This was our first stop in Lyon and I'm so glad we came. Everything is made fresh on site and you can tell immediately when the food arrives. We arrived for the late afternoon lunch and ordered the trout, granola, hummus, and 3 pastries that our waiter chose for us. The flavors were so bright and complimented each other perfectly. I loved the honey, pepitas, and chia seed in the granola yogurt bowl. The pastries were a chocolate and peanut butter cookie, apple turnover, and an almond/orange brioche. Each one of them was perfect. The hummus officially ruined all other hummus for me. Nothing will ever be as fresh. Don't skip this place when you're in Lyon! read more

Le Kitchen Cafe is a gem! Very cute restaurant with wonderful people and service. Came for breakfast and left delighted. The soy marinated egg and trout is fantastic. You'd want more soy marinated eggs if it was possible to order them individually! The granola with fresh yogurt, fruit and honey was delectable. I wanted more it was so good. The coffees were perfect as we had some hit and miss during our stay overall in finding high quality, robust, coffee (which was not espresso). The hot chocolate is the real deal, rich chocolate that you add hot milk to to reduce the thick, creamy richness of it. So good. order it! I think they are known for their pastries so order a few brioche, rolls, etc. I wish I knew the french word for the roll we had as that was one of the best we've ever had.. sweet, but not too sweet, soft/airy, buttery with the outside having a nice crispy (flakey) texture. So good. Very affordable too. Wish we found this place earlier during the visit as I would have liked to come back a few times. read more

This restaurant's service had gone down significantly. More specifically, the male waiter was rude and unyielding. His colleague forgot our main courses, and he, as her manager, did not apologize or offer any sort of compensation. Before today's visit, I would go out of my way to visit this restaurant because I find it charming and the food delicious. After today, I will find another establishment near me (which, in this city, there are plenty) who actually respect my time. The French aren't know for their service. I'm used to waiting for my dishes. However, waiting an hour between entree and main course, and then no gesture to make up for it, is beyond anything I've seen in this country. read more

Items Selected: Iced Espresso Warm Madelines Vanilla and Cherry Cake Pistachio Financier Chocolate Chip Cookie Said by some to offer the best coffee in the city, and open early for breakfast pastries on weekends, it was to tiny The Kitchen Cafe that I turned for a second breakfast during my final day in Lyon, and sitting down at a small table within the cozy confines where service proved exceptional the feeling was one of familiarity, a decidedly "American" vibe not unlike what one may find in the Pacific Northwest. Definitely a curated experience, the well culled menu befitting the limitations of a small kitchen focused more on quality than quantity of goods, breakfast at The Kitchen Cafe consists of just eight pastries plus granola alongside drinks and selecting a quartet plus an espresso over ice the results were across the board excellent, the creamy and rich coffee plus a pastry a veritable steal at 3€ while the rest added an a la carte cost ranging 1.50-2.0€ each. Notably arriving mere seconds after the 8h00 opening with every item still warm and some actually bordering on 'hot,' tasting began with two soft citrus madelines beneath a lightly browned top while the almond flour financier was a toothsome two-bites punched up by pistachios, both items strong on technique and as good as any experienced to this day. Trending less traditional with subsequent selections, suffice it to say that the cherry almond tranche de cake was so buttery that the phrase "pound cake" seems insufficient in describing its heft, and although one may think to pass on a 'simple' cookie amidst other temptations the crispy rim surrounding a puddle of melted dark chocolate was absolutely delightful, a bit of nuance and just a touch of sweetness added by smoky, caramelized nuts. read more

Fantastic - definitely stop in if you're in the city - you won't regret it!

This place is the Hendrix among rock stars. They dont do what everyone else is doing, but what they do is creative, unique, and simply incredible at its price point. My wife and I were able to visit this restaurant before the lunch hour started - which we appreciated. We both ordered the same dish - a fish with a white bean puree, a root vegetable, macadamias, and some light veggies. The flavors of this dish were meticulously balanced. The fish was cooked tender to perfection. We topped off dinner with desert - lime "mojito" custard/cake combo and a three way chocolate wafer with white chocolate ice cream. DO NOT skip desert here. Not only are their deserts a visual work of art, but the taste plays Mozart on your tongue. read more

I've been wondering for a while whether I should rate Le Kitchen Café or not. I feel bad giving them only three stars but here's why. I went there with my partner who loved everything about their food (hence three stars and not two) but I unfortunately had a bit of a negative experience being a vegetarian. After everyone was raving about them, I was really excited to try the restaurant. The fact that there was a week wait for a lunch reservation only added to the anticipation! We get there, nice table outside, waiter very friendly, everything fine. The menu is tiny, which is fine, I wasn't worried either that there was nothing vegetarian on it, usually there is something that can be done. I told the waiter that I'm a vegetarian, he needed to check with the kitchen and on his return he told me that there was nothing (nothing!) they could suggest because they couldn't accomodate people wanting to deviate from the standard menu without notice because of their tight calculations of the ingredients. To be fair, the waiter seemed to feel pretty bad. He told me I'd have to tell them in advance next time I make a reservation (next time?). This is supposed to be such a great place! I was a bit stunned but we decided to stay anyway. So I sat through two courses of the meal staring at my partner's plate (luckily, the delicious dessert was meat-free!). Probably the best part was that the starter (tomato salad with sprats according to the menu) was a few chunks of farm tomato (delicious) with a tiny little smoked sprat on the side... so they couldn't have made a bigger version of this for me, minus the sprat!!?? Anyway, first I thought I would go back and try again but everytime I think about that lunch, it annoys me that a restaurant that wants to do things differently, be innovative and supposedly please their customers, considers it OK to let someone sit through a meal in front of an empty plate. Brilliant. Best terrine I have had in France. Usually terrines are too dry and fatty to be superb. Le kitchen has the solution - serve with a side of home made pickles - they add just enough tartness and moisture to balance everything out perfectly. My second course was a salmon gravalax. Not only was it delicious, but it was originally served with dill, cucumber and...wait for it...sliced... Tart Apple! The desert was amazing, even by Lyon standards - a chocolate explosion of mouse, gingerbread crumble, ice cream and wafers and something buttery and wafey. Bill came to 21 euro for lunch for one! read more

Very disappointing place ! We had breakfast there, or tried to anyway, as I am pregnant and this place isn't pregnancy friendly at all !! They hadn't thought of a replacement, such as a simple yoghurt, for the "faisselle au lait cru" and they don't even have decaf !!! I finally went for a piece of cake and an orange juice but I found it quite expensive for what it is !! I was very disappointed !! read more
