Attended my first -art and wellbeing experience this weekend. Diana was the most amazing docent…read more She walked us through some breath work and some great impressionists. This is a small event and lovely way to spend an hour at the museum. Just grab a ticket to the museum and check in at the booth up front and the experience begins. Diana spent time talking about breathing and grounding your self. While you are given a notepad and pencil to write notes and try to recreate the art. Don't worry you don't have to share tour impressions or art. The experience was located in one room and after we explored the rest of the museum and it is interesting at how different you look at the works in front of you when you are relaxed and in the headspace to experience . Bonus shout out to the museum which is over 100 years old and continues to bring the community together to enjoy and experience the art. I did not take any pictures because I was enjoying the moment.

They are also closed on many holidays, check the hours of operation before visiting. -They participate in Bank of America Museums on Us. Thanks to the friendly person at the front desk who mentioned this. -This museum is near La Jolla Cove which if you like birds, is not to be missed! The museum has three floors and nice outdoor areas including a restaurant. The museum overlooks an absolutely stunning coastline. They go a little overboard with recordings and staff asking patrons to stay away from the art (I get it, but geez!). Be ready for that, especially if you have kids. The Nick Cave fringy art is just too tempting for kids. I went to look out a window and was told to stay back, I mean really. They have a "calm room", and you might need to use that to calm down from being told to stay away from the art so much! Haha. I saw the Giants Alicia Keys exhibit which was great. The movie I could barely hear. They have tons of merch in the store for the exhibit, however I really wanted a t-shirt that was for the museum and not the specific exhibit, but they didn't have any.

In the graffiti, poems scribbled on the walls, dancers performing on the streets, local bands playing every chance they get... it's great! It's just a shame that the city lacks a cultural center that can hold and give home to this. It's because of that reason that I am a fan of every museum in Tijuana. This is obviously not an exception. You can easily identify the structure of this building miles away. It's huge! The good thing is that there is always a new exhibit on display. They really try to cover all grounds from photography to classical painting. Amazing lecturers as well, the curators do an amazing job at finding just the right talent to bring along. Just as a bonus tip, they do offer some art courses. For more information don't hesitate to contact them since the times/courses are always changing. I'm confident that they are all good though. The professors in here are knowledgeable and patient.

It wasn't much more than the price of the entrance fee. We signed up online through their website and was emailed by their super star staff members Alex and Abby. They took care of everything! Our docent that morning was Marilyn and she did an absolutely great job talking us through the entire museum. We were handed off to Abby and Alex to do a really fun project on automata. We all had a great time and will definitely do this again.

It is very unique in the exhibits there are though and for that, I recommend a visit. Some of my favorites were the Experiment 2.C which gives you the same illusion you get when are on an airplane, looking outside the window. The color is very fascinating and the exhibit overall is very thought provoking. It ended up being the favorite for two of the people I was with. Other ones I really liked was the We Are All Made of Light where lights reflect off you and you see your shadow on the screen. There were other exhibits that were really emotional such as Confessions and Where Thoughts Go which I found interesting but at the same time weird as they both were so different compared to other exhibits that I wasn't sure what this place is trying to attract or messages it sends. Each exhibit had enough workers that were willing to give you background about the art and I really appreciated that. As for the parking, we ended up parking in a private lot adjacent to this place which cost $20.

There were a few exhibits that I would have liked to see and we signed up for the wait list on the tablets, but it said there were over 100 people waiting, we never got a text back, and then ended up leaving. It seemed like there were a lot of people just waiting around the common areas and I'm assuming it's for those exhibits. On the plus side, it was indeed fun. They serve red and white wine (right under $9), which we ordered and made the trip a blast ;) The exhibits that we did see, especially with the lights and colored yarn, were awesome. I just didn't favor the one in the dark room where you hear a bunch of cars crashing over and over...it got me paranoid... but hey it's art. Even with a massive crowd and vendors everywhere, it never felt overwhelmingly packed. You could grab a drink, wander through an exhibit, find something to eat, take photos, meet other Yelpers, and somehow keep discovering entirely new sections of the event. Yelp's Art After Dark at The New Children's Museum was easily one of the coolest Yelp events I've attended. Taking over an entire museum for a 21+ night of food, drinks, art, music, and local businesses was already a great idea, the execution made it even better. And there was A LOT to try. Bitchin' Sauce, Boochcraft, Chuy's Taco Shop, Rock N' Roost, Balsamico Italian Kitchen, Gaby's Munchies, Jackalope, Origins Tea, Coqueto Café, Antojitos Express Bar, Emerald Spear Tequila, Pali Wine Co., Melograno, 19th Hole Spirits, Old Hillside Bourbon Company and plenty more showed up with food, desserts, coffee, tea, cocktails, wine, and spirits. Going in hungry was definitely the correct tactical decision. What made the night especially fun was that it wasn't just another tasting event. Between the artwork, interactive experiences, entertainment, photo opportunities, and museum itself, there was constantly something happening or somewhere new to explore. Even better, the night supported The New Children's Museum, with suggested donations helping provide programs and opportunities that make the museum more accessible to San Diego families. There are iPads randomly placed inside the displays that show a floating half human half owl with medusa arms. Lots of one eye/ hand-eye symbols everywhere. The top floor had favelas that were painted white and black with writings on the wall I could not understand because they were written in almost like hieroglyphics. I can't see how all the words and art relate to children. Throughout the exhibits, there are lots of tunnels and dark spaces that you can't see your children in and many opportunities to separate you and your child. I felt like I paid to have my child separated from me half of the time. The piñata and favela exhibit are the worst ones. It took my son and husband 10 minutes to exit because the walkways are tight and narrow and cramped with all the kids. I would not consider the favelas toddler friendly whatsoever and I'd say this is a safety hazard. An older man was standing in front of the piñata exhibit evil laughing to scare the kids. No one intervened while this man did this for maybe 10-15 minutes scaring kids. It literally reminded me of horror nights/ haunted trails. Despite these things, my family made the best of it and enjoyed the block exhibit, art room, the cafe, and a few sensory activities, but honestly I don't know how this is classified as a children's museum and with no AC in most of the museum, I don't think the experiences justify the price.
