It definitely lived up to expectations (and for a to-go lunch, that's saying A LOT!). So many people throw around the word 'authentic' but this place is the real deal. they've got a daily fish special (even have Akamutsu as an offering.....real indication of a true sushi joint) and a menu offering izakaya options that are hard to be found at other japanese restaurants. We got some rolls and ebi tempura udon to go. Speaking to japanese attention to detail, each to-go bag came with a hard cardboard cut out at the bottom of the paper bag to prevent spilling/caving through. Utensils packed were good quality disposable chopsticks, and for each portion of sushi there was a ramikin of wasabi, ginger, and both regular and low sodium soy sauce packets. and this sounds silly but high quality napkins included in the to-go as well. the rolls came with great generous portions of fresh fish. but what super surprised me was the ebi udon. the ebi tempura were HUGE. REAL DEAL TEMPURA, FRIED IN HOUSE. alot of places just get those frozen ones that are skinny but tiny...these ones are massive, and well worth the price. the udon soup came with wakame too. i called ahead to order and they quoted me 15 min, however it took about 25 min for me to have the order in my hands. no big deal, but even during a weekday lunch the restaurant (albeit on the smaller side) was 70% full so they were prob pretty busy. can't wait to come back and try this place in earnest later!

I made a reservation for three people at 12:00 p.m. to celebrate my friend's birthday. One of my friends arrived early, and unfortunately, the experience started off poorly. While waiting at the bar, he was never greeted. He eventually flagged someone down to order a drink, but the employee never came back. I arrived around 12:03 p.m., and when he told me what happened, I initially brushed it off as a one-off situation. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a preview of how the rest of our experience would go. When I arrived, we were seated in the back and told that CJ would be our server and would be with us shortly. My friend and I were catching up while waiting for our other friend to arrive, so we didn't immediately realize that we had not been greeted, given menus, or offered water. When our other friend arrived, she was told that we were seated in the back, but no one walked her back to our table or showed her where we were. She had to find us herself. We sat there for approximately 10 minutes before I finally had to flag someone down just to get water and menus. At that point, we had still not been acknowledged by our server. What made the situation even more frustrating was that we could clearly see our server, CJ, serving the two tables next to us while completely ignoring our table. Then, a party of six sat down, and CJ immediately went to their table. We had already been sitting there for approximately 25 minutes at this point. I finally got up and asked to speak with a manager. Shortly afterward, CJ came to our table. I explained to him that we had been sitting there watching him serve the tables around us without acknowledging us. His response was, "I just got here." That was simply not true. We had watched him for approximately 20 minutes serving other tables, walking around the restaurant, and repeatedly passing by us. He then immediately went to serve the table that had just sat down. When I asked again to speak with a manager, three employees went over to a man sitting at the bar, but instead of sending a manager or supervisor to address our concerns, they sent the host, Fiona. She was neither a manager nor a supervisor. At no point did anyone take accountability for what happened or make a genuine effort to address our concerns. We were three African Americans who came to this restaurant to enjoy sushi and celebrate our friend's birthday. Instead, we were repeatedly ignored while watching other customers receive service around us. Based on the way we were treated, we left feeling that we had been discriminated against. I understand that restaurants can have busy days, and I understand that mistakes happen. What I do not understand is being completely ignored, watching other parties receive service before us, having to flag someone down for basic necessities like water and menus, and then not having our concerns taken seriously when we finally spoke up. This was not the experience I expected, especially considering I had previously been to this restaurant twice. Unfortunately, based on what happened yesterday, I will not be returning. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. No customer should feel ignored, disrespected, or discriminated against when they are simply trying to enjoy a meal and celebrate a special occasion. 0/10.

The first thing you need to understand about this place is that the food is *impeccable*. I will get back to this later. The second thing you need to understand is that this is a relatively small restaurant whose quality is broadly recognized. Getting a seat here on the weekend for dinner is not a quick endeavor-- expect to have to wait for a table and plan your evening accordingly. Look inward and ask yourself, "Am I capable of a little patience?" If the answer is truly "Yes", then you are absolutely in for an amazing treat for having discovered Mr. Max. It is hard to know where to start when describing the food. The menu is extensive and star-studded. When ordering, I strongly suggest getting a variety of things for the table to share so that you can all try everything. Be on the lookout for any items that include cod roe-- the chefs prepare it with an amazing, slightly spicy house sauce that puts this otherwise common element far and above the competition's. For appetizers, the Takoyaki is the cream of the crop. The Chef's Choice of 3 is another great option-- you'll likely end up with at least one that you wouldn't have thought to order otherwise, and they all absolutely slap. I have no specific entree recommendations-- follow your heart, and you won't be disappointed. Everything is excellent. If you want to try some sashimi, the rice sandwiches go really well as an accompaniment. For as long as I could speak, people have asked me what my favorite restaurant is. I've always thought it was a silly, impossible question. How is anyone supposed to compare all the wildly different options? There are so many types that are just too different. I had a favorite pizza place, a favorite taco place, a favorite upscale place, favorite fast food-- to pick just one would be impossible and meaningless. For the first 27 years of my life, I adamantly believed this. Then my friends took me to Mr. Max. I've been here twice now, and I am certain: this is my favorite restaurant. read more

Hands down one of the best Japanese restaurants in DFW. I'd say it ranks #2 on my list. We had to wait at least an hour as the restaurant already had several reservations for the night, but the food was definitely worth the wait. If the bar seats become available, take them!!! You don't want to pass up a delicious meal at Mr. Max. I looked over the menu while waiting and had about 5-6 dishes marked to order. Knowing I wouldn't be able to eat that many dishes, I ultimately chose 2. Luckily, I had 3 hungry friends dining with me. We ordered about 10 dishes to share and left very, very satisfied. [We didn't get a chance to try the ramen because they sold out. Boo!] Our dinner: 1. Grilled shisamo smelt - 2 deliciously grilled smelt 2. Salted squid guts - if you love squid, you'll love this dish 3. Fried chicken cartilage - be sure to squeeze the lemon! 4. Mentai cucumber with sesame - a refreshing cucumber dish with a kick of spice 5. Niku-japa - mmmm potatoes. So flavorful 6. Rice curry & curry udon - Favorite favorite favorite! 7. Grilled mackerel - perfectly grilled fish. A great dish to share 8. Assorted sashimi - beautiful presentation 9. Karaage rice bowl - crispy chicken on a bed of rice I don't recall the last dish, but nonetheless, our meal was amazing. Do not worry about trying to Google translate before your visit because there IS an English menu! The staff, very friendly and polite, let us know that Monta Ramen will open this Spring! One of the best Japanese restaurants in the DFW area. Was blown away by their spicy garlic tonkotsu shoyu ramen and their various small appetizers. The burdock salad was suprisingly unique in flavor and texture that keeps you coming back for more. Their karage will also entice you to order more as the first bite will give you an amazing outer fry that's extremely crispy with a juicy interior packed with flavor and tenderness. Interior design is small and warm that gives you the feeling of having a nice dinner at home or a culinary show at the bar where you can observe the chef in his own world working on each of the specialized dishes within the menu. This is the type of restaurant that you can sit and enjoy the numerous menu items while accompanied by friends and family alike. Overall, I'm NOT an ACYE person bc I overeat and then feel like death because I'm too cheap to pay for leftover rice or a leftover roll but this place is solid! For someone who "eats everything" you would give it a 5/5. In a pain and don't like many things lol so my 4 is basically a 5!

Fish quality was perfect and my personal favorite to accompany that was their miso soup; it tasted fresh and very aromatic, unlike the usual powdered soup I've had elsewhere. I also got the udon noodle soup and it was great as well!! Price point is standard compared to your average pricing for AYCE sushi. We will definitely be back!!
