Okay so this is one of those places where kudos must be given for concept alone.  It is something all of us Indians at heart search for...tada!  search over. Here's what I love:  a healthy variety of sweet and savory Indian snacks of which some can be full on meals.  very creative and fun names given to food items.  They have the largest medley of paan I've seen.  Goodness, they even have golas.  Their coffees are not your local gas station concoctions, they serve legit espresso, cappuccino, and lattes. Went for late night chai with my parents. Both the masala and ginger chai were really good and strong (just how we make it at home!). They go omit the sugar so you can customize it yourself. They also have various street food options, ice cream, shaved ice, lassi and paan. Definitely my new "chai date" place that I know my parents would enjoy more than coffee shops! My husband and I just happened upon this place and decided to give it a try. We had fun! We eat out quite a lot but have never had food quite like this before, so we enjoyed the new experience. We had no idea what we were ordering but the Mumbai Bhadang and Mumbai Veg Pulav looked good, so we ordered those two dishes. The Mumbai Bhadang was made with puffed rice so it was crunchy, savory, sweet, and spicy. I really enjoyed it. My husband liked it a little less because it was a cold dish not hot but he really enjoyed the Veg Pulav which was made with basmati rice. Both rice dishes were fairly spicy but not too spicy for us. The woman at the counter was super friendly and helpful. I asked for a suggestion and she recommended the Afghani Chicken Kabob which was delicious. A bit like what we know as tandoori chicken but better. For those who are strictly vegetarian it looks like there are two separate kitchens, one veggie and one for meat. (So you don't need to worry about accidentally eating animals if that's not your thing.) She also recommended a pistachio milk drink with ice cream, seeds, and rice in it. It was very tasty but sucking up skinny rice through a straw is both difficult and disconcerting. Afterwards she gave us free paan with rose, coconut, and fennel. We'd never had it before - a very new and unique taste for us. We probably wouldn't have it again but it was fun to try it. We'll definitely go back to this place. Been to this place twice. The first time we went, they took 1hr to complete my wife's order of Manchurian. When my wife asked the lady that took my order, she said we had to wait on the side. So when we went to the other side the same lady came over asked my wife what she ordered (I remind you that this is the same lady that took my order)...at this point I'm thinking that the lady might have had long day. Then she started making my wife's Manchurian and kept working on other orders. At the end of it, she was so occupied with other orders that she burned the food and filled the box and handed it over. The second time we went, it was almost the same service except the lady got our order completed in 45min. We ordered 1 Mumbai sandwich and Mumbai pulav. We were the only ones in line and placed our order. Then a group came in and order drinks. Immediately she call to girls to start making the drinks. Then 2 more people came in and ordered drinks and they started taking care of the drinks. And then more customers came in. After taking care 8 customers, the lady started working on the order and when I asked the lady when my order will be ready? She said it's taking long because I have to cut the vegetable (complete lie). So after I received my order and went home to eat, we found that the fresh vegetables that she was cutting were cold ( almost as if they were frozen vegetables ). Our group of 6 decided to stop here for a casual dinner on a Sat night. We were looking to devour some Indian street snacks rather than a full dinner and since we were a bigger group, we got to eat a lot of different items from the menu. I ordered the chowpatti puri, chicken kathi roll and the mango lassi. I also got to try the massal pav, vada pao, papri chaat, gobi manchurian dry, afghani chicken, nihari, falooda and couple other shakes. I know!! First, the things that were good - Chowpati puri/dahi puri - delicious...way better than at Honest Pav Bhaji! Papri chaat, nihari and afghani chicken were all really good too. My mango lassi and the kesar badam shake were amazing as well, esp the latter. Now my chicken Kathi roll wasn't amazing. The parantha on the outside was great, however, it was overloaded with just too many onions, chicken was dry and the little bit chutney inside was extremely spicy. The sitafal shake had absolutely no flavor of sitafal/custard apple and gobi Manchurian was a little too oily. Also, my friend had a little issue with his vada pao and found a piece of hair in it. He went ahead and told the owner who then exchanged it for another one. It was really disgusting and hence I remove a star. Overall, service was decent, pricing was economical and most of the other things on the menu were pretty spot on. So, I'll likely return. read more

If you want tasty Indian street food, definitely try this place out. I have been here twice in one week while visiting Chicago. I came for the egg dishes. However, I have enjoyed the cappuccino and bombay sandwich as well. It is not a polished restaurant and has more of a casual cafe feel. The decor is interesting and vibe is great with hip Indian-pop music filling the empty space. The openness of the place is inviting and can be good place to hang out with a group of friends. It is a one stop spot for snack, meal, coffee/tea/dessert and pan (digestif). Service was good and friendly when I visited. Wifi connection is good if you want to hangout here and work/study! I visited their on a friday night to satisfy my chaat craving (aaloo tikki). They didnt have aaloo tikki so v took chaopaati chat which is samosa chaat, vada paav, tose faluda and kathi roll. I am not someone who is active at reviewing food but this one was one such experience. Had tried many Indian restaurants in Schaumburg and thought to experiment Mumbai Cafe this time. Ordered Chole Bhatura and tea. The bhatura looked hopeless and nothing like how it should be. Forget the fluffy part, it was merely a small flat bread which wasn't even freshly made. When we asked, the staff told it is not deep fried and rather pan-fried and hence the texture. Since we were not happy, asked her to replace the order with Kachori chaat. It looked good though but wasn't fresh. Must have been prepared days before, reheated and served. My friend felt uneasy after eating this and had to puke. I wish I lived close by or in the vicinity to be able to go and have some late night cravings. Best paan, vada pav and all the other junk you may crave at might night. It certainly is a good spot to have in the burbs to satisfy your tongue and have a late night get togethers. Bhai Bhai omlette place is pretty good as well. I'd just suggest to make it somewhat less buttery and/or oily especially if requested. I'd certainly like to have it more if it is less unhealthy. I definitely love this place for all the other things they have to offer. Bhai bhai is for meat lovers but Mumbai cafe is for vegetarians. Food quality is poor. We ordered chicken kathi roll and couple of other items. Chicken roll took some time and when came, it was soggy and difficult to even hold. Looked like they used previously cooked meat and rolled in a soggy tortilla. On top, the lady on order counter is rude. We gave a $20 gift card and she applied only $2 and said, I can't change now, you have to pay. What a terrible experience!! First, the women behind the counter and the men who cook the food were on their phones most of the time that I was trying to place in order!! How unprofessional AND unsanitary. I then wanted to sit in a table that seated 4 people but I noticed how it wasn't cleaned up from the people eating before us. I asked the lady who placed my order to have someone clean up the table and she said "we are short staffed right now, there are other tables available". After a long time i have come here. The service quality is definitely gone down. I ordered one Masala soda and three sandwiches. For Masala soda they have charged me $4.99 and literally give me half a glass of club soda with zeera powder in it. Terrible taste and shear waste of money. The sandwiches are so so. My friends and I came to Mumbai Cafe to grab something quickly. Service was really quick and the cashier woman (who I assume is the owner) was super friendly and funny. Out of all of the Indian restaurants I've tried, I would say that this one was the best. If you want tasty Indian small plates I would give this restaurant a try. Make sure to try the chicken kabobs and any of their sandwiches (specifically the Bombay sandwich). My friends and I will definitely be coming back soon. I didn't want to write a bad review but Mumbai Cafe...you failed. The one star is only for your Vada pau...and that is all....just Vada pau. I made the mistake of having my family meet me there this past Sunday around 1 in the afternoon for vada pau and chat etc. We also wanted to try the bhai bhai cafe. We were the first and only ones there and walked in to filthy floors and tables...literally food and crumbs everywhere. Also found that despite the attractive pictures, the non veg side was closed till 4PM...UM have you ever heard of POST A SIGN that says that? I was so embarrassed cause I am the one that suggested this place. I did not venture into the washrooms because the family members that did said it would be better to just drive all the way back to my house to use the washroom. Filthy, dirty floors, and the hairs! oh the hairs!!! EEEWWWW!! The girl behind the counter was behaving as if she is so exhausted from our being customers....rolling her eyes, sighs every time we ordered anything, looking at us as if we were speaking an alien language. ZERO customer service----let's be honest....ZERO human courtesy. I will still say the vada pao was the only thing done well but everything else on the menu---we ordered just about each item as well as a variety of kulfis and faloodas ....were terrible. Oily, over spicy, bhaji for paubhaji was tasteless, the chats papri and bhel had nothing fresh in them at all....just bhel and chutney. They did give us the 2 free paans for the yelp check in but again the girl making them was treating us like that's all we came for when we spent over $100 in food--over priced and just meh. Warm water tank for the 'complimentary water'. I gave this place another shot despite what I had heard and boy have they declined since my last review---looks like they were nice and new 3 years ago when I wrote the first review and never cleaned it since. If you will be rude to customers and your food is so-so....at least clean the place up!! I am sorry I dragged my myself and my family through this, possibly my worst Yelp review experience. Just eh. We were enticed by the free paan for the yelp check-in. We decided to not be free loaders and ordered the famous Bombay chutney sandwich. Mind you, there is literally no cooking process that goes into making this sandwich so it totally did not justify an hour, yes an HOUR later when the sandwich came out. Yes, It was busy but c'mon. The sandwich was ok, nothing to rave about. The paan was too sweet. I can definitely see why people are excited to come here- the menu is huge and the variety of paan is pretty cool.
