We also eat there at least once a week. If we can't make in, we get a carryout order of their large chicken soup (spicy), and to go along with it, we get their cheese dip with jalapenos. I can't say enough good things about this soup. I've tried ordering it at other restaurants when we are away from our home base, but no one has yet even come close to their soup. Why go on and on about 'soup' ... well ... it's just that good!!! A large soup is enough for my wife and to split. We've been regulars there for years, and in all that time, I have never had an order that wasn't just spot on ... good food and lots of it. And the staff is great too ... attentive and always smiling. Ambience ... well it's a Mexican restaurant so unless you are a regular like us, you probably wouldn't want to propose to your life-mate there ... but it is clean and occasionally noisy when there is a large group enjoying themselves and a few adult beverages. In my opinion, the food is sometimes delicious and sometimes just ok, however, I have a lot of friends and family who deem this the best Mexican food around. They admittedly have outstanding fajitas and I like their refried beans, which is like, not something I usually enjoy. I think it's because they put their queso on top (as they do for almost every dish. The problem, though, is the service. It's terrifying. The takeout is equally tragic. I recommend triple-checking that they've given you the correct order before leaving. Overall, a place with a lot of potential, hopefully, they'll soon live up to it. read more

The place was crowded so we sat at the bar. We ordered some Chiro Cheese as an appitizer and then a "Texas bowl", and I had the Rib-eye and Shrimp with Rice and beans and totillias. App was fine. Food was cold. Ice cold to the touch. I asked then to touch it and explain WHY it was so cold and no tortillias? They took it to the back and stuck it in a microwave and broght it back hot and rubbery and said, "Enjoy" Not exactly what I call good customer service nor is that proper edicate for returning a plate. I went with Europeen friends who were Jonesing for the "variety" of cuisines they can't get back home, and they seemed to feel that the experience at El Potrillo could carry them for another year or so, when they return. This restaurant has a great atmosphere when inside. Our server was attentive at first then here and there later on. The drinks are pretty strong. Our queso came out hot, unfortunately our entrees came out different. I saw our food in sit in the window for a solid 5 or 7 minutes. I saw a couple employees walk right past it. By the time we got our food the beans were cold and the rice was room temperature. My tacos were luke warm. I could tell the restaurant was getting busier however I couldn't tell if our server was too. So we just got the check and went home. No bueno. I knew the ratings (at the time) were only 3.5 stars going in, so, the expectations weren't all that high, especially for a hole-in-the-wall in Roswell. What we didn't know was that food could be THIS bad. The best part of the meal was when the check came--including the possibility that it and the receipt probably tasted better than the food. Seriously, it was THAT bad. ALL of it: -- Salsa: Not fresh, too sweet, and a bit chemically. Presumably not made from scratch, and if so, canned tomato sauce overwhelms it (Also, when I went to the restroom, I passed a platter with uncovered/unrefrigerated bowls of salsa, which apparently sit there until they are brought to tables.) -- Carnitas enchiladas: Inedible. The carnitas were rancid. The tortillas were stale. The beans were more of a drippy liquid with NO flavor. -- Steak burrito: Same as above...and instead of bright colors for the veggies, they were all kinda dark and sad. We each ate only a few bites and pushed the plates away. You'd think or hope the server would have noticed this (especially after we didn't want to make our food "to go") and asked if everything was OK, but, my suspicion is he knew it was terrible and probably glad we were polite, sign the check, leave a proper tip, and go away. Now I'm reading about how they have pitifully low cleanliness scores. What gives? It can't be because they are too busy procuring and preparing fresh ingredients and experimenting with authentic and exciting recipes! read more

I came here one time more than a decade ago and wasn't impressed. Then maybe 6 months ago we were on a bit of a time crunch as a family and decided to give it a try. We were pretty happy overall. Food was decent, cheap, and server was attentive, I would have said 3-3.5 stars then. That was initially enough to win me back. As I write this it's my 3rd time after that positive experience and the two prior were lackluster at best. Tonight the server came to my table to take my order and that the last I've seen of him. He's on the floor but has not ventured over here again. I've got no drink, the cheese dip was not hot enough, the steak in my fajitas was way overdone, under seasoned, and way more grisly than acceptable. It also arrived with no sizzle. I've eaten, drank and typed this entire review without seeing him. Sad. As an update he did finally come by once my daughter and I were sitting there with our plates stacked up. He offered me a refill which I declined and asked for the check. He dropped off the check and quickly took off again, so long in fact that I got up and asked someone at the register to cash me out. They declined but did go find him. To sum this place up, food is hit or miss, there's always a lot, but it may not be tasty. I'm sure my server must have been the worst one they have, but I wouldn't expect much more. They've been there for at least 15 years, so somehow they survive. The flavor was a bit bland, but the chicken was cooked properly. The rice was good. My chips and salsa tasted good and salsa refills are free. I poured some of my salsa onto my taco and burrito to try and make them more flavorful.. I'm not if I'd order the same entrée (#5 from lunch menu) if I return, but the price was ok at $5.99 for the lunch portion.. I will continue my search for a good local Mexican restaurant.. read more

We stopped by this place because we were visiting family in the area. I ordered the steak(medium)and shrimp. My sister ordered the steak that was on the main page of the menu as well as our 3 boys. My food came out luke warm and piled high full of mushrooms on top of a well done steak. I let the server know the shrimp were missing. He took the plate and they threw a few shrimp and queso cheese on top. I got it back and tried to eat it. My food lacked flavor and was bland. I don't know who they thinks need that many mushrooms on top of a steak. I sent it back. My sister was starving so she finished hers but was not happy with it. These guys have been around since 2000 when I moved in my house up the street. There chicken tortilla soup is the best I have ever had. You've got to try that soup if you like chicken soup. Their tacos are also really good whether you like flour or corn tortilla they're always coming out piping hot. If you'd like the margaritas and order the skinny, it's much better than their premade margaritas. The service is excellent and all of the waiters do you speak English there, so that's a good thing. My folks have been coming here for more than five years when they moved to the area. There are a lot of people working at once. It can be very loud on busy nights but you still feel that the people working care. They have a bar side and a restaurant side. They have a a pretty large menu. For my first time coming it was nice to know my folks were taken care of on a regular basis. Also they were open during the shelter and place. After failing their health inspection spectacularly with a 55 in early December, they supposedly have corrected their refrigeration and other problems to bring up their score to an 89. We thought we would give them a try, since Now is the time- we were wrong. Although the food tasted pretty well at the time and they gave us ample supplies to take home, I am now paying the price with Montezuma's revenge.
