So when my friend and I couldn't find each other and both insisted that we were at the Bellecour location, it took us a few minutes to realize there were actually two Bellecour locations. We decided to eat at this one since they had tables set up outside and it was a nice, sunny day. We sat down around 11:15 and the restaurant was not serving lunch yet so my friend ordered an espresso and I a tea. The tea was okay but nothing special and it cost almost 3€ which I should have expecting, seeing as how this is a tourist area. They finally started serving lunch around noon so I ordered the Italien Croque Maison which was mozarella, grana padano, tomato, aubergine, and fresh basil on a toasted whole wheat sandwich bread. My friend ordered the Chevre Wrap which was chevre, tomato, lettuce, black olive, and artichoke on a white flour wrap, toasted in a panini press. Both came with a side salad of fresh greens, sundried tomato, a tasty balsamic dressing, and topped with sesame and poppy seeds. I tasted both sandwiches and they were both yummy. The melted mozarella sandwich turned out to be a bit too heavy for a warm, sunny day though so I would definitely recommend the wrap if it's hot out. We really wanted smoothies with our lunch but this location doesn't serve them until April so we headed to the second location to try the Bonne Mine, an orange-flavored smoothie. I definitely don't think it was thick enough to be called a smoothie. It was more like a mix of fresh fruit juices. But it was very tasty! Also, at this other location, they had an easily accessible refrigerated to-go section so you could just grab a cold sandwich or wrap, plus whatever sides you want, like tabouli or a salad, and various desserts such as yogurt, fromage blanc, or tiramisu. I might try the to-go experience next time. I'm definitely glad to know this place exists, even if it wasn't absolutely amazing, because it's fast and fresh and somewhat more healthy than other fast food options in the area.

Oh, how I was wrong, since in Lyon good food is everywhere, and Garden State, centered at the heart of Place Bellecour offers just that. It is a great spot to have a quick or more relaxed lunch while gazing at the passers-by. The offer is of constant quality but of variable choice, so ask for the weekly specials. Most dishes are healthy, still being filling, and there are plenty of vegetarian options. I recommend you to take your time, and enjoy your meal in the sun, you're in Lyon after all!

Mine consisted of greens, radicchio, carrots, green beans, asparagus, tomatoes, scallions, chives, and something I couldn't identify that was flat, white, round, kind of tasted like water chestnuts, and had the consistency of a firm mozarella. (Anyone know what this is? Please enlighten me!) I would have asked but the waitstaff seemed a bit busy... Which brings me to the downsides. My husband and I had intended to sup at another restaurant that ended up being closed for congé annuel. We crossed the river, got caught in a rainstorm, and took refuge under an awning. When I realized we were close to Le Jardin de Berthe (which I keep hearing rave reviews about from vegans on facebook), I suggested we try it. We rolled in (literally - we were pushing a stroller), half-dripping wet and looking a bit confused at the layout of what I thought was going to be a casual cafe. The waitress who approached us asked if we had a reservation. (Oops, no we did not.) After some logistical discussion between three of the staff, they decided they could seat us. (Hooray!) Our waiter (thankfully not the girl, who was visibly frustrated that we A) did not have a reservation and B) were obviously not native French speakers) helped me carry the stroller down some steep steps and showed us to a table for two. It was against the wall and the only place to put the stroller was directly in front of the table, blocking the waiter from getting very close. I didn't see any highchairs and we weren't offered one so maybe this isn't the best place for kids. The waiter was nice enough but obviously in a bit of a hurry so we felt rushed. I don't know if it was because we had a baby in a stroller, because we didn't have a reservation, or both. (Or maybe it was just the self-consciousness of new parents adjusting to eating with a baby who makes noise? Lots of variables.) Anywho, I ordered the salad and my husband ordered a ravioli dish with cream and bacon and - seriously - a quarter of a wheel of what we think was reblochon. He couldn't finish his either because it was so heavy but he enjoyed it! The rest of the vegetarian menu was not very impressive but I suppose the fact that they have a vegetarian menu at all should impress me. (And it does!) Other options were the ravioli dish sans bacon, a soy "steak", and a veggie burger (which sounded like the soy "steak" on a bun with some veggies.) I definitely recommend the salad, as the vegetables were high quality, in season, and super tasty. The dressing was good too - not the usual yellow French dressing but something a little fancier. (It definitely included mustard though, as usual.) We'll probably go back (with a reservation) and give the waitstaff and the other items on the menu a second chance. I'll update my review then.

The vegetarian salad is delicious - lots of beets, asparagus, hearts of palm, carrots (done in that oh-so-delicious French style that I can never seem to replicate), and about every other kind of veggie you can imagine. Okay, this one actually is kind of salad-like. The ravioli salads, on the other hand, are just intense. Delicious, but crazy. Don't get one of those thinking you're being healthy...it just ain't happening. That being said, the salade sicilienne is freakin yummy. Ravioli, tomato sauce, bacon, AND a poached egg all on top of a huge salad. Yes, please! About 10 euros each, maybe a little more. I know it seems pricey for some greens, but these are worth it for sure. Go for lunch + go early - it gets super crowded, especially at dinner.

The other guy barely looked at or spoke to me at all, except to take my money. Neither of them smiled the whole time. It was not the most pleasant experience. I guess when you're eating a 4 euro meal in Lyon, this is the kind of service you can expect. In short, I would probably eat there again, but I would order "to go" next time so I wouldn't have to sit in their tiny eating area watching terrible music videos on their loud TV. Everyone we interacted with was really nice. Our French was minimal, but our server spoke great English. I got the daily special/plate of the day. To start with, it was a watermelon salad with ricotta cheese, toasted pine nuts, and balsamic. It was SO good and absolutely perfect for the hot day. My main dish was fish with a fresh salsa, pureed carrots (great flavor!!) and broccoli. All of it was amazing and something I would definitely order again!!
