I am not an expert on guns, nor gun clubs, but my brother-in-law is a member here. When I come…read moredown to visit, this is one of the places we like to go together for a few hours of brotherly bonding. He has two Sig 9 mil handguns, and I get the opportunity to learn how to use them and shoot on an indoor range. Lafayette is off the beaten path, which is a no brainer given the noise generated by the weapons on the outdoor ranges. It gets loud. Inside, the range is well set up, and everyone associated with the club management is first class friendly and knowledgeable. They are also incredibly patient with a novice who keeps shooting up their clothespins and PVC target frames. Too bad I wasn't aiming at them. My exposure to these guns and people has really opened my eyes to the engineering and design that goes into making a shooting iron these days, and more importantly the culture surrounding it. I am very impressed with the combination of warmth and seriousness that the people I meet display. Men, women and kids at all skill levels interact in a friendly, respectful manner. The teaching of gun safety is ever present, and the willingness to accept guidance a clear indication that everyone understands that while shooting is a fun sport, it also requires high skill levels and an appreciation of the potential for destruction. Having checked it out a few times, I now bring my young teenage son with us to join in both the bonding and the shooting. He is a Star Boy Scout and already has taken safety courses and earned the merit badges associated with rifles and shooting. I was amazed that he knew what to do and can shoot with a steady hand. I just bought him a set of "Ears," and we have discussed our mutual interest in taking this further. Lafayette Gun Club is an excellent place to go (if you can get in) to learn and practice this sport, and see what goes into gunsport today. Why only 4 Stars? A snack bar and more comfortable waiting areas in and outside would do the trick.

Myrtle Grove WMA - Clothes pins and target stands provided. Bring your own targets. Don't expect a pro shop or anything like that; it's a down-home place.

It's a nice 40 minute drive that I don't mind taking...I've been roughly four times and quite often I run into a few locals each occasion. Ample parking and a short walk to the fishing area...the pond is stocked maybe 4 times per year and with the amount of fish stocked you'd think it was a gold mine...well that's not always the case hence I keep coming back hoping to strike gold....is it possible...you bet....I've caught my 5 limit catch on 2 occasions and have been skunked just once. I like those odds...there's some sweet spots around the pond but you have to use the clues to find them.....with the Lilly pads are cut down the amount of debris is very low. There are rumors that say there are crappie, bass, bluegill, and trout available. Great place to fish with kids since it's a short walk from the car to the pond. Only negative is there isn't a bathroom I've located besides the woods lol. I've seen some bikers explore the area too which is also pretty nice. Even when it's a few people the place feels tranquil...but the gun firing could alarm some but it doesn't bother me as I come to fish and to fish I will go pretty much anywhere. There is a canoe launch and only electric motors are allowed so it doesn't seem to bother the fish. Bring your license as DNR is frequent at this location. It is quite the dirt road to the pond but I saw a hemi charger do it and that's rear wheel drive. There's isn't a lot of trash cans so please be respectful and clean up after yourself...it's fisherman code to properly dispose of your materials. Until next time myrtle grove
