I enjoy raspberries, and I thought it was different from the usual strawberry pairing everywhere else. The raspberry jam gave a nice sweetness. The cream top wasn't overly sweet. My husband is a fan of banana bread, so he got their signature latte. We didn't taste the banana flavor at the first sip, but after a good stir, the caramelized banana flavor came through. The vanilla bean cream top gave a good texture. We both finished our lattes in no time. The cost was around $16, excluding tip. They also had baked goods and cake pops for sale. Service was quick and welcoming! No complaints. I follow their socials and look forward to trying more of their signature drinks.

This is LA - And a common question asked is how much caffeine or carbs are in the foods and drinks served. The Highland Park location feels a bit sterile and minimalist. It can't compete with the Pasadena spot, which has a brewery, right smack in the middle of the room. What really stands out is their mission: helping formerly homeless and transitional-aged youth train as baristas. Because of that, I can give some grace, like when the cookie was sold to another customer after I'd already purchased it, without an apology or offer to replace it, (they did replace it after I asked). Still, I hope they continue developing their customer service, so it matches the quality of their drinks and pastries. Bonus points for the soundtrack. Any place playing everything from Samurai Champloo to Björk makes us Gen Xers happy.

The front bar is bright and inviting, while the back lounge is dimly lit and romantic. There's plenty of seating both inside and outside, making it just as good for getting some work done as it is for lingering over a meal. The breakfast sandwich was outstanding and absolutely worth the $20. It came on a gluten-free focaccia bun with a fluffy soufflé-style egg, melted cheese, arugula and perfectly toasted bread, served piping hot. My espresso came the classic way with sparkling water and a slice of dried citrus, which was a nice touch. The staff was warm and friendly, and the whole experience felt thoughtfully curated without being pretentious. I'll definitely be back.

In LA's competitive coffee…read moresphere, it feels imperative to have beautiful furnishings, somber mood lighting, flower arrangements, and dazzling garnishes. For me, none of this matters if 1: the coffee is underwhelming and 2: the space is uncomfortable! On first glance, the shop is gorgeous and well styled, but upon use, it's awkward, cramped, and uncomfortable to work or relax in. Outdoor seating is sparse and uninviting, and the indoor space (also acting as the wine bar at night?) is dim and bleak even during the early hours of the day. Oddly arranged couches with small tables (covered in crumbs during my latest visit) create an odd distribution of comfort and utility, with the more comfortable back couches, capable of seating 5-8 people, often only hosting 3 at most due to the small tables, leaving standing in the tight lobby or sitting on wooden stools over bar shelves that can't fit HALF a laptop on. I feel like it is my duty to communicate transparently about my experience here because I think this place has huge potential, and I want nothing more than to see another East Side coffee stop thrive!
