Couple months ago this place would have gotten -1 star. However they did a total makeover not only of the physical eatery but the staff too. Last time I was here the staff was super rude, ignored me and my take out was lacking. With this new management I was greeted immediately, then 2 more times. The guy taking the order was super sweet made sure I understand the difference with the Mexican coke, I tipped before I even got the meal. Like I was truly impressed, the workers were enjoying their job and it showed. The female manager didn't miss a beat.. she was working, delegating and checking in on the customers. A sizzling meal was being served with a smile to the customer 9:50 and they closed at 10:00. There were not rushing their customers out, they were still taking phone orders and pickups. Our good friends the Steiding's brought us to Mr. Taco for our first visit. The Yelp reviews were on target as this place has delicious Mexican dishes, an incredible salsa bar, fantastic service (Victor is the best), and a quaint ambience. The ordering process is fast food style at the counter and then dishes are brought to your table. The menu is loaded with options and Victor was eager to customize orders if desired. The food came out quickly and exactly as ordered. The salsa bar had about 8 freshly made salsas ranging from mild to habanero hot. We had some fajita nachos for an appetizer and they were smothered in queso and steak. The steak fajita burrito was HUGE and accompanied by rice and frijoles. Mr. Taco exceeded all our expectations. While in line, u have no view of the menu and cant choose what u want until u get to the register. After finally getting to the counter i felt rushed to make a decision. But didnt know what i wanted. I asked the cashier what most people get and she said the chimichangas or the stuffed burrito. I went with the chimichangas with rice and beans. This place is half a step up above Taco Bell. First of all, this place is in a pretty small shopping plaza, so if you come during the lunch rush, you're going to have trouble with parking. I came at around 11:30 one day and parking wasn't a big issue. Another day I came around 12:30 and the lot was packed. The lunch specials here are pretty cheap. They are basically combo plates that have different combinations of items such as tacos, burritos, enchiladas, rice & beans. They have other specials such as quesadillas. I ordered the Special #6 which is beef taco, beef burrito, & a beef enchilada. Food came out fast and it warm. At first looked great. Sauce everywhere all topped with cheese. However, after taking a bit out of everything wasn't too impressed. I couldn't differentiate the burrito and enchilada in taste. They use a red sauce on the enchilada which was ok. The beef they used tasted very low quality. I felt a little disgusting with myself after I finished everything. The food is cheap though. My other friend ordered the steak fajitas ($10.95?), pretty delicious as she ordered it a second time for lunch the following week. We love coming to Mr Taco. Ever since moving from San Diego the hunt for good Mexican food at a good price has been a challenge. We come here at least once a week. Victor always greets us with a huge smile and a gracious manner. I always try to have something different and I love the enchiladas with pork on top, the street tacos, the tostados and fajitas as well. Everything is delicious and I have never been disappointed. The salsa bar is fantastic and Thursday night trivia is fun. We started by visiting the Roswell location and sometimes go there as they are open an hour later. The people at Roswell are super friendly as well and always remember us even though we don't go as frequently. Mr Taco fills that niche between a Taco Bell and Frontera. Simple menu with your combos of tacos, burritos, enchiladas as well as fajitas and other things you wouldn't find at a fast food joint. Ah, but there's an added bonus to this place: the salsa bar. I ordered the Enchiladas Supremas - so I got an enchilada each of beef, chicken and cheese. Tasty tortillas covered in red sauce, cheese and sour cream. Cheesy goodness is a guilty pleasure of mine. Out of the 3, I preferred the chicken. Besides quick service, this place is clean too. We visited this past Saturday at about 200 pm based on good reviews on a veggie burrito. A very young man took our order and since we do not eat meat or dairy we asked what was in the veggie burrito. He said "I don't know" and made no attempt to find out. I grabbed a menu and it listed sautéed veggies, cheese, sauce, black beans and rice. We held the sauce and cheese and added avocado. Our meals came and the "burrito" was sautéed veggies wrapped in a tortilla. The black beans and rice and 3 slices of avocado were on the side. I am not sure where the disconnect lies, but this is not a burrito. We tried to roll our own which did not work and then we tried mixing it "like" a bowl but it was not a bowl either since it was on a plate. Impossible. The server seemed to ignore the confusion I clearly had on my face. We would have asked her for some extra "chips" to try to make our meal more like a meal and enjoyable. My suggestion to the restaurant to avoid this for future customers is to actually add a vegan burrito option to the menu with all of those items in the burrito or educate the person taking orders about the entrees. We witnessed friendliness bestowed on the "regulars" but it was not shared with us newbies. I think the owner was there and he went right by us and did not greet us and ask how our meal was. It could have been so much better and my review would be so different as all of this was completely avoidable. We will not be back as it was overpriced for what we got too, but thought I would give you some insight what it was like for a new customer like us. Also we gave a nice tip to the young man at the register who took our order so please pass this message to him that when someone leaves you a tip he might want to check with that new customer and see if they are happy with their meal. It would have taken just a tiny effort from the staff to rectify our $31 disappointing meal. We look on the website and finally decided on what we wanted. We called in to place our order. My coworker stated that she had to constantly repeat herself just to make sure whom ever was taking our order understood and took down everything correctly. After completion of the order our total came to $19.51. That included tax and the delivery fee. I ordered the Fajita chicken lunch special which came up to $7.75 and Erin ordered the Quesadilla Fajita Dinner which was $8.95. Delivery charge is $2. My coworker checks her account and they charged her $23.41. Erin my coworker decides to call to verify the charge. The first time she called they placed her on hold for almost 20mins. She then hung up and called back. Immediately someone picked up and she explained the situation. This place is so unprofessional they placed her on hold again for about 10mins. The whole time they're giving us the run around, stating they need the original receipt that she signed from the delivery driver. I'm confused on why they need a receipt that they should already have a copy inside the store with our total. So we hung up and our food came the receipt said $19.51 on it but we're still confused on why there was extra $4 charge on her card. Mr. Taco calls back after 20mins but here's the funny part they called claiming to speak to Comcast. Like really you guys are really trying it today. We just called you guys off this number and you return our call thinking we're Comcast. Our food was cold and nasty. There was little cut up sprinkles of chicken on my fajitas that I ordered. We all got little to none for the sour cream. As you can see in my photos the sour cream wasn't even enough to last the whole meal. I am beyond pissed and upset that I wasted my money on this horrible food. My coworker had 1/3 of guacamole and sour cream with her lunch special. Erin plans on going up to Mr. Taco after work to get answers on to why we were over charged for our meal today. You know the food at Mr. Taco was just about your average Mexican fare. Standard enchiladas, tacos, tostadas, burritos, and so forth. Even taste-wise it was pretty much standard. Based on food alone, I would've rated at a 3. What boosts their score for me is the excellent salsa bar at Mr. Taco. There are a large number of choices in salsas at all the spice levels. This was my first time and I wasn't super familiar with the menu so I went with something I knew I would be able to judge - a taco and burrito combo. Any Mexican restaurant that has a decent salsa bar stands to be my favorite Mexican place to eat. This restaurant did not disappoint at all. Not just a decent salsa bar, but it is one of the best a Mexican restaurant can have, a variety of salsas ranging from mild to hot, for a foodie's delight. The salsa bar has at least three types of salsa verdes those are delicious, besides that, more salsa rojos to chose from that are hot and flavorful, plus additional veggies. The pollo ranchero(chicken with ranchero salsa) that I ordered was hot and delicious. This dish is not very common in many Mexican places so I like that they carry it. The corn tortillas that came along with it were fresh and nice. The rice and bean was fresh and nice as well. The quantity was generous to gratify the appetite. I'm really surprised with some negative reviews on this restaurant. "OK.." , the food seems to be priced a dollar more than some similar Mexican restaurants, and their salsa cups are relatively smaller, but that does not justify such negative reviews. The quantity and quality of food, the good, clean ambience and the responsive customer service justifies the price in my opinion. This is a great, authentic Mexican place in this area. Why have I never eaten at this GEM of a Mexican restaurant before last night? I literally drive by this place on my way home every day, and I have noticed it before, hence our delightful Atlanta rush hour traffic that doesn't seem to move. The exterior view of Mr. Taco leaves a lot to be desired from a picky eater like me; this Mexican restaurant looks a tad on the divey side. Last night while sitting at the light that never turns green, I noticed it again as I heard my stomach growl. Naturally, I grabbed my phone and clicked on my Yelp app. I was happy to read the positive reviews, so I quickly took a right off Old Milton Parkway and into the tiny strip shopping center in which Mr. Taco is located. Pro's: What I "thought" would be a mediocre meal, turned out to be anything but! What a pleasant surprise when I walked into a squeaky clean, tastefully decorated establishment. Upon entering, I immediately noticed their famous "salsa bar". The salsa bar included a lot of fresh salsa choices. Although there was a line to order food, I was immediately acknowledged by Gershon, the adorable and friendly team member who took my order. Gershon was so eager to help me order the perfect item based on my request for a grilled chicken dish, his descriptions made me want to order way more than I would eat. The chicken fajita burrito was scrumptious!! Not only did it LOOK delicious, but it tasted even better!!! The chicken breast was perfectly grilled and tender. Piled on top, were mounds of fresh and crisp grilled peppers and onions (cooked just right), rice, pick de gallo, sour cream, and guacamole, for which I gladly paid extra. The side of rice and beans was delicious and authentic. I could have eaten two of these ginormous burritos. Cons: The fact that the person who appeared to have been the owner counts how many tiny salsa containers he gives out seems a little over the top to me (he will give you two containers), but perhaps others have abused this privilege. Overall: Although my meal was superb, the star of the evening was Gershon, who exhibited a genuine desire to help me choose something I would like. Mr. Taco is a regular lunch spot for me (and based on the number of people on any random weekday, everyone else in Alpharetta). Despite the popularity, service is always quick and the food couldn't be more consistent. The menu is extensive but in my observation, the most popular choices are your standard lunchtime combos - the "Speedy Gonzalez" and a slew of taco/burrito/enchilada combo plates served with rice and beans. Pricing can't be beat with the most expensive lunch combo coming in at a whopping $8.50. If you're a tortilla soup fan, I highly recommend the caldo tlalpeno, a traditional Mexican chicken soup served with a generous helping of chicken and sliced avocados. The menu describes it as "a rich combination of shredded chicken, rice, avocado, white cheese, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, and chipotle pepper in flavor chicken broth." The small bowl ($5.50) is actually a pretty large serving, and the large ($7.50) will definitely send you home with leftovers. I find that adding a few healthy scoops of the housemade pico de gallo adds just the right touch. The California Burrito ($7.50) is another great option - a massive flour burrito filled with your choice of meat, rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, lettuce, and pico de gallo. For only $0.75 more you can add guacamole (and they are not shy with their portions!). The day of this review, I tried the fajita quesadilla with beef barbacoa. (Goat barbacoa is also an option on the menu.) The 10" tortilla was filled to the brim with sauteed fajita veggies and a healthy serving of tender, savory, slow-cooked beef. Comes with a side of rice. Highly recommended. The highlight of Mr. Taco is the salsa bar. This salsa bar is the BOMB. Not only is there fresh pico de gallo, mild and spicy varieties of the ubiquitous tomato sauce-based salsa, but also a creamy avocado-based salsa and two flavors of tomatillo salsa. You can also try toreado peppers or a relish made from habaneros and sliced onions. Two thumbs up. Pro tip - the parking lot is a nightmare so go early to get a spot! read more
