Walked in and immediately felt at home. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and our table was ready quickly. We started with the Who Dat Shrimp, and it was delicious. The bacon was perfectly crisp and the shrimp had great flavor. They also brought us each a complimentary meatball with garlic bread, which was such a nice touch, and both were delicious. For dinner, I had the filet, which was cooked perfectly and very well seasoned. The potatoes au gratin were fantastic, crispy on the outside and perfectly cheesy inside. My husband had the ribeye with mushrooms and loved his meal as well. Great food, welcoming atmosphere, and a completely enjoyable experience from start to finish. We will definitely be back! read more

Everything about this place was amazing! We came here for our anniversary, and they made the experience extra special by bringing out a cake for us. The servers treated us like family, and the food was delicious. We arrived a little close to closing time, but they still welcomed us and treated us so well. The hospitality really stood out and made our night memorable. We'll definitely be back! read more

This was a bad decision, especially one made on our anniversary. It was raining but we drove over an hour to try this place out that the hubs found on social media. SOMETHING told me it wasn't gonna be good because it's hard to please a Chicagoan when it comes to food. I'm a HARD critic but decided to go with it. I'd taken a look at the menu before I made the reservation, so I knew I was going to try the onion rings. They're made with purple onions and Crystal's hot sauce. They were different but good. Then they brought out this little meatball and some bread. Both they could've kept. Neither were good. We both got ribeyes and mac n cheese that they call Freddie's Mac n Cheese. It's made with sausage, breadcrumbs and AGAIN Crystal's hot sauce. It was HORRIBLE, all I tasted was breadcrumbs. And the steaks were really bad cuts, they seem to be sliced really thin like they took one and made two. They had no flavor but char. The hubs said even his signature drink "green tea (the alcohol version) was watered down. All that on top of having to go into the hallway and use the elevator to wash my hands because they seem to not have a restroom inside the place or they didn't want us to NVM. Total disappointment and waste of a drive and $200. read more

First off let me state that I have been here and loved the food and atmosphere and used to recommend it to friends and family. With that being said, I sent a friend in there for his anniversary celebration. The waiter treated them completely different than the other couples seated next to them. He had reservations and upon arrival, he was told he didn't have a table ready but would seat them. They say in a corner table barely large enough for their plates. I told him that I was going to leave this review because based off of his experience, I know there was a certain reason they were treated this way...fill in the blanks as you see fit. Despite being treated poorly, he tipped his waiter, ate his poorly cooked meal and left. Monday morning he told me about his experience and I apologized for recommending it. NEVER AGAIN. Mr John's need to do better. We are not in the antebellum era. read more

This is an ideal spot for a date night, business meal, or for anyone looking for a must have experience! Served on a sizzling hot plate, their USDA Prime steaks are fantastic! You have to try turtle soup when you're in New Orleans, and Mr. John's delivers! The drinks are perfectly refreshing and the Who Dat shrimp was a great way to start your experience! read more

Enjoyed my birthday dinner with friends! I made a large reservation for 13 guests, which meant we had to order from the limited pre-fixed menu ($100 per person). I knew this in advance. They also let us have the semi-private section for no additional cost. We started off with drinks at the bar. While the drinks tasted good, they were on the lighter side, so I had my next round made as a double. Service throughout the evening was great, so attentive and friendly, and all our food came out together, which I really appreciated. For appetizers, we had the meatballs and onion rings. The meatballs and onion rings were flavorful. I also tried the turtle soup, I wasn't a fan but everyone else at my table enjoyed it. My partner's Caesar salad was good. For my entrée, I had the ribeye, which was cooked perfectly. Could've used a bit more salt. The sides, mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and creamed spinach were good. The had about 5 servers bring out our food at the same time. They were on it!Overall, the service was excellent. They did wave $5 cake-cutting fee which I appreciate. I look forward to coming back and will try the regular menu. read more

Mr John's was our place for our company dinner after a long day at the conference. We were greeted with a friendly smile and quickly brought to our table. Our server was simply amazing! Very informative about the menu items along with the daily specials. He answered all of our questions and even joked around with us and kept the mood light. We also celebrated a birthday and were surprised with a delicious meatball appetizer with the birthday boy having a candle with his. After dinner, again, we sang a second Happy Birthday as our birthday boy was given a slice of tiramisu birthday cake. On with the food!!! Apps were very tasty! As you will see in the photos, we shared them and very happy with the flavors. Our main courses consisted of several cuts of beef and a fish dinner. Not a single complaint on the meats and the various sides that we ordered and again shared. The pictures will do the talking! I can talk to my Ribeye done medium and perfectly served on a hot plate. Juicy, wonderful color, and wonderfully tender! Perfection! As far as the space, the dining area was comfortable. The space was intimate, lots of wood adorned the walls, pillars, and crown moulding. Photos of famous individuals were hung on the walls. If you have the chance to, go here!!! You won't be disappointed by the food and service. read more

A classic steakhouse - Mr. John's definitely does it well. We came here to celebrate our anniversary and got the celebratory meatball with a candle! We ordered the sizzling lump crab cake and the beef carpaccio. Both delicious, both worth it. My husband had the surf and turf while I had the petite filet. Both steaks were cooked to a perfect mid rare and the lobster came with a whole tin of butter that stayed melted with a candle. It was an intimate place and our servers were very nice. It's similar to most classic steakhouses that you can think of. Certainly wouldn't mind coming here again one day but there weren't aspects to the place that wowed me more or less than others like it. read more

Dinner at Mr. John's Steakhouse felt like a proper occasion, which was fitting since we were celebrating the 19th anniversary of my wife's 21st birthday. From the start, the service was on point. Our server Tony was friendly, prompt, and attentive without hovering. A nice touch right out of the gate was a complimentary birthday meatball, which set the tone for the night. We started with the turtle soup and the crab cake. The turtle soup was lighter than expected in a good way. Tomato based, almost reminiscent of a minestrone in flavor, with a noticeable but not overpowering spice kick. The chopped egg added a classic touch and worked well. Nothing off putting about it at all. The crab cake was massive and came out on a hot plate. Fork tender, buttery, flaky, with a subtle sweetness. Heavy on crab, very light on filler, exactly how it should be. For mains, we ordered the veal Alyssa and the signature New York strip. The veal Alyssa is huge, easily enough for two people. They were not shy with the crab meat, the pasta was perfectly cooked, and the bolognese had big, hearty chunks of meat. The veal itself was thinly sliced, tender, not gamey at all, with a crispy exterior and solid flavor in the breading. The New York strip was cooked a perfect medium rare with a nice peppered crust. Flavor was spot on. Tender, not overly fatty like you might expect from a ribeye, and a good portion, roughly 12 ounces or so. Straightforward, well executed steak. Dessert was the crème brûlée and New York cheesecake. The crème brûlée was not traditional. No hard cracked caramelized sugar shell. More of an eggy custard than a classic brûlée, but still very good and not overly sweet. The New York cheesecake was thick, creamy, and classic. Served with strawberries and cream, though you can also get it plain or with blueberry or caramel. Overall, it was a really good experience. On a busy Saturday night, the place had a full on vibe. It felt like something out of Goodfellas or The Sopranos. Old school, lively, and confident in what it is. There's something special about Mr. John's, and it absolutely delivered for a celebration. read more

The turtle soup was bursting with flavor and my steak was the best I've had this year! I'll be back. read more

Mr. John's is attached to the Wyndham Avenue Plaza on St. Charles. This steakhouse has been open since 2006 and many locals refer to it as one of the best in town. My wife and I swung by for dinner while in town recently and had a mixed bag of a meal. The interior is American Steakhouse meets New Orleans. There's rich wood paneling, that familiar tile floor, bent wood chairs, bustling tight dining areas with waiters running about holding plates piled high, and framed pictures of local/national celebrities grinning over plates of steak collecting dust on the walls. It's intimate if you're a two top, but would equally feel comfortable if you were a loud boisterous big table of friends. Although it's a steakhouse, I noticed many guests dining in shorts or other versions of casual dress, so don't sweat the details if it's too hot outside for a jacket. The service is everything you've come to expect from New Orleans fine dining waiters. They were cracking jokes and having fun, but all business when it came to questions, orders, bringing food out fast, and making sure we had everything we needed. Zero complaints on that front. The food though left us disappointed. Either this place used to be fantastic and has just let their standards backslide over time, or maybe it was just an off night, but neither of us were impressed by the quality of just about everything that came out. Was it edible? Yes. I'm not saying the food was terrible avoid at all costs, etc. It just wasn't executed well, especially for the price point. They bring out a gratis meatball when you first sit down, and not that I paid for it, but the little meat treat was falling apart at the touch of my fork, and the red sauce it came in was thin and under seasoned. I ordered the Veal Alyssa, a breaded cut of veal with crabmeat and lemon butter sauce, sitting atop a linguini Bolognese. The breading was over fried and chewy. The sauce was again thin and under seasoned, but the linguini Bolognese itself had a nice bite. We both ordered the turtle soup and it was just plain off. My wife had similar feedback on her entree. Just meh. New Orleans is filled with exceptional fine dining options. Admittedly, steakhouses take a backseat to French Creole fare which is usually the main event, but there's still plenty of options to choose from. I'm not ready to completely write the place off based on one evening and hope my eventual next visit is an improvement. read more

Came here to celebrate my 41st birthday and Father's Day, and somehow Mr. John's managed to turn what should have been a special evening into a masterclass in disappointment. First, we waited nearly 15 minutes just to get menus. Our waiter seemed to be playing an elaborate game of hide-and-seek because he was nowhere to be found most of the night. We started with the calamari and fried green tomatoes, which tasted like they had been fried in oil that should have retired several shifts ago. Everything had that stale, greasy flavor that lingers long after the meal is over--and not in a good way. Then came the cocktails. The Old Fashioned and Espresso Martini were both terrible. The Old Fashioned was served with chipped ice and was advertised as being made with Pinhook bourbon. One sip in, it was pretty clear that wasn't what we were drinking. If you're going to charge premium cocktail prices, at least serve what's listed on the menu. The Espresso Martini somehow managed to be both bitter and watery at the same time, which is honestly impressive. The biggest disappointment? This place talks a big game about being a high-end steakhouse, but the attention to detail was completely missing. Slow service, mediocre food, bad drinks, and a birthday dinner that felt more like a test of patience than a celebration. The highlight of the evening was leaving. Save your money, save your special occasions, and save yourself the frustration. New Orleans has way too many amazing restaurants to waste a meal here. read more

Previously been here about 10 years ago and the food was amazing. Well needless to say, our visit this weekend was a very disappointing. My martini was pretty good but hubby said his old fashioned was not good at all. Now onto our meal, ordered the soft shell crab appetizer special with a seafood gumbo and turtle soup. Entrees were regular filet mignon, petit filet mignon and a side of creamed spinach. Let me start at the beginning, our soup and gumbo came out in a reasonable time. The gumbo was decent but the turtle soup was very disappointing. At one point the busboy came up to the table and asked if I wanted my martini refreshed and I said no. Mind you, I still had a third of my drink left, along with an olive. Next thing I know, he scooped up my drink and immediately walked away. When the waiter came up and asked how everything was I proceeded to tell him what happened and at that moment the busboy walked up and heard what I was saying and he did apologize and replaced my drink with a new drink. I then went on to ask the waiter about the soft shell crab appetizer that we had yet to receive. Now I had already taken 2 bites of the filet and was very disappointed as it was bland. My husband said his steak was seasoned well. The waiter admitted he forgot to put in the order for the appetizer and then abruptly walked away. When he returned, I proceeded to tell him I was not pleased with the steak and would really prefer the soft shell crab appetizer and that I was not going to eat the steak nor pay for it. I then received the appetizer as my meal and it was mediocre and drowning in sauce. At this level and prices of restaurant, everyone should have high expectations. Unfortunately, this time, Mr. John's Steakhouse didn't meet our expectations. read more

We came with a large party (maybe 9 people) and the waitstaff was attentive without becoming intrusive. I shared the boneless ribeye with my neighbor and it was probably the best steak I've had in years. Grilled to perfection! All of the sides were delish (Creamed Spinach, Mushrooms, Asparagus, Loaded Potato...) It's an Old Skool steakhouse, old guys with white aprons. Man..... that service was impeccable and that crab cake, shoot!, Amazing! At the end of the day, I will be back.

We frequent NOLA about 4 times a year and after several recommendations to check out Mr. John's Steakhouse we finally stopped in. Making reservations was easy, after a quick Uber ride we were checking in. It appeared that despite being on time our table was not ready. We were directed to the small bar area that was filled with people. We spent a while trying to order a drink, but with all of the bodies it wasn't idea to be standing while holding a drink. I was a little annoyed since we were dressed up, in heels and holding out bags, coats and now our drinks. Once we finally made it to our table we started with the complimentary meatball, which was super yummy. Honestly, I would have ordered a plate of them but I didn't see them on the menu. We opted to start with the Onion Rings and boy were we happy! A large order that was perfect for sharing with 3-4 people. The red onions were something we hadn't had in an onion ring but offer a little sweetness which we loved. Dinner is where things went a little down hill. My biggest pet peeve at a restaurant is when your meal comes with sauces/ additions that are not mentioned on the menu. I went with the Braised Pork Belly- which menu says is: "Seared crispy and served atop garlic mashed potatoes with a roasted shallot jus". Instead I got the pork belly covered in a sauce which was kind of spicy and sweet potato mash. I didn't eat more than a bite of two. At a normal restaurant I feel like staff notice and inquire- not here. Even when I didn't want it boxed up no questions asked. For the price you pay here I was disappointed. The mac and cheese was good, the filet mignon and petite filet were also very very good. Steak wise- this is a great choice (it is a steak house after all). Dessert was very similar to the main in a sense that a lot came on mine that I didn't know was coming. It could have been the lack of explanation from staff or just not adding items to the menu, either way it left me feeling meh. Would we return? I don't see it in our future. There are a lot of food options in NOLA and a for a $300+ dinner and drinks I'm not sure it was worth it. read more

A reliable dining experience, with variations in sound levels, server attentiveness, and quality. Avoid rush hour and do not allow them to seat you on the left side of the restaurant; loud and bustling.... A couple days ago everything was spot on; today, the steaks came out a little too rare for our tastes. They remedied it quickly so no harm, no foul. If they had better bread, it would definitely rate a 4.5! We enjoyed our experience and will return on our next visit to the Big Easy. read more

Easily the best sirloin steak in the city! The vast wine list was impressive as well. This is where you come to get a steak in New Orleans.

We tried Mr John's twice. The first night was after a long flight and we thought the service was terrific, the food great and dessert (cheesecake) out of this world. Later visit that week, was less pleasing. Cocktails were served With way too much ice, filet was overcooked for a rare request but salad and baked potato was very good. We were disappointed and did not return. read more

Mr. John's Steakhouse is my favorite steakhouse in the city. I keep drifting away to try other steakhouses in the city, but I always return like a boomerang. The atmosphere, service, and food are impeccable! Their appetizers are always tasty and I love the complimentary meatball they bring out. Their steaks are always well seasoned and cooked to perfection. As much as I want to finish each bite; I always end up with delicious leftovers I happily devour at lunch the next day. The way the servers brought out food was theatrical. They do not casually walk to your table with your food, they will walk and cross around your table to place the food at same time. It's like putting on a show, I could not wrap my head around it when I noticed it the first time. It was a nice touch to dinner. Overall, this is where I would take my most important people in my life for a special dinner for a perfect evening. Don't miss out on Mr. John's! read more

First off, my experience here was so poor that I finally downloaded yelp to make this review specifically. On October 25th, 2025, I made the mistake of choosing this steakhouse to celebrate my bachelor party while I was in New Orleans for the weekend. They started off our dinner with an in-house, complimentary meatball. Everything was fine until someone from our party almost choked on a piece of plastic in his meatball. We immediately notified our waiter who then said, "I'm sorry about that, I will speak to the kitchen for you." After about 10 minutes, we heard nothing back from our server as we watched them go to every table near us and continue service. I had to flag them down to find out what the kitchen said. Which they then replied, "Well the kitchen doesn't know what happened and I already said sorry." Then the waiter started to say the plastic could've came off the bread basket and there's no way to verify it came from the meatball because they didn't see it. Basically, insinuating we were lying. After, this horrible response from the waiter, I asked for the manager. The manager came over to us and expressed that he was sorry. This is when I explained to the manager that we were celebrating my future marriage and I chose this specific restaurant because it was recommended to me by a family member. The manager responded by saying that he appreciated us for celebrating here and he was going to talk to the kitchen. That was the last time we heard from or even saw the manager. I trusted the manager would come back eventually or maybe we would have some sort of accommodation but that was it. The check came with nothing taken off which I wasn't expecting until I realized we never heard from manager again. I didn't need them to make our meal free or anything like that but I was optimistic that they would do something nice for our troubles instead of acting concerned in our face then never checking back with us. I mean, literal plastic was in someone's food and nothing was done about. This place with never get my business again and I would recommend this to anyone I know or care about in the slightest. Also, the food wasn't that good, I've had much better steak from many other places for the same price. All in all, the service was absolutely horrible and the manager should probably go through more hospitality training or consider a new career that doesn't involve interacting with people consistently. read more

My wife and I came here a few weeks ago for our anniversary and they did not disappoint. I made a reservation with OpenTable and made a notation that we were celebrating our anniversary. Service was excellent, from the valet to the servers. And, frankly, for the price we paid, it should have been. We were waited on hand and foot. We wanted for nothing. Our glasses were never empty. The restaurant was clean, but had that old school, mafia vibe. Like a scene from Godfather--dark, photos on the wall, tiled floor, dark wood. It did not have the hip ambiance of Desi Vega's. No, this was the place for folks like Archie Manning, who was seated near the front windows of the restaurant. It reminded me of an old Dickey Brennan's, like in need of a reno. Well, the food was delicious. I wasn't crazy about my seafood soup that only had one oyster and one shrimp in it and I wasn't crazy about our $31 lobster tail. That was so overpriced and didn't have much flavor. The highlight dishes were everything else--who dat shrimp (wrapped in bacon and dressed with this delectable sauce); we get this dish whenever we visit Desi's; crab cake, and, yes, it was sizzling and mostly crab; ribeye, so tender, moist, and flavorful, despite being well done; and a side of lyonnaise potatoes. I've heard these called brabant potatoes in other restaurants. Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. They surprised us with a complimentary ooey-gooey bread pudding dessert at the end. It was small, but we were watching our carb intake. Not sure how to describe the dessert, but it was a tasty treat. We can check this box as we make our steakhouse rounds. read more

I guess the management did not take the same hospitality course the awesome waiters did. Our group endured an unacceptable wait time to be seated. Drinks should have been offered to us while we waited 30 minutes for our reserved table to be vacated. No apology. Did not look good. Immediately opinions shifted once our cheerful waiter arrived and the bottles started to flow. Wonderful and incredibly inexpensive wine list. Varieties from all over the world including the pacific north west. Bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp and fried green tomatoes are a must have. The shrimp are meaty and savory. The tomatoes are loaded with a generous amount of crab meat. Everything is loaded with crab meat here. Might be a bit excessive. Steaks tasted like steak and not whatever you find in supermarkets these days. Cooked perfectly. Perfect color. Creamed spinach very good. Exactly what you expect it to be. read more
