I was experiencing a smoky smell around my fireplace which had originally been a wood burning fireplace, but had been changed to a gas insert by a previous owner. Dave not only cleaned my chimney, but also taught me about air pressure in my home and how it affects the fireplace, advised me on a product that I could apply to the stone surface that would remove the soot and smell, resurfaced the fire bricks in the bottom of fireplace, and re-caulked around the chimney on my roof. We had an issue with smoke not venting out the chimney. Dave asked for photos before even being hired to begin his diagnosis of the problem. When he arrived he went right to work trying to understand the problem, and our wood burning stove. After cleaning and adjusting he gave us instructions on how to build a proper fire. He followed up that evening to see how it was working. While it improved, it didn't fully fix the problem. What did he do? The next day, IN THE SNOW, he climbed up on our roof and inspected the cap. He found the problem. Fixed it. And now no smoke billowing into the house. We appreciated his attention to detail, thoughtfulness after the inspection and education to improve our living. I moved in my house back in 2004, and the house had a wood stove. This became the first time I ever used a stove for heat. Each year I would contact one of the chimney companies in the area to clean my vent pipe. This would cost me somewhere between $110 to $160 per year. The company would be at my house approximately 10 minutes and sweep out my pipe. A couple of years ago I purchased a new wood stove. I have never installed one myself. The company that I purchased it from is from out of state and they do not do installations. I contacted a couple of the companies that I used for cleaning, but they would not call me back. Finally I spoke with one of the companies, and they came over to my house to install it. They pulled all the parts out of the box and could not put it together. They recommended for me to bring the manual to their store so they could review it. After they did that they said they would get back to me. By the way, on that same day they dropped their broom down my existing vent pipe and charged me a cleaning fee. Which was the most expensive cleaning price I got. I came across Dave Doherty to attempt to find another person to help me out with my installation. I explained to Dave what I had and inquired if he could help me out. He explained to me during our conversation, I don't know what the big deal is with your situation and assured me he could install it without a problem. He not only set up my stove easily, he did not need the owners manual. My existing vent pipe did not match up with my new pipe. He had to trouble shoot matching up what I had with what I bought. It all worked out great in the end. He also took extra time to educate me about my stove and recommend the best ways to use it and take care of it. Needless to say, I have used many of the chimney companies in the area in the past. I would recommend none of them. I would highly recommend Dave Doherty. He will be the only person to work on my wood stove unit in the future if I ever need help with it again. I only wish I had someone like Dave to work on all the areas of my home when I run into a problem. I also found that Dave's prices were the best of any of the other chimney companies. I met David R Doherty 18 years ago ... when I had just moved into my 80 year old home in Dewitt. When he arrived at my door I was feeling very vulnerable. I'd had a chimney person out to inspect the chimney before I used it and this "professional" identified about $1000 worth of work I'd need to do if my family was to be safe. I thought, "I need a second opinion." Enter Dave. He came, he actually did a careful inspection (unlike the first guy) and he said, "It's old, but what it needs is regular cleaning not all that stuff he tried to sell you." Since then I've had an annual visit from Dave for a careful inspection and thorough cleaning, he's done a few minor repairs and improvements over the years, and I've enjoyed 18 years of wonderful, cozy, safe fires. I would not consider Dave ordinary compared to other contractors. Seems today many contractors are not responsive, that was not the case with Dave. Dave was prompt with his estimate, understood our needs, was fair with his pricing, and even made accomodations to push our job timeline up because our house was being on the market for sale. Our repair required significant demolition and the area including my roof and gutters were cleaner after Dave worked than before he arrived. He is a master at his craft, as evidenced by the material he provided prior to rebuilding our crown, which explained the exact steps he would take during his process. He completed the work just as he promised and even came in a little under budget. On top of being a great contractor Dave is a pleasure to talk with, he even took the time to toss a football with my boys the last day he was working, because as he said, he doesn't get to play ball with his girls.
