Universal Body Oils & Herbs is a well-stocked shop for all…read moreof your health and body care needs. The shop is owned by a master herbalist who is clearly dedicated to empowering people to take charge of their physical health. The shop boasts a variety of everything one would need to look and smell good, and feel amazing. There are various dried herbs, herbal supplements, essential oils, soaps (including African Black soap), Shea butters, natural deodorants, fragrance and massage oils, perfumes, and targeted health tonics. He has sea moss, Palo Santo and sage, incense, teas, Alkaline water, honey, apple cider vinegar and other health food items. It's definitely my kind of shop as I am focused on using natural body products, drinking medicinal teas, and I love to create herbal concoctions for various reasons. Everything is reasonable and appropriately priced. There is an adjacent parking lot, which is fantastic for shopping on Livernois. Debit cards are accepted. I didn't have a chance to chat with the owner much, but he did tell me that the shop has been opened for a year. I plan to stop back in to talk with him about the health concerns I have and to test my novice herbalist knowledge of what I need to be using.

My experience here was extremely uncomfortable…read more As I walked through the store, I noticed various items on the floor throughout the space. While most of the products were bagged food items, it still gave the store a disorganized appearance. Since this was my first time visiting, I wasn't familiar with how the shopping process worked and there was no clear guidance available. After being in the store for a couple of minutes, I called out for assistance. A worker approached, and I asked how the process worked--whether it was self-service or if staff retrieved items for customers, since I didn't see any pre-packaged bags available. His response was, "I'll get what you need. That's not happening, my man. It's a wrap for self-serve." I said okay and started looking through my list. Within seconds, he asked, "Do you know what you want?" The interaction felt rushed from the beginning, and his demeanor came across as dismissive and unwelcoming. I've spent a lot of time in the Eastern Market area over the years before relocating to another part of downtown, so I'm familiar with the neighborhood and its businesses. However, the way I was approached made me feel like I wasn't welcome there as a customer. Whether intentional or not, the interaction left a very negative impression. Based on my experience, I won't be returning. There are at least two other spice stores on Russell Street that offer similar products with much friendlier customer service and a more welcoming atmosphere.

I'm a daily tea drinker and wanted to start brewing from loose tea. I looked for a local business…read morethat sold loose tea and Fraser Tea popped up on Google. Checked out their website and found out they are literally down the road from me. The website is nicely organized. Your able to search for teas based on flavor, health benefits, and mood. Their teas are organic, another reason I was hooked. Another bonus for me was being able to pick up my purchase and save on shipping. I try to support local whenever I have a choice. They included a cute thank you note in the box. I just tried the minty green tea and I'm hooked. No bitterness and very tasty. I've found my tea source from here on out.

Hashem's is truly a treasure and I hope more people will discover it. Service is always friendly…read moreand exceptional. They always offer samples, and are smart to do so because you WILL be back for more. If you love gourmet chocolate, you absolutely must try their imported chocolates. They're right up there with the best gourmet chocolates - forget Godiva, go for Hashem's. They're cheaper and more delicious. You know how when you receive a box of chocolates and you start eating them but you really only like a couple flavors in the box? Not so with Hashem's. I've tried a dozen or so different ones so far and have loved almost all of them - and I am fairly picky about chocolate - no novelty chocolate for me. My absolute favorite are the pistachio cream squares with the gold wrapper. If you're looking for a great gift, buy a pretty box somewhere, then fill it with an assortment of these wonderful chocolates. They're $19.99/lb but seem to average out to about a dollar each (some less, some more) in my experience. Well worth it and a bargain compared to the $3-4/chocolate that gourmet chocolate makers charge. A couple visits ago, I received samples of both the mulberry Turkish delight and rose halawa. I don't normally care for Turkish delight much, but that one was flavorful and delicious. The halawa is a sweet with an interesting flaky texture that melts in your mouth. It was so interesting (in a very good way!) that I had to go back for more and try other flavors (pistachio and chocolate) - all were great but I think I liked the rose best so far (and I don't normally like rose flavor!). Next, I think I'll try coffee. The nuts are great too. I've tried a couple of the pistachio varieties. All in all, Hashem's is a very unique little store and a true treasure of the community.
