But If they could arrange time better instead of letting people waiting for that long even if reserved ahead, it would be much better. I was recommended to go here to have my battery checked after getting a jump, while I was at work. Macon is quite polite and personable. I told him my coworker's name and he immediately knew who I was talking about. He asked if I wanted to run a diagnostic test, I asked if it was at a cost, he was up front and honest that there would be a charge. It didn't take terribly long (2 hours) to check everything and told me about the pricing during the time. It was reasonable. They have snacks like chips, trailmix, and candy along with sodas and waters for guests to have, free wifi and a clean public restroom. I was in need of a last minute car inspection and My Mechanic was one of the highest rated options I could find. The reviews were spot on and I am super satisfied with my service as they came through for me in a pinch. I was able to easily book an appointment by giving them a call and they were able to accommodate me during the same week. I was initially going to see if I could do it online, but their website looks like something from the early 90s (#1). The manager, Macon, was cordial and super friendly. I showed up during my appointment and dropped my keys off to the front desk while I had my vehicle parked on the side. There aren't many car ports (2-3?) so they can only handle so many folks at once. The building is reminiscent of those car wash (self wash) around town. Parking is extremely limited. $25 and 2 hours later, my car was ready. Been coming to My Mechanic for years (see my past 5 star reviews!), but I'm really bummed they won't be my go-to anymore. One of the guys, Peter, retired-- and the new management has been giving a totally different vibe and service. I came with my car for its usual state inspection and Tyler (a new face at the desk) recommended a battery change before the inspection even started. He said my car had 120k miles on it, and I said that's unlikely, because my odometer had less than 65k. He went to check my odometer himself and then apologized for the error. And that's fine, as there may have been some desk filing error. While I was waiting for the service, he came up to me and said that my car needed a battery change and a new coolant system. He said the coolant was pretty much empty and that it was very dangerous to drive around without any. My car never had any warning lights, and when I asked him what causes low coolant levels, none of them applied to me (got a very low mileage car driven with care). The cost to replace? A cool $300+. The battery? $200+. Since apparently they couldn't do the state inspection without the battery change, I went ahead with that. But afterwards, Tyler said he couldn't pass my car because they changed the battery today and that I'd have to come back the next week to do it again. Is that a thing? None of my car friends have heard of that, but although frustrating, I agreed to come back. The next week, I came back, and the car's OBD port apparently didn't work. It was fine the week before, but now they wanted to run diagnostics that would be $$$. Mind you, the reason I came to My Mechanic initially was because my dealership had said the same exact thing (can't do state inspection because OBD port doesn't work, have to charge you $$ for a diagnostic), and I was then thrilled to find a place that seemed honest and actually care for cars and people. I took the car elsewhere to another shop, and lo and behold, no issues-- got a pass on the inspection. I asked this other place about my situation with My Mechanic, and they've never heard of the OBD not working from a battery change and having to redo the state inspection. And that coolant issue? When I said I'd hold off on that, Tyler said just keep an eye on any warning lights and there shouldn't be any issues. Although Tyler wasn't that pushy, the flip from "extremely dangerous to drive" without replacement to "don't worry about it" when I declined really turned me off. I got a second opinion a little further away, and while the coolant container was dirty, I got it replaced and refilled for less than 1/3 the price. Without Peter, I can't say James and Tyler are providing the same type of customer-forward service that gave me that warm fuzzy feeling. They've updated their waiting room with new sofas, but that won't keep me from looking for somewhere new. While My Mechanic was a very convenient location, I won't be going back because I've got trust issues and I want better care for my car and money. I also have a feeling that if you're a girl, you may want to bring a guy friend with you so you're not being taken advantage of, just a note. (I'm also a little suspicious of the recent 5 star reviews written by Yelp users with only 1-2 reviews and no profile photo of friends.) read more

DO NOT GO THERE!! I went there because of the good reviews, but I wish I hadn't! First they made a quote for services and the prices were absurd! I asked to do just the AC recharge (hot Texas summer), and they charged me $750 saying they had to replace a couple of things, fine. Three weeks later my ac wasn't working anymore, went back there and they recharged it for more $200!! AFTER the service was done, they said that my ac was after market one and probably would stop working again soon... WHAT??? Like, they didn't see that the first time that they "changed" things and charged me $750??? So disappointing when people try to take advantage of others. Ohh! And the quote for everything that I needed to fix was around $7500, I went to another mechanic and he charged me $3500 for the same things! read more

I have brought my car and my wife's car to these guys many times in the last few years. They are straight shooters and will not oversell you on stuff you don't need. I have only had good experiences here ranging from major engine work to windows and tires. They seem like a fair value especially comparing to dealership. Really stand up place. read more

Went for a state inspection, they tried to fleece me. Stay away. I've been going here for years for state inspections, and this place used to be good with fast in and out inspections. Now, it's "at least an hour". Turns out the reason it takes so long is they give your car the once over to try to scare you and sell maintenance your car doesn't need (and isn't part of the state inspection.) Just one example from my visit: they said it was "critical" to change my engine coolant. Too bad they didn't know I recently had the coolant changed at the dealer and coolant lasts 3 to 5 years. These guys are off my list for state inspections or anything else. No ethical standards. Completely agree with the other reviews that the new management took this place down the drain. read more

Been going here awhile now and these guys always take the best care of our cars. This is my second Cadillac and because of these guys I've gotten a lot of mileage from the first, and hope the same for the the second. My wife's car is even in their care, she had a hard time trusting in the beginning and feeling like she was taken advantage of until these guys reassured her and explained why and how...etc. Now she trust only these guys with her vehicle and plus their prices are very reasonable along with great customer service. This place is fantastic - knowledgeable, helpful and honest. I had ongoing issues with battery over 2 weeks. AAA had been out 3 times and said battery (it was their battery) was good, it must be something else. I took it in to My mechanic for diagnosis, the battery was in such poor shape that the tests could not even be run. It's a pretty old car, so I didn't want to spend a lot if it was headed for scrap. My mechanic helped with AAA, pointing out that their "good battery" test wasn't being performed correctly and the battery was replaced under warranty. All along My mechanic called with updates on diagnosis, cost and options. I recommend them highly. read more

They are always on time for discussing any issues related to my car and providing the best services possible under any circumstance. I had several unexpected issues with my car, such as a flat tire on the way to work, which significantly impacted my working schedule. My Mechanic is always there for answering questions, scheduling time for repair as soon as possible, and providing the advice for the best and most economic way to fix the problems. I needed a lot of work done on my 2001 Toyota Tacoma and the dealer wanted - well let's just say they seemed to be trying to get me to buy a new vehicle. The staff at My Mechanic were very thorough, and honest with me about what needed to be done. The bill came in LESS than their estimate because they thought they might need to do some things, but when they took my truck apart found out I didn't need those things replaced. It was also WAY less expensive than the dealer estimate - by more than half. Very reasonable prices, very conscientious staff, great warranty. My Mechanic on Holcombe has been repairing my family's vehicles since 2009, and I'm impressed that they still have the same personnel since 2009, so at this point we know them and they know us. Peter and Macon are very friendly, professional, and knowledgable. They have patiently answered the questions of the four drivers in our family, and they have done everything from fixing our vehicles after wrecks to safety inspections and oil changes. We feel like they are honest with us, and we feel like they do not take advantage of our ignorance. We think that their customer service is awesome. We also like that they accept appointments, which helps minimize time waiting around in the office waiting room. Also, our vehicles are logged into their system, so they keep track of what has and has not been done on our vehicles, and are more familiar with our vehicles at this point than we are. Was traveling coast to coast from NJ to CA. And stopped in Houston when check engine light came on. The valet at the hotel recommended this spot so I drove over. Peter greeted me enthusiastically and seemed to really love this business. Said he couldn't perform a full diagnostic as they were so busy with appointment but would run a quick check as a courtesy. He found my oil to be low and topped me off. Engine light remained off. If I lived in Houston this is the mechanic shop I'd go to. Peter is a good guy. They are scammers and take advantage of uneducated customers. I was quoted $2.5 thousand for A/C work after they claimed all the valves and multiple hoses needed to be replaced because of a leak that corroded them. When I took my vehicle to my hometown mechanic I was quoted $400 for all of the work plus extras like tire alignment which I didn't request from My Mechanic. One single part that My Mechanic would've ordered would've cost almost the same as my entire local mechanic bill to fix everything. They are dishonest and don't deserve anyone's business. Make an honest living or let someone else take your place. read more

I saw reviews that MyMechanic was overpriced, but they saved me over $400 from what I had been quoted elsewhere when I needed my oxygen sensor replaced. The mechanics were also willing to stay late to finish repairs so that I didn't have to leave my car there over night. I made sure to return when I needed my state inspection done and was pleased again. They have online coupons that keep it cheap, and it's super convenient since you can make an appointment. I will definitely keep giving them business for oil changes and those unfortunate times when I need repair work done. read more

I've only had an experience trying to get a state inspection here; I didn't find much info on Yelp about auto state inspections around here so I figured this review might be helpful to someone. I brought my car at around 3pm on a Friday hoping to get in and out quickly but there was a huge wait (the person behind the counter said at least 2-3 hrs) and they also don't let you use the check-in offer of $10 off on an inspection, so it would cost you $40 total. If you make an appointment ahead of time it takes 30 min. Anyway, I was bummed I couldn't use my check-in offer. The employee was polite about it, though. I ended up walking next door to the Shell at Kirby/Holcombe and got it done there in less than 20 min for $35. read more

Manager has bad manners, ripped us off, charged us and send home with the problem not fixed, did not apologize or give discount for this but made inconvenience for us to pick up a 'paid for' car repair for the second time! Now when i brought it back and another adjacent part was not working - i couldn't not believe 'not me' attitude - i did not touch and work on this! I don't work for free... Wow! Wish I would have found MyMechanic years ago. The manager (maybe owner) was the one who helped us. He explained the upfront charge (which was minimal) and had a diagnostic in about twenty minutes. Left the. Car overnight bc he needed a part and we came near closing and it was ready by 11 am next morning. Love that he explained the problem in detail and what steps they were taking to fix it. I don't know a ton about cars, I read my manual and get confused. I literally dread my oil change light coming in because it can be so costly needing a full synthetic oil change. Peter (sorry if this is wrong) went above and beyond to call around and get me a filter that would lower the cost of my oil change. I don't think I've ever received better service in my life, in any industry. That effort to make my life a little easier meant so much to me. As long as I'm in the inner loop, this will be my go to place from that interaction alone. I know I'll be taken care of and so will you. I tried sending a calm letter to the heads of the company.. since I really wanted to let them know how what I thought was a great company has escaped it's values.. but they ignored me. Then I emailed them and they ignored that. I figured that 60 visits would be worth at least a canned response.. guess not. - My car has 87,000 miles on it. It is the first car I have ever purchased and I'm proud to own it! I continuously brought it to My Mechanic. I understood them to be a company that charges premium prices but the customer gets loyalty. I used to tell my friends "They charge a lot, but they don't rip you off". I felt that way forever. Today I got some information that makes me think the company got away from it's values... or just made a big mistake. Basically they charged me several times for a lightbulb when my car was repeatedly melting it. The last time I went there I paid an expensive fee to fix the wiring to resolve the melting lightbulb problem. I was told it would work, then it did work. Today they told me I need another lightbulb. They didn't manage that it got "melted" again until I asked. They also let me know that I had 18 month warranties on the bulb... and they honored that only today.. not the previous times. When I asked about why they didn't use my warranty on the previous bulbs, they told me it's because my car was melting it. So I asked why they kept on letting me get new ones, melting the bulb, and then charging me for new ones, and then on MELT #3, they told me to do major work to avoid it... then they quietly tried to sell me a bulb today. Also today, although they "courteously" didn't charge me for the bulb, the price I paid was $78 for oil change plus state inspection and really confusing costs. $78 is kind of high for an oil change and inspection isn't it? I don't know. But this light bulb thing cost me about 4 visits, many hours, and just stress. I had to keep on driving on the road with one light, and it would always burn out. Today the manager admitted he didn't know what's causing it. I told him I just wish he told me that months ago and saved me money and hassle instead of confidently giving me false hope and taking my money. But overall, I expected better from them. I've been there about 60 times, and they are a company that sells themselves on the angle that they OPENLY charge you more because they are honest. I think they actually used my trust for them against me to get more money out of me.. or maybe they just gave me average treatment. Maybe I had a false sense of entitlement and I was naive. I did send some letters to the presidents telling them that I believe their values have escaped them and it really is just kind of depressing.. And I am honestly kind of saddened by today. Call me an idealist, but their company really made me felt good about the business world, that there can be honest businesses that do well. By posting this, it is kind of my official declaration that I won't go back there (since of course I can't bring my car back there now). Originally I thought the manager I knew longest was rally honest.. now I think he's a good guy that is just in a really tough job where there is no way to be 100% honest... it's a hard job with many things to imbalance. read more

Took my car in after it started making a noise upon acceleration and the check engine light came on. They said it was carbon buildup in the fuel system and that the ELD needed to be replaced. I needed it fixed, so I okayed it. About $550. I should have checked into it myself first. Car people I know and forums I've checked have said the fuel system service is a ripoff that is rarely ever needed. Also, the ELD is a quick fix and a $30 part. I get my car after the initial fix, it is still making the same noise that I brought it in for. I was told that t Now I'm told that it's in the manifold and that I can get that for around $800 if I want to, but that the car will run ok without the fix. I decline. Two days later, check engine light is back on. This time I'm told that it's a leak that wasn't there 2 days ago when they ran diagnostics and that the fix will be 300 something. Bottom line, I came in to get an engine sound fixed and get whatever was making the check engine light come on resolved. I spent $550, and neither thing is fixed. Part of the blame is on me, I should have checked into things myself. But man, do I miss my mechanic back home. read more

Just an FYI - I've been going to this shop for a couple of years, and like their attitude and the work they've done. HOWEVER - took one of our cars in because the tranny was slipping, and got an estimate for a transmission rebuild of $3200. Shopped it around, and the average price elsewhere was $1800. I ended up just trading it for a new car instead, but still.... Also, recently had some other work done, and found out yesterday that the $1100 I gave them would have been around $400 elsewhere. So, after a slightly ominious change in tone from my Mazda 3's engine the Check Engine Light came on. Extending my hypochondria to my car I set out to take it to a mechanic as soon as I could, lest it like blow up or something. I dunno, I'm not really a car guy. Anyway, I took my car in on a Friday and the manager assured me that they'd be able to get to work on it Saturday. I dreaded the phonecall that would inform me exactly how many hundreds of dollars I'd have to spend on repairs. Instead, I was told that the tech was off that day and they wouldn't be able to look at it at all, aside from reading the diagnostic code. Now, I realize this doesn't sound that bad but the manager on the phone, a different one from Friday, became openly hostile when I asked about their rental car policy and whether or not they knew the tech would be out when I dropped off my car that Friday. Apparently I was horribly misinformed for assuming that they provided a rental free of charge...even though they had done so a couple of times for my girlfriend just a few weeks ago. And when I inquired about the tech, I was told, "Sir! You do not give me the third degree! You can come pick your car up right now if you're going to act like this." He was also adamant in refusing to provide prospective quotes based on the possible problems that the error code turned up. It's my fault for choosing this place though. I mean, they did try to perform some work on my girlfriend's car that she'd had done the week before. In my defense, they're being open on Saturday and what I had assumed was standard policy with regards to rentals outweighed the fear that I'd get screwed over. To wrap things up, I did go ahead and grab my car, with no work performed. The manager was at least decent enough to not charge me for plugging in the diagnostic computer and berating me on the phone. Came here for a Saturday morning oil change - I even made an appointment using their handy online portal, just in case they were busy. The change itself was decently fast, not as fast as my normal go-to where it's more like "wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am, 5 minutes and you're out" but was only there for maybe 20-25 minutes. I whiled away the time in their clean, comfy, A/C'd waiting room watching Harry Potter (they picked up some bonus points for having this on). One very minor complaint: They didn't reset my "maintenance required" light in my car! This means I have to take a whole 30 seconds to google how to do it myself. Talk about first world problems. Through no fault of their own, my first oil change with my new hybrid was at My Mechanic, and My Mechanic got to tell me about how my new car only takes very expensive synthetic oil changes. Holy sticker shock! They did patiently take some time to explain ways I could and could not make it cheaper for myself (spoiler alert: not a lot of ways). Good things they did by virtue of NOT doing something: 1) Didn't try to sell me on service upgrades, 2) Didn't try to tell me other things wrong with my car, 3) Didn't make me feel judged for being a woman in a mechanic shop. All in all, I will be shopping around due to the new high price of my synthetic-only change, but My Mechanic will definitely get a second look from me thanks to the good service I received. read more

We visited it a while ago. The main purpose our visit there was about an inspection for a used SUV (we later bought a new one). When we stayed there, we happened to ask them about fixing a small problem on our 10-year old car (Honda Accord). The "mechanism" holding the trunk of our Honda stopped working and apparently a metal "stick" holding it broke. The tech showed me the broken piece (a metal "stick" about couple of inches long) and we agreed to get a new one installed. They said that they had to order it from Honda. However, about 20 mins later, they said that they had got the "stick" from Honda (a mystery for me) and wanted to go ahead to fix it. We agreed. After the fix, it was able to partially hold the trunk, but the trunk fell down if we shook it a little bit, which was wrong. We asked the tech about this and he said that it was OK. But we know it was not. We were on our way to work and were already late, so we had to leave for that day. We never really re-visited the shop (our fault). But the situation got so bad in the last couple of months, the trunk hit us several times when we put in/got out stuff from it. We stopped by our nearby gas station for state inspection and by another party for oil changes. In both cases, we asked about the trunk. Both parties told us that the "stick" was installed to the WRONG direction; that is why it did not work properly and things got worse over time. One party even asked us about the missing cover cloth around that area and until at that time, I realized that it was removed but never installed (although I did not have proof about it). Bottom line, after getting hit again, we visited mymechanic to ask them to reinstall the stick and correct their mistake. We were told that it was out of warranty and they would not do anything about it. We know that it was our mistake that we did not bring back the car in time (during the pandemic, we only drove our SUV; our Honda car trunk did get worse overtime). However, given that it is something that they did totally wrong (install the party in the WRONG direction?!), I expect that they will apologize and fix it. Maybe asking for an apology is a little bit too much (we did get hit in the heads couple of times due to their mistake), but to me, mymechanic should at least fix it without excuses or claim out of warranty. I do not know why there are so many positive reviews about this place (we were also brought to this business based on on-line reviews), I would suggest others to avoid this place based on our bad experience. We paid a premium about $150 to get the genuine metal "stick" installed within the trunk, which was about couple of minutes work (yes, I know it since my gas station tech even wanted to help me to reinstall it for free along with the state inspection, but I told him that I would ask mymechanic to fix it since they made the mistake). Now I may have to go back to my gas station tech and pay him a little bit to get this fixed. I do hope that no one needs to go through this and Happy holidays to everyone. read more

Car Mechanics often get the bad rep of dishonesty, but not the mechanics here! People are genuine in getting your car problem fixed at reasonable prices. Plus, you get a $10 off if you check-in on Yelp! I came here because my tire was suddenly flat after sitting in the parking lot for days. After getting the spare tire up, I went here on my boss's recommendation. I usually get glared and scorned by mechanics like a third-class citizen elsewhere but I was met with the friendly employees at this shop. The waiting room was also showing Fast & Furious 4 when I was there so I wasn't bored out of my mind as I wait for my car repair. In the end, my tire was flat because of a nail and it was fortunate that the damage was easily repairable. When the bill came out, I was surprised that the total was less than $15! I felt bad about using my Yelp discount, so I saved it in case I am in a bigger car trouble because I am planning to return here when I need car help again! --- tl;dr version: 1.
