I'm sure most of you are feeling the loss since the epic Thai A Roy Dee closed, especially since we were led to believe it'd be back open by now. Well, that battle might have been lost but all isn't over, as this fabulous wee spot has sprung up in recent times. (I believe it's about 6 months old, or there abouts!)
Two friends and I had just been to the World Beneath The Woods at Leeds town hall, and having gotten a little tipsy on mulled wine in their pop up bar (I wish that was a permanent feature) we needed some post theatre eats. It's not exactly close, but we'd all heard this place had opened so decided to trek over.
The space is delightful -- at the time (not sure if it was for Christmas) it was lit largely by fairy lights, which felt wonderfully festive. There's also something about the wooden walls that made it feel warmer, cosier, and offered more escapism than most other Thai restaurants -- maybe because it feels like a hut? The staff are really friendly and we were seated straight away at one of the little tables. It's definitely more of a cafe than a restaurant, but that suits me fine -- so long as the food is good and authentic, I don't need flashy decor.
What's curious about ordering is that you sort of fill in a small survey-like sheet from a small set menu. They do have specials on each day if you want variation, but generally you can choose from green curry, pad thai, noodle soup, and other staples. (With a choice of meats or tofu.) The prices are ridiculously afforable -- as little as £4.50 per main if you take away!
We shared some delicious spring rolls and chicken satay to start, and then each chose our own dish (which we shared bits of) for mains. As per my usual for a first visit, I had green curry, and this was definitely special: beautifully fragrant and delicate with enough spice. Everything came out in good time and the service was spot on. I couldn't believe how cheap the bill was at the end too -- even with wine it was something like around £10-12 a head.
It's a fabulous spot and I highly recommend stopping by sometime. read more
