Who would had thought that some good BBQ can be found in the parking lot of a Chevron gas station? We went there on a Tuesday afternoon and happy to see it open to tryout their food. Note, there isn't much parking or places to sit to eat. We met Rome (owner of the food truck) and he had such a positive and passionate attitude as he described his dishes to try out. We went with the food sampler and a side of tacos. The food sampler included ribs, pulled pork, and a sausage link. Just top off the dishes per his suggestion as it adds a lot flavor and texture to the meats! The ribs were tasty and fell off the bones. Pulled pork and link was good too. He did also note that Saturdays has some specials happening. You get a Texas beef rib and possibly of getting his mac n cheese. With opening st noon, he noted he typically runs out around 2 PM. Note, each Saturday he does do a special side dish and if there is something you're interested in, you can call/text him on Wednesday for him to give it a shot to make the dish for Saturday purchase. Definitely would go back to try a Saturday meal!

What's up Yelpies You won't believe this place is just off the street next to Chevron on 72nd ... so slow down and look for it ... better yet open your car window and follow your nose to the ribs being smoked on site.... Yes from a food truck. The owner is definitely a chef ... just look at the presentation and the food portions. Not to mention the unexplainable flavor!!!! He's not just on to something... He is that guy that will make you smile with a great attitude and amazing food. Hats off buddy.., keep on smoking !!!!!!

We stopped by on a late Saturday afternoon just as the rain started and didn't see the truck until we pulled into the Chevron station at 72nd and 119th. Luckily, he was still open, but our two sampler plates sold him out for the day! Win-win, right? He told us that he's been there since the snow storm in January and we really hope he stays because he's right: there isn't a lot of good BBQ in the Vancouver / Portland area, but we'll bring our business here whenever we 're in the mood for delicious meat! Bring cash if you can. He doesn't charge customers to use credit cards, but it does cost him. He's a one man show in a little truck and it would be fantastic if he could expand. His food is super good. The ribs fall off the bone, the hot link has just enough kick and the pork has a lovely sweetness that complements the rest of the meats. He fancies things up but we just wanted to taste the BBQ. He only serves side dishes on Saturdays. Typically, it's mac n cheese (the sample he gave us was AMAZING) and one other side such as fried collard or black-eyed peas. If you text him ahead of time, you can request your favorite or find out what side he's serving that week.

And to be quite honest, the answer is kinda. No offense. But, is the name justified? And the only answer to that question is a definite YES. Last, the main question you are probably asking yourself is, should I eat there? And the answer to that, Sarah, is yes. You should definitely eat at this food cart. Let me tell you why. Taste of Soul gives you just that, a traditional soul food experience. But, just from the one meal I ordered on a dreary, cloudy Portland day, I had more than a taste of soul. I had a whole flavor reset happen to my palate. My world grew sunnier and brighter with an infinite amount of temporary taste happiness. The sweet tender taste of the catfish coated in a dusting of cornmeal and spices fried to perfection danced on my tongue as the accompanying sauce gave a zesty kick to the already flavor packed fresh fish fillets. The chunky fries were pillowy and perfect, potatoes partitioned to particular flavor packed pieces and promises of pleasant tastes. Also, nicely seasoned - totally worth upgrading the regular catfish order. I did have to wait a bit, but the owners were so nice to give me a free lemonade for my wait and they were generally very kind. You could tell they loved being there and cooking up some delicious food for everyone. How often do you hear Portland and soul in a single sentence? Come try this place out!

However, now that I've been a few times, I notice little details like "why do the hostesses continue to seat people right next to each other?". There are plenty of other open tables that people could be seated at, but it really eliminated our ability to have a connecting conversation, as it felt like we were a party of 6 with us 2 in the middle!!! And 2 of the people clearly had some personal "issues" going on and were very disruptive. The space is small, but the visual displays of all the artwork make it a talking point conversation. The main artist was on hand & we found ourselves with the opportunity to talk with him while we waited on our food (which took a lot longer than expected). Funny, we ordered 1st & ours came out 10 mins later after everyone else. I decided to go with the Chicken and Waffles, and we also had the shrimp and grits. The food hit on all cylinders, and the only thing that was needed next was to make a move for a cocktail and a little walking in downtown to change it up. Will definitely return, but I will be more direct and vocal about seating that's for sure.

The style I was trying to recreate was inspired by La Taqueria in San Francisco, a hugely popular and nationally recognized taqueria that has received major acclaim, including a James Beard Foundation America's Classics Award. They're especially famous for their distinctive burrito style: absolutely no rice, it takes away from the meat, just a simple flavorful filling, and the option to have the finished burrito made "Dorado style," where it's pressed on the flat-top until the tortilla gets golden, toasted, and crispy. That's the texture and flavor I was hoping for -- carne asada, refried beans, cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo, and that crispy grilled outside. Yours came really close to what I had in mind, and it tasted amazing. I really appreciate the care you put into making it, and I hope you can make it this same way again next time. Thank you!

8.5 /10 first experience…read more I usually don't divulge to PNW folks that I'm from CA lol but for this review it has to be known. Anyway Mexican food up here in the PNW is trash. It's not authentic by any means. I feel like they just cater to the demographic. I was in BG area and actually had cash on me so I pulled over to give them a try. This is the first spot that I've found to even be on the radar with back home quality. 1) they lightly toasted the the tortilla. 2) the meat was cut on the bias, thin, tender and full of flavor!! If they let it crisp up just a little more it would be next level. 3) they used real avocado slices not that nasty premade spread that has vinegar to preserve the color. Overall my burrito was delicious and it was filled great, equal beans/rice/meat ratio. Ps i ordered it without lettuce. I will absolutely be coming back to try tacos and other items. Review for salsas: I tried one of each (habanero, red and green). My favorite was the verde. It's the most flavorful. I usually like hot, hot, but won't compromise flavor. I would stick to the verde no matter what I order. I like that there's grassy patches. While I was waiting I was able to let my dog stretch her legs until the buzzer went off. The lady in the food truck was helpful and told me they have habanero as an option.
