So we had a look in Loebethal and a few other little towns around but just couldn't find anything that looked appealing. Well, luckily we decided to drive the extra 17km to Birdwood because Pomegranate Cottage is a truly lovely place! They have a very cute outside garden, with a fountain and surrounded by lots of trees and flowers so on a sunny day it's probably the best place you can find in Birdwood for lunch. (Mind you the choice isn't that big either) Great setting, friendly service and a good selection of food, ranging from pies to salads, fish to meat and some sandwiches. I had the beef pie for $14, which came with a small salad (no dressing though) and fries. You could tell the pie was homemade and not coming from a freezer. Very tasty and in terms of size I think the dishes are alright for the prices they charge. One thing that bothered me very much though is that the waitress came clearing the plates of the 3 people that were with me while I was still eating. That's an absolute no-go and would be a reason for me not to go back. However, the food was very good so I still recommend the place.

That doesn't mean that they are bad though. Mind you, this place isn't open all that often, though it is open during the Christmas Lights, which makes it a pretty good place to have some dinner if you happen to be visiting Lobethal for the lights. Yeah, it's pretty impressive actually.

Oh Bierhaus. How I love you…read more As an Adelaide Hills resident, this is where I direct and sometimes take beer lovers who are visiting the hills. What's better on a hot summer day than escaping the sweltering city, venturing up to the cooler climate of the hills and getting a paddle at Bierhaus? Nothing, that's what. Bierhaus have it all going on; Great beer, welcoming staff and owner, the brewing setup on display and great food. If you can score a table outside in summer, it doesn't get much better. A group of friends, a paddle of beer each, some chips and buffalo wings and good times. More beers, and then hopefully someone hasn't drank and can drive you home, or if you're smart you get a group and do an Adelaide hills beer tour which includes prancing pony and grumpys. I'll do one later and review it. In winter, chocolate oatmeal stout is the ultimate. I drink it at Stirling and Crafers pubs, buy it from belair... But on tap at Lobey is the best. Also, get a growler to drink at home and bring back for a refill any time and you've got the whole system gamed my friend. Beer on.

If you were passing through town and felt like a coffee and a home made cake (get the passionfruit vanilla slice if available) then the sunny paved brick courtyard out back or patio out front under umbrellas is a beautiful setting. Inside is filled with large wooden clocks, plates, candles, silver ornaments, cushions and the usual candidates that occupy a country gift shop. The lunch menu is fairly limited and for $35 for a pie and salad and a tomato bruschetta I felt it was a tad expensive. Tomato bruschetta literally was 2 pieces of bread with a pile of tomato and some shavings of basil and the curry pie, although lovely, came with a very simple lettuce and tomato salad. Coffee and tea was lovely though and I'd love to see more afternoon teas here to really twee up the Avalon Downton Abbey experience. With a little tweaking of the formula and simplifying the lunch menu to high teas, with more of their home made cakes, scones and desserts this place can really ham up the out of town experience for us city folk in an enjoyable way.

"An Adelaide Hills French Style Cafe"…read more This Cafe located at the rear, of block 54 Onkaparinga Valley Rd, Woodside, Main Street. This French Style Cafe is far more than a coffee, cake stop, we have returned here on number of occasions as a special treat. Apart from the fact that they serve excellent coffee, accompanied with mouth watering cakes, with a good kitchen and chef. As you dine inside or alfresco, your eyes will feast on, antique French style furniture (painted), many and various old and unusual objects. All for sale at very reasonable prices. Thus creating a very relaxing ambience, as you wander about viewing so many interesting items. This venue would be an ideal place for a wedding, and I understand larger group bookings are essential.
