As my Yelp friend Bill S. wrote in 1 of his reviews (I'm paraphrasing), "Politics isn't appropriate for Yelp." I don't think he was directing that comment specifically to me (don't want to come across as too full of myself, after all), but...it could have been directed specifically to me. In reviews here and there, I think I've made my political ideation and sympathies known. Based on my reading of American history, anything positive accomplished in this country was accomplished because of progressive ideals and ideas. But Bill S.'s point is well taken. A review of a Mexican restaurant in Garfield or a gas station in Basking Ridge doesn't really need to include mention of "the orange vampire." Then again, if 1 is writing a review of MSNBC, avoiding a discussion of politics seems as impossible as avoiding a discussion of steak in reviewing a steakhouse. Needless to say, I'm heartsick over this most recent Presidential election. I think the final nail has been driven into the coffin of the American Empire. Nothing lasts forever. Imperial Rome lasted some 500 years. I guess 200-plus years is a pretty good run, in the context of history. In spite of being perceived by many in my life as overwhelmingly negative, a cynic, a nihilist...I do feel that this "noble experiment" of American Democracy, with all its flaws and failures, had much greatness in it. It's disheartening to see it so blithely pissed away. Wasn't it Pogo who said, "We have met the enemy; he is us?" Yeah. When Trump won in 2016, my thought then was that there were 3 kinds of people who voted for him-- (a) the ignorant, apathetic, imbecilic. (b) the overtly or covertly racist or (c) those who lived paycheck to paycheck, with their backs to the wall, knowing that nothing was going to change for them with Hillary Clinton and that, in their desperation, they were willing to take a chance on this "wild card" with his pancake make-up, his cotton candy hair, his vitriolic denunciations of "the Deep State" and illegal immigrants. Now? I'm not really qualified to say...I'm not a psychiatrist or sociologist...but I know the Democrats were very complicit in their own defeat. For "the most important election in history," the Democrats felt their best candidate was...an old, enfeebled Biden. When he was younger and more vigorous, he was never my idea of a great Presidential candidate. But in 2024? The party came out of its coma after the disastrous debate with Trump, but it was too late. I'm not really a regular watcher of MSNBC. For my take on the news, I watch/listen to BBC, NPR (Brian Lehrer show; On the Media), PBS (I love "Washington This Week"), or...if I'm looking for the really hard left point of view, WBAI Fm radio (which is sometimes too extreme, even for me). I watch MSNBC episodically. I don't think MSNBC is the left-wing equivalent of FoxNews. For 1 thing, they actually have reputable reporters, authors, historians, accredited authorities and professionals on as regular guests. (Fox has...Pete Doocey? Janine Pirro? Kat Timpf? Tyrus?) But they've been known to disseminate a disturbing amount of disinformation. Like the declaration...repeated over and over again...that Biden was A-OK cognitively, that his policies had the economy thriving, that he was on top of his game. For too many decades, the Democrats have been selling their party as Republican Lite. They offer no real alternative to the corporate oligarchy America has become. Even Bill Clinton, at best, was a moderate Republican. When the Republicans wanted to pass anti-labor NAFTA, and couldn't, it was Clinton who got it passed for them. Thanks, Bill. I didn't think Biden was firing on all mental cylinders in 2020, much less now. In the 2024 debate, as Trump relentlessly lied, Biden stood there staring into space, his mouth hanging open. And MSNBC and its hosts (Mika and Morning Joe in particular) kept hammering away repeatedly at the idea that Biden was a great candidate and that everything was fine. Tell that to the person buying groceries (me included). Or paying rent. Or paying bills. Was all that enough incentive to trade in Democracy for fascism, to elect a sociopathic moron as the "Leader of the Free World?" No. But the American people have spoken. Did MSNBC offer insightful analysis? Not that I saw. Towards the end of his life, Sekou Odinga, a black activist/revolutionary from the 70s/80s, was asked about his "legacy." He said, "Will I be remembered? I don't really care. Let's be real. What I care about are my children, and your children, and the children of tomorrow. I want them to study the past and learn about it and carry on. Because America has only gotten worse. It has. At some point, it's gonna fall, because all empires fall. It's on its way right now. There's not going to be any America in 50 years. There's not. And the youth of today has to be ready to pick up the pieces when that happens." We have US laws that are supposed to protect freedom of speech. What happens when those laws only apply to the party supported by most of mass media? What happens when the very media that says they protect freedom of expression, freedom of opportunity, freedom of information, freedom to belong does the opposite of their claims? When freedom of expression starts to become limited as it was in the former Soviet Union, we move closer toward widespread repression. What happens when it is the very sectors that profess to be the strongest supporters of freedom of expression suffocate it? CoVid 19 has provided me with the opportunity to do something that I haven't done since I was 16:To watch the so called "news". I'm mot sure that is any more of a blessing than it is to be required to self isolate. After there is a vaccine, I will be happy to cease monitoring TV news again. Recently, I commented on a CNN news program that presented a young girl known for not going to school as a CoVid 19 expert.. To my shock within a couple of hours, I was blocked from not only commenting on CNN but also from accessing my account. I am blocked from Youtube for expressing my freedom of speech there which turns out not to be free at all. I have either licenses, degrees or certifications in Engineering, IT, Finance, English and Communications. I pay taxes, I vote and I have never committed a crime. So, why would CNN,Youtube and Google treat me as a threat? While I am a registered Democrat, I do not support criminal activity that I've seen recently in Joe Biden who is on camera in news worldwide threatening or bribing Ukraine officials nor do I condone deliberate lies on CNN.Since my review was not on these legitimate news subjects and since it was rather mild, I am shocked at being silenced. MSNBC programming is even more horrific! The level of "news" today is not in dispute. Swedish writer Henning Mankell says of US media, "We have never seen such a flow if information and never has people known so little as today because everything has been done into fragments just look at TV news...The worst case is obviously the United States where you don't understand anything of the news. So, that is obviously a risk. And, also, words are misused very much today, very much today. But I think the words that you and I use are always be the most important communication so I think there will always be a way of cleaning up the mess." MSNBC and CNN not only break everything into fragments but also constantly repeats those fragments over and over to convince the simple minded of their views no matter how corrupt those they are supporting. Writer George Orwell said, "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." Shouldn't media be held to the same standards as the government in which they operate? They reach millions more daily than government. They may do so in China as I recently saw the same news stories on CNN as on the Chinese Communist Party network news channel. The stories were almost word for word identical. CNN does not meet that standard in the USA! I hope that my party, the Democratic party and its supporters at CNN, MSNBC, Youtube and Google will no longer block freedom of speech because the writer says something they do not want to hear. I am a jovial person who can laugh off the B.S. in this country, and I was once addicted to CNN. I enjoy watching this station because I like facts so I can draw my own conclusions. For the last month I have had my TV off more than ON working on a project, but I know I can always turn on MSNBC and get the latest updates. The thing I enjoy the most is hearing lawyers chime in with their analysis of some of the crazy activity around our country. Different points of views is the attraction to MSNBC. There is a lot to learn about the laws, and I enjoy hearing what may or may not happen. i won''t give the name, but a Federal Judge and I were born minutes apart as our mothers shared the same hospital room. As a warrior who will challenge any wrongdoing or inequity sent my way, I now believe in astrology. I love listening to lawyers break down all the shocking changes impacting all of us. My grandfather always said have a rainy day fund and I modified his advice to include always have money to retain an attorney. Watching the News, so many have had to hire attorneys to deal with the mess going on in our country - and they have had to hire their own security. It is shocking what many now have to endure just by doing their jobs. America, love it or leave it. I wish I could leave it but this virus and all the variants has knocked us all off our rockers.
