Went here years ago to adopt a dog, best experience I had. But now you can't walk in and see the dogs that are up for adoption!! You have to sit with someone and tell them what you are looking for in a dog and they match you up! Can't believe it! No wonder why there are so many dogs being euthanized now, you can't even visit to see if you like any of them first! Won't be going back to this place. I worked as a volunteer there for a while because I love animals and wanted to serve. Although there were some pleasant experiences, they were overshadowed by the passive-aggressive, demeaning, and even spiteful ways some of the staff acted towards the volunteers. One young staff member liked to interrupt even very capable, dedicated trained volunteers in the middle of their work and repeatedly demand answers to pop quizzes. A staff member would instruct us to perform a duty in a certain way, and then another would scold us for doing it that way. We were praised by someone for doing something, then berated by someone else for the same thing. Several other volunteers told me they had the same experiences. They may have a new building, but they need to get their act together and improve their attitudes about and behavior towards hardworking volunteers. I was so happy to leave that on my last day I wanted to dance in the parking lot. Now I happily volunteer elsewhere. read more

My husband and I went there today to just go and pet the dogs and maybe throw the ball around. They only had two dogs (which is a good thing) but they wouldn't let us pet the dog we were interested in. They showed us a smaller dog, senior, that was presented to us as "on her way out." The dog we wanted to play with had been in the shelter for nine months and was absolutely adorable. We left completely disappointed. We probably won't be back. Building is clean and brand new, sucks that the attitudes of the staff bring the place down. read more

Right on Rt. 28, this MSPCA facility is really easy to find, and there's parking right in front of the building. There's not a huge pet population here but if you do decide to adopt one of the deserving cats or dogs here, you can give a shelter animal a happy life. Bunnies, cats, dogs, guinea pigs - they have them all and most of them are right out where you can easily see them. A couple with medical issues are more isolated in the back, but still in big clean living cubes (yes, aka cages but what are you going to do?) with plenty of food, water and comfy beds and toys. It's clean inside, doesn't smell grotty, and on the weekdays that I was there, there seemed to be plenty of staff and volunteers to help with visitors and animals alike. The staff members that I spoke to were personable and well informed on each animal. The volunteers were chatty, maybe a little too chatty with each other while I waited for answers but hey - they don't get paid and you get what you pay for, so... The adoption counselor that I dealt with was very helpful in answering any and all questions I had about several animals and was very patient on my visits; the administrative office person who was sharing space with a cat (who needed a little extra reassurance) was very personable and so kind to the cat who liked me enough to come home with me! Everyone I saw there obviously cares about the animals and to be perfectly honest, I'd rather that the animals waiting for homes are shown more attention than me or anyone else roaming through the building, so complaints of poor customer service are of little consequence to me. Acknowledge me and I'm good! The adoption process was simple, the staff is good, and I'm sold. Go and find a friend for life! read more

I hate the new place. Why ? Because it has taken the interaction with the animal right out of the equation unless you ask for a visit. The cats are all separated where they use to be able to interact. They all seem sooo depressed. The interacting living allowed more connection with an animal you might want to choose because they came over for an ear rub or back scratch now they live behind closed walls barely able to sniff a finger. Worse for the dogs you can't get a finger in anywhere while they sniff and cry at the bottom of their prison cell. No connection allowed again. The space the staff occupies could house so many more animals...the adoption fee has become a fee that most pay for fancy pedigree animals. Obviously the MSPCA is now a business and not truly a place that cares about animals that need a home. Depressing!! read more

I am so impressed with the MSPCA health clinic. I took a cat in and received a very affordable neuter price and it happened very quickly. Melinda was patient with my many questions and seemed to really enjoy working with her animal patients. This is a great place and I am thankful for their help! read more

So, I've seen three very nasty reviews here. I'm here to say that I foster cats and kittens from the shelter, and I can attest to the fact that these animals are getting proper medical treatment and attention and they are well observed. They will bend over backwards to help and if you showed up right before close, they were probably settling the animals down for the night, and their job is to take care of the animals.The staff is wonderful and I can only guess that people who think the staff was rude, probably should look to their own attitude. read more

So 2 years,ago I lost my beloved Siamese cat who was my love and best friend of 16 years it was a painful emotional time for me I swore is never get another cat.About 6months later my daughter finds this ginger girl online at the MSPCA she begs me to go see this cat and convinces me to adopt her and give her the warm loving home that my little Siamese did.When I first met Clover it was live at first sight then I'm informed was,surrendered because of a skin allergy and would I be willing to take that on. Ok I have a great vet.What I wasn't told was that she,had the feline herpes virus a year of vet visits and 2,000.00 in bills later, she was unable to be saved and once again I had to euthanize a cat . They need to disclose this kind of information to potential adopters. If they gave her an exam no way would they not have caught this.I think it's very irresponsible and cruel on their part to put a family thru this kind of heart ache dejavue all over again... read more

I also had a bad reaction on visiting this mspca center It is dirty and unkept. The viewing yard was filled with old dog toys chewed up. Obvioulsy, this was not just a frequent problem, but total neglect! Then to top it off the woman who was supposed to help us was rude. We went back the next day hoping to encounter another person to help us and this time after filling out adoption papers where told that we could NOT adopt because we lived over 20 miles away. Read about a pet available for adoption online, and based on her description she was a perfect fit. Went in, met her, fell in love. One staff member told me to fill out an application, while a second looked me up and down and said no, they don't do applications. Third staff member said the animal wasn't available and contradicted several other things in the animal's online description. Overall the experience was frustrating and off-putting. Guess I should have worn my diamonds and pearls instead of sneakers and blue jeans. read more

This is the worst shelter I've ever been too. Extremely rude staff, dishonest and deceptive. The animals are treated poorly there and not well observed or medically neglected. I volunteered at this MSPCA for 3 years and the staff and volunteers really care about the animals. So The MSPCA in Centerville is wonderful in that way (for NOT a no-kill shelter). However, the director ( of about 1 year) and one of the employees ( of about 1 year) and two of the volunteers need to work on being polite and freindly to people. read more

My dog of 12 years was laid to rest the other day. Having much of his toys, bedding, blankets and food still around, I wanted to donate it, to be able to still be used. I called this location about a 1/2 hour before they closed on today (Sat.), no answer so I took a gamble and drove by. I did review the comments here, but assumed I wouldn't have to deal with it, I was very wrong. 3 people were in the office, 1 very old wearing a blue coat and sat behind the desk (I wasn't sure if she sat b/c of health issue or not, and didn't want to ask) the other 2 were clearly the 'workers' getting whatever needed to be done so they could leave in a timely manner.) Given it was almost 1/4 of by this point, I spoke w/ the elderly woman behind the desk and explained about wanting to donate some toys, bedding & food to dogs they had in back (I had also been thinking about volunteering and wanted to 'look' at this as one of the options) Her demeanor was very poor, almost to a point where I felt bad for her. I asked if I could meet some of the animals to give the toys too and she recited an excuse that she had clearly said 10,000 times in a 'you are wasting my time' tone. I creativly asked again, figuring that being a person who was going to donate, must in some way be able to meet who I was donating too, but she wouldn't have it at all. It's not that she said no, it's just the way she did it. She seemed like a bitter person and after talking w/ her at length, I found it easier to stop the conversation and leave the donations outside. Maybe she was fired from Wal Mart, I'm not sure, but her attitude is terrible and for the animals sake, I hope it doesn't rub off. read more

Although this is a decent place to get a pet, I think that their PR department needs to step in. This is NOT a 'no kill' shelter, which means if you're looking to adopt a pet it is a good place to stop if you'd like to save an animals life. However, the shelters volunteers have no problem lying and claiming that the shelter is 100% no kill. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Please do you research before dropping off a pet to have them re-home. If you must re-home, bring your pet to a true no kill shelter or try to find a home for them yourself. The MSPCA clearly states when you call that your first move should be to re-home on your own, but the shelters volunteers are uninformed and push people to surrender their pets under the promise that they will find new homes and keep pets forever. The MSPCA needs to educate their volunteers and teach them what they can and cannot tell people outside of the shelter. This is unfair and deceptive to pet owners who are already going through a tough time. read more

i adopted my cat from this shelter about 16 years ago, he is very cute but i think his meow box is broken. he also has trouble seeing and often stares at walls thinking they're people, he also is very deaf and doesn't know his own name. although his disabilities he was able to regrow his ear once when he got it bitten off by a local coyote. he's an orange cat. read more
