I've been a customer at Young's General Store in Catskill ever since they opened. Helpful, friendly, cooperative and most of all eager to please. It's so worth it to shop at Young's General Store than any big box store......by a country mile in fact. They're well stocked and if by chance they are low or out of something they can get it very quickly from their other store or at worst tell me when it's arriving from their supplier. About 45 minutes to an hour were spent browsing through the incredible old/new - new/old stock (however it's referred to) and we had the pleasure of talking with Dennis, who answered whatever questions I had while gently rebuffing my attempts to buy things that were not for sale. I did however purchase a nice old file in new condition as well as an old, ornate drill bit holder which will proudly be displayed in my home shop. This store has a hazy, relaxed, out-of-time feel to it and is as relaxing and comfortable as any familiar place where one wants to get lost for a while and forget the loud, impersonal modern world in which we find ourselves immersed far too often.

Little did he know that we were planting daffodils in memory of my late mother in law and needed the tools to complete the job efficiently. Smith's is my gold standard when it comes to hardware stores. It's been here forever and for good…read morereason. The staff really makes the difference, as they are extremely knowledgeable and will go out of their way to help, including giving recommendations on how to handle a project if asked. They're the best thing about this place. The space itself is pretty large, and they do a great job of packing in everything from paint, to power tools, and seemingly everything in between. Not much in the way of housewares unlike some hardware stores but that's a non-factor to me. Technically affiliated with Ace Hardware which helps for their rewards program. Parking is also not bad in the Saugerties area which is helpful too (since they are on Main St). I come here whenever I need a serious hardware store for a project, and they've never let me down.

That sweet tie dye dress in the window? MINE! There was also a super cool leather woven bag in the window, too. Maybe next time. Melinda (I hope I got her name right?) the owner is dripping with style and great taste. She looks like a fashion designer. Good news: you too can look like Melinda, because her racks are filled with tons of dresses, tops, pants and skirts...natural fabrics and so pretty. She also has eye wear...like REALLY COOL eye wear.
