Three stars because this is the only pet ER open 24/7 on the Cape... and the vets we dealt with were knowledgable, communicative, and helpful (Thank you Dr. Stark for your compassionate advice). But be forewarned, if you don't have pet insurance, it's costly here. Our bill for 48 hours of overnight care and multiple tests was over $5000. (fortunately we had insurance). Our dog didn't make it...and during her final moments, they offered to make a paw print. In between tears and heartbreak, we emphatically said please do. And after some time when we didn't get the paw print, I called and learned that they lost it. Something that can never be replaced. Considering the grief of losing a beloved pet, I'd expect more sensitivity and care. read more

We had to have an animal euthanized. They were flexible in fitting us in same day and for that I am appreciative. The Doctor who did the actual procedure was very sensitive, professional, and made the experience as painless as possible for not only the animal, but for us. However, the assistant who is responsible for letting the doctor know when the family is ready for the procedure, and who is also responsible for taking the animal after the procedure, seemingly had no sympathy. She kept coming in every 10 minutes while we were spending final time with the animal before AND after the procedure, asking us if we were done yet. This was extremely unprofessional and they should not be in the health care field if they do not understand bedside manner. I called the next day and talked to a receptionist who understood how what that staff member did, was completely unacceptable. They apologized and informed me they would bring all of this to a managers attention, and that I will receive a call from a manager to talk about this experience. It has been 4 weeks and no phone call. I'm am disheartened to know that management does not seem to care enough about this experience their staff member created to call back even just to apologize. read more

I have had two emergency situations with 2 different dogs and they were wonderful. We had to put one of them to sleep in the middle of the night and they were immediately responsive and compassionate. Most recently my vet found a peri-anal lipoma in a tricky place during a regular routine exam and we went there for the removal surgery. Dr Ulfelder performed the surgery perfectly. I can highly recommend CCVS! CCVS handled the end of life experience for my dog, Bix, and for me perfectly. It was devastating to learn that Bix had such significant health issues that it was time for him to leave us. I had to carry him into the facility and minutes after I got there a technician saw the shape he was in and politely asked if she could take him to get some relief (he couldn't breathe well). I handed him over. The paperwork was efficient and fast. WIthin a very short time a very nice technician said that if we'd come into a private room (my sister was with me), the doctor would be in to explain the situation with Bix. She was in very soon and she explained his serious issues and what could be done but with significant risk since he was 14. It was clear it was time to say goodbye to him. Dr. Kim Christy was enormously sensitive, kind and accommodating. She supported me in my decision though had presented the information very "objectively". We were asked if we wanted to hold him while he was sedated and then when he got the shot to stop his heart. I said yes to both. In another pleasant private room Bix was brought in (with an oxygen mask) and laid on my lap. It was horrible but Dr. Kim made it as pleasant as it could be and even took the blanket from the floor and laid it on my lap so that Bix would be comfortable and also in case he had an accident. She left us to our goodbyes and when we buzzed she came back immediately to give him the second injection and he was soon "gone." We were given a paw print and info about his cremation. Of course I couldn't stop crying then and I'm still crying now. But I will say there COULD NOT have been a better way for him to leave this earth, even if he was at home. I am eternally grateful and amazed how they made a really, really hard situation the best it could be for our Bix and for me. Of course, I can recommend them because they did EVERYTHING right. In September 2024, I took my 11.5 year old terrier, Trinity, to CCVS because she was straining to urinate so I assumed she had a blockage which required immediate medical attention. Upon arriving at CCVS that early Saturday morning, I was greeted by Dr. Fleming who proceeded to take Trinity to the exam room. She later called me into a private room where she told me that based on the initial exam she thought something more "sinister" was going on with my dog and told me she suspected cancer, but was about to complete an ultrasound to be sure. I was so upset by this news that I called a dear friend who drove to CCVS to provide me with support. After waiting about an hour, she advised me that my dog did not have cancer but had bladder stones which were obstructing her urethra and required surgery. She then handed me an estimate that ranged between $9200-$11000. I almost fainted looking at this document and proceeded to tell her that I would be forced to euthanize my pet because I couldn't come close to affording this high cost surgery. She then returned with a second estimate ranging between $6800-$8200. Although I felt this was still a very high price, I gave the okay to proceed with the surgery because she said I would be putting Trinity's life in jeopardy if I took her home and waited for my own vet to reopen on Monday to perform the surgery. Dr. Polit was the surgeon in charge and Dr. Anstead was the overnight vet. To this day (January 2025), my dog still isn't right. She continues to squat constantly and leaks urine frequently. I have contacted CCVS on multiple occasions and have spoken to many individuals including Dr. Kerrigan who recommended I return to have my dog scoped. I have also taken my pet to her own veterinarian who has run cultures on her which have shown she is testing positive for E-Coli and has been put on several different types of antibiotics. I complained about the price gouging to Sarah in the Customer Care department who was rude and callous and told me that after speaking to the medical director, they have decided nothing was done wrong and no money will be reimbursed after the grand total of the $7000 I ended up paying for my dog's surgery. I requested to speak to the medical director directly, but was told that would not be possible so I then requested to speak to Sarah's supervisor, Jess Larivee, who I later spoke to and reiterated what Sarah had told me and mentioned that a third-party insurance company, Zuric, would be reviewing my case and reaching out to me. This was about a month ago and I have still not heard from them. After speaking in depth with my independently owned veterinarian, he advised me he does not recommend CCVS to his clients should their pet need emergency attention and is outraged at the price gouging they continue to practice and instead recommends VCA Animal Hospital in Weymouth. He also told me that had he been available that day, he would've charged me around $1500 for the same surgery. It's truly appalling knowing that these individuals at CCVS prey on the emotions of pet owners who are at their mercy because a beloved pet is in distress. They are more concerned about cashing in and charging atrocious prices. I'm sure Sarah will respond to this review with some rhetoric about how their doctors are trained specialists in emergency medicine and how they need to charge these prices in order to stay in business yada, yada. My two year old Labrador Retriever needed surgery for a torn ACL. I was referred to Dr. Beaver by my Veterinarian, as he did not perform this type of surgery. The surgery and recovery went off without a hitch. The skill and compassion that Dr. Beaver, Emma, and the entire staff at the Buzzards Bay Office was superb. This place is absolutely pathetic. I have reached out numerous times this week to speak to management regarding the recent treatment of my animal, and of course no return call. It's clear they care about owners concerns as much as they care about treating animals appropriately. This isn't my first pathetic experience with this hospital and affiliates but will certainly be my last. My animals have been inappropriately treated in the past by not only removing medication they actually needed in one instance. In another prescribing an inaccurate dosage. They overcharged me, only when I questioned did they "find a mistake" and refund me. They let my cat lick herself raw after repeated complaints by me that she was still having an issue "they didn't see her licking herself". Finally when she did lick herself raw did they treat her and not charge me, gee thanks. Just let my pet be uncomfortable through it all. This last time though is just atrocious! Your hospital was the one to diagnose my pet with megacolon. She immediately went to an internal medicine Dr. in Boston for proper treatment and diagnosis. Your hospital couldn't see us for months.. In her recent diet change she got severely constipated. I brought her to your Dennis location as I hoped they would be better than your Bourne location. Sadly it was worse!! You gave her 1 enema, some fluids, and some pain meds and sent us on our way. The woman i spoke to when I called was very nice. The woman who greeted us when we got there was huffing and puffing and seemed inconvenienced we were there. We as owners are stressed enough in these situations we don't need the attitude too. Before we left I asked if she had gone and how much so I knew what to expect. I was told she didn't and maybe 24hrs. We were on day 4 already and clearly it was a problem. I did not see the X-ray that day. I saw the X-ray the following day when I took my animal to Boston for proper treatment. I could have brought her back and had no recheck fee it wasn't even worth it. That is how awful this place is. I would rather pay again and drive from the cape to Boston after giving this place $800 the day before to literally do nothing. Your hospital and Dr should be ashamed to have let my animal leave that day without proper treatment. Boston took one look at the X-ray and admitted her for overnight. She needed IV fluids not subq as she was severely dehydrated. She needed more than one enema , not one and some miralax. The fact your Dr. actually suggested miralax after seeing that X-ray is concerning in itself!!! I have spent thousands at your hospitals over the years, because I care and want what is best for my animals, it is too bad you don't as well. To anyone that read this far keep driving. I called and said my puppy wasn't himself . They said bring him in . I take him there and arrive at 850pm ! At 910 pm the vet said there is no way to save his life that he isn't going to make it . No blood work nothing ! Just said his gums are pale and he is going to die . You have to euthanize him . He was 10 months old and healthy . I am devastated that they weren't even willing to see what was wrong !!!!! Our family is at loss here and we of course we're still charged the fee . Sad ! Wish I could give this horrible place zero stars. Taking my dog to this facility is a decision I will always regret. We took my dogto Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists on June 12, 2002. We thought he needed to be expressed and I couldn't do it. The vet, a red-haired woman, expressed him, BUT DIDN'T TELL ME SHE USED A CATHETER. We told her we were planning on taking Cobi to Eddie's Wheels the next day for a quad. She said, go ahead. REALLY? Take a dog who is unable to pee or be expressed away? Isn't that a serious condition? The answer is yes. Yes, it was serious and he was dying. On Monday, June 13, we went back to Cape Cod Specialists because he wasn't eating or peeing. The vet decided he must have an UTI and put him on antibiotics, water to hydrate and inserted a catheter. Tuesday morning we got a call around 2:30 am to tell us that our dog was dying and we should say goodbye or to INTUBATE him. What a sick and twisted thing to do to an animal. It should be illegal. These people are disgusting money grubbing pieces of shit. So his poor heart/lungs was filled with water. We said goodbye. Of course, we were charged 1000's when he should have been put to sleep from the get-go. Instead, the end of his life totally sucked because these vets are all young and inexperienced and are told to sell sell sell to make buckets of money. Incredibly grateful for this place! Yes, it does seem to cost a pretty penny to bring your pet here, but in my opinion it is worthwhile to have access to 24/7 urgent care for emergency situations. I brought my cat here and the staff were kind, welcoming, and quick to see/treat her. We were in and out over the course of just a few hours. I was extremely disappointed by CCVS and their lack of compassion for animals. I brought my dog in for an emergency visit today, and they treated him like an object instead of a member of our family. They immediately labeled him as aggressive (the poor thing was terrified, they dragged him to the back for his initial assessment without so much as even offering him a pet) and wouldn't do any testing without sedation. I asked if they could just do an assessment with me in the room, as he isn't aggressive and was acting very calm around us, but it seemed very much like they were only interested in sedation to increase our bill. After being alone with them for 5 minutes, my dog was shaking, anxious, and terrified. CCVS suggested that we take him to our regular vet if he was scared (we would have loved to, but it was an emergency). I had a very bad feeling, and clearly my dog was very afraid after being alone with them for a few minutes, so we left and went to Vista in Falmouth. They didn't even want to speak with us about our decision. CCVS was just an expensive pit stop- $250.00 to terrify my dog. We left CCVS and within 5 minutes of arriving at Vista, our dog was rolling on his back giving kisses and getting belly rubs from the vet and tech. They were unbelievably kind and made sure it was a comfortable environment for our dog. He didn't so much as wince when we walked in - all of his fear was gone. They completed all of the tests (with us in the room) without any issue - no sedation needed. I can't say enough about Vista, and the difference in my dog's demeanor when treated by the Vista staff vs. the CCVS staff was night and day. While there aren't many options on Cape for emergency vet visits, I'd strongly advise anyone against going to CCVS unless it is truly the only option. read more

We started our emotional visit with great staff..all was well until the Dr came. Our purpose was a cat not eating for 3 days. The Dr said they can keep him over night for $3,000 and do "exploratory surgery" in the morning for $10,000. Nothing showed on X rays and all his vitals were great. We were not given any explanations..just very matter of a fact. We decided we would take our chances and get a second opinion. The Dr then said that he can resuscitate our cat if he stops breathing, leaving us to think the risk of leaving was very high. We left and went to Weymouth VCA, where he was given an ultra sound, kept over night, given fluids and passed what was blocking his stomach the next day. Never needing surgery and all costing less than one night stay at CCVS. We felt as though our emotions were taken advantage of at CCVS and will NEVER go back or suggest it to anyone. If you have an emergency I suggest driving the extra 30 minutes to Weymouth. read more

Had THE best experience with CCVS, and can't recommend them enough. My bloodhound puppy, Hercules, was hit by a car just before Thanksgiving this year and we initially brought to him to the South Dennis branch. He later needed to be emergency transferred to Buzzards Bay, where he was accompanied by Dr. Kunchur, and received top tier care during his stay and the beginning of his healing process in Buzzards Bay. Dr. Rahilly was an absolute lifesaver and kept me so informed every step of the way. She was kind and caring, and extremely thorough while taking care of my crazy boy. All of the nurses were also extremely accommodating in providing updates and news on how Hercules was doing in the ICU. Dr. Beaver has been amazing while we continue to get bandage/cast changes once a week. Would recommend CCVS to anyone and Hercules thanks you all for saving his life! read more

Last Friday my husband took our 14 yr old male shihtzu to the Dennis location to secure an emergency appt with the very busy double booked Dr Aubin who apparently only sees patients here on Fri. He had all of the signs of a brewing eye infection, extremely high eye pressure and blood pressure as well, and also has glaucoma. I might add that this was his only remaining eye. All of this was explained to the receptionist. He was clearly in pain and our general vet recommended that he be seen by a specialist as soon as possible. After my husband communicated the situation, the receptionist (who needs better listening skills) responded by saying that "Dr Aubin was double booked and she could offer us an appt in late July. " We ended up finding a good and concerned group in Manchester NH who acted quickly, got him in as an emergency and delivered exceptional medical attention. If you're looking for excellent veterinary eye care and a responsive team it seems that a 2.5 hr trip is the way to go. NEVO saved the day! read more

My experience left me with the feeling that they were more concerned about billable procedures than anything else. Brought my dog in for a tick bite that had swelled significantly and was causing discomfort. During his exam the Dr. noted an enlarged anal gland. After consultation which I told him our regular vet has been monitoring and the dog had been checked just two weeks previous, the Dr. had no interest in the history I was offering. Started conversation by telling my wife he's quite sure my dog has cancer but needs to do more testing that costs $1,000. Pushed hard and needed approval right away. Spent the money as most pet owners will do. Results matched everything I told him we already knew. Oh, and tick bites sometimes do that. Nothing to worry about. Later found out vet graduated in 2020. He's awful sure of himself for someone with little experience. read more

My pup Bailey (7 year old lab mix) ended up at Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists because the emergency room associated with her primary care was full and we were turned away. Bailey woke up at 3am coughing and trying to vomit and we realized she had eaten a pair of socks. I called CCVS before going to make sure they had room and was told to come right in. When we got there it was around 4am and naturally not too many people there so we were seen immediately. Everyone we interacted with was incredibly nice and had Bailey's best interest in mind (especially Barbara, who is an all star!) They talked to me about exactly what they recommended and the cost associated with each procedure. Xrays confirmed that Bailey did ingest something which she was unable to get up when the team induced vomiting. The team advised the next course of action would be to either wait to see if it passes naturally or to perform surgery. Due to the size of the socks I did not imagine her being able to pass them and did not want to have her end up with further issues. I asked for an estimate for the surgery which they were able to do up for me. Not going to lie, it was very expensive and I did have some sticker shock. They did mention that all the surgeons are board certified and my primary care vet could be cheaper. I was comforted in knowing that, although expensive, Bailey was getting the best of the best. Bailey had a successful surgery and is now at home recovering! Very thankful for the team at CCVS for saving her life! Not all care is created equal and CCVS is on the top of the list. My only suggestion for improvement is for them to seek additional third party credit providers for financing their services. The only one they carried, Care Credit, offered an interest free loan for 6 months, but that's followed by a 26.99% APR if the loan is not paid off in full within the 6 months. read more

Our dog was attacked by another dog and required emergency surgery like Friday night. We called the facility in Buzzards Bay MA. The staff was so kind. We spoke with he doctor several times. They updated us on Sidney Blu's condition and their staffing limitations after a certain time. Per our request we got her back as soon as she was ready. 3:30 AM. Recovery is going well. We will be going back two more time for post op visits. I cannot recommend them more. Yes veterinary work is very expensive but Sidney is our child so saving her life was worth every penny. This is an overdue note of gratitude for your compassionate and professional emergency care of my little Coton de Tulear on February 10th. I think it was the longest (and perhaps coldest) day of my life, after accidentally running him over as I backed out of our garage. I will never forgive myself. Thanks to the Animal Health Care staff on the Vineyard, we were given an emergency referral and ferryboat access for the car. Momo whimpered in the back seat, and I sobbed in the front seat, all the way to Buzzards Bay. Your kind staff welcomed us and provided him prompt attention upon arrival. He was examined and given the requisite tests (ultrasounds, xrays, lab work) and the pain medication he needed. Because of COVID-19, of course, I had to wait in the car, but your staff was in frequent telephone contact with me throughout the day -- and at one point encouraged me to go get some lunch, that everything was going well! It is nothing short of miraculous that Momo survived, at 17 years of age, with only soft-tissue injuries. He may be little, but he is tough! And you are wonderful! Thank you, thank you, thank you for your care of him AND me. We were able to take the last boat "home" to Chilmark that evening, and Gabapentin has carried him through the past ten days. Momo is no longer limping and no longer on meds; he bounces up the steps to the door, he's eating well, and his button eyes are bright once again. We are so grateful! Dianne Smith read more

Just this early May 2017, I brought a different dog in & in 72 HOURS MY BILL WAS $10k. YES: $10,000.00. They strung me along never really telling me what they thought was going on. They again provided NO HINT of what could be causing her vomiting, & anemia. They took several tests & blood work and sent it to the LAB. I insisted immediately that they check all chemistries to see what might be causing her to be so sick. From the time of admittance, they sporadically hinted & intimated several different theories about what might be the cause. However, that was the last of any real discussion about what was going on. Instead, over the next 2 days, they focused on only giving me reports on her immediate condition. They NEVER responded to my specific inquiries about what might be wrong. They never once offered ANY ideas as to what could be the cause of her sickness. They BLATANTLY avoided telling me that there was very likely a serious underlying cause to her condition. NEVER ONCE, explaining that the pneumonia was a by product of a serious secondary condition. INSTEAD, they STRUNG ME ALONG, encouraging me to continue treating her in hopes that the current treatment would resolve her sickness. Additionally, they never made real attempts at actively trying to strategize, evaluate or troubleshoot her symptoms & condition. Instead they sat by & "monitored" her & sent out tests to the lab which took 3+ BUSINESS days. And as a result of their failure to provide me complete transparency about her condition, she died in a hospital, heavily sedated, hooked up to catheters, monitors & a ventilator. Ultimately robbing me of the decision to bring her home & let her die peacefully in my arms in a familiar surrounding. This story actually gets worse. Because of their unwillingness to provide insight into her condition, I elected to put her on a ventilator in hopes this would allow her body to respond to the antibiotics. When the Doctor called me to tell me she had passed that night, he encouraged me to come in immediately to say my goodbyes. After he wheeled her in. I was told that during the procedure, she had bitten a vet tech. And then informed me she would have to be tested for Rabies. I told her she had a current rabies tag. The Dr is correct in diagnosis but she behaved unethically from 10am through 11pm. My dog needed emergency hysterectomy for to closed pus pocket in her uterus or she's dead of sepsis within 24 hours she told me. I asked her how much was surgery (additional $7,700 after I was charged $1,100 for x-ray, ultrasound, Hct only because I told her I'm on low fixed income). I lost count of how often she pushed, made me cry and feel guilty I didn't have and wouldn't put myself in huge debt for my dog I love but is Sr citizen for a dog (well over 8 years old. I begged her to stop but no. I went home, she told me to stay but I was physically dick from stress of her pushing me too give them additional $7,700. I was first there 10am to 2pm! I had to wait for my husband for advice. He picked me up at 7, no supper to get our dog and we waited 90 minutes and I asked 3 times at 30 minute intervals and receptionist showed boredom, wouldn't check but always said "soon" I have huge GI issues that cause new pain, anxiety and I was saying for hours for to their pressure and cruelty. They wouldn't give us or dog. Dr. Called 2 hoes later accusing me is abandoning did and they would charge be hundreds of I didn't come now but we're both sick from their advise of us. Dr lied saying she didn't know I was there to get Tilly (dog) I caught her in so many lies in her threats from her back pedaling when I told her I recorded audio and video of my neglect and advise my them. All of a sides they were student humane and wouldn't charge extra for me to get Tilly at 8am next day. Dr. Kuchner lied too me, threatened me to the point after I got off phone and took my blood pressure, it was 153/127. My PCP had me recording BP twice a day for over a week and it's the honest ever and I had stroke symptoms, tinnitus, tunnel vision, everyone's voice was tinny and far away, my heart was pounding and my left side hurt, I woke my husband up because I truly felt I was going to die and I told him to talk so I wouldn't think about my pain and beating heart and then it slowly stopped feeling like I would die after 5 more minutes. I recorded on video so you can see it was a boiler room sales pitch like they were pushing time shares! They treated 20 other pet owners equally horrible with them crying while I was there twice. Outstanding veterinary care. Yes, expensive and they want a good portion in advance, but well worth it. We brought in a beautiful 2 yr old Golden hit by car. My boy Jack was brought here because of vomiting and diarrhea. He suffered pancreatitis almost 2 years ago. Then a year ago his back legs gave up. The previous hospital said there is a blood clot somewhere that goes to hind legs but they can't find it so the smaller vessels could be blocked so he's on blood thinners. After ultrasounds and scans they still can't not find the clot. Now back to vomiting and diarrhea , he moved to Wareham and decided to take him to cape cod. They asked us if we want to do the blood work and ultrasound and I said let's do it because I thought it was pancreatitis relapse. All the blood work was negative but this hospital found the blood clot that directly before his stomach. But the blood clot also damaged his kidneys. His kidney values are off the charts. The vet said it's end stage kidney disease after we tried all the medications. And she asked us if we want to try human medication xarelto. very expensive medication but we're ordering that from Canada and half the price also every night he gets subcutaneous iv fluids under the skin. A 10-day follow-up was very remarkable. His kidney values went down about 25%. She was very impressive with us doing our part. I think this hospital is very experienced with the technology blood lab because they're the ones that found a blood clot. I know emergency appointments can be very expensive with testings but that's what you need to expect when you own an animal. They were very patient with our payment plan because we were paying $1,000, $1, 200, $1,000 and $1,500 at a time towards the outstanding balance. I think they have a lot of financial plans available for your needs. Now our boy Jack it's back to himself again hyper running around barking and bigger appetite. read more
