A must-try when in Lyon!…read more What a cool restaurant in the heart of Lyon surrounded by many other fine establishments. This one stands out for its commitment to great service and outstanding sandwiches (tartines/toast) hot and cold. The decor here is beautiful with the stonework inside with quite a few tables as well as tables outside. Our server was outstanding, we ordered wine, cider, foie gras and egg salad tartines, and a couple of desserts. The toasts were excellent. The raspberry dessert was too mushy and the coconut dessert too dry. But we will be back for more tartines and to try their burgers.

Only one waitress spoke English, and she wasn't serving us - however she did explain about the different specials of the day. Our actual waiter was super nice and patient as we ordered and the food was amazing. We chose one tartine each (party of 3) and cut them into thirds so we could each sample everything. - Tomato burrata tartine with balsamic: very fresh, pretty much what you would expect from a tomato/mozz sandwich - The special that I ordered was pork with polenta and olives. It was amazing!!!!! - Croque Monsieur was also tasty - ham with tomato and cheese. We shared potatoes gratin and a bottle of wine. Really nice meal in a traditional Lyonnaise cafe. Cobblestone streets and adorable awnings - so picturesque!

And for dessert I had a piece of pear & almond tart - vegan and gluten free. It was all very good. My friend had a chickpea tajine that was a little spicy and served with couscous. It's more of a cafeteria than a restaurant but that's ok. But the food is after all just nice and nothing one couldn't make at home. It might deserve four stars for veggie-deprived France but for more vegetarian-friendly countries (i.e. anywhere but France) it's a bit disappointing, it misses the twist and some innovation. The prices range from around ten Euros for a big salad to nineteen for a set menu that includes starter, main and dessert, which I find a bit steep for what you get. So like my star dilemma, not sure if I'll go back despite everything that it has going for it.

We arrived for the late afternoon lunch and ordered the trout, granola, hummus, and 3 pastries that our waiter chose for us. The flavors were so bright and complimented each other perfectly. I loved the honey, pepitas, and chia seed in the granola yogurt bowl. The pastries were a chocolate and peanut butter cookie, apple turnover, and an almond/orange brioche. Each one of them was perfect. The hummus officially ruined all other hummus for me. Nothing will ever be as fresh. Don't skip this place when you're in Lyon!

You'd want more soy marinated eggs if it was possible to order them individually! The granola with fresh yogurt, fruit and honey was delectable. I wanted more it was so good. The coffees were perfect as we had some hit and miss during our stay overall in finding high quality, robust, coffee (which was not espresso). The hot chocolate is the real deal, rich chocolate that you add hot milk to to reduce the thick, creamy richness of it. So good. order it! I think they are known for their pastries so order a few brioche, rolls, etc. I wish I knew the french word for the roll we had as that was one of the best we've ever had.. sweet, but not too sweet, soft/airy, buttery with the outside having a nice crispy (flakey) texture. So good. Very affordable too. Wish we found this place earlier during the visit as I would have liked to come back a few times.

The price is also on the low-to-average end for any sit-down restaurant, which makes it a bargain in my opinion, especially for lunch. During non-meal hours, I'd spend 1-2 hours working over coffee, and the service was always courteous and friendly (the latter can be uncommon in France). They were always patient with my terrible french - the last time I was there, our server even complimented how much it had improved since the first time I'd come (I completely embarrassed myself by not knowing what she was saying =p) If you're in the neighbourhood, stop by Fauves for lunch, or even just a coffee. You will be pleased!

The food - They make everything in house. Nothing is refrigerated so everything is made fresh daily. The burger I got, the Classic Bacon Burger, is one of the, if not the best, burger I have had so far. Here's the kicker. While their burger is that good, the fries is probably one of the worst I've had. The fries were soggy and not crunchy, like what happens to potatoes when it's fried in oil that's not hot enough. It boiled in oil, not fried. Everything else is really good. Bun is good and not like "white bread" and mushy. Patty is good, not too thick, too juicy, not greasy, with good seasoning. The lettuce was green and crunchy. The onions we're caramelized well. The sauces were really nice and flavorful. Ketchup and mayo were even made in house. But those soggy fries... man. They just need to get some good crispy fries and it would have been a perfect meal. Otherwise, the burger is great. Five stars because of that. The Place - Typical of EU restaurants, it's small. The Service - It was good. Soggy fries came out pretty late in the meal. I was halfway through my burger before it came out. I think fries should come out with burger. It's like getting your sides halfway through eating your main meal. Overall, even with the soggy fries, I would still recommend going to Les Frangins for their burgers. I'd like to go back a few years from now to see them still there, hopefully have grown, and with crispy fries.
