Okay so as a West African that eats Nigerian and French West African food all the time, I'm always very skeptical to try West African restaurants because I worry the flavors will be Americanized. I heard so many amazing things about Heritage Spice so I absolutely had to check it out! Also I friend of mine recently catered from Heritage Spice and the food was delicious (I loved the jolllof. It had the perfect smoky party Jollof flavor). I'll start off by saying the menu items are pricey and the prices nearly turned me away...but the food was INCREDIBLE! I seldomly come across a Nigerian restaurant that fully hits the mark on flavors and keeps everything true to the culture. I tried the egusi soup with goat meat and fufu. The stew had a generous amount of goat meat and the egusi tasted very fresh. There was a good level of heat without it being overly spicy. The spices in the stew reminded me of my grandmas home cooking. Lastly, the fufu itself was soft and tasted very fresh as well. The egusi stew truly hit the spot and was the highlight of my work week. Overall 8.5/10 for the egusi and fufu (8/10 for the jollof I tried at a catered event and 10/10 for the puff puff I tried at a catered event). I also ordered the food on Grubhub so that most likely inflated the prices. I'm excited to try out other items on their menu! I've been wanting to try this place for quite some time, always nice to have some new Ethnicity style places added to downtown Shelton. I walked in on a Saturday and went for the Chicken Schwarma. They put a spin on it and included some andouille sausage and their heritage sauce along with the slaw. Overall it was good but I was slightly disappointed. I like the wrap but wasn't crazy about the chicken. It was more of the shredded style and they threw the sausage in the wrap whole, definitely would have blended together if it was cut up. Slightly too much slaw, heritage sauce had a nice kick too it, had great flavor as well. They had some indoor seating, I took mine to go. This place has potential, just would like to see them change some stuff up. read more

Came here to grab some food for lunch. Upon entering I was greeted by warm smiles and a kind welcome. I ordered the jerk chicken with jollof rice and oxtail also with jollof rice. As I waited for the food I was jamming to some Spinall, definitely got the Nigerian vibes. The food was enough for my husband to have for both our lunch and our dinner ! I came here to try fufu and egusi soup for the first time. It did not disappoint. I also ordered a side of the fried plantains. Everything was so good. The fufu was pillowy and balanced the spice of the egusi perfectly. It had a very good spice kick to it. I ordered lamb in my egusi, and it was amazing. I've looked all over the place and found Heritage Spice It's over 17 miles away from me but I drove all the way their just to try it out and I got the Egusi soup (w/ assorted meats) and pounded yam. OMG how have I lived without this??? SOOOO AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! full of flavor, the spice is just perfect, texture, everything about it makes me so happy about the dish. Jumped on the Tik Tok train, and tried Afro-Caribbean for the first time! So impressed and the service here was just amazing! The employee taking orders was helpful in guiding us through the menu. We ended up getting the Jollof Rice w/ assorted meat, Egusi Stew w/ fish, and the Amala w/ gbegiri and ewedu. The egusi with fish was especially good and the goat and plaintains with the jollof rice were so tasty! Be aware everything was pretty expensive and some dishes were more worth it than others. For what we paid for the amala w/ gbegiri and ewedu, we got way more with other dishes. Also didn't know that the Amala was so bitter! The food was acceptable, but the restaurant is very tricky with pricing and deceptive practices. I was charged $4 to substitute the black fufu (green plantain) for the white fufu (pounded yam). I was surprised to see an additional $6 for meat. None of these charges were reflected in the menu, and I was not informed until I received the bill. The server assumed I did not want change when I gave $40 for the $28 total bill. I am definitely not going back due mainly to the dishonest conduct. read more

I went here due to a Nigerian who recently arrived in the states mentioning the jollof rice there being really good. As a fellow Nigerian (one that's been here for a while) I knew to hear that from a recently arrived Nigerian was a big deal. I checked it out with my American friends who have been curious to try jollof and mehn oh mehn . So freaking good!!! My friend from Maine got jollof with oxtail and loved it!! My Jamaican American friend said the oxtail was even better than the one we had a few weeks back at an authentic Jamaican restaurant Definitely check this place out. Saw this place driving thru downtown Shelton. I thought let's try something new, parked, went in and said "I'm going to try what ever you recommend ". OxTail on bed of rice, bean, yam! I thought ok ,I had oxtail soup 20 years ago and loved it. So got the order for take out. I was advised it was spicy but not super hot. Got home, took a bite of oxtail.... WoW, fantastic. The Yam Porridge is the best yam dish I have had anywhere, of any kind. The flavor is both surprising and addictive. This was supposed to be a side dish on my plate, but after the first bite I ate all the rest of it before even trying anything else. I could eat a giant bowl of this by itself without getting bored. Awesome flavor. (Note, it is just a little spicy. Not much, and think it is just the perfect amount to add interest without it becoming about the spiciness.
