The wife and I were at the Castle for a friend's daughter's wedding. What a great spot for a wedding. The ceremony was held under some tall trees which was perfect since it was a bit warm, even though it was 5pm already. The dinner was a buffet of salad, potatoes, short ribs and chicken parmesan. I wish I had taken two servings of short ribs and skipped the chicken parm. The short ribs were juicy, so tender and just falling apart with my fork. We went to my cousins wedding here yesterday and had a GREAT time. If yr looking for an outdoor venue with views of mountains, nice weather, ample space for dancing, outdoor ceremony space included, this is it! Everything was manicured. From the property to the tables to the bar, very nice space. I want to shout out the bartender Jessie. Very very nice guy. I've been to many weddings and the bartenders couldn't be bothered. After a phone conversation and a resolution for my sister (not me or my shoes though) i can appreciate how they handled the situation and can honestly say they made things right for my sister. Which is what matters most since it was her day. I'm still knocking down stars since there was no resolution for my $100 shoes and i don't appreciate how unprofessionaly the situation was handled at first. I swear this place pays review places to take down posts. I've reviewed them a few times now on different platforms and they keep flagging it for removal. I will repost as many times as I have to to warn others so this review is based from a guest point of view. I see other reviews that allow that so I'll speak based on my experience the day of only and this shouldn't be a "violation of rules" as they're claiming to the websites. Very disappointed in this place. The bridal suite was extremely hot and only had a portable AC that wasn't even turned on when we got there! So we were sweating the entire time we got ready in the room. The bartender was super rude to anyone of color and flat out refused to serve some of them. He made inappropriate remarks to me personally about "how much I was drinking" by the third time I went to get a drink and had such an attitude. I'm glad to hear he got fired from the bride and groom. Also, I believe the staff stole my $100 pair of shoes and almost stole a pair of my Dad's Ray Ban sunglasses but he caught it on time. I, along with many guests, left our stuff at our tables after dinner to witness the cake cutting and the staff moved our personal things and placed them in a pile at another table closer to the building. How rude is it to touch people's personal items?! That's the reason for the shoes going missing so it's on them. They say they don't have them in their lost and found. So where'd they go?? We loved our wedding here! Back in 2019 we planned our wedding for January 2021. Then the pandemic hit and we postponed it by one year. It was super easy and quick. Leading up to the wedding Peyton, & Brooke were super helpful. They answered the questions we had, and put up with a lot of last minute changes that came about from the omicron surge (lots of last minute cancellations due to the surge). the dress rehearsal was quick and easy too. Then the long awaited big day! We've been waiting for this day for 2 years! the entire day went so smoothly. We didn't have to worry about anything. Peyton set up all the decor beautifully, and we loved seeing our guest book laid out. The reception went smoothly and all the guests commented on how beautiful it was. It really was! We loved the gorgeous trees and mountains! The only slightly less positive thing is that I thought the food could've been better. Date of event: November 9, 2018 It was my closest friend's wedding, and yours truly was part of the festivities as an usher/escort to the mother of the bride. The location they had chosen was Mt. Woodson Castle all the way up in Ramona. Who knew that San Diego actually had a castle (even though it's a bit out of the way, and it shares space with a golf course)? The venue is gorgeous - the ceremony was held outdoors, and the weather was perfect for all parties involved. Although Mt. Woodson Castle is up in the mountains, the views are beautiful. The interior is vast, with the various rooms (especially the bridal and groom suites) being quite airy and having a rustic feel to the place. The main room itself is quite spacious, even if they had to clear a few of the tables - including the wedding party's - to open up the dance floor. (Speaking of, I kinda considered requesting the DJ to play "The Rains of Castamere," only to find out that not too many of the guests were avid fans of Game of Thrones...) The staff are very professional and kept things moving along as the festivities commenced. Pretty impressive, especially since the wedding ended at 9pm, and everything was packed up and put away an hour later. While parking isn't as close as I would've liked, it was pretty easy getting in and out of the lot. Give this place a chance if you're planning a smaller wedding and want a classy intimate venue to hold it in. Mt Woodson was the first venue we looked at and we instantly knew it was the venue for us! We loved how unique it was and the history of the building. The pictures online don't do the history justice! We especillay loved the hand painted astrology room. All of the ceremony & reception spaces were amazing but we fell in love with the oak trees and the lower lawn for the reception. Another great part about the venue is how inclusive it is. The coordinators were so helpful in finding vendors for the things we wanted (marquee letters, specific arch, etc). The coordinators were very commmunicative leading up to the day and were happy to help answer all our questions! The provided lists of suggested vendors and that helped us so much since we aren't from the area! They also offer a lot of items from "Amys Closet" which has table numbers, card boxes etc. It was great to have access to these for our day. The day went pretty smoothly and we feel so thankful we found Mt Woodson as our wedding venue. All of our guests really loved it as well, we are not local to San Diego so it was a bit of a drive for some guests, but they all said it was very worth it and loved it as much as we did! Our wedding at Mt Woodson was everything we dreamed of!! I cannot thank the staff from Personal Touch Dining (the in-house caterer/manager) enough for making our day flawless. We worked with Peyton and Kelsey in preparing for the event. Communication was super prompt and they both went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. I loved that for our tasting, we did a group tasting with other brides and groom who were also getting married here. Our day-of coordinator was Stephanie and she was fantastic. I admit that I was nervous not meeting our coordinator until the rehearsal (which is the policy of this venue, and something that we were told at booking) - I had become so comfortable and confident in Peyton and Kelsey's work that it was scary to bring someone else into the process that I didn't know. But we could not be more happy with Stephanie's management of our wedding day! She took such good care of us and our families, making sure we stayed on time and guests had the best experience. And she did it all with a smile on her face! If she was stressed at all during our big day, she never showed it - which left me feeling so relaxed and confident on our wedding day! We chose the Oak Tree site for the ceremony, the Upper Lawn for our buffet dinner (tri tip, Parmesan breaded chicken, salad, green beans, mashed potatoes, and bread), and inside the castle for dancing. The Oak Tree site at 5 pm on a sunny day in June was magical!!! Perfectly shaded but green and beautiful. Everything I dreamed of and more! It's a little steep while walking in heels to get down there, but otherwise an excellent choice. The Upper Lawn was beautiful as well, especially under the market lights for an evening dinner! The huge bar is right near there which made for a fun cocktail hour too (we had an open bar, which was $20/person - totally worth it!). Our DJ (Kaleb from Dancing DJ Productions) set up in the balcony overlooking the dance floor which was super fun. We extended the evening by one hour for a fee, which we are glad we did! Waiters, bartenders, and other staff were attentive. Food was great! Everyone was talking about how this was the best wedding food they'd ever had! The negatives: this venue is far from San Diego. It's on some windy roads which made me nervous, especially driving at night. People who used Uber took forever to get a ride. There are also not great hotel selections nearby. We wanted to stay at a beautiful hotel for our wedding night so we ended up at the Lakehouse Resort on Lake San Marcos - LOVED the hotel but it's a 45 minute drive from Mt Woodson. Our next choice would have been Rancho Bernardo Inn but for the price, it wasn't really what we were looking for. Thank you to everyone at Mt Woodson who made our day perfect!! After we toured the gorgeous 1920s castle - tucked away at the base of Mt. Woodson, with a glorious oak tree shaded ceremony site - every other possible wedding venue paled by comparison! Adding to that were the amazing people who run the venue and the catering. Our wedding went off without a hitch thanks to the awesomely organized, always helpful, patient, (did I mention professional, experienced, and super friendly?) Peyton and our day of coordinator Kelsey! Peyton was supremely helpful from touring the venue to the tasting to the rehearsal and went above and beyond making sure we had a great experience every step of the way. Day of, Kelsey stepped in as if she'd known us all along and executed a perfect wedding! All decor was arranged according to what we'd communicated to Peyton the day before. She kept the vendors, ceremony and reception on time but never made us feel rushed. Her calm and sunny demeanor kept this happy but nervous bride in the moment and having a wonderful time ! At the end of the aisle after the ceremony she handed my husband and I a beverage, made sure we got our own mini cheese board from cocktail hour even though we had been out taking photos, assisted with cake cutting, and just overall made sure we were happy and had everything we needed/wanted. My wife and I tied the knot here 7/1/22. Over the months of planning they offered great service and communication. The day of was wonderful. Only two small things: The hotel they recommended was difficult to communicate with. Not on the venue but just a word of caution to future couples. There was a communication mix up with the wedding cake. One of the staff asked us if we were saving the top tier of the cake, we said no. Unfortunately that was taken as we weren't saving any of the cake so they threw the rest out. Not the end of the world but certainly unfortunate. The location itself is stunning from the grounds and trees to the handcrafted interior and beautiful bridal/groom suites. Taylor, our event coordinator, is probably the most talented and amazing person in the entire world and she made wedding planning a breeze! Thanks to COVID we had to change dates, adjust group sizes, deal with city and state restrictions, and of course all the regular wedding planning details, but she handled it like a champ, was always super responsive, and made everything work our perfectly! I literally don't think we could have planned this wedding as successfully as we did without Taylor and the incredible team at Mt. Woodson! This review will focus on the castle as a venue - I will review the catering and wedding coordination (which was excellent) in a review of Personal Touch Dining. Mt Woodson Castle was the perfect place for our wedding. We fell in love with the oak tree ceremony site and the breathtaking views of Mt Woodson. We had our wedding in December and experienced ideal weather. While we got a bit lucky, it goes to show that this is a viable outdoor venue for most of the year. The great room of the castle was fantastic. We used it for a pre-ceremony tradition and for post-dinner dancing. The great room accommodated our 200 guests with ease; in practice, there were never 200 people in the room at the same time but even at its most full it never felt too crowded. The upstairs balcony made for a wonderful viewing platform for those who wanted to watch the dancing but not participate. Other guests milled about on the patio outside or on the front lawn. Many of our guests reached out to us and told us how magical the venue was. The only downside to the venue is that it's charming and aesthetically-pleasing uneven surfaces create mobility issues. We were able to mostly work around this because our guests were considerate and lent a helping hand to those who had a hard time with stairs and slopes - but our grandparents were definitely tired and sore by the end of the event. In 2020, Taylor helped us with every detail, she answered every question and even the uncertain times to explain our options since CA was only allowing ceremonies and not receptions at the time. We opted to do our ceremony on July 31,2020 and then have our reception the following year on July 30, 2021. When contacting Taylor back earlier this year, she forwarded me to Dani and Peyton since Taylor moved away. I was really bummed she moved since she was so helpful and sweet! But little did I know, Dani and Peyton were just as amazing!!! Honestly, they picked up right where Taylor left off. They reminded me what colors and food we chose, the timeline of the wedding and answered all our questions! The main reason we chose Mt. Woodson, obviously other than the beautiful venue with the oak trees, the historic castle and just so many photo opts wherever you looked, is their delicious food! Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE loved the food! They said it was the most delicious wedding food they have ever eaten. From the staff (who by the way compliments you when they see you and just makes you feel so good!), Peyton who overlooked the whole venue and honestly Dani who is my favorite person there! She took down notes, wrote down where we wanted all our decor, every little request was with a smile to make sure it was a perfect, relaxing and fun day! I trusted her to put decor wherever she thought would look great, told us what is coming next, food was delivered to our table so we wouldn't even have to get up and go get it and even drinks when we requested it! However, it was a VERY tough decision as we did truly love Mt Woodson! Rian was so nice and on point the day of our wedding, he kept everything on time and made us feel like family. Cons: 1. Iman was very rude. From our food tasting where she seemed like she wanted to leave early and rushed us out, to our misunderstanding about the guest count, and finally when she told us our small amount of flowers that were cleared by her assistant were not welcome at the venue during our rehearsal. I had my wedding at Mt. Woodson Castle this past April, and everything about it exceeded our expectations. We made a visit and knew from that day we would be getting married there. The prices are affordable in comparison to other venues around San Diego. We were lucky to have Iman as our day-of coordinator, which is a huge perk to have a built in day-of coordinator when booking this venue. If I could give any piece of advice to future brides-to-be it would be to have a day-of coordinator, especially one as excellent as Iman. She was always on top of things throughout our entire 15 month engagement. Emails would typically have a response within the day, which is huge when planning a wedding! Woodson allowed us to have many upgrades in terms of chairs, chargers, and dining options to fit what we were looking for. You're able to add on extra time, and for us this was big! The beauty of Mt. Woodson blew all of our friends and family away. It's nice to find a venue where you need minimal additions due to how remarkable everything is. Personal Touch Dining is the catering company that works with Mt. Woodson and they're phenomenal! I'm a huge foodie and their presentation,quality, and taste of their food was excellent. We had a seated dinner where guests could choose from filet, salmon, or portobello napoleon. Our guests loved the appetizers as well! Everyone working was extremely friendly during our wedding day. Just went to a wedding here, so this review is a guests point of view. The atmosphere is beautiful, very earthy outdoor type environment. But it is definitely not handicap, senior, or high heel friendly. Your mostly in dirt, grass, or uneven cobble stone type steps and floors. Do not wear heals! Walking outside from the lower venue part where you get married, outside with really a beautiful backdrop of a mountain filled with boulders, to a level up where you eat and than another level up to the actual house is VERY uneven, especially the steps. I'm not saying it's not pretty, it was a beautiful wedding, it's just I was with a senior with a walker. I'm giving the venue a 3 because the food was not good. The chicken was hard and didn't taste a thing like "chicken Marsala". The sauce was not Marsala. It also was not hot. The ribs were good and the best part of the entire meal was the whipped potatoes. The rolls were hard. The appetizer Poke Tacos were very good but the "charcuterie" board was more just cheap cheese and crackers with salami. I will say the event itself was managed excellent. This venue is gorgeous and so unique--you won't find anything like this anywhere else. Due to covid restrictions we were only allowed to have our ceremony and take photos there. I am so grateful we were able to do that because our photos came out beautifully. Everyone was in awe of the beautiful grounds and theres so many amazing spots for photos that are so unique. We had our ceremony in front of the castle which made for a gorgeous backdrop for all of those photos. We did wedding party photos by the oak trees and family photos by the castle. You also have access to the grounds and golf course, so my husband and I were able to do photos there as well. Its such a beautiful outdoors space with the castle and lots of greenery and then the inside of the castle is so cool and different. I looked at soooo many venues online and toured them as well, but nothing compares to this. As soon as I walked on the property, I knew we had to get married here. Taylor, the event manager, is AMAZING. I can't emphasize that enough. She always answered all of my crazy and panicked questions quickly. The venue was very accommodating with all of the last minute changes due to covid as well. We were able to do the tasting before our reception had to be cancelled and the food is delicious. They have so many great options its hard to chose. Even if something you want isn't on their menu they will make it for you. Its also a really good price for everything you are getting in my opinion. read more
