Big Trouble - Some kind of pear dessert

Locals know this place is great. If you're traveling to Hattiesburg for any reason, like a…read moregraduation or baseball game or football game. This is the review for you. There are absolutely no shortages of places to eat in Hattiesburg. Some visiting might lean towards safe places with menu items they feel secure and safe with, and there's nothing wrong with that. But, if that's you you're missing out on some amazing food. Today I took my wife for mother's day as they had some special items on their menu, while also keeping their regular menu available. We started with their standard dumpling appetizer. We get it everytime we eat there and they're delicious every time. The meals we picked were the the kimchi cabanara and the shrimp and grits. Both on their special mother's day menu. Both were absolutely delicious with fresh ingrediants, balanced seasonings and amazing flavors. I'm Italian and grew up eating traditional family Sunday dinners but this bowl of pasta was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere of the place is very modern with a combination of traditional asian features mixed with some modern MTV inspired artwork. If you're into craft cocktails they got you covered as well. The only miss we had to day was our server never came back to take our dessert order, when we asked to order it he confused what we said for the bill and brought that instead. Not a deal breaker, we were actually too full for it anyway and we've had their desserts before. They always inventive and delicious. At the end of the day, one small service hiccup wasn't enough to overshadow what was an outstanding meal and experience. In a city packed with chain restaurants and predictable menus, places like this are what make Hattiesburg's food scene worth exploring. If you're willing to step outside your comfort zone a little, you'll be rewarded with creative dishes, quality ingredients, and flavors you'll still be thinking about on the drive home. We'll absolutely be back.

I came to Big Trouble excited for some ramen and left with a bowl that mostly tasted…read morelike...confusion. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Katsu Ramen, and unfortunately the "spicy" part must have taken the day off. The chicken katsu itself had less flavor than most fast-food chicken patties, which is a tough comparison to lose when you're floating in a $20 bowl of ramen. The broth seemed to rely almost entirely on the chili oil for personality, but instead of bringing heat, it mostly just gave the broth a slightly odd flavor. Not spicy, not rich--just kind of...there. Oddly enough, the noodles ended up being the most flavorful thing in the bowl (aside from the egg), which is not exactly the headline you want for ramen. Now the bright spot: my server, Eden. Absolute 5-star service. Friendly, attentive, and the kind of server that makes you feel welcome even when your meal is slowly disappointing you. If this review were based on service and ambiance alone, I would be handing out 5 stars. Honestly, I've had instant ramen packets that cost about $0.25 deliver more flavor. The only reason I finished most of bowl was because once you paid $20 for plain noodles, and gave up your only time to get food, there's a certain stubborn determination to see it through.

I would like to say how disgusted I am with this establishment after my child (SEVEN YEARS OLD)was…read morerefused service today because she wasn't wearing a mask. I think it is absurd to force anyone into doing that but to force a child is another level of stupid I hadn't seen until now. She was offered a mask that sat in a box that everyone else in the mall had touched and handled and not one employee was wearing gloves, which I feel should be worn by anyone handling food and between each transaction but even more so if you feel you may be spreading a deadly virus. If you're going to force someone to wear a mask, please make sure that you're forcing them to wear it correctly, enforcing your employees to wash between each transaction and also enforcing them to wear their mask properly or your life saving tactics are in vain. The age for enforced mask wearing has NEVER been for children under 12 and it is disgusting that my child left crying because of some little girl on a power trip. I also requested the managers or owners contact information and was refused that information. I wanted to do this privately but unfortunately the petty little girl behind the counter forced my hand. I appreciate all of the other stores in the mall for allowing their customers to freely choose if they want to wear a mask and not forcing our babies to wear them and still serving us kindly. -- with J.d. If you're looking for authentic Gulf Coast flavor in Hattiesburg, Crescent City Grill delivers…read more The gumbo was incredible--deep flavor and clearly made the right way. On the bartender's recommendation, I ordered the Catfish Plaquemine, and it was phenomenal. Perfectly prepared catfish with a sauce that really brought the dish together. This place has the feel of a classic New Orleans-style restaurant with consistently strong seafood. Definitely worth a visit and I'll be back.

The staff is attentive without hovering, professional without feeling scripted, and they genuinely make you feel welcome. The ambience hits that sweet spot -- energetic but still comfortable, making it an easy place to settle in and enjoy your meal. Now let's talk about the real headline act: the cheese grits. Absolutely out of this world. Creamy, rich, perfectly seasoned and the pepper Jack cheese added a wonderful touch-- they weren't a side dish, they were the star of the show. If they sold those by the gallon, I'd consider questionable life decisions. I ordered the shrimp po'boy. The shrimp themselves? Fantastic. Fresh, fried just right, and piled generously. The toppings and that homemade remoulade (or whatever magic sauce they're whipping up back there) were bright and flavorful. The only hiccup: the bread. The ends were toasted with the intensity of a NASA heat shield. I needed jaw strength training to get through the first few bites. Once you navigated past that crunchy barricade though, it was smooth sailing. I finished with the deep dish apple pie à la mode. I'm not sure if it was made in-house, outsourced, or assembled by a dessert engineer in a lab somewhere -- but I don't really care. It worked. Warm apples, flaky crust, walnuts, brown sugar, and cold ice cream melting into the whole situation... excellent flavor combo. Bonus points for a strong bourbon selection at prices that don't require a small loan application. That alone will get me back in the door. Four stars because of the bread battle, but I'd absolutely come back -- especially for those grits and a good pour of bourbon.
