Went because we were told it was Gluten Free friendly and because of the relationship with Chef Bourdain. Food was mediocre and was clearly not cooked to order. Our salmon came out within minutes of us ordering, so definitely was pre-plated. They tried to give us bottled water after I had asked for tap water. I said I was gluten free, but they never even offered my husband bread. And, the staff were not very nice. Don't bother - lots of other wonderful restaurants in Lyon who can make gluten free food and are welcoming to tourists. read more

This place haven't been updated for a super long time. The service is average and bit slow. Plus her English is very limited. The tables are all next to each other (during covid pandemic). The food is good but not impressive or maybe my expectations were too high. The veal's presentation was gorgeous but the pasta wasn't freshly made. The veal was super tender and juicy with lots of pork fat. My fish for the special menu was grilled nicely. The tomato sauce at bottom was swimming in oil like most dishes here. If presentation was the only factor in my rating I'd give this restaurant a five star rating. My first clue that this restaurant wasn't what it claims to be is they require a $10/person deposit to get a reservation. The food was mediocre at best but my husband who eats everything couldn't even eat his sausage dish. Four of our guests had the escargot appetizer and everyone said it lacked flavor. Another one in our party had the fish in a pastry with sauce and rice and it was inedible and the texture was beyond description. I had the salmon and it looked very good but again tasteless. I don't think their chef ever used any salt in any of our dishes. Just in case anyone thinks we're critical because of being Americans we went outside where we ran into a Belgium family who spoke to us and felt the same way. Our waiter did try to make it right by giving us a cut up waffle dessert for free. He was gracious and apologized but it wasn't his fault. FYI -I never write reviews but since we spent $350 for our meal and there are so many choices in Lyon I felt I had to spare others from the same experience. read more

There are several Brasserie Bocuse in the city (Nord, Sud, Est, Ouest). Le Nord is the first one that opened. It is situated in the city center and is specialised in traditional dishes from Lyon. It's an institution and has a nice brasserie feel with great service. A recommended place when in Lyon. And their "Foie de Veau à la Lyonnaise" is delicious! read more

Attitude at the door , why is that necessary. We wanted to eat at 2 pm but the host declared he closed at 2 pm , so why do you advertise you serve until 2 pm ? Should you say 1:55 pm ? Are we not in the service industry? Service: Got a recycled bread basket with a piece of bread already partially eaten . Food was ok but not up to the standards of Monsieur Paul . Leeks salad was ice cold and under seasoned. Oeuf en meurette , sad looking poached egg with a tail of egg whites .( please practice on poaching eggs ) Sauce tasted like left over bourguignon sauce . We got our main courses but had no silverware. Had to hunt for a waiter to bring silverware. The kidneys were ok , portion was really small , maybe 125 G ? Blanquette was ok , not very flavorful , seems like they used water instead of a stock , bowl of rice was crusty like it sat under the heat lamps too long . On the way out the chef was sitting at the counter so I started a conversation because I am in the industry and worked with Monsieur Paul 50 years ago, but then the guy at the door all of a sudden gave the chef the phone as he had a phone call. I graciously ended my conversation as it really looked like they didn't care and I was just some old chef wasting their time . I gave my business card to the chef but I'm sure it's in the landfill as I'm writing this review. By the way this the first review I've ever written in 50 years. I really wanted to love this! At the end of the day, the service - which I expected should be top notch based on the price point - knocked this down a star (and getting sick by the end of the meal took this down another .5). Tip: make a reservation and have fun learning about Chef Bucose in advance! Food: I enjoyed the saucisson starter and the salad lyonnaise. The salad had big pieces of lardons (yum!) and they even brought me fresh-baked gluten free bread. My partner enjoyed a flavorful beef tartar and hot frites; I had a few bites and was very impressed. The cons: despite requesting no croutons, my salad had a few (which is not okay for a gluten sensitivity!). I also left the meal not feeling well - can't say it was the food but certainly doesn't leave me excited to endorse them! Service: Meh. I prefer friendly and attentive servers; they were attentive, not so friendly. When we booked, the host sounded annoyed, and honestly, I didn't feel welcomed throughout much of the night. (Note: we're French speakers so had no language barriers.) When we informed the server about the gluten in the salad, he didn't really seem to care. Ate here last time when I was here in Lyon 2 years ago and it was awesome! Returned tonight with friends for our second to last night dinner. Food was as good as I remembered. Had escargot, served with lots of garlic, parsley and butter. Delicieux! Main plat was escalope de veal--veal scaloppini served with macaroni gratinee. My companions loved what they ordered too--a chicken in cream sauce, boeuf roti topped with seared foie gras and calf's liver. We all loved our food. Enjoyed a great St. Joseph (northern Rhône-Syrah) which wasn't at all expensive. Such a rich dinner we couldn't even think about dessert. Only negative was the service. Yes, they were busy, it given that this is a Paul Bocuse restaurant, I'm sure they are busy every night. Yet we didn't get much attention, having to struggle to get more water or plates cleared. And they forgot the potatoes that were supposed to come with my husband's dinner. Will I return next time I'm in Lyon? I may decide to try somewhere new in this gastronomic capital. Amazing place! You can call for reservations in advance although it is a very big restaurant that can hold a lot of people. It is pretty big by European standards. Really good service and the decor is lovely. It reminded me of a French bistro back in America. It was very different from the Lyon bouchon decor I had a few nights prior. I was told a typical bouchon is very tight and crowded. Le Nord was pretty spacious and not cramped at all. Good place to try Lyonnaise food at its best. Get the quelle (Fish dumplings) or saucisson (either in a brioche as an appetizer or by itself as an entree). The desserts were amazing and my boyfriend loved his pork dish entree. See pic. Will definately recommend this place to all my family and friends. Lyon is a great city and I can't wait to return to eat more. Came here because of chef Paul Bocuse. Lyon is his home city. It's just one of many eateries that carries his name in the menu. I also wanted to try this restaurant because it served traditional Lyonnaise food, which I found to be very different from Paris cuisine. The restaurant is very large. It has an upstairs and a downstairs, but it seems only downstairs is open during lunch. We made sure that we made a reservation before we got here. But the place is so big, I can't see why they wouldn't take walk ins. The service was typical French service. Professional, but we waited and waited. It just was very busy for lunch. Our server, even though busy, had a smile on her face. The food was interesting. I had a sort of a pigs in a blanket as an appetizer (saucission chaud en brioche). The texture of the sausage was a lot hardier and tougher. It had a bite and chew to it. The flavors were just right. My wife had a gateau de fois de volailles. She didn't enjoy the taste. It had a soft mousse consistency. For my main, I got pork ckop with roasted potatoes and mushroom with squash. The sauce made the dish. I think in French cooking, it's often the sauce that makes the dish. My wife got the baked fish with a beautiful cream the sauce. I really enjoyed her dish as well. Again, it was sauce that highlighted the fish. I wish that I had room to have dessert. The food is extremely rich with butter and cream so an appetizer and main usually is more than sufficient. read more

I was a little nervous reading some of the other reviews on Yelp after making a reservation here. I watch as much Top Chef and Anthony Bourdain like show as anyone else so I understood the caliber of the name attached to the restaurant ... and it did not disappoint. Started with the Apertif Madison which was great and my first Salade Lyonnaise which was even better then advertised. My wife had the filet de bouef and proclaimed it the best she has ever had. We also really enjoyed the wine. The service was very good and friendly as well - no problems with language barrier (maybe it helped that I asked the maitre'd if he spoke English early on). After a lot of meals outside and to-go the past week in Lyon it was a pleasure to eat a nice meal inside in a somewhat formal setting! read more

We were thrilled to go to a Paul Bocuse restaurant while in Lyon and to have some of the classic dishes from the area. Pricing is very reasonable, starting at 23ish Euros for 2 courses. I had their Lyonnaise sausage, which is a sausage wrapped in bread and served as a slice, and a lovely white fish baked with veggies. Had a chance to sample their mac and cheese and another sausage dish that hubby ordered. Lava cake was a nice way to end the meal - perfectly done. Overall, a great way to try some Lyonnaise cuisine! Star taken off for service - similar to many other restaurants in France, the service is not particularly attentive. This was worse than others, e.g. forgetting water, putting a candle near a baby, replacement cutlery, etc. Still a nice way to spend an evening. read more

But the quenelle was too formed and grainy, not fluffy and consistent. The blanc and black mousse was too over designed and too sugary, not smooth. My husbands food was better - brioche with sausage, classic tartar, potato wedges, he liked it all just fine. The place is busy. The food is amazing and the service is lovely. We ordered a la carte. Very different to the informal 'bouchons', the Brasserie Le Nord is typically French nonetheless. Service is really good but not with the friendly informality of the bistro; rather, it is a joy to watch the careful choreography of the busy staff. Surroundings are dominated by dark wood and polished brass, with white table linen. Since it is owned by legendary chef Paul Bocuse, it is no surprise that the food at Le Nord is excellent. Typical brasserie dishes and some Lyon specialities, they are not fussy but are beautifully cooked. Prices are at the higher end for this type of meal, but not excessive. This restaurant was recommended by a chef in US. What a disappointment! Aside from poor service, the food was so sub-par for even the US and Lyon is KNOWN for it's food. Tough duck I had to spit out because I just couldn't chew it. Oil, oil and more oil on the plate. (I bet it was at least a cup!) Ducj was accompanied by a dish I can't recall the name of but it was shredded zucchini made like hash browns... also smothered in oil. While on our vacation to France, knowing that Lyon is a capital for cuisine in the country, we decided to have a 'nice' dinner in Lyon. Knowing who Paul Bocuse was led us to pick this restaurant due to the fact that out of the four Bocuse brasseries it has the most traditional French menu. The decor is exactly what I would have expected from a traditional Parisian brasserie with an experience that was second to none. Over the course of our two weeks in France this summer we have come to really appreciate the service. Everyone knows his or her role and service is polite and efficient. The cuisine was where the restaurant really shined. My wife and I both got the fixed menu. For the first course I had a cold lentil salad with barely poached egg. It was good but not at all what I was expecting. My wife really enjoyed her brioche encased pistachio sausage. We both had the beef carpaccio for our second courses. Everything was fantastic. The beef was well seasoned and the potatoes on the side were crispy and delicious. For dessert my wife had waffles and I had the best fromage blanc I had eaten until then and since. The theme was simple food, perfectly executed which is not easy. If we happen to be in Lyon again, we will dine at a Paul Bocuse establishment. read more

Didn't realize until after we arrived that this was a sister restaurant to L'Est. The food, atmosphere and service were fantastic. I don't generally opt for fixed menu but choose this the other night. Friend had the steak and I had the fish which were both perfectly done. I was looking for good Lyonnais cooking, and got it here! I wasn't into the traditional Bouchon scene, but instead had their macaroni and cheese, with a salade Lyonnais and a beer. On a hot summer day, with great service, they kept the water coming by the carafe, and didn't stint on the bread or good humor (when I was trying to speak French- which isn't bad.) Anyway, I can't think of anything else to say than this was the best meal I had on vacation in France. The room is very nice, and so were the people. What not to like? Then I had pike quenelle with miniature mushrooms, spinach in lobster sauce, which was delicious: this is a regional dish. This was followed by vacharine - formidable: a mixture of sweet and sharp. 3 scoops of ice team with meringue, whipped cream, very sharp red jus,topped with seasonal fruit. Worth the money though. My husband and I visited Le Nord for dinner last night--it is just as good as everyone says! For appetizer, I ordered the onion soup and my husband ordered the sausage brioche. We ended up sharing and could not decide which was better! For dinner, I ordered the fried scallops with tarragon risotto and my husband ordered the steak with herbs. My dish, particularly the risotto, was outstanding. It was one of the best meals of my life. My husband's steak was also quite good, but paled in comparison to my entree--for it was a little too heavy in the herb department for my taste, but outstanding, overall. For dessert, we ordered the sugar waffles with chocolate and whipped cream. It was huge, but quite good! It reminded us of a Belgian waffle. I agree with previous reviewers, I wouldn't mind returning but didn't think the food was above average. The highlight of my meal was the apple and rhubarb pie with a dollop of whipped cream and a speckling of raspberry syrup. It was one a pie that I didn't need to pair coffee with, tart and just perfectly sweetened with a thin layer of custard at the top. Neck and neck with the pie was the cod entree, having heard the NPR report on fish mis-identification among restauranteurs (or their suppliers), I wasn't expecting much. But this cod tasted like a Chilean seabass, tender and fatty, it was perfect. It was unfortunately, paired with a pacherri pasta that was just a ton of carbs with little to no sauce. read more

Ok a little bit of introduction: as (I hope) many of you know, this is one of the 4 "low-budget" restaurants owned by Chef Paul Bocuse, probably the most famous REAL chef in the world (Yes, you know what I'm referring to by that real, a person who actually IS in his restaurants and not doing TV shows..). One per cardinal point, spread all over Lyon, serving a short range of dishes (as it should be, only chineses can have 15+ things in the menu) in a stylish environment. Furthermore, every restaurant is a bit different, in particular this is more resembling the 1910 café parisien, all based on red, golden and mirrors. The service is what you can expect from a medium-high class restaurant, even a bit too high for the food you are eating (I'm not speaking about quality but about elaboration). That's absolutely nice, you easily feel comfortable but still classy. Now, to the most important thing, the food. We're not going out from tradition here, nothing creative nothing experimental: just solid, classical french cuisine, refined and treated in details. And the result is just perfect, and that's said from a guy who loves experimental cuisine. But somehow you find that dish, that restaurant which makes you think "hey, that's not boring after all!". And that is! i mean, my lovely lady took a grilled fish mix. On the menu, that is, simple: take some fishes, clean them, put them on a grill, wait a bit and served. Very lame, very boring, just based on the quality of the fish. Here it's different: every single fish is treated as the main ingredient, perfectly seasoned. More overall, every single fish serves its purpose, from the fatter to the more flavored, in order to give you a real tour Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea! (Am I becoming too romantic? I want to be fair as I write this review and not let the HORRIBLE service and our waiter's aloof dismissive attitude color the entire review. Food was decent-not anything to freak over though. I asked for a glass of wine with dinner and a server said he would tell our waiter who never came by once to check during our meal. Unacceptable for this kind of restaurant. I'm not sure why most of the French think they are above being nice to people who patronize their businesses. I'm so over the "I'm French so it's okay to act this way" thing. Simple. Almost too simple. I had a lentil soup which was quite good but mostly lentils and cabbage, duck fillets with boiled carrots (boiled?) and mashed moratorium with lots of butter. I was expecting a bit more complexity but the duck was quite well cooked. The dessert was a star performer, a dome of chestnut cream, home style vanilla ice cream. We are in Lyon and wanted to experience a Paul Bocuse restaurant. Le Nord was chosen for the type of cuisine. Perhaps our expectation was too high. What a disappointment! The snails were not 'fresh', the flesh tasted like and the texture were of the 'canned' variety. The Veal Head stew (Chef's specialty) was ok but seriously under-seasoned. The only dish that's better than acceptable was the veal liver. To make the experience even worse, service was very confused at best. We were prepared for it being slow (based on other reviews), but not the inefficiently. The wait staff did not recognized the dishes being served, and difficulties in knowing for whom the dish should be served. When placing cutlery, one staff held a knife by the end of the blade to put it down on the table (where's the health regulation training? Tea was served without a spoon even though sugar and cream were in the order. Perhaps the restaurant is resting on the Lau real of its late owner, but it's definitely NOT an experience he would have wanted his guests to remember. read more

Having had a great experience at Paul Bocuse's Le Sud, we thought this would be a great experience as well. Sadly this was one of the most miserable experiences we have had. Our waitress ignored our table consistently - we had to constantly flag her to get anything. The food did not arrive for over an hour and arrived only when we asked for it. They made an excuse that it was not cooked right and they had to redo. We could not wait to get out of there. Food was so so as well. The Maitre d tried to correct the situation by taking care of the bill. We appreciate it but will never go back there again. read more

We visited Le Nord upon the recommendation of our landlord in Lyon. It was wonderful, with great, but unobtrusive service, a good wine (we purchased a "pot" of a Cote de Rhone, which is about 4 glasses of a house wine). I had a delicious veal with the "macaroni and cheese" on the side, which was to die for. My husband loves lamb chops and he thought these were perfect. We both had dessert...I had the waffles with cream and chocolate, and he had the Mont Blanc, which consisted of meringue, whipped cream and chestnut cream. He loved it. I saw someone else eating a plate of small scoops of ice cream, which also looked delicious. The cost of our meal was € 97, which we felt was very reasonable. read more
