This one stands out for its commitment to great service and outstanding sandwiches (tartines/toast) hot and cold. The decor here is beautiful with the stonework inside with quite a few tables as well as tables outside. Our server was outstanding, we ordered wine, cider, foie gras and egg salad tartines, and a couple of desserts. The toasts were excellent. The raspberry dessert was too mushy and the coconut dessert too dry. But we will be back for more tartines and to try their burgers. read more

One of my favorite meals in Lyon! Lyon is apparently known for their tartines and this place was perfect. Super quaint (albeit hot in mid-July because no A/C), and delicious. Only one waitress spoke English, and she wasn't serving us - however she did explain about the different specials of the day. Our actual waiter was super nice and patient as we ordered and the food was amazing. We chose one tartine each (party of 3) and cut them into thirds so we could each sample everything. - Tomato burrata tartine with balsamic: very fresh, pretty much what you would expect from a tomato/mozz sandwich - The special that I ordered was pork with polenta and olives. It was amazing!!!!! - Croque Monsieur was also tasty - ham with tomato and cheese. We shared potatoes gratin and a bottle of wine. Really nice meal in a traditional Lyonnaise cafe. A lovely place that specialises in tartines. A quick view from outside, this place seems like a tourist trap, with a lot of outdoor seating in idyllic alley, with waiters and waitresses standing outside trying to lure you in, but I dared to enter thanks to yelp review. Upon going in, you see that most of the tables are full, with cheerful locals, so you know that it's not a tourist trap after all. Their menu is limited mostly to tartines, cold and hot tartines, a couple of salad menu and soup of the day. It's not much, but I like places that specialise on something, then you know they'll be good. I got the warm tartine with 3 different cheese (mozarella, blue and goat) while the goat-fanatic boyfriend chose the one with only goat cheese on. We shared a bottle of rose together because it was still "summer-ish" outside. We had a lovely meal at almost no cost at all, definitely a recommended place for a quick lunch! read more

This restaurant was just around the corner from our AirBnB, and seemed to be crowded all day, so we figured it had to be good. We had 3 kinds of tartines: foie gras with caramelized onions (our favorite!), 3 cheese with pear, and the brie with honey and walnuts. All three were fantastic! Tartines, or open-faced sandwiches, are the thing you'll find at L'Epicerie. It has a tiny food menu (especially compared to its drink menu), with a selection of cold and hot tartines and salads/boards as well. I started with one of the chalkboard specials, the Tartine Alsacienne, which consisted of cooked leeks, mushrooms, and ham topped with cheese. The toppings were savory and creamy, while the brown bread on the bottom was nice and chewy and just slightly crispy from the oven. We also had the Tartine steak a cheval, which was a hamburger patty topped with a perfectly round runny egg over bread spread with caramelized onion, and served with tomato, pickles, salad, and potato chips. Finally, we had the large "Ocean" salad, which came with lettuce and tomato topped with smoked salmon, anchovies, and capers, and this salad came out just way too salty.. While everything on the menu here is relatively affordable (the regular size tartine is plenty--definitely no need to upgrade to the large size for a small party), the flavors were just ok, and the service could have been better as well. read more

Tucked away in a side alley off of a popular street packed with restaurants, this little cafe is an amazing find. The wine was excellent and quite moderately priced. Although, we did not partake in the cafe's famous tartines, every one we saw around us looked amazing. We had the cheese plate, as well as the charcuterie plate, and both were excellent. The cheese plate had a beautiful, creamy Brie; a gentle blue cheese; a light, soft, aged cheese; and brown bread with butter. The charcuterie plate had a very flavorful pate, salami, cornichons, and brown bread. There are no English menus, but the wait staff was very helpful with translation and recommendations. The ambience was interesting - Pink Floyd and Alabama music, interleaved with jazz, emanates from the small cafe. The restaurant is decorated with various antiques for a vintage feel. Sitting outside, there was a beautiful breeze blowing through the alley on a beautiful night. Would highly recommend this restaurant as a must-visit among the great food stops in Lyon. read more

Love this place in Lyon. It is relatively inexpensive and has very good food and atmosphere. Got the vegetable (leek) soup, and it was hitting the spot. The toasts were great too (burger and another beef toast). The plate came plentiful with chips and salad. The meat was cooked beautifully. One of my favorite places to eat in Lyon, and when I lived there, it was always where I brought my visiting guests. Décor charmant, tartines délicieuses... what more could you want? Tartines are basically giant pieces of toast with various toppings on them. The toppings on their regular tartines range anywhere from smoked salmon to honey & brie to chicken salad...my favorite special tartine I tried was a Mediterranean, with olive tapenade, sun dried tomatoes, and slices of chorizo. Their apple crumble made me (an avid anti-baked fruit activist) a believer. And as others have noted, they serve their desserts with jelly beans, which is a nice touch. Make your way off the beaten path when you come to visit Lyon, and scope out L'Epicerie. You won't regret it! read more

It's purely cultural, but I was not able to have breakfast until 'Environ 12 heures' today :-) , cause it opens as such on a Sunday, but was quite satisfied with the treat at L'Epicerie. I was greeted by the waiter who looked like one of the current well-known French actor that fills up the Hollywood screen whenever a French actor villain is needed; not particularly a photogenic one, but certainly leaves an impression. He quickly realized my language shortcomings and switched off to English. A kind gesture, but I made sure I didn't take the bait. A dimly lit cafe with a Hodge podge of table furniture from a going-out-of-business-elementary-school. The mismatch, rattle and squeaking of the tables, definitely added its charm. Had a tomatoe, pesto tartine with mozarella and cafe au la it. And it was good. I can't say no more. read more

Among these traps is this lovely little place that's run by a very enthusiastic Frenchman who is known to sing during lunch. They have a quick Oyster lunch, and many tartines, toast upon which they load chicken, fish, cheese or beef. Prices are very reasonable especially in comparison to the surrounding restaurants. Delicious food and a lot of fun. It was different food that continued to impress. We all tried a different tartine and loved it. The staff were super friendly and it was all around a blast to be in this restaurant. It seemed to always be busy. Outside they were serving oysters, which was awesome and made me wish I would have tried some. The desserts were hit or miss. Unfortunately the chocolate tartes were nothing to write home about. We tried to eat here around 5 pm. The place was busy but there were two free tables. We wanted one away from the door because of the cold and lack of room. The waitress got frustrated with us and threw the menus on the table.... The one by the door. We waited for 15 minutes for someone to wait on us. Finally left at that point. L'Epicerie is an absolute gem of a restaurant and was a major staple during the five months I lived in Lyon. Affectionately nicknamed "Tartine" by my friends and I, we primarily went to the one located in the 2ème arrondissement, a short walk from Bellecour. However a second location opened up while we were living there near Lyon 3, which was great too - especially after a long day at school. I easily stopped in two or three times a week, whether for a full dinner, a quick brunch or just a pot of tea after classes and was never disappointed. It's impossible to live abroad without occasionally being homesick and L'Epicerie became my home away from home. Although my friends and I could speak fairly advanced French we definitely weren't fluent and the servers were unbelievably patient with us, going above and beyond to help when we didn't understand ingredients in their constantly changing daily specials. One particularly funny exchange I remember was when we first realized they offered self-serve soup. The hand written label that day read "potiron" (but to us it looked more like "pot iron") and we went back and forth with our extremely good natured waiter asking what was in the iron pot while he kept insisting it was potiron soup - word to the wise, potiron means pumpkin in French. The food itself is basic (tartines = toasted bread with toppings on it) but the combinations of ingredients they offered always provided an interesting blend of tastes and textures. The sweet tartines were delicious too - I'd never though that buttered toast with jam and sugar could taste so good! As for the savory tartines, my all time favorite was the tomato pesto. While the food is really fantastic, a major part of the bistrot's draw is the atmosphere. Part old fashioned soda shop, part grandma's kitchen, part general store, and part old basement speakeasy, L'epicerie is incredibly warm. Old toys and boxes line the walls behind the bar and jars of hard candies, jelly beans and gummy candy rest on the counter in case you feel like filing up a bag of sweets before you go. An assortment of different chairs and tables fill the restaurant and a giant stone arch sets the bottom section of the restaurant apart from the top. That combined with the mismatched dishware and silverware and the constant bustle of the restaurant creates a really cozy effect. I would whole-heartedly recommend visiting L'epicerie if you ever find yourself in Lyon. It's been three years since I've left and my friends and I still reminisce about our Tartine days whenever we catch up. read more

I give this place my highest recommendation. The lowest cost-best food I've had in France so far. The onion soup is excellent. We had the three cheeses and croque monsieur tartines. They too are excellent. I would recommend getting the standard size over the extra large tartines, as the standards are quite substantial. My wife ordered a special of the day tartine, comprising the toast foundation topped with a mixture of potato and squash and a couple of pieces of grievously undercooked bacon. The beers helped. The desert offerings looked great and so we tried a couple of pie slices but they tasted a couple of days too old.
