Jollof Rice with choice of protein (beef)
    Jason P.

It's hard to successfully navigate new cuisine without help. It's been twenty some years since I first tried Indian food. I don't remember what I ate, but I definitely remember fumbling the order. Within the past several weeks, I noticed that Naija, a Nigerian restaurant, opened on the Berlin Turnpike near my home. I went in cold, and ordered Jollof rice with beef. The rice was great and I enjoyed it. The beef was a bit more challenging for me. I knew I needed help. Enter Yelp. My now Yelp friend Chi A. reviewed Naija and her review said she is Nigerian. Chi was gracious enough to let me tap her knowledge and she recommended I try efo riro soup. Tonight, I ordered it for takeout. Efo riro is a fantastically flavorful spinach based stew. Naija serves it with a choice of protein, and I chose chicken. When I call efo riro a spinach stew, it's not because there is noticeable liquid. It seems like it's more of a braise, and the spinach absorbs the liquid. It's spicy and I maybe picked up some chicken bouillon flavor. I tasted some sort of hot pepper product. It's basically a spinachy, flavor bomb. Who would like efo riro? If you like saag paneer, you would like efo riro. If you like spinach and spicy food, you would like efo riro. Really, if you like spicy food, and you're open to braised greens, you'll like it. The chicken was served with a tasty red sauce that I assume is tomato-based. The chicken was a bit denser than I'm used to. I'm not sure if that's a style choice, of if it was just cooked a bit too long. Doesn't matter, efo riro was the star tonight.

    Jollof rice with fish

Delicious Nigerian food! I ordered the grilled fish with plantains and jollof rice with fish. It does take a while if you order the grilled fish though, however the fish was huge! It comes with a spicy sauce on the side which is veerry spicy. Be warned. The jollof only comes with two pieces if the protein but both the fish and rice was delicious and flavorful. The jollof is not spicy. The fried fish was also good, the flesh was nice and tender. Definitely order the jollof!

I cant wait to come back!!! The food was delicious & as you can see the portions were plenty. I added extra fish with my rice but it does come with a protein of your choosing. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. I had some questions and she was very patient with me and descriptive I appreciate that. I definitely recommend!

The restaurant doesn't look like much from a Birdseye view however, once you walk in, I was greeted with such bright and happy smiles in open arms. I really felt welcome. I kept it pretty simple. I ordered jollof rice with the fish as my protein and a side of plantains. The food was amazing so much that I left the review should definitely try them out.

    Jollof with turkey and meat

I really wish I loved this restaurant cause it's the only jollof that delivers. I decided to fulfill my jollof craving with Nigerian jollof instead of my usual Ghanaian today and I'm sorely disappointed. Not only did I spend twice what I usually spend for a lot less, the jollof was not in the least spicy and the rice didn't seem like it had been simmered and cooked for a long period of time like it should be. I like my rice a little burnt, crispy textured nuanced. This didn't have any. Plus it wasn't served with anything other than meat. There was no shito, no egg, no nothing. The flavor was very disappointing. The meat they gave me tasted old and really gamey. I'm not one that's picky at all, but I will definitely go to burnside ave next time I'm having my jollof craving. Sorry I really really wanted to love this place, but alas it wasn't meant to be.

This is the first Nigerian restaurant I have been to. May be this is the only one in CT. And I loved the food. Everything had flavor. Nigerian red fried stew was probably my favorite. It was both flavorful and spicy. Ofada was flavorful, but less spicy. Egusi was a mild in heat as well as flavor. They recommended Egusi with Amala. Amala is kind of a pounded yam, similar to fufu. I also tried a couple of their drinks. Gingeraade was a super strong ginger drink. Go for it if you love ginger flavor. Emu palm wine, tasted a lot like the alcoholic palm wine. It was slightly sour. It is not alcoholic though. Overall quantity was small, prices are expensive, and food tastes good.

Goat meat pepper soup and GizDodo

This place could not have opened at the perfect time. Pregnant and the only thing I can keep down is Nigerian food and I Looove their food. Also love that you can call and order pick up very easily and timely. As a Nigerian, the Goat meat pepper soup hits just right especially when you ask for spicy and they make it SPICY!!!! The GizDodo is just as good. They have many options to try and if you haven't been and love goat meat, I highly recommend getting this soup!

This is the three meals and the order of Fried Plantain. Definitely not worth the money.

Portions are very small for the price. The chicken was pink and undercooked, the beef was undercooked and was not edible. They have two small pieces of meat with about 4 tablespoons of spicy, greasy sauce and fufu. The chicken was two drumsticks and about the same amount of sauce. The one saving grace was their meat pie.

    Disappointed very

It all came out to $12 dollars and lasted for two days. The jollof had more of a smoky/peppery flavor than Nigerian jollof I've had in the past. The standout to me was the fried chicken, l loved how the African spices enhanced the flavor. I saw a previous review where someone called this place ghetto and unsafe which isn't fair. Can it be intimidating to walk into because of its appearance and customer service? Maybe, but it's exactly like going to your favorite Jamaican, Spanish, or halal places in the area. The language barriers and cultural differences shouldn't stop you from enjoying new restaurants.

So if you see Tasty Ethnic Foods, Nhyira or Sidibe, all are referring to the same restaurant. For entree I went for jollof rice and waakye. Both of these are very flavorful and slightly spicy rices. By default it comes with chicken fry, mutton curry, boiled egg and fried fish. Portion is huge, and you get to taste everything. And everything is flavorful also. I had a couple of drinks as well. Ginger lamurgreen drink was less like a cola and more like a ginger herbal medicine. It had a strong ginger flavor, which is so strong that it burns in the throat a bit, like herbal medicines do. Housa fura millet drink was also less like a cola. It was more like a congee in a bottle which is slightly sweet. I feel it is more like a meal replacement drink.

I heard so many amazing things about Heritage Spice so I absolutely had to check it out! Also I friend of mine recently catered from Heritage Spice and the food was delicious (I loved the jolllof. It had the perfect smoky party Jollof flavor). I'll start off by saying the menu items are pricey and the prices nearly turned me away...but the food was INCREDIBLE! I seldomly come across a Nigerian restaurant that fully hits the mark on flavors and keeps everything true to the culture. I tried the egusi soup with goat meat and fufu. The stew had a generous amount of goat meat and the egusi tasted very fresh. There was a good level of heat without it being overly spicy. The spices in the stew reminded me of my grandmas home cooking. Lastly, the fufu itself was soft and tasted very fresh as well. The egusi stew truly hit the spot and was the highlight of my work week. Overall 8.5/10 for the egusi and fufu (8/10 for the jollof I tried at a catered event and 10/10 for the puff puff I tried at a catered event). I also ordered the food on Grubhub so that most likely inflated the prices. I'm excited to try out other items on their menu! When I went to the restaurant I was hoping to also get the puff puff because I tried their puff puff at a catered event but I was told they only sell puff puff on Sundays or do pre orders for specialty items like puff puff or meat pie.
