Restaurant is large! Perfect for the big parties. There was live music playing, however it was not too loud and you could still hold conversation. Place is pricy! But the food is good.

So Mulate's was recommended to me and my boyfriend when we went down to New Orleans. We were on a hunt specifically for gator nuggets or fried gator. He tried some at a creole inspired restaurant in Chicago and really liked them so we were on the hunt to find really good gator nuggets. So our first stop was Mulate's. When we got there I wanted to be adventurous as well so I got the fried frog legs which actually were really good and now I have a taste for frog legs. I need to figure out where I can get frog legs in Maryland so I can fry them myself. It tasted like chicken, but kind of like a more mild taste and delicate texture. I really liked it. It tastes even better when you add the Louisiana hot sauce. The gator nuggets there were good. I think they could've been fried a little harder. They were definitely on the softer side like borderline mushy, but I don't want to say mushy because they did have a crunch to them. It felt like when like your order is up, but they let it sit under the heat lamp for a little bit instead of bringing it straight to the table so it didn't taste "straight out the fryer" fresh. For our entree my boyfriend got the shrimp Poboy. He really liked it. I got the crawfish at etouffée. I enjoyed it, it was savory. I know in New Orleans the base for a lot of their dishes is a roux. You definitely get that feeling there it's a semi-thick gravy like consistency. It reminded me of smothered pork chops, like that kind of gravy. I got a small cup instead of a large bowl and I think that was the perfect size because even though it's small, it's really hearty so I did like that. It had a nice crawfish flavor, and it was served with a small side of rice. I wouldn't say it was an absolute flavor bomb, but it was good. For my drink I got the hurricane which I figured out was a popular drink down there and it was good. It tasted like a Long Island but a little fruitier. The restaurant itself was really large. There are portraits of this blue dog like everywhere which I ended up looking up like halfway through our trip and it's the work of a well known local artist. The service was good and they were really nice. So yea, not a bad experience for our first food stop there.

Came here for the first time 8 years ago and we fell in love with their chargrilled oysters. Came back in hopes the oysters were the same and it was nothing like it was before. The oysters were COVERED with Parmesan cheese, and there was very little to no garlic butter. We didn't even finish our dozen before leaving. $32 for a dozen... The FOH guy was definitely stressed. Seemed like he had no idea what he was doing trying to seat us. Our server was super nice and attentive. We were just sad that the oysters weren't what we remembered.

Ok, the location/decor was fun and interesting. The Service was great. I loved the live music and people dancing. Overall the env was very fun!! The food...was ok. Its such a large location and so busy the food had a cafeteria style quality about it. And their idea of "Blackened" is not blackened...seasoned? Sure...but not blackened cajun soul style!

Had lunch here with some friends. I had the catfish mulate and enjoyed it. It had a shrimp sauce and came with mashed potatoes and veg. The table also had two po'boys, one with shrimp and one with beef. Conveniently located near the convention center. The service was great and it looks like they have live music often too. Would definitely recommend.

We came by one weekday evening to a busy dining room and mellow live music. It was one of our first restaurants here so we wanted to try all the things: jambalaya, cornbread, gumbo, etouffee, red beans and rice, bread pudding, nutella stuffed beignets.. we got it all. Overall? I'd give it an OK. I didn't love the jambalaya and thought the gumbo, etoufee, and red beans were all just a so-so sampling of what could be something far more delicious. I will write home about that cornbread, though. We ALMOST went back just to get more cornbread but decided against it, so I will fondly remember my Mulate's experience by a block of corn bread with whipped honey butter. For dessert, we asked the server to surprise us with two of her favorites - I'm sure she ended up just bringing what was most popular, but the surprise was fun. The nutella beignets are good, but gave more of a deep fried nutella vibe than a beignet vibe - I was expecting more dough. The bread pudding was incredibly sweet and dense, but flavor was good. Think of a wet cake that was packed and pressed down into a solid block - not a single air bubble to be found in this one. Indulgent, but I did take it home to finish off later.

My first time coming to this place it's mainly a live venue so coming here before 5 PM is probably not the best choice I was greeted when I came through. The servers were pleasant and the food came out really quick. I just kind of wanted a snack so I got a bowl of gumbo. It comes with rice and potato salad. I highly recommend potato salad in your gumbo, at least trying a spoonful. I wanted to try something little different so I got the half alligator half frog legs that was where things started to go a little wrong. I have had alligator and frog legs before and enjoyed it. I did read other reviews and they enjoyed the fried Gator bites mine were rubbery and I think over cooked after reading about Gator which can be rubbery if overcooked. I couldn't finish Gator and frog legs. It wasn't edible for me. So I can't in good conscience recommend the half and half Gator frog legs. THe gumbo changes here today was chicken sausage and shrimp it was okay. I am a gumbo fan and wouldn't order this gumbo again. This is my opinion, I would say get a cup and share it with someone and maybe it is your type of gumbo. The color was great, I like more savory roux. I ordered a Cajun Old fashion, they serve a really good portion and I recommend this. I recommend going with your favorite bourbon they have some options which is nice. I plan to come back and try some of the other dishes to be fair and give a better review of the menu. Great place to catch live music but timing was bad today. 1-2pm was very slow and only had 4 tables out of maybe 50 on a Friday. My experience was about 3 stars based on texture of alligator bites. And flavor profile of the gumbo. This place would be great for a large group to catch the band. It just wasn't the best experience for me today.

Mulate's had a great vibe. We visited this restaurant for dinner. They had music and a great atmosphere. The food was delicious. I had catfish nuggets and grits. My husband the charbroiled oysters. The wait time for our food was very minimal. I will definitely eat here again.

Stopped here on a rainy night for a quick bite after checking into our hotel. I decided to order the Taste of New Orleans since we were only in the city for one night & I wanted it all. It included gumbo, etouffee, red beans & rice, and jambalaya. Well the etouffee stole the show. It was loaded with crayfish and oh SO good!! I wish i had ordered the larger serving of just that. Second favorite was the gumbo. I thought the jambalaya and beans & rice were average. My husband ordered the shrimp po-boy which looked and he said tasted really good. Service was fast and friendly. It was too early fir the music and we were too tired to wait. 2025-101

If you've never been to NOLA, you have to make a stop at Mulate's! The live Zydeco music and dancing are a wonderful Cajun experience. The music just makes you want to move. The waitstaff are friendly and helpful. The food and drinks are good, but it's the atmosphere that makes it. It's a unique experience.

I had learned of this place a few years back. I just recently traveled from Atlanta to celebrate my birthday here. I chose this place for their nightly playing of good ole cajun music. The band is good at encouraging crowd participation. Since i was there for my birthday, i didnt mind playing the rub board and spoons along with the band. I had a freakin blast, and the video to prove it. I ate good too. I started with smoked boudin. Boudin is a traditional Louisiana sausage consisting of rice, ground up chickn livers ,pork and various spices. I also had chicken and sausage jambalaya. For dessert. I had bluebell ice cream. I loved every minute i was there

We had lunch here after walking around the Riverwalk. The BBQ shrimp and grits and crawfish etoufee were delicious. We added some crispy bread. The staff was very friendly cool air and cold beer.

The service was quick and hospitable. The food came out quick and was very tasty. We got the fried alligator and frog legs and the grilled alligator and frog legs. The seasoning on the grilled platter was sooo good. It's their house seasoning and there's shakers of it on the table. The restaurant was very large and kind of rustic. It was pretty empty when we went around noon, so it was very quiet. There were paintings of a blue dog everywhere, which was a nice touch

Food is fresh & delicious, staff are friendly- even when busy. Prices are a bit higher due to proximity to the convention center.

Hot N Cajun With no seated tables available when I arrived…read moreat Hot'n Cajun Boil House on Iberville Street in New Orleans, I happily accepted a seat at the bar. Behind the bar, Sandy mixed me a Summer Peach (Absolute Vodka, real peach, sweet tea, fresh lemon, $14) and provided the bib and gloves I likely would need if in fact I wanted to enjoy a crawfish boil. Of the dozens of restaurants I've visited in New Orleans, rare is the menu that includes a crawfish boil. Hot'n Cajun has it. I asked the barkeep Sandy B. if it was still crawfish season, and she assured me that it was. So I ordered 3 pounds of boiled crawfish (including potatoes and corn on the cob, $25.99), asked that the seasoning be "medium", and Sandy brought me a Model ($9) with a neat Maker's Mark ($12). The experience was pretty close to what I remember we'd find if invited to a neighbor's crawfish boil. Three pounds sounds like a lot, but the yield is more like half a pound, at most. So I put the gloves and bib on and started in on the crawfish. Nice presentation, and very good, fresh crawfish.

For the crawfish we chose the house cajun blend + mild spice, and for the crab we chose the Louisiana style dry rub + mild spice. It was absolutely delicious, and reasonably priced. Our server was even kind enough to demonstrate the proper way to eat the crawfish. I'd highly recommend this place.
