The shoals
Debra R.

Great little hidden beach area with a few houses along a piece of Historic Hwy 1, private access to the man made island, and Cliff House Inn/Shoals restaurant. There is access to the bike path and parking for the hidden beach, (so hidden it disappears at high tide). Follow the trail at the south end of the parking area and scramble down the rocks to find the tide pools. We usually see anemone, and sea stars while dolphins cruise by. Fall and winter are the best time to find seashells at the shoals.

Lucky S.

It was high tide when I visited so not a lot of tide pool discoveries. :( Still, a beautiful spot to walk around if you're staying at the inn.

The Good: * It's a beach! * Volleyball * Surfing * Restrooms * Playground * Bike rentals available * Several restaurants, cafés, and even a brewery are all at your disposal. * Ventura Pier is great for fishing or a nice walk. * Paved trail that hugs the coastline. The Meh: * There is a city-owned lot and parking garage that I believe are $2/hr or $10/all-day. I saw something online about it being free if you have a State Parks Pass as well, but do not quote me on that. We were staying at a nearby hotel, so we did not have to worry about it. The Ugly: * Dogs are not technically allowed on the beach, but you would never know it based on the copious amounts roaming around unleashed. They are, however, allowed in "day-use" areas like the Pier. Conclusion: Great beach with tons of amenities.

The beach is also home to 100s of squrriels. I have never seen a baby squrriel till now. Like I said 100s of them. Some are fat and some are about 3 inches in size. They hide in the rocks and under the rocks. All very tame and not afraid of you. The waves can be great. Lots of lifegaurds in case you get stuck. There is plenty of parking. Just remember to always pay. The train also runs right by.

We went in January so the greenery was still that winter brown but it was not very busy which is nice. Beware of the specific ferry times cause if you miss it your S.O.O.L After the kayaking tour we got to walk a little bit around parts of the island before heading to the ferry. He received a Junior Ranger packet with activities to complete, and once he finished, he was officially sworn in as a Junior Ranger. He even got a little wooden badge, which was such a cute touch! The visitor center is also in a great location, right by the Ventura Harbor, with plenty of places to grab ice cream, eat, or do a little shopping. The whole area was clean, nice, and easy to walk around. Such a fun and family-friendly stop, especially if you have kids who love adventures and earning Junior Ranger badges!
