area, and a large table to display their skincare products. I can see why some people may find this kind of environment calming, but personally if anything it makes me anxious. Now the treatment, I can tell that the aesthetician was very knowledgeable. She explained everything step of the way, and suggested some products and tools that I can use to treat my skin concerns at home as well. Aside from that, the facial experience wasn't as pampering and luxurious as what the reviews were raving about. I just felt like someone else is doing my skincare routine for me. I came in and walked out with the same face--just as much pores that needs to be cleaned, and skin that needs a glow. This was also my first time getting service at this place, so I am not familiar with their ways of operating. When my aesthetician told me that I'm all set, she walked out and left. I did not know if she will come back, or if I am good to leave. I stayed around for a few minutes and ended at the front desk where I'm supposed to finalize my payment. I love monastery. The products are great and I don't feel like I'm getting all these chemicals. The oils all smell so wonderful and my sensitive skin fairs well with them. I regularly see Cat, she's amazing. So knowledgeable and her technique is so soothing, like a soft face massage. She uses these awesome cold tools to help calm and relax my face during the facial. My face glows and I look and feel like a goddess after my sessions with Cat. She's recommended the rose cleansing oil and flora (hyralonic cream/lotion) and I'm so happy with them for my dry, aging skin. For my next product she highly recos adding retinol to my routine and gave me a sample. Love that I can try without pressure to buy. Just found out they do brow lamination, tint and lash tint. The minimal decor and beautiful light certainly evokes monastic qualities, which is exactly what I needed on a hectic Thursday afternoon after a long week at work. I was immediately greeted and welcomed by the kind staff and while waiting offered a nice cool glass of water - in an actual glass! Oftentimes at spas I may feel out of place. Even though I love facials and treatin myself, I can sometimes be intimidated by the atmosphere. That was definitely not the case at monastery! It was a perfect mix of elegance and feeling at home. My esthetician Emily immediately made me feel comfortable. She was kind, funny and had a perfect balance of keeping me informed while also letting me fall deep into one of the most relaxing facials I've ever had. This is the WORST experience I have ever had for brows, and the facial wasn't far behind. I went in for the microcurrent/LED "mini" facial, called the illuminate treatment, as well as a brow shape/tint. Not only did the appointment start late, the "micro current" device used was not a professional grade device, but instead one of those small handheld ones you can buy at TJ Maxx. She also extracted a pimple on my eyebrow and left it bloody and bruised--the whole reason I waited to get it professionally extracted was to AVOID a huge, bloody scar on my forehead. Then, she proceeded to completely destroy my brows. Though I requested a LIGHT tint, and specifically asked her to tint them lighter than my medium brown hair, I came out with eyebrows nearly black, looking like Groucho on steroids. Not only that, she applied the tint unevenly, so that one of my brows looked completely wonky and off from the other--it was awkwardly shortened by the tint, such that it was only tinted starting 1/4 into the brow onwards. In addition, she over plucked one of my brows in the weirdest way--it wasn't thin, but she over plucked the TOP of the brow, such that the arch had a weird dent/hole in it??? She also over plucked the tail of one brow so that one was shorter than the other. Finally, she used a RED tint on my BROWN eyebrows, so my brows look weirdly RED/BLACK. I never asked for any of this. When I walked out, the receptionist visibly looked taken aback at how bad my brows looked. I am so, so disappointed. I normally don't bother leaving reviews, but this place has 5 stars, so you need to know. WORST EVER, AVOID!!!! read more

I've been going to Monastery since early 2019 back when it was just Athena. I hadn't had a facial since 2020 (covid affected being able to visit), but came back recently on a trip home to SF. I saw Marija for my gua sha facial. It was heavenly. The end. I've also been on and off using Monastery's products, but Marija gave me a few samples of some of their lastest products. I can say that 1) I'm so proud of the business Athena has built, 2) Marija is amazing!, and 3) I'm glad she got me back onto the products. Have falling off using Monastery regularly for 2+ years, Marija told me my skin was suffering from dryness. It was the same diagnosis Athena gave me when I started seeing her. I like their holistic approach to skincare and my skin has continued to look great since my appointment. I purposefully made another appointment before I leave SF.
