    Summer fun!
    Jack L.

Imagine a warm summer breeze funneled between two buildings as you sit at the shaded table during sunset. The live music echos out and you're there having the beverage of your choice and almost a potluck-like dinner feeling as newly made friends around the table share what they brought. I'm sitting at the venue, unsure of what to expect and realized it doesn't matter. I'm with good company, good food and live music. Ultimately, that's what the event really is -- a good time. Bring any food or drink you want and on a summer evening, listen to skillfully played music. Some I recognize, some I don't, but regardless, the event is worth attending alone or otherwise.

We went to see their jazz night and the dark atmosphere fit perfectly with the music. The music was good and seems to feature local musicians which is inspiring in my opinion. I believe tickets were $15 a person for a table and $10 for general admission. They had a Yelp deal which was for $15 for $30. We went for the table and essentially got 50% off by using their Yelp deal. I wouldn't say sitting at the table is completely necessary unless you're ordering food. The venue is fairly small, and you'll get a good sound wherever you sit. They allow you to order food at the clubhouse which is a nice treat, dinner and a show, ya know. They'll give you a number to place at your table and will bring the food out when it's ready. However, don't expect a full-on server to be present. If you need something make sure you think of it before you're done placing your order. Once you get your food, chances are you won't see that server again. The food wasn't bad. My husband and I split a burger with fries and an order of jalapeno poppers. I don't think people go here for the food though. Overall, it was a nice and reasonable option if you're interested in local music and looking for a weekday night out. Tip They do allow you to bring in your own wine and pay a corkage fee if that's something you fancy.

I was pleasantly surprised when I sent an email to the address on the website and received a reply with the password in a little over thirty minutes. After parking, we didn't have any problems finding the entrance even though it is not marked. Look for the big wood double doors and doorman standing in front. After giving him the password, he opened the doors and we walked in. We were surprised in several ways. The place is way bigger than I would expect for a place named "The Speakeasy". And at 6:30pm on a Sunday, we were the only guests inside. Only one other couple came in during the 30 minutes we were there. I would assume they are a lot busier on Friday and Saturday night. It is dimly lit, and very red inside. The bar is large with many bottles of liquor on display and many seats. The rest of the space is one large area that must have at least 20 tables, and the ceiling is high. It gives off more of a nightclub vibe than a speakeasy vibe. I tried the Naked & Famous cocktail which has two of my favorite spirits (Vida mezcal, aperol, yellow Chartreuse, lime, $18). It was nicely balanced with a good mix of smoke and herbal flavor. She had the Pablo's Poison (Altos reposado tequila, strawberry, lime, jalapeno, elderflower, $17). The jalapeno flavor really stood out with strawberry and elderflower in the background. They have a good cocktail menu with almost twenty cocktails, as well as a food menu with ten items. Walk up to the bar to order your drinks. Jeremy, the manager, and the female bartender whose name who I didn't get were nice. We aren't in Pasadena very often, and while they have a good cocktail menu, I don't know if we would return. We were expecting more.

Just make sure to read the signs. My friend and I were here for Ultra VIP and the sound check and other activities were around 4:15 PM. We got there a bit earlier and I'm glad at that time, the entrance is at the side, so the building provides shade over the waiting area and there was a gentle breeze too which was nice. Staff is very friendly, helpful and assistance. We had to transfer tickets over and it was as simple as a super short, brief explanation to staff/provided the ticket owner's name and it was all good. None of that BS from larger venues or if we had to deal with a QR code or crazy ticketing system. Huge relief. Thank you for being independent! We got VIP wristbands and they also card you for a wrist band if you want to order alcohol since there's a bar in the back. The concert area is upstairs and it's neat that it's historically a masonic lodge too. Neat door like backdrop to the stage and the historic wooden feel to it is nice too. Restrooms are a bit small, so it can get gross after a show, but we went beforehand so no issues for us. Free water throughout and trashcans everywhere too. Love that logistical planning. There's food and apparently an adjacent restaurant, we didn't get a chance to go, but it smelled good when we were leaving. Lights were a bit glaring but was adjusted and changed throughout the concert versus when it was on for sound check, just adjust the lighting settings on your phone. Good acoustics and sound quality, it got a bit warm at times, but not horrible, so AC is quite strong here. Wouldn't mind coming back here for another show!

However, when the friends decided to roll through and we started dancing, that's when the magic happened I hail from the time of yore with folded notes in class and calling for the time on the house phone. I'm old, y'all. So when there's music at a bar, unless it's a flashback night with indie sleeze or other ancient songs, I'm at a loss. I don't know who was DJing that night, but holy shit did that person transcend time and space with the fucking jams. Ranging from 90s house to modern cumbias this dance floor was fucking lit (or whatever the kids are saying nowadays) and we were sweating and dancing our asses off. It wasn't too crowded, the vibes were immaculate and I cannot want to come back with other friends and try again.

You can see some fun acts here, of course these change everytime the events held. There are several restauants in the square itself so you can dine there and get a good view of the whole thing if you're on the patios of the restaurants. You could also just mingle in the square with other people who will be dancing to the music. Since the square is closed off some of he restaurants had booths out that were serving small bites and drinks. Think spicy tuna handrolls and kirin beers from sushi roku. And there was also another vendor selling mexican food, like tacos as well. Prices were reasonable for these vendors. Like 3-4 dollars a handroll and 5 bucks for a beer or sangria. You cannot take alcohol out of the square. But you could take a flask in if thats how you roll.

KCRW? Never heard of it…read more Name an indie band? That's related to the race car, right? When it comes to indie music, I know virtually zero. I only discovered KCRW's Summer Nights music program after becoming enamored with the band Mr Little Jeans by accident maybe three weeks ago. Free performance in Pasadena? Duh, of course I'll be there! Here are my secrets to success for future shows at One Colorado: 1. One Colorado is a retail block which technically doesn't have an address apparently. Use this address for the iPic Theater instead: 42 Miller Alley, Pasadena, CA 91105. The entrance to the theater opens on the courtyard where everything is set up. 2. I usually park in one of the major structures in Old Town (which top out at $6) because it's easy and I'm lazy. Here's their info: http://www.oldpasadena.org/info.asp 3. It pays to go about an hour early to get a seat up front if that matters to you. Even if you're in the first row, it probably won't mean anything later though (see below). At least you can have some drinks and relax with your friends. 4. Il Fornaio sets up a cash bar in the courtyard. If you want to use a card, walk into the restaurant and order from the bar. Let them know you're at the event so they'll give you a plastic cup instead of glass. 5. Remember I said getting a good seat only kind of matters? For a long time, security was pushing crowds to the back where it was standing room only. At some point they just gave up and everybody rushed up front. You now have a choice to either leave your seat and join them or not. If you want to see the band, the decision has been made for you. Run forward quickly, even if it means you get separated from your friends; they were too slow and that's not your fault. I thought I saw a guy spinning with outstretched arms like Zangief to make a space for himself in the crowd. (You probably shouldn't do that though.) KCRW set up a really fun event and the crew had a blast. We'll definitely return for future performances. Cheers to summertime and beautiful Pasadena!

But maybe it is also because I emailed them too late? Besides that, my friend and I tried to do a surprise birthday party for my partner on the weekend. Come prepared because the wait can be long! The grand star for making this even happen is Melanie, she was super helpful and empathetic hearing my stressful mess as this was a last second resort. She told us 2 lane's aren't guarantee to be next to each other since there was a long wait but would try her best, understandable it is the weekend. Thankfully it all worked out we played for about 2 hours before our arms gave out. My partner was so happy to be here and spend it at Highland park bowl. Our server Carlos was also fantastic and gave us recommendations on what to order. They had this peach pizza that was so divine, can never go wrong with a classic margarita pizza. For a bowling alley I honestly did not expect their menu to be this tasty! I will say their drink menu is decent. They have a nice pool room with some arcade games, so you can never really get bored at this establishment. Hands down, without a doubt, best bowling alley food I've ever had in my existence. I'll start with the pizza because pizza is my favorite food. I was hesitant because I was at a bowling alley and I guess I've never had good food at a bowling alley until now. But when I looked around at all the pizza being served to different tables I just had to try it. I ordered the pepperoni pizza, and honestly it was sublime. I loved it. It was thin, crispy crust, good sauce, good cheese, good pepperoni. I devoured it. This pizza is better than most pizzas. I enjoyed it just as much as I have enjoyed Wildcrust, possibly enjoyed it more. Simply put, Highland Park Bowl makes a great pizza. Also got the calamari. Truly didn't have high expectations, maybe because I was at a bowling alley, but this calamari was shockingly good to me. Way better than expected, and would 100% order it again the next time I'm here. Additionally it was a pretty good sized portion. My wife ordered the burger and fries. She loved it. I tried it. I loved it. Fries were amazing. Would order it again for sure. The ambience is very cool. Had no idea this place has been around for like a century. Loved the vintage feel. So much character. Staff were super friendly. Although I think they may have been short staffed when we went. It seemed like there was only one server taking care of the whole place. She was really nice though and our food came out surprisingly quick. Came at 5:30pm on a Thursday and parked on the street right out front. Street parking is 1hr up until 8pm I believe. We were in and out of there in less than an hour. I timed it haha. Loved coming here and will be back sometime!
