I was in the area for work and googled record stores near me and Mystic Disc pops up. Looks like its only 20 mins or so away so lets give it a shot. Really glad I did. A little hard to find if you don't know where you're going. Waze knew better than me to go into the public parking lot. (I went around the block twice without doing it yelling at her when she tells me you've arrived, no I haven't!). Anyway, finally listened to waze and found it. It's a small store but it is jam packed with records cd tapes you name it. Very well organized and mostly alphabetical. Found a handful of records to add to my collection and engaged in a nice conversation with the clerk who turned out to be the owner. He explained his grading and cleaning processes and even his mail order service (was looking for a couple he didn't have). Really nice and friendly. Even gave me a card for one hour of free parking which was nice. I will add this store to my lists of stop bys next time I am up this way. read more

This shop is a must see for any lover of music. You can easily blow through hours just going through the fantastic collection of records. What you want to do though, is meet the owner, Dan. We walked in to introduce my 12 year old son (who is an active musician himself), to what an old school record store is like, and the experience made our day! Dan was absolutely inspirational to our son (and to us) and introduced us to an amazing musician we all know who just happened to be hanging out there. We ended up purchasing an album my son's been looking for and talked about how much we enjoyed our time there for the rest of the day. If you are in or around Mystic and love music - you owe it to yourself to stop in. Been there once before today about a year and a half ago. Very good experience and bought 150 dollars worth of records. Today not so good. Thought the prices were excessively high and told the owner so on my way out. He countered by saying he cleans and guarantees the records against skips. Nice service to provide but I do not think that turns a $5 record into a $15 record. He was nasty to me as I was leaving. I will not be back. I drove from New Haven to spend the day in Mystic. If prices were more in line with most stores I am sure I would have gone home with a nice stack of wax. Will not be back. Awful people skills. read more

Dan was absolutely GREAT. It is not very often you run into an artisan - someone who has dedicated their life to a craft and is not only great at it, but enjoys it , cares about the craft not just for the buck but somehow finds his meaning in it. Dan is that guy! We are downsizing, so I sent him a list of old albums we haven't listened to in 20 years. His final price was way higher than his estimate via email - total confidence when in his shop on his knowledge and forthrightness or honesty. Other people in the store and he did a nice job of balancing looking through our 120 albums and the people and explaining some of the artifacts in the store. Just a great experience. I would recommend that anyone slightly interested in music just visit his shop to peruse the vinyl and listen to the stories. Amazing!! read more

I visit Mystic once or twice a year. I have always loved this town and just love the people and how nice and welcoming everyone is. I've been collecting records since the 70's and have always stopped here whenever I came to mystic. At times I wouldn't find what I was looking for but always would buy something because I loved the nostalgia I felt there. This time I did find a couple of records I was looking for. Old, used records which I love. But I could tell these were there for awhile and at some point you have to move them. I felt they were overpriced for the condition they were in. I have friends that own record stores and they were always willing to mark down on an old record just to pass it on. That's what it's about sometimes. I was going to ask the guy that was working if he would give me a deal. I believe he was the owner. However he was super busy on a HUGE political rant on how messed up our country was. Mind you my kids were with me. He went ON and ON on HIS opinion of our country. I'm a legal immigrant and could care less on what people think of our nation. The more I looked at him the more he spoke louder. My kids were almost afraid and asked me to walk out. I will never support a business that is able to function & is ungrateful of the country he does it in. Because where I come from. He would NEVER be able to function let alone speak his mind. read more

Full disclosure: I am not some crazy vinyl freak who is obsessed with his record collection. I do have discerning taste when it comes to music & have recently purchased a record player so I'm going to start frequenting Mystic Disc more often in 2013. I don't understand how you can't love your local independent "record" shop. Yes, records. Vinyl never really died especially at Mystic Disc. I can't really vouch for their selection but I just purchased a copy of AC/DC's Powerage & can't wait to use it on my (soon to arrive) record player. I've picked up some collector's stuff on Black Friday's Record Store Day & have seen plenty of current offerings on vinyl here. I'm pretty sure they carry CD's too but can't say if they have cassettes. Dan (who is usually there when I've gone) is definitely an outgoing guy who would make anyone comfortable. I never got a condescending attitude here! Only on one recent trip was the place not packed. It is a bit cramped & not really fancy but I kinda like that about it. No frills, bells or whistles. I like Mystic Disc! Yesterday, I scored a promo copy of Fables of the Reconstruction for a cool $8.95. The store is pretty well stocked, but it's not impossible to navigate. Things are organized and the essentials (a random new Seals and Croft album, too many copies of the Madonna Angel single, and a scarce sampling of over-priced Smiths discs) are on hand at all times. It's simple: go in, find records, buy them-- with a credit card, even-- get out. I've never had trouble with the service, and once they stayed open a few minutes late for us to continue browsing. read more

I had high hopes for this place, but wound up pretty disappointed. (To be honest, this happens to me in most record stores I go to.) Very generic selection, I thought. Lots of Beatles. Some Tom Waits, but it was all overpriced (some used records were priced at almost $30. I have the same Tom Waits albums at home, bought for $5). I'm not a vinyl connoisseur, so the fact of the matter might just be that this is what shopping for vinyl is LIKE, and I've just gotten lucky in the past. Maybe I don't have the patience for it, and I should just shut up and order my vinyl brand new from amazon for $20. Either way, I was excited to visit but left a little bummed. read more

Just one visit here has exceeded my expectations and created a lifelong customer out of me. I popped in yesterday looking for a very specific gift for my sister and something for myself. The person there was happy to help me--they quickly directed me what I was looking for and gave me a tour of the shop. I was so grateful for the warm welcome, his enthusiasm and the assistance. Sometimes I find myself tense because I've been brushed off or ignored in specialty shops similar to this because I don't fit the typical customer profile. I was so happy this isn't the case here. Anybody could have walked in that door and they would have received the same quality, attentive treatment that I did. In my experience here the staff was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, forthcoming, and definitely passionate about what they do. Their vinyl selection is amazing. I've never seen such a wonderful selection. Even though there was a lot there, everything was well organized and easy to find. It all looked to be in great condition, I was especially pleased with how pristine the cover art to my Jim Croce album was! The records I brought home played beautifully as well. What a wonderful and happy experience! I work at a small business in Mystic so I'm always on the lookout for other local businesses to show my support. Mystic Disc is a business that is entirely deserving, do yourself a favor and check them out if you haven't already. I'll be back for more! read more

Great Little Record Shop. I am reading some of the negative reviews and I would have to think that they are describing a different place. I have been to Mystic Disc three times, the first was Record Store Day 2012. The reason I went back for a second and third time was because the experience was very good. The owner Dan is a very nice, and in my opinion, honest guy. You'd be hard pressed to find record stores that let you return an LP if it doesn't play to your standards. Between the three visits I've paid to Mystic Disc, I have purchase in the ball park of 20 LPs. Not one of them was a dud. They have bins of $3 records that are of various quality, but the regular used stock was in great condition. As far as the prices being high, I have to say that I disagree with that as well. I'd rather pay $10-$15 for an LP that sounds like it's new, vs. a $5 piece of junk that sounds like a bowl of Rice Krispies when you add milk. Mystic Disc has a decent amount of stock to look through. Any time I've asked for help, Dan or anyone else working in the store, were very helpful. One reviewer said that they were negatively criticized for the LP selection they made. Two of the three times I was in the store I bough multiple KISS LPs. I would think if the attitude of the store was one of "too cool for the room", buying KISS records would have set them into a tail-spin and made it impossible for them to keep their comments to themselves. Not only didn't they criticize me for my purchase, but when I was in the store this past Saturday, one of the owner's friends went in the back room and found an LP that I was looking for and played it on the store's main turntable to make sure it was worth the price on it. That's pretty excellent service in my book. Bottom line, if you are looking for used vinyl and are in the Mystic area, do yourself a favor and check out Mystic Disc. If they have what you are looking for, you'll end up with clean vinyl that will sound great on your turntable. read more

It doesn't get any better than Mystic Disc! I just love this store. I'm a very enthusiastic record collector and I visit this store about every ten days or so, if the finances allow it. Dan, the owner, is a friendly and personable guy, very fun to chat with, and very knowledgeable. His staff is also very nice and extremely helpful. I miss the Disc. Dan is the MAN! Where do you meet people like this guy? Nowhere, he is one in a billion. Nice, friendly, and an encyclopedic knowledge of music. The records can be pricey but thats what happens when a record shop gets smart and sells stuff online... He consigns which is amazing! Plus, if you tell Dan what you are looking for he will find it whether just looking through peoples' records they are trying to sell him or on one of his recon trips some all the way to Europe. Not to mention Dan's ties to the music industry and awesome personal holding like og 13th Floor Elevators... just makes you jealous you weren't his friend growing up! read more

Very nice record shop! Comfortable place to peruse good vinyl. The owner and employees have always been friendly and helpful. I was hesitant to ask for an artist I could not find in the bins, but was looking for something specific and they dashed into the back and came out with several records I had been on the search for. I really appreciate the fact that nearly everything is in very nice shape- and if you happen to find the occasional record that is a little dusty or dirty, they will clean it for you. read more

Great shop located in the heart of downtown Mystic, it has been around since the late 70's and Danny and the Disc have been carrying the LP torch proudly the entire time. This fact alone should cause any record collector to darken this doorway. They will have something for anyone weather you have 1 LP or 1000. Great caring owner, organized shop on the cozy side, Local music selection, new + used records, easy parking and nice proximity to other great shops and restaurants. This is the best record store I have been to...and I've been to a lot. The owner (and his friends? Employees?) are incredibly nice and genuine music lovers. I have never left disappointed or empty handed. They don't have a huge selection of new releases but personally that's not why I go record shopping. My husband and I came in this store to find some records and the moment we walked in the door, all we heard was the owner yelling on the phone about his personal life and family issues. We were in the shop for 20 minutes with him yelling on the phone the entire time. I find this extremely rude and unprofessional. The only reason this shop is getting 2 stars is that my husband was able to find 1 record he wanted. If you want a variety of records, come on in. But if you want to do it in a friendly, welcoming environment, I'd go somewhere else. read more
