TLDR: The River Rat is an overall good experience, but the food ranged from amazing to mediocre…read more The place itself was relatively lively and cozy. The servers were attentive to our needs. The dishes I ate will be rated separately because of their range in quality. Bread Basket: 4/5 The bread basket that came with the prime rib that I ordered was better than most. It came with multiple freshly baked dinner rolls with some char on them and crispy breadsticks, complemented by a garlicky butter. Soup of the Day (Seafood Bisque): 5/5 This soup was the best dish of all that I had ordered. Despite being a side dish for the prime rib, its rich flavor overshadowed everything else I ate for the evening. House Salad: 2.5/5 The salad is a standard salad that you can skip. Nothing special. Louisiana Lemon Pepper Walleye: 4/5 The walleye was the second best dish. It was a well seasoned, large filet that had a great tartar sauce to go with it. This is a dish I would order again if I came back. Prime Rib: 3/5 The prime rib was surprisingly underwhelming. The edges of the prime were a little tougher than I'd like, and the prime rib itself came out a little cold. The au jus could have been reduced to be a little more concentrated as well. Overall, if I were to come back I would choose to order some different menu items, apart from the soup.

UPDATE after revisiting:…read more Unfortunately, my opinion of this place hasn't changed. The restaurant feels extremely dated, the service was below average, and the food was below average as well. What makes it frustrating is that this place has so much potential, but the overall operation feels stale and stuck in the past. There seems to be very little culture or energy among the staff. Some employees give the impression that they've been doing the same thing for 10 years and are simply going through the motions. Nothing feels fresh, exciting or particularly memorable. The biggest missed opportunity is the evening and weekend business. After 8 PM, there should be a reason for people to stay here for drinks--an interesting cocktail program, better bar atmosphere, music, events, late-night specials or something that creates energy. Instead, people looking for that experience are going elsewhere. That's a huge amount of potential business walking out the door. This feels like an upper-management problem more than anything else. The location and foundation are already here. What it needs is fresh leadership with a clear vision for the food, service, bar program, employee culture and overall guest experience. With the right operator, I genuinely think this could become one of the most popular restaurants in the area. Right now, though, everything feels like it's running on autopilot. Ownership needs to recognize how much potential is being left on the table and bring in leadership capable of taking this place to the next level.

It feels like the kind of place that has something for everybody--drinks, food, darts, a little arcade area, and that friendly local-bar vibe where you could easily hang out for a few hours. I only stopped in on a Tuesday to use the ATM, so I haven't had a chance to try the food or drinks yet, but just based on the atmosphere, I'm actually excited to come back and give the place a proper visit. My only complaint was the smell. There was definitely an odd sewage/urine-type smell in parts of the place, and after seeing other reviews mention it, I understand what people are talking about. It wasn't enough to make me dislike the place, but it was noticeable. Without that issue, just based on my first impression, I probably would have given it five stars instead of four. Overall, really cool neighborhood-bar atmosphere and definitely a place I want to come back to. I'll update my review once I've actually had the food and drinks.

We ordered two of our usual favorites -- the Asiago chicken over angel hair pasta for me and the Cajun shrimp pasta for my husband. We also both started with the French onion soup, which is always amazing and one of the reasons we keep coming back. It was an unusually busy night because the owners were in the process of selling the restaurant, so the place was packed. Unfortunately, service wasn't the best this time. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed and often forgot about us while chatting with other tables. The food was still good overall, though my Asiago chicken came out a bit dry since it was lacking sauce. Once we mentioned it, it was corrected. Definitely not our best experience at Bentley's, but we still love the menu and the restaurant. We're really hoping the new owners keep the same great food standards because this has been one of our favorite spots for a long time.

Be careful at night though, the parking lot can be very dark! Their Mac and cheese is really good too. I didn't get it this time, but it's nice and creamy and cheesy. I highly recommend it!

It wasn't busy, but it was still nice to get our order taken quickly after we sat down. The beer prices are reasonable, particularly on tap. But, my wife's Moscow Mule seemed a bit weak, and it cost more than the beer. The food arrived quickly, too, and everything was hot off the grill. My wife and I both got the salmon sliders. Each sandwich has a generous chunk of perfectly cooked salmon. I ordered the tater tots, which were amazingly crispy and flavorful. My wife got the same thing, with french fries. The fries are good, but I like the tots better. My daughter's mac & cheese was super cheesy and buttery, and just needed a little salt to make it perfect. My son got a burger with a fried egg on it, and he said it was nice and beefy. Prices were reasonable, too. And, there are big screen TVs wherever you look. I can see this becoming a regular stop for good food and drinks.

In addition to the Mexican candy shots we tried the steak bites, recommended by Samantha our waitress, cblt, and a mule variation. I know flavors are subjective so I wasn't too vocal about the food flavors but my mule tased like a lemon water with my choice of alcohol. When I mentioned it to the waitress she was very dismissive, so much so that she walked off while I was still talking to her. I will be calling the manager to share my experience in the morning. In addition to her dismissive demeanor we didn't get much attention from our waitress. We saw here when we sat down, when she brought the shot, when she brought the food and sebsequently she she brought the mule. When she brought the mule she offered me a mix for my food and I guess I should have taken the hint then. We probably sat for at least 15 or twenty minutes before I had a chance to ask for some dressing to flavor my sandwich which she never asked about. And even thin my friend had to walk over to her to get her attention because she wasn't receptive to out waving and yelling to flag her down. And I never got my dressing.

I can understand why people come here when the back deck is open--the water view is definitely the biggest draw. But with the outdoor seating closed, I honestly don't see much reason to come. Maybe it's a completely different atmosphere at night or when the deck is open, but based on our Sunday lunch experience, I wouldn't come back.

Once seated it took an additional 30 min to be greeted by a waiter -- This seemed to be everyone's experience. The menu is so not it. They were out of the steak, the only thing that sounded appetizing. I settled with potato cheddar soup that was more like queso in a cup. Such a disappointment. I don't understand why restaurants are okay with operating at this level. If you're going to have a restaurant why not strive to make it the best?
