They donate twenty percent of proceeds from sales to fund a nonprofit program established to help refugees and their children [http://www.fugeesfamily.org/index.htm] and their staff is comprised of program graduates and their parents. Completely amazing and inspiring, like I can't stop saying. These are tamales wrapped in warm fuzzies. That said - and the purpose of a food review - is to comment on what's past the warm fuzzies and inside the corn husks. And on that front, I thought they missed the mark. The shredded chicken tamal I experienced was dry, incredibly bland, and doused in overreaching spicy sauce, which did nothing to redeem its mediocrity. My parents, both of whom raised me on a a hard line There Are Children Starving in Africa- Finish Your Peas approach, and believe it immoral to throw out food, could barely finish theirs. Our group had 4 chicken tamales and 1 vegetarian and no one walked away satisfied. We are of adventurous palates and spiciness isn't really an issue for us. It was a matter of not having much flavor to begin with and then masking it with heat. I found the spice to be a heavy handed afterthought , instead of intrinsic to a robust flavor profile. It was like sprinkling cayenne on sliced white bread. Yeah, it's hot, but it's not really yummy. It seems lots of other folks like their offerings, though, and that does some to alleviate the guilt I feel over not being able to finish the tamal and delivering a less than stellar review. The remaining guilt will likely lead me to try out the tacos.

PS: That's the name of their food truck. I'm not actually talking about someone who works there. :) $2.50 tamales?! Yes, please! Today I had the chicken and spicy pork. Apparently that was the most popular combination because that's all I heard other people order. They also have tacos. I need to do a little more research to see if they're corn or flour tortillas (I prefer corn).

Who knew that Koreans owned Mexican groceries? Anyway, this lady is out in the front of Taco Market with a bunch of coolers. I have no clue if she's associated with Taco Market. She does look Asian; maybe she's the owner! She sells corn and tamales straight from the cooler. This is straight up Mexican street food here. The corn is grilled and topped with mayo, cheese, and ancho chili powder. I didn't have it, but it looked awesome. Sure, the corn looked good. But when I found out she sold tamales as well, I immediately jumped on the chance to get one. Thanks to Pheeby B.'s Spanish speaking skills, she was able to snag us some tamales. She had pork and chicken tamales. And they were cheap. They only cost $1.25 each. I felt like I was in Mexico again with prices that cheap. I tried the chicken tamale, and they tasted good. I was disappointed that they weren't as moist and succulent as the ones I had in the streets of Mexico. But they tasted better than the crap they serve at Tex-Mex restaurants here in Atlanta. I think for $1.25, you can't go wrong with these homemade tamales. So if you see this woman hanging out in front of some coolers, try some corn and tamales. I have no clue if she speaks English though. So you might have to get a Spanish speaker or bust out the Spanish yourself.

Parking in the daily area at the Brookhaven Marta Station is permissible and free and easy, but expect a 15 min walk to the festival entrance. Seriously, it is a HIKE up Apple Valley just to get there. Tickets are reasonably priced: $5 if you paid in advance, $10 at the door and this entitles you to a wristband to prove that you are a paying attendee and you get a spoon for all of the little sample cups of chili you would like to try. You can enter the festival without paying and if you are not really a chili person, but are attending with others who will be more likely to get their money's worth, I say, don't pay and just walk in and explore. The festival has very LONG hours - from 11 am to 7 pm, so one would expect that you could go most anytime in the afternoon and be able to try a variety of the chili cookoff entries, but nope, almost everything was completely gone by 1:30 or 2 pm, so go early! Beer lines were very long early in the day, perhaps as many as 40 people in line, so that was a slow process. These did clear up later and the price for a 16 oz beer was fair at $5. There were 3 live bands who performed and the caliber of music was good, so an enjoyable backdrop to the festival. Overall, a fun fall event for a short while if you are in the area, or really like chili!

For just $5 you got unlimited tastings of restaurant and home-prepared chilis, and after three trips through the various lines I definitely feel I got my money's worth. They plan on having more eating areas set up in the shade for next year and trying to expand to offer more things to do before and after the chili tasting hours, but there was a good turnout for a first time event, especially considering it was competing against Music Midtown. I do plan on coming back next year!
