Came here with my gf for my bday to teach her how to shoot...the fact that the place is a sh!t hole didn't bother me too much being as it's a shooting range. It was the immediate sh!tty attitude from the girl at the counter that did. She was standing next to a sign that said something to the effect of 'it's better to ask stupid questions than to make a stupid mistake, and yet she was really put out by us asking basic questions about the place and their nonsense policies. They require you to purchase their overpriced garbage ammo that jammed more times than not in my very well cleaned & oiled Sig. I rented a .22 Ruger rifle from them which was dirty as hell and jammed every single shot, returned it and was given another one which was in just as bad of shape, as well as given more of her attitude when I asked if this one was taken better care of than the last one. How dare I require a quality product. Only reason I stayed was because my gf was really excited and wanted to learn to shoot. $16 range fee for 2 $29 for 50 trash 9mm rounds $18 for 50 trash .22 rounds $2 for eyes/ears $3 for 3 targets $10 for dirty rifle rental Nah. read more

A note for anyone coming here, outside ammunition is not permitted and all ammo MUST be provided by the range. This wouldn't be an issue if the range did not reload their own ammo. We shot our: XD Mod 2 9mm (owned for 5ish years) HK 9mm Rented a S&W Shield 9mm All 3 guns were stove piping cases and failing to chamber the ranges provided ammo. When we talked to one of the range masters, she grabbed some ammo from behind the counter (not from the bags we purchased) and cycled rounds through all 3 guns without issue. She chalked it up to us not holding the gun tightly enough and not letting energy go into the slide. After she walked away, we again tried the ammo we purchased and continued to have issues feeding 2 out of 3 rounds. After 2 rounds failed to feed into my XD, it squibbed a round and left the bullet stuck in my barrel. We decided at that point not to shoot any more of the ammunition through our guns. After inspection, almost every round we purchased was bulging at the end of the casing and it was obvious to me this was the issue. It was then I read a sign that stated all ammo was reloaded. The staff was kind and refunded us for 3 of the bags of ammo we had not fired and we paid our range fee. They were nice, but it's apparent the ammo is incorrectly loaded and the cases are poor quality. There were 2 more people at the range having the same issue we were with 9mm. For reference I have been shooting competition 3 gun, distance and Trap/Skeet for over 10 years. Myself and my partner have many thousands of rounds between us and I personally reload all of my ammunition (except shotgun). There would have been no issue if we could have shot our own ammo, but that's not range policy. Otherwise our experience was standard and I had no other issue. read more

So me and my gf have been wanting to go to a shooting range for about a year or so now. It's not like we talked about it a lot, but we were interested in the idea. I thought about going to this particular shooting range because it was pretty close to our other points of interests for that day (it's located in South Side). When first arriving, the outside looks kind of beat up and it looks like a small closed up warehouse; some of the boarding was coming off, paint is chipped, etc. The parking lot surrounds most of the building and has about maybe 30 or so parking spaces and is located right behind a small car dealership. Visually, we weren't impressed and looked a little sketchy but we were already there.. The employees here are SUPER friendly! I'm not sure how many times I can reiterate that. I can't remember the fellow's name that helped us through the whole process but explained everything to us from start to finish and what to expect considering this was our first time at a shooting range, and more importantly our first time shooting a real gun. You HAVE to buy their own ammunition. You can't bring your own. Since we were amateurs, we stuck to .22 caliber (dont quote me on this, but it's the caliber they start off most people who are new to this experience). It was only 3.95 for 50 bullets which I thought was a pretty good deal. We shot two different types of guns, one was a pistol. The pistol was your standard size gun and the recoil wasn't too bad. It was hard to figure out if anything was coming out b/c it didn't seem like we were hitting our target at all... haha. It only had about 10 bullets so we had to reload it a lot. They have about 20 shooting lanes total and it's located underground. It's not really that big and it can get very loud and a little smoky down there. It's also pretty beat up down there with ammunition shells everywhere. The fellow that helped us out asked if we wanted to try something "exotic" and he said we should try some sort of rifle with an extensive name I can't recall. At first, me and my gf looked at each other and we thought "Hell no, we can't shoot something like that!!" But the employee reassured us that since it used the same bullet size, the recoil would be about the same.. so we went for it! OMG, this may have been the best decision ever. The recoil was hardly there and the rifle was very comfortable to handle and shoot. This particular rifle had a red laser to help you guide so it was pretty cool. You could also shoot without having to pull back the gun so it made shooting a lot more fun. Me and my gf definitely had a great time here, we both really enjoyed shooting the rifle and will definitely shoot other types of rifles the next time we come visit. The total came out to be about $45 for the both of us for 2 guns and about 200 bullets which was a pretty good deal. read more

Stayed in the Richmond area for nearly two months, and that was a little too long going without any trigger time, so I did my Yelp research and decided on Dominion to shoot. Easy to find off of the Midlothian turnpike. Military discount for range time - $5/hr, great rate. BUT they make you buy their ammunition to shoot, even with your firearms. A box of 9mm reloads cost $20, way higher than what I pay for reloads. Oh well, it works nearly the same at a range that cost $20/hr. About 20 lanes, no wait to shoot. 75 feet max, about average for ranges I go to. A few weeks later I brought a friend to shoot for the first time, she enjoyed it. Friendly staff, it was a real plus for my friend to have another female to help pick up things. I would definitely try to use the Fort Lee range first, but Dominion is a good alternative. I have never visited a shooting range before nor have I ever shot a gun. The gentleman behind the counter came down to the lane, showed by how to load and shot the gun, answered a million questions LOL. PROS: + The staff is very very friendly and accommodating. They are knowledgeable and will go to great lengths to help you out. + FFL transfers aren't expensive, if you are buying something and need a good place to do an xfer, this is the place to go. + Good selection of firearms to pick from if you want to rent a gun. + Range time is very inexpensive + 25 yard range ( 75 feet ) + Military and Law Enforcement discounts. + No RSO watching over you. + Classes offered for new shooters or for Concealed Carry. + You don't have to clean up after yourself, they do it for you. CONS: - due to "insurance" requirements, you MUST buy their ammunition, and it's not worth the cost. I don't consider myself a cheapskate, but generally speaking - I don't mind them making a margin on ammo, but 2x is a bit much when other ranges don't charge as much. - Ventilation isn't great in there. Exposure to the dust in rifle ranges is not a good thing for your health. - Lighting isn't great in there - Some of the target tracks don't work well/properly. Ended up fighting with mine for awhile before I was able to retrieve my target. - The condition of the drive from the street to the range may require 4WD if you come in from Midlothian due to the potholes. - No RSO watching over fools shooting like the movie cameras are rolling. It's not a bad place, but it's not stellar either, but I'd rather they charge me $25 an hour to shoot and I shoot my own ammo than to have to shell out more money for ammo than I'd like, BUT the friendly and helpful staff makes up for it. PS: to the person who was booted out. If you were offered to go elsewhere, then someone in your party was being either unsafe or was rude. I actually didn't even know this range existed until my guy brought me to show me how to shoot for the first time. I've been twice so far, and the staff is very knowledgable and helpful. Naturally, being a gun range, it's very loud so if you bring your own ear protection - don't bring those dinky little foam ear inserts. Just use their over ear ones. Your ear drums will thank you! You of course can bring your own guns, but have to purchase their ammo from what I understand. And they have a very nice selection of guns to shoose from if you want to shoot theirs. It's given me the opportunity to figure out what type of gun I would like to get having shot a few different ones. They have a great deal where you can "rent" 2 different guns for just $10. You can only take 1 in at a time though. This is what me and my guy do when we go so we can shoot 2 different guns the same day. We will go through 1 full box of ammo per gun alternating who shoots a full clip. Talk about a fun day date! :-) They have all kinds of targets to pick from as well. We are partial to the Zombie targets though. You need to get ready for the impending doom of the Zombie apocalypse! This is so far our go-to palce for shooting as the one on broad street requires a membership to just step foot inside, and it's quite pricey from what I hear. read more

This was one of my first experiences at a shooting range in Richmond, and it was okay. I've previously been to outdoor ranges, so that might be why I'm at a 3 star review instead of a little higher. The staff was helpful, fast, and knowledgeable. Absolutely no complaints here on that. In fact, after my husband had a bad experience at another range in town, they gave him a freebie to the range so he would give them a try and come back! And because of the heat at the time, they had some complimentary bottles of water to take with you. So great customer service. However, the actual range was a little dirtier, louder, and rundown then I expected. One of our targets (not the paper, but what you staple it to) wasn't working right and we couldn't get it adjusted. It looked pretty well used too. Not a big deal, we just shared one range and I was getting instruction from my husband so it worked. It is VERY SMOKY in there. Which again, I'm used to outdoor ranges, so I don't deal with this as much. There was not a ton of safety guidance given, but maybe we looked like we knew what we were doing? I'll also mention some of the clientele seemed a little questionable, but who am I to judge (maybe I looked questionable to someone there too!)? Like Timmy mentioned, you have to buy their ammo. It's a little more than you could probably find elsewhere, but the price is better than a couple other places in town. The other "equipment" is at a fair price as well if you don't bring your own. I forgot my eye protection and I think they only charged me $0.50 to rent them for our session. Overall, we'll be back (in fact my husband's been back several times), but I'll be better prepared of what to expect. read more

Good place for veteran and novice gun-shooters alike. The staff here are incredibly friendly and professional, and I could tell there were a wide variety of patrons in there. The space ain't pretty, in fact it's down right sketchy heading into the parking area- you have to go through a used junk car lot to get there. But it's a shooting range, so whatever. My friends and I spent several hours there for a bachelor party and racked up quite a big bill with all the ammo we were shooting. This was my first time ever shooting a gun, but my friends said it was actually way cheaper than they were expecting. read more

Very friendly and helpful staff. They even helped me with a difficult type 3 malfunction with my gun. And with checking zero on my laser. Casey their gunsmith is very good with very reasonable prices . You do have to buy their ammo which is about 30% higher than bringing your own but they don't charge range fee by the hour . And they offer reloaded ammo at about $2 to $3 less than new ammo for 50 rounds. There are no assigned lanes so if you find yourself next to a .44 magnum , you can just move. The heating and air conditioning is not great so try to go when it's 45 to 85 degrees outside. I've tried other shooting ranges in Richmond but I find myself coming back here often . read more

It had been a while since I had been here, so I expected a lot of improvement at my most recent visit since there is now a far superior range just across the river. Boy was I wrong. In fact, they had made it more expensive. They now charge a range fee AND still make you buy their overpriced reloads to shoot. The range is still dark and cold. So dark that you can barely see your target if you run it out to 25 yards. They still run the space heaters, presumably to stave off ice in the uninsulated range building. read more

Seems a little sketchy and old when you first pull up. Watch out for pot holes. When you walk in though its a different story. The staff are very friendly and polite. It's very laid back, which makes me feel more comfortable. It's also safe from what I can tell. I'm not very experienced when it comes to guns, but I know some stuff. You do have to buy their ammo though and there is an $8 range fee per person. I have been there twice and took my recently purchased Smith & Wesson. Model 469 9 mm. A box of 50 rounds of 9 mm costs about $19.95 new. The reloads are $17 something. They also have a wide selection of paper targets for 50 cents each. They also have several guns that you can rent, but I've only used my own so far. Overall I had an awesome experience and will be back. read more

I had a terrific experience at Dominion Shooting Range. WELL worth the (for me) 80ish minute drive. The shooting range in my town is very...the opposite of Dominion. Luckily my work often takes me to Richmond and I will be a frequent visitor. I hope to go monthly, we'll see. I'm considering the yearly membership because the savings add up quickly if you plan on shooting there regularly. (The staff member who helped me showed me at the end that with a membership I would have saved $13 on my bill that day), On my first visit I only stayed an hour, and went through 100 rounds of ammunition. For $10 you get to rent two firearms (One on the range at a time). I also rented safety equipment (which I will be purchasing) and targets. I had not fired a gun in years and I was eager to try out my new 9 mm Ruger but I thought it best to start with something smaller so I rented the 8 shot Ruger LCR with the Crimson Trace laser in 22 caliber. (SWEET GUN) , then I tried the Walther P 22. The Walther P 22 may be TOO sweet! By the way, if you're a gun noob like I am, the 22 caliber and the 9 mm are not even close to each other, not in recoil, not in how loud they are, my 9mm sounded and kinda felt like a cannon after firing the .22 ( and when another group came in with an assault style rifle, my 9mm couldn't match those decibels. Dominion offers a laid-back, friendly, informative and safe environment for folks and I intend at some point to bring my son down to begin training him in the safe handling and use of firearms. read more

Went here yesterday for a fun day trip with my boyfriend! It was his first time handling a gun, but definitely not mine. We were there for around 30 minutes and spent ~$80 which was expected since the weapon we rented was $50 itsself! It was a good price, and came with 50 free rounds. Only thing that slightly threw me off was that we had to purchase targets (all less than a dollar)! Which makes sense and they were nice enough to let us return the targets we did not use. My wife and I just visited your range and I have to tell you that it was the absolute worst experience I have ever had in my 30 years of firearms experience. 1st Issue - (Rental) XDM 9 kept jamming (lodging) in the chamber 3x The weapon jammed on me 3 times. I noticed after the first jam that it looked like that it had been weeks since the last field strip and cleaning. Not only was there not a range official on the firing line, I had to leave the weapon in the lane in order to go back upstairs to get one of your staff to come down to clear the weapon. This person was not only RUDE, but also condescending and obviously lacked professional training in customer service with her smart-mouthed commends about why the weapon kept jamming! As a matter of fact, one of her comments I believe was, "User Error???" 2nd Issue - (Rental) Sig P320 jammed twice (lodged) in the chamber My switch out rental again jammed on me twice. Again, I noticed that the weapon was extremely dirty after the first jam. I have to tell you that all of my years in the military serving as a combat team commander, I have NEVER HAD ONE JAM with Sigs in the field or combat and this really took me by surprise! Again, I had my wife go upstairs to request for your staff to come down and clear the weapon not wanting to leave it unsecured on the range. My wife mentioned to me that two of your staff then ROLLED THEIR EYES knowing it was with me before coming down to get it to clear. At this point, we were done and went back upstairs. This is when I encountered not only an unprofessional engagement with the first girl that waited on us when signing in, she continued to MOUTH-OFF to me as a paying customer in your establishment and really treated me as though I had not clue or experience with these weapons! I requested a credit or partial refund after spending 15 minutes down range dealing with multiple jams and was RUDELY and UNCONDITIONALLY TOLD by the same young girl that wasn't going to happen and YOU CAN'T GET A REFUND??? REALLY???? Her approach was not only offensive to me but absolutely was combative! I have to admit, my first thought was that your staff treated me/us this way because of our brown skin??? Surely, this was not the case and you don't have employees there that treat customers or anyone in general this way. This was absolutely the worst range experience that we've ever encountered from start to finish! This will be the last time that we spend time at your place of business as well as I'll be sure to let everyone with our influence know of the way we were mistreated through the end. On top of that, your stellar employee there had to make one more additional comment as we were walking out. "HEY, YOU MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GREAT NIGHT!!!" Brought my sister here to shoot for her birthday and while we were having a conversation amongst ourselves while the others in our party were filling out the forms to use the range... we were very rudely interrupted my an associate, who I believe told me her name was Kristin, could have been lying as she paused to tell me. Not the best place to shoot for multiple reasons. ou have to buy their ammo and it is very overpriced. $18/box for 9mm reloaded is ridiculous. The range is in no was regulated, we were flagged by multiple people who have no sense of responsible gun ownership. Their is no double door for the range, so I would recommend hearing protection when you first walk into the door for the establishment. Lastly, the target movers are very old and do not work well if at all. Overall, the condition of the place is mediocre at best. The only positive I can give is the staff was very friendly and helpful. However, I would recommend some other range. read more

I normally frequent Colonial Shooting for range time but decided to give Dominion a try. I've had several transfers come in and the staff is always friendly. I knew going in that you can't bring your own ammo but because I was shooting a .22LR, I didn't give it another thought. The range fee is cheap and I can support a local business. The lanes are pretty dark and equipment is old but the real kicker for me is the ammo prices. I received my bill and was charged $0.25 PER round (for cheap ass fed and AE). I had to laugh and I ask the guy if he was serious. I don't want to know what they charge for centerfire rounds. After reading other reviews, it sounds like they sell reloads. Fool me once, shame on me. I should have asked before proceeding. I will not be giving this business anymore of my time or money. I will deal with the douchey staff at colonial and not go broke enjoying my hobby. read more

Facility is outdated; dirty, dark, with broken lanes that don't function as they should. (my buddy and I tried using 3 lanes, two of which got stuck down-range and only 1 functioned as it should). There was NO RANGE OFFICER on site during our entire session, which I am sure gun-control nuts would love to exploit in regards to gun-owners/enthusiasts and how we take proper safety precautions. You are prohibited from bringing your own ammo, and customer service will treat you like crap even if you're unaware because they've hidden that clause ONLY in a page long waiver (and nowhere else), AND after you apologize politely. Side note to the staff: Don't tell me you're worried about your insurance policy when it comes to my brand new, store-bought, unopened, fairly priced 9mm ammo, when there's not a SINGLE range officer on an active shooting premises with at least 5 people on the range. Winding Brook in Ashland (or even Colonial Shooting Academy for that matter) far surpasses this range in every capacity, and I assuredly will not be coming back to this establishment ever again. Just some recommendations- Update your entire facility (fix your lanes and range lighting), take your proper safety precautions (HAVE AT LEAST ONE RANGE OFFICER ON SITE AT ALL TIMES), either put up a massive sign saying no personal ammo/lower your house ammunition prices or let patrons provide their own unopened ammunition (like your local competition does), and learn to accept an apology when someone makes a mistake. Maybe then you won't keep losing new customers. read more
