We had been eating local food for weeks in Europe and were dying for something different. We saw this Japanese sushi / teppan yaki place in Zermatt and decided to give it a try. You reach Myoko down a long walkway from the main street behind an Italian restaurant. Went there with my wife and two kids and were seated right away outside in the only table that I saw available. A nice setting outside under a covered porch (summer, of course). There were also many tables on the lawn in front. And, it was evident that Myoko was already well known amongst the Japanese tourists.
First, the not so good. The server was OK and even a little indifferent toward us. She was busy but didn't really seem that busy. Service was slow at first and got slower....took a little while for them to take our drink and food orders, took longer than expected for food to come, food came out at different times, daughter ordered another sushi roll and that took a long time, wife's main course came out as the rest of the family was finishing. But, about half way through the dinner they began apologizing and said the kitchen was backed up. And, they also apologized at the end of the meal so I think that we appreciated that recognition. It wasn't so slow that we expected something free like many do in the states. It was just longer than expected dinner.
Now for the good. The food was excellent and brought this rating from 3 stars to 4 stars. I got a gin and tonic and my wife got a glass of wine. So far, so good. My green salad came out with my wife's tempura app and both were nicely prepared, very fresh and had great flavor. The salad nicely done with a sesame dressing and a mix of lettuces. Thing 1 got a salmon roll, rice and miso soup and loved it. I tried the miso and it was definitely tasty. Thing 2 got a chicken skewer with nifty dipping spices and miso soup and rice. She also loved it. I got the giant maki roll ("giant" was a good description for the price as well at 34CHF!!!) with a mixture of veggies and fish including salmon and tuna. Plus, some strategically placed and very unique spices that were almost indian but I could never quite place them. Not what I expected but delicious. Wife got seared tuna as a main course and it was excellent as well. Thing 1 and Thing 2 got a small scoop of premium (homemade?) strawberry ice cream served with fresh fruit.
This is Zermatt and all of this came at a price, of course. 248CHF. I definitely can't say it was worth the price since you can have this same meal in the states for around $100 plus tip. But, there aren't that many options for sushi in Zermatt and a burger can cost 20CHF or much more. A friend even paid 15CHF for a bottle of water at the Matterhorn cafe so I guess we got a bargain? Go to Myoko with an interest in something other than local foods, an expectation of a slightly different twist on the American idea of sushi and a full wallet. Would definitely go back to Myoko. read more
