A neat spot to go on Sandy Hook, in Ft. Hancock. Food was good, especially the onion rings...service was good...once we were acknowledged. Prettiest neat decor. I tried the Industrial burger, cooked perfectly and tasted fine. The portobello sandwich got rave reviews. The drinks were good too. We sat in the bar area, so it was on the loud side. Place was packed and not well staffed... and this was in the winter. Served burnt pizza and salad with no dressing. After requesting and not getting dressing they still charged us for all the food which I felt like wasn't right especially with the long wait. read more

The best part about The Mule Tavern was the ride along Sandy Hook! I, like many people, want this restaurant to succeed! I have been to the restaurant two different times and had witnessed many things that are just ruining their possibility of survival. First off, the owner Dan has obviously no control over his staff - they are all extremely rude and poorly trained. On two separate occasions we were seated and waited over twenty minutes for someone, anyone, to acknowledge our presence and not one person came over to say "Hi I'll be right with you." What I had to do on both occasions was wave my menu to get their attention...seriously the first red flag! The second red flag was when I decided to leave (after waiting 20 minutes on my first visit) and the server said "I cover this area" and then proceeded to turn her back on me and walk away. I went downstairs and asked to speak with the manager and the hostess brought a over a male, who I assumed was the manager (but now I know he is the owner) and I explained to him what happened and all he said, in the most pathetic manner) " ummm, sorry" and then looked at me blankly. Friends of mine wanted to go and sadly I agreed to go again and here are a few more red flags - again we waited over 10 minutes for someone to wait on us (was not busy at all in the restaurant) and I watched 8 people milling about the kitchen area on their phones, had to again wave over the server and the server went on to say "the kitchen is always a bit slow because it is really small and we don't have a freezer in there. We only have a refrigerator and stuff is brought in daily." We waited over 20 minutes for salads, for it only to be the completely wrong order (again it was not busy) and then the server again tried to explain that the kitchen is really small that's why it takes so long for the food. Then we were waiting for our drinks and I noticed the bartender behind the bar playing with his chin hairs for about three minutes - I'm sure that's a major no no in the food industry. When the food did finally come out the hamburger was the most disgusting thing I have ever tried! I'm not even sure what kind of meat it was - it had not taste and it was spongy and the brioche roll is too big. The fries tasted like porkroll (they must be frying their pork roll in the same fryer as the fries blah! The salad was clearly dumped from a bag and the dressing was clearly out of a giant bottle from BJs. Then I over head another couple complain that they waited at a table for 20 minutes with not one single person approaching and/greeting them. They then moved to the bar and waited another 10 minutes before a bartender came over to them to take their order. I overheard the woman say to the bartender "doesn't a Moscow Mule have lime juice?". The bartender responded "I think you are right.". The bartender then brought over a shot glass of lime juice for the patron instead of making her a new drink - so unprofessional! I could go on and on with what I witnessed in just two visit...but the bottom line is - Dan you may want to go back to the drawing board because sadly what you have worked on for three and a half years of your life is not working at all. read more

First, the drinks and the food were very good. We ordered burgers, but getting good, fresh burgers, done to your liking is challenging. Especially when my husband orders well done and I get med rare. That said, the day we went, it was crowded outside but, except for the bar, empty inside. We chose inside, dah, but we were told rudely 30 min wait. When I questioned it given, I was staring at an empty dining room. She said, "Do you want to it (to be placed on the wait list) or not?" We just drove an hour to try the place (xxxxx), is what I wanted to say, but instead, I said yes, please. We went and stood in the bar area and had 2 drinks each. They were good, as was the service given the crowded bar. When we were seated, the little waitress, after 10 mins, came over and said, "I see you got drinks, so are you going to order?" It was at that point we thought, "we'll this was a waste of a drive." After eating, we decided, maybe we would try it again because of the food and drink but only if we are in the area. Service was rude, and our feelings were expressed in our tip. We, as former servers/ bartenders, empathize and usually tip quite well, but I have a limit to my tolerance level. read more

Great spot! Love to see them doing things like this on Sandy Hook and helping to revive the old infrastructures of some of the dilapidated buildings. So much potential out there and I'm so happy that they took advantage of that. Ended up having lunch inside although it was a beautiful day and the outdoor area looked amazing. Honestly, couldn't go wrong indoors, either. Lots of charm and was amazed that they were able to transform this building as they did. Lots of charm and character here. My family and I had such a great experience, visiting the Mule Barn Tavern several times since it's recent opening! It's a very family friendly environment and we enjoyed both eating inside and outside. My kids enjoyed the burgers our favorite being the Jersey shore burger! I loved my Ahi tuna tacos, and we all enjoy the fabulous wings and pizza! Each time we visited we've had great service - very friendly and attentive staff. We will be regulars for sure! read more

Really do want this place to succeed. Sandy Hook needs more entrepreneurs willing to invest their resources into utilizing the old buildings for public use. BUT there are a lot of issues which the owners must shake out and address if this place is going to survive. The wait to get a table on a Friday evening was 2 hours. We were told the wait would be 1.5 hours, we were there, so we decided to give it a try. 2 hours later I see people being seated who came in after us. I went to the front desk to inquire and all I got was a "oh I'm sorry I'll seat you right now". The wait service was almost non-existent. I know the place was super busy, but the management needs to remain out front and ensure things are running smoothly. When the food finally arrived at the table the order was not complete. The waitress went back to find the rest of the meal which took another 10 minutes to produce. When it came out, the meatballs were COLD and stale and dried out and all they did was pour warm tomato sauce over them. At this time I would definitely NOT recommend this place. I'd let the kinks shake out a few weeks and try it again. If it's still under par then sadly it will only be a matter of time before the novelty of having a tavern restaurant out on Sandy Hook dwindle to the point of failure. Let's see and hope for the best because the location truly is beautiful and there is SO much potential. read more

Classless young hostesses at front desk and answering the phones. Can't give correct information when asked about if they take reservations. Instead of training these young rude girls the girls take it upon themselves to make up whatever answers they want. Called yesterday to ask if they take reservations and the girl said yes to my surprise. Told her i would call back when i knew exactly what i was going to do for the reservation. Called the next day and said i wanted to make a reservation, now I'm told they don't take reservations. hhmmm! So which is it? I go to the restaurant there is a 2 hour wait I see empty tables and they tell me those are reserved for reservations. I of course asked, since i was told they don't take reservations but now the third answer is we take reservations for 8 people or more. What the heck??? That's now a 3rd different answer. I'm so frustrated I haven't had one response that has been the same and am told there is a 2 hour wait. Frustrated to say the least now one of those hostess with the attitude tells me I'm "talking insane" I said your trained to talk to customers this way? And call them insane? I ask for the manager a man comes out and i explain to him what happened. He didn't seem to care and then the other hostsess comes up and says my manager said we won't serve you and to leave!!!! I asked the man aren't you the manager and he says I'm the owner. I said great!! Your good with them taking to customers that way? I would never eat here. They are so disrespectful!!! Not in a million years should anyone go there to be treated like garbage. Epic fail of ownership! Try training your staff! They should learn your procedures befor you put them in a position to talk to customers. Teach them the correct information. And def teach them to be respectful to people they face miss information to and that pay to go there. Good luck!! read more

I wanted to like it BUT the French fries tasted like cardboard no amount of salt or ketchup would help. I got the Jersey Shore burger with Pork roll. for a 20 dollar burger it was terrible. could not taste the pork roll the pretzel bun was stale and tasteless. At the end of meal the waitress asked me how things were as I was start to tell her she walked away didn't listen to a word I said. Then get an added charge because I used a credit card??? huh. yeah no way 1 and done. Yes I will add. I left a note for waitress to tell her how rude she was for walking away without listening to me. SO she tracks me down in the parking lot and tells me she did listen to me I said all ok. Well obviously she is wrong again she proved my point that she did not listen to a word I said. never did the words all was ok ever come out of my mouth. then she says have a nice day because obviously your not having a good one. She should not be in any line of hospitality she is lucky I'm not the boss because she would be so out of a job. read more

We stopped in last week. The place is beautiful inside and also has nice outdoor space. We sat at the bar and service was very slow. We waited almost 10 minutes before I was able to get one of the bartenders attention. As for the food, we just tried the calamari, and I would rate it as above average: crispy on the outside and soft on the inside (not chewy). As we were leaving a couple next to us got a pizza that looked very good. I would definitely try this place again, but I hope service improves. Great experience yesterday for lunch!! We were greeted by smiling hostesses who promptly sat us at a high top table in the bar area. Very fun, lively atmosphere. Our server was great and attentive. We started by sharing the calamari as an appetizer. It came with fried jalapeños and fried lemon slices. Not a combination of flavors that we liked. The meal itself was fine. We had the Ahi tacos which were flavorful, but the cabbage was not cut up into small pieces so every time you bit into your taco, you had a long strand of cabbage. The other main course we had were the crabcakes, which were fine. The noise with the acoustics bouncing off the walls and ceiling was quite loud which did not help when we wanted to talk. We had one glass of wine and no dessert or coffee. The bill was over $80 which we felt was high for the quality of the food and ambience. read more

After a long day in the sun, I was looking forward to some beer and maybe some food. Everything started off well enough. I sat at the bar and ordered one of my favorite drafts. When I ordered my second, I ordered the Mule Salad, as well. It was a very simple order, and one would think, impossible to screw up. When it arrived, I was confused, though, as I thought the menu had said it came with avocado. That is why I ordered it, but there wasn't any on the plate. I asked the bartender for a menu to make sure I wasn't mistaken, and then she was gone. She didn't seem to care why I had asked to check the menu, and just disappeared. MIA. Had she been even remotely attentive, I might have been willing to have them fix the order, but by the time she came back I was over it. I paid for the two beers and left. Words of advice: 1. Serve what you advertise on the menu, and 2. don't make your customers feel like you're doing them a favor by serving them. I won't be back. Life's too short. read more

Had the grilled chicken sandwich during a busy lunch, the chicken was cooked perfectly and the roll, and cheese made it better . The service was friendly and accommodating. The building is the star of the show. A restored army mule barn the restored interior is well done with nods to the building's rich history. It also doesn't hurt that it sits in a National Park. read more

Have been twice now once for lunch and once for dinner food and cocktails are excellent! Cool vibe, Reno was done very well and they have outside & upstairs dining as well. Had the mahi mahi tacos which were very good and have enjoyed the Horseshoe Cove cocktail twice now very refreshing.Had the ribs with sweet potatoes fries which was excellent and enough to share for two people. Two people in our party had a burger and both said it was very good and the other had Tuna tacos which were very good.
